    Soldering Battery Connectors
    A Hobby King sponsored segment.
    More details here:
    flitetest.com/articles/solderi...
A lot of you have asked for this... so we took the time to show you how we do it. Learning to solder battery connectors is essential in the RC world. So many brands of batteries! So many connectors! Just pick a connector style, buy a bunch of them, and solder away.
    Tips:
    1. Only cut ONE WIRE at a time.
    2. Use flux to prep your surface.
    3. Slide on the heat shrink over the wire before you solder.
    4. Make sure both surfaces are hot enough to accept the solder.
    5. Don't get the connector lead too hot, or you'll melt the connector.
    6. ABSOLUTELY double check you polarity.
    Have fun and be careful.

    My super awesome tip:
Plug it into an opposite plug while soldering (male if you're soldering female and opposite).
That way the plugs stay in place and won't start moving around if the plastic gets soft.

Damage to the connectors can result from an underpowered iron so you have to heat the connector for too long. I use my 60W soldering station (digital temperature control so it adjusts power based on how thick the wires you solder are) and I've never had this issue. They're only $30 on eBay for a clone of a Hako.

    A) The intro sets a tone and a feel for who we are. I agree that for short segments we should use the shorter version.
    B) We can add this to the written version on our site. Thanks.

Guys I love your videos. One problem though. Although you are all handsome fellows, It would benefit your viewers more if less camera time were spent on you all talking while a demonstration is in progress and more shots of the demonstration. Some people learn by listening and some by watching. Just a thought. In my opinion you have the best RC Airplane learning site I have seen on the Net. keep up the good work.

SOLD ER ING -not a bad video as it shows you to TIN ( that is PROPERLY solder coat both the wire and the plug separately then you can just melt the 2 together quickly - no damage to the plastic and no need for you to hold solder at the same time .
    but -
(1 ) never use corrosive flux for electronics - get a flux pen- lots on eBay( it looks -like a sharpie pen ) wet the wire and the plug with flux pen first and then tin both separately . never carry solder to the work on a hot iron -that smoke is the flux from inside the solder burning away ! - hold the iron on the work and add the solder wire so the flux melts and runs onto the job before burning away as smoke .
( 2 ) always use the biggest soldering iron bit you can get onto the plug ( I use a USA weller 50 W temperature controlled iron) - that bit in the video is much smaller than the wire and heat is just going to go down the wire -that makes for a slow joint and too much time allows the plastic to melt and can give a bad joint .

Good info, nicely produced. I'd add that after tinning your solder cups, use scrap wire with some flux in it or Solder Wick to clean the cup of excess solder. Cup should be empty, with the walls just plated with solder. Put a bit of flux in the empty cup, slide the tinned wire in all the way, then add heat/solder, and viola! A proper solder joint with no voids or oxidized solder, and the 'lay' of the wire strands are not disturbed by trying to push cold solder out of the cup.

I always connect both ends of the connectors together before I solder on wires. Else you'll find the connection can be very hard to remove. Granted I'm using XT-90-S (Anti-Sparks with 10mm wire) that require a lot of heat. (So your results may vary) But even with Ultra deans I found this to be true. Also use a quality adjustable soldering gun, you'll be glad you spent that extra $30 or so for a decent one vs a low quality one. Real lead solder works better as well, lead-free solder eh. Try both and you'll find lead solder melts easier and gives a very solid connection. (Just be wary of the fumes!, use a fan..)

I am really having troubles with this. I suspect my solder is crap (led free where it should not be, or the opposite?), or maybe poor soldering iron or wrong temperature?
The solder does not flow the same way it does in the video - it melts and solidify very quickly and looks a different colour, like a very matt grey with rough surface, looking like broken low quality metal. I used my T100 solder iron at 350 degrees C with flux.
What Am I doing wrong? bad quality solder? (should I look for led free, or the opposite), or wrong temperature?

Hi, ... excellent job soldering, ..... Tell the guys out there that "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT", ... PRACTICE SOLDERING on old plugs & sockets, THAT will give you the experience & confidence in what you are soldering.
Also, ... you did NOT mention that wire gauges matter, ... you can NOT use thinner wire from the battery to the ESC when lengthening wires, you MUST use the same gauge wire or you could melt/burn your wires or aircraft setting them on fire.
USE THE SAME GAUGE WIRE ON ALL CONNECTIONS, ESPECIALLY BATTERY TO ESC WIRES .......... Soldering irons can be from 10watts right up to 100watt soldering guns. ..... small wires = small iron. ... thicker wires = a higher wattage iron, ... as I said earlier, ... PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

I'm not a fan of XT plugs the plastic melts when you solder it the at least on the 90's. I like EC3 and EC5 I like much better no heat shrink and no melting plastic to deal with. I use a lighter or heat gun to warm the plastic clicks right on with little force. The EC-5 is rated to 120 amps higher then the XT90.
