  • After a full nut and bolt restoration taking 6,725 hours by world-class specialists Classic Motor Cars (CMC), the wraps came off this unique Pininfarina bodied 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2017 in California, USA.
The car was well received by the crowd of collectors and aficionados gathered at the event and finished second in class O-2 Postwar Closed.
This XK120 features unique bodywork by famed Italian coachbuilder and design house Pininfarina. It was first delivered to a Mr Max Hoffman in 1954, who was an Austrian-born, New York-based importer of luxury European automobiles into the United States during the 1950s.
He was a petrol-head who inspired the production and refinement of several vehicles from the main manufacturers, which earned him entry into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2003. It is believed that Hoffman inspired Pininfarina to reinterpret the shapes of the XK and then unveiled it at the 1955 Geneva Motor Show.
After the unveiling in Geneva, the XK appeared at the Autocar Show later in April that year and Australian magazine Modern Motor reported that it was due to be exhibited at the Turin Motor Show in 1956, but never arrived due to the owner wanting to take delivery of it.

The 120 FHC was a masterpiece of beautiful lines and minimal adornment. The Pininfarina reminds me of a middle aged woman trying too hard to look young.

Wonderful work and lovely to see it restored, but you know the original is something special when a Pininfarina "one off" isn't as pretty as a stock FHC.

This is the problem with Jaguars, it’s very difficult to improve on their looks. M.

Gosh... In a subtle way, that is quite breathtaking.
I want some of the pencils he used to draw that thing.
He must have used special pencils.

Beautiful job of restoration of a car that never should have been built. This is a classic example of taking a nearly perfect design and "improving" it so that it was unrecognizable and undesirable. It is no accident that only one was built.

So true, those upturned front bumpers just highlight the lower control arms even more.

undesirable ? different, but still very desirable . cost must have been a factor in there being only one

You need to bring this to Jay Leno's garage for a proper going over and review. I thought OMG who butchered an XK120? To my surprise it is gorgeous. No it's not the classic XK120, it is a completely different car and I like it.

Whether one likes it or not, this car certainly is distinctive (like a more athletic Bentley S2 Continental) and quite a few years ahead of its time.

Thanks one where Farina missed the mark by a country ,lie, not a patch on the original. Looks like a Lagonda of the day viewed in a hall of mirrors! The rear lights are excellently executed though.

What is the chassis number of the car? Where is the sound of the engine? Half the charm of an XK120SE is the sound of the engine. I have a 1954 Jaguar XK120SE. Although it was originally owned by Charles Hornburg, it has the standard Jaguar OTS body.

It’s not as zen as the original. It loses the organic curves and stops looking dramatic, fast and elegant. Too much ornamentation and no va va voom.

I very much admire CMC's work and their restoration skills and they've done a great job on this one. But, what was 'Pinin' Farina thinking of. In my opinion the design is in no way an improvement on the original. It's fairly hideous. All about opinions, of course, but give me the FHC any day.

As a one off it’s not unattractive BUT, as it wasn’t made by Jaguar Cars it isn’t a Jaguar. It’s a ‘special’ - albeit an expensive one

No, no, no, no. Play as much beautiful music as you wish but when a designer makes a serious mistake and creates something less beautiful than the original, you are in trouble. There must have been a lot of corporate toadies kissing the designer's hind end but nobody in authority to say it was bullshit.

Interesting that people don't like this car. I think it looks great, I don't know about better than the original but it looks great. Is that the tail you don't like?
