I am actually installing a mini split this year. The ac using works well (except if it’s over 95 out) but the issue is my electric heaters in the shop, $700 utility bill attributed to them this mo….. so I’m switching!

Great Tour! Just moved 1200 km and rebuilding my shop from scratch (which also happens to be in my attached 2 car garage) I saw tons of great ideas, and I love your use of noise dampening wherever possible… ingenious!! Looking forward to catching up on all your videos.. keep ‘em coming!!

Oh the great, love my cnc! Recently started to learn that a cnc and a laser engraver are a great pair that works together!
Noise dampening for the family is huge. I like the dust collection system/adaptability.

@@BitnerBuilt Make sure you get a Lathe that will allow you to adjust the speed with a knob and not changing the it by the belt. It will make things much easier!!! Good luck on your new adventure!!!

Lots of great ideas - awesome workshop. One thing to consider is upgrading to a dual port AC. I have 2 portable AC unites in my garage (Texas summer heat = 110 degrees). When I switched from a single port to a dual port, it made a big difference in the unit’s ability to cool my garage. You could google why dual is better than single. Good luck!
Thanks and very good idea, thank you! I think I have my eyes on trying to get one of the mini split companies to do a video with me 😉 especially because then I might not have to run a humidifier and dehumidifier in addition, would be much preferred!

FYI…you forgot the photo 17:18 of the honeycomb snake fashion outlet to reduce the sound that you mentioned you would show. Great Video either way bro.
Aww dang! Thanks for letting me know. If you google search for photos of a “sound proof baffle box” any image that looks like a “snake / maze” shape is what I did. It allows air to freely pass through into an out of the unit as air moves with pressure, however, sound moves with waves, and so in order for the sound to escape the cabinet through the maze it Hass to bounce off of all of the surfaces repeatedly. Since those services are covered with sound reducing foam, by the time, the sound wave gets to the other end, it’s diminished to almost nothing. Thanks for the shout out.

Great build! Just a quick note, at 3:07 you mention that you bring the miter saw down then pull it out towards you. Doing this would cause a climb cut and you have a much much higher chance of a kickback. It's much safer to push the blade back into the home position.
Your absolutely right Anthony! I really articulated that one badly. I should have said to score it first starting at the fence and pulling out to make the trough for the particles to follow then plunge and push the blade back to the fence. Thanks for the catch!
dust collection on wider cuts seems to work better with the pushing back cut
Also, a lot of the climb cut worries can almost disappear with negative rake/hook blades made for miter and radial arm saws. Cut well, but don't want to dig in and run away as much.
I love the channel. Do you have a video on the accessory cart build? That’s a great concept for tools that aren’t used all the time.

Nice Job. If you found that Craftsman Jointer in Scotch Plains, might have been mine at one time. But mine would have been a 1971 or'72 version. Yours looks newer....

"2 Car Garage" caught my eye, because that's exactly what I've got. You've managed to squeeze an amazing amount in while maintaining a usable space - nicely done! Thanks for sharing your ideas. I would welcome more details, especially on your organization and storage of smaller tools, as well as how you arranged your floor plan for working with longer lumber - infeed/outfeed, etc. For example, ripping a 14' 2x4 in an 22' garage can be kind of challenging when its -20F outside.
One question, do you have a spot to store sheet goods and 8' and longer dimension lumber?
Hey art! I’ll see about putting together a video on the smaller stuff. On the workable space my garage is 23.5ft wide so from the wall to my table saw I have 10ft and another 10ft8in from the outfeed side of that was to the other wall, so positioned exactly to be able to close sheet goods through. Since lumber that would be much longer would typically be done by miter saw I offset my miter saw to the right side of the garage so I have it with exactly 16 ft to the left of the miter and 7.5 to the right. In all honesty, I’ve never had to open my garage door to do any sort of cuts with this garage layout. If we’re talking about “ripping” a 14 foot piece of lumber, that would be done with my bandsaw which is on wheels, so I’m able to move that to cut diagonal with the outfield, going onto my big outfeed table. On storage i used to keep a lumber cart that was on wheels that I could put sheet goods on and a lot of my cut offs, but when I got the CNC machine, I had to make a decision to get rid of that for the CNC machine to live there. Tucked next to the CNC machine. I do have a vertical wood stack that goes 8 feet so I can vertically put a sheet over there and then in addition to my wall racks that hold lumber I have a space on my upper shelving area where I put long lumber that I’ve milled myself and has to dry out. I am plugged my garage door where the CNC machine is to prevent accidental opening because of that sheet goods stack.

