  • Try this simple trick in cold weather to start your diesel car easier:
    1.Make sure all of your accessories are turned off(air conditioning, blowers, radio, lights, etc.)
    2.Turn the key to the RUN position and wait 5-10 seconds (30 seconds for very cold weather and weak battery)
    3.Return the key to the OFF position
    4.Repeat steps 2-3 a couple of times
    5.The last time wait a couple more seconds and then try to start the car
    The "science" behind this trick is that glow plugs only work for 5-10 seconds and by doing it multiple times you manage to pre-heat combustion chamber better. The last time you want to wait a bit more because while your glow plugs are working the voltage of your car battery is dropping and when the glow plug relay switch them off the voltage starts to rise again.
    Car used in the video is Peugeot 307 2.0 HDi 90HP

    I've often done the same thing for some years during winter. It does need the battery to be in good condition and properly charged as well.

    the logic behind this is to triple the heat time at glow plug. increasing the air temperature inside the engine cylinder

    An explanation is needed. What the turning ON and OFF, and again , again of the glow plug does is heat the air inside the chamber of the cylinder. If the heated air is really hot, the starter will have a ln easy time turning the engine. The glow plugs require a full charged battery.

    So glad I don't have a diesel. I did have one once - one of the 6.2 GM diesels, and it was a BITCH to start in cold weather. Took at least five minutes, and it had two batteries. PITA. I'm sure modern light truck diesels are vastly improved.

    • @justusthedeep
      @justusthedeep 5 месяцев назад

      I have the same 6.2 and it’s literally been the bane of my existence when the winter rolls in. I figured it must have been my starter, but after having it replaced, it looks like diesel engines just don’t like the winter.

      Sorry to hear. It may not work if you have bad starter, bad diesel fuel, bad fuel pump, bad glow plug relay, more than 2 bad glow plugs or too weak battery. That was the only way I could start my 95 ford escort 1.8td in the winter with an 8 year old battery

    Nah, don't need to switch on and off the key. The glow plugs work even when the light switches off, it stays on for 15 20 seconds...

    • @electronflow2716
      @electronflow2716  3 года назад +11

      It depends on the model. The 307 manual says they stay on for 5-10 seconds, but actually I have found out that in warmer days the glow plugs work for about 3-5 seconds, in really cold days they stay on for about 25 seconds before switching off. But with old weak battery I had to do multiple preheats no matter if it is 10°C or -20°C, just had to wait to hear the glow plug relay to click off.

      Make sure all your glow plugs are working. My car didn't want to start in cold and it turned out that only 2 glow plugs worked. Also another tip, if you drive a manual transmission car, hold the clutch down and then try to start it. That way you seperate the transmission from engine and it is easier for the starter to turn over the engine.