Excellent job on the video! Just starting to build out my garage workshop. The first 17:55 project is power and lighting, then floors. My garage has finished walls and one outlet per side. Love to hear about the power design for your shop. # of circuits, amps, diy, etc.?
Thanks! Oh boy electrics been an issue, garage only has a 15(2 wall outlets) and 20amp(2 garage door opener outlets) breaker to start and the 15 also shared lighting with my foyer.. had to diy add 4 20amps for outlets and a double for a 220 for the new mini split I’m installing now. The 4 breakers are: cnc with shop vac, computer, fans. Second is for two infrared heaters that I am removing after mini split is installed. Third powers my laser engraver, 3x 3d printers 2 vent fans and lighting and the last is for my dust collector. Long term looking at two more doubles for 220 for a higher end dust collector and table saw so 10-12 breakers long term. (But I could remove two for the old dust collector and heaters if needed) I already have a sub panel on my system so it’s been a challenge (I have a Tesla charger and a heated pool, 2 sump pumps, bar with kegerator and wine fridge etc etc) I could go crazy with more 220 on top of that but I think the one for the table saw I would use as a communal in case I purchased other 220 tools like planer, jointer, drum etc and just swap plug them as needed.

Awesome set up! Customizing ana whites plans to better fit my miter saw and garage now. How deep is your miter station and about how much space between your fence and the front edge if you dont mind me asking?
The depth of the miter station is really 100% contingent on the miter saw that you’re going to be installing my sliding Hercules 12 inch required that I make the upper cabinet from the wall to the front of my fence 26 inches, then 9 1/2 inches from my fence to the edge. I have personally debated, ripping out the entire unit and re building it and installing a more compact miter like the Bosch for example, that way it would gain me more floor space in the shop, obviously big undertaking for that though!
I wish I had a nice dust collection, love woodwork, just not the dust.
Yea I am actually allergic to it! I am going to spend some $$ soon on a good collector just for more piece of mind!
How effective is using your dust collector for small tools vs using a shop vac or extractor?
So I do use both, I have a shop vac, mounted under my work table that I use for my overhead tablesaw collector, but I also use it for small tools sometimes, the dust collector once you start restricting its airflow down to a small pipe like that it’s going to be the same or even a little less effective suction wise, however, does collectors have much better filtration than a shop that does (typically) so you’re not spewing the super fine particles back into the air
Awesome shop, thanks for sharing! I have a question, you mentioned the A/C unit what do you heat with in the winter? I’m in Michigan and I’m in a 12x16 backyard Barn style wood shop fully insulated and finished. I was thinking of a mini-split, thoughts? Thank you for any input, new sub also!
Awesome thanks Philip! Well I have a horrible heat setup with 2 infrared electric heaters that are ceiling mounted and have thermostat outlets on them. They are able to keep the garage at 70 all winter but the electric bill do to them is easily 300 a mo. Now I could drop the temp when I’m not in there but I keep it 24/7 that way as I spend long hrs out there. Personally I know many people with mini splits and they do very very well.

what about storage for sheet material and lumber? or fall off parts after cutting?
I used to have a mobile sheet goods cart but that had to go when I made the cnc enclosure. Directly to the left of the CNC I have a short wood platform and I vertically store sheet good there.
What thickness. of plywood did you line your walls with for your french cleats
The sheets that are on the wall are half inch ply, and then the actual French cleats attached to it are three-quarter inch
I hope you are not offended if I give you some unsolicited advice. When using the miter saw is id not safe to cut in the manner you described. The blade is hard to control anjd is lible to skip out of control.First secure the work piece against the fence as much as possible
Next bring the saw blade carriage towards you and away from the machine without cutting . Now slowly lower the blade into the work piece and push the blade towards the machine cutting the board in half. It is easier to control the saw with this pushing motion, as well as it is firmly clamped and under load. Lo9ve your vids. (Just worried about your fingers)

Nice workshop! How many Square meters is this garage?
It’s 7.2x7.2 meters so around 52 square meters, the ceiling height is 3.35meters which makes it seem bigger. For the USA this is a typical 2 car garage size

Great video! What type of lights are you using to light up your shop?
Thanks! I have 4x 40w led double tube in the center of the room, two in the each garage bay. Along the walls and above the miter station I have a total of 13 of the 3 foot single tube LED lights from Home Depot that are $15 each. I have them all Daisy chain together to a motion detector outlet adapter I put on the ceiling, that way those lights turn on automatically when I walk into the room and turn off again five minutes after I leave. Are used to waste a lot of electricity just leaving these on all the time I only realized once I put a outlet meter on those lights that they cost about 50 bucks to run a month, if you leave them on 24 seven I thought since they were LED it was gonna be ultra low power so I was lazy about it, but no, it’s a lot of juice!
I've worked in the cabinet business for years and also my own 1,000ft ish commercial space I rented to build custom furniture. I have not done this work in well over a decade. Lost touch with hardware trends as well as tools. There was a time I knew what all the best of everything was. I've never even heard of hurcules saws, or how they rank. I know porter cable doesn't make heavy duty routers anymore. I wouldn't even know where to begin equipping a shop. Anyway NICE SHOP! I love what you did with the cnc enclosure. Also; a little saw dust in the shoes helps with sweaty feet. Smart!

Did you use any kind of software to do a draft floorplan for your garage setup? If so what did you use?
I LOVE floorplan software to map out EVERYTHING! Before we moved into our new house, I measured every piece of furniture so that I could drag it around on a floor plan to find out exactly where it was going to fit… Yes, I have issues😂 the one I use is ultra easy, for the iPad only called floorplans pro. Costs $14.99

How do you drain the edgestar unit?
It doesn’t produce that much maybe only need to empty 1a mo its reservoir. I actually switched to a mini spit a few months ago ago

But do you still park your car in there? If you don't, I'd be hard pressed to call it a "garage" wood shop as you're treating it like any other extra room in your home or basement. Otherwise, beautifully done!
We do park my wife’s in there whenever it’s snowing or bad storm but yea mostly my shop now
@BitnerBuilt Ha! Doesn't snow here in Florida, but we do get an occasional hurricane. Yes, you've got a garage workshop like me, as I try to get my wife's car in there every night. (Unless big project.)
Do you use the CNC machine to warrant the space it takes up? I've been eyeing a CNC, XTool S1, or a nice drum sander. Only have room for one. Thx
I definitely do use the CNC a lot. I use it a lot to augment whatever I’m doing, I do a lot of stuff where I will have it CNC out a very specific shape to add to some more traditional woodworking I’m doing. I really do love the CNC machine, I also just got an xTool s1 i’m gonna do a video on that a few days, the honest answer I have is that the laser engraver and the CNC machine are a perfect combo pair to use together. I take way more room with my CNC than I need to frankly, I could double stack the CNC and laser engraver without it being an issue. Laser engraver on top since you’re only placing the material.
I get turned off a lot of times by the narrator doing the Video. You however do a fantastic job in explaining why and what’s it for. Awesome job utilizing the space. Keep it up.

You are correct!
If you want a good advice. Sell that crappy A/C ! and buy one with two pipe going outside. Or install a Cheap 8000 BTU Windows unit. This thing is worthless. I mean its almost zero efficient because It's blowing your cooled air outside. If its already doing a good job you'd be AMAZE by a 14 000 windows unit.
Looking at a a mini split as soon as I can afford it
