  • Tom Barry, a former General in the IRA, talking about the need of a British withdrawl from the occupied 6 counties to secure a lasting settlement.
    In the early 70's Barry discussed tactics with IRA men including Joe Cahill who said -
    "He wasnt an armchair general, he was a military genius. In the conflict he led by example. Throughout the decades, the goal of a united Ireland in his lifetime was his greatest wish. Not all that long before he died, I met him. He had one desire, he said. If he had the energy, he would love to get some men together and have another go at the British establishment, to see could he achieve his aim"

    My Grandfather James Hayes fought along side Tom Barry. He promised Tom Barry he would name a son after him. He named my dad Thomas Barry Hayes who was born in 1941 in Boston. My name is Thomas Barry Hayes Jr. born in 1968 and my son is Thomas Barry Hayes III born in 1998. I have photos of my dad as a child sitting on Tom Barry’s lap. Great history.

    I would love to see a movie about his life and have either Barry Keoghan or Cillian Murphy play the Tom Barry role. That would be a mighty story.

    Even though I'm a fan of Tom Barry I would have to disagree about the British Administration leaving and then having peace in Northern Ireland. The Unionists are to hardcore to let it happen.

    Fact 2018 most of the people in the north want to remain part of the UK and most of the people in the Republic no longer want the north. Ireland should never have been partitioned in the first place, but times have changed and preferences have changed for better or for worse.

    • @CathalOhAodha
      @CathalOhAodha Год назад

      Yep. The partitioning was not right, but the people who are settled in NI today are still there because they are content there. All the others have likely moved to the rest of Ireland. There's no need to bring any more politics and unrest there after all those people have been through.

    Totally agree with Mr Barry and I'm sure many will agree. He was after all a great leader and realist in his time. Sometimes in history, the older ideas are, in the final analysis the right ones!Colonialism was never a final solution or perhaps any solution, people find their equilibrium through practical solutions of living life. Oppressors have only 1 solution - enslave and dominate. Long live freedom, humanity and multiculturalism not political or racial correctness.

    NI will always be British unless a majority of its people wish otherwise. That position is upheld by the British government and will be defended by them by all means (including military means if that should prove to be sadly necessary)

    • @j.oneill5421
      @j.oneill5421 9 лет назад +5

      That is not true, the deal was that it was completely up to the Northern Ireland people what their future is and the republic will also have to have a vote as well but GB won't have any say on the matter at all, I doubt any would care either.
      The army can't do anything,who would they be fighting against anyway, the days of people joining republican and loyalist military groups are coming to an end, they will be a tiny minority in 100 years.

    • @barryscarfe2461
      @barryscarfe2461 9 лет назад +3

      agree that it is entirely up to the people of Northern Ireland as to who governs them. If a majority so wish then they will join the Republic of Ireland or they may wish to be an independent state on their own though that doesn't seem to be all that praticable. Of course, they may wish to remain an integral part of the United Kingdom and the British and Irish governments are committed to respect that.

      +Barry Scarfe IRELAND IS IRISH. PART OF IT MAY BE OCCUPIED BY FOREIGNERS (THE BRITS), THIS IS TRUE, BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT BRITISH. THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND SPOKE IN THE 20'S, THERE WAS AN OVERWHELMING POLITICAL MANDATE FOR FREEDOM THEN WHICH WAS TOTALY IGNORED. THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND AS A WHOLE MUST HAVE THE SAY ON OUR FUTURE WHICH EACH PERSONS SAY CARRYING EQUAL WEIGHT. YES, EVEN THOSE WHO REGARD THEMSELVES AS BRITS WHO WERE BORN HERE OR OTHERWISE QUALIFY TO VOTE WILL HAVE A SAY. You cant say much fairer than that. I'm talking about the inheritors of stolen lands, the descendants of planted people who drove the native south and west to eventually create an artificial population in the northeast of Ireland. UNDER THE TERMS OF THE GOOD FRIDAY ''SELLOUT'' THE PEOPLE FROM THOSE COUNTIES UNFAIRLY, IN MY OPINION HAVE THE FINAL SAY ON THE FUTURE OF THE ENTIRE COUNTRY ON WHETHER WE REMAIN DIVIDED AND PARTLY OCCUPIED OR WHETHER WE GOVERN OURSELVES COMPLETLEY. And this is the case REGARDLESS of what the outcome of the referendum in the rest of the country might be. As I understand it even a 100% result for reunification carries no weight if the majority of people in the occupied counties don't do the right thing and seize the opportunity for reunification and freedom. That to me is flaud and bollox really. In the case of a 100% result outside of the occupied counties (with the proportionate turnout on the day at voting centres being the same either side of the border) given that the population south of the border is more twice that of the north, then I believe that to be once again a clearcut overwhelming victory for an end to british rule in Ireland regardless of the vote north of the border

      +Criostoir O'hEidirsceoil The GFA says if there is majority in NI to join the Republic and one in a referendum in the ROI that also produces a majority vote then there will be a united Ireland. That is the only way of doing it as it isn't just about removing a border but a uniting of hearts and minds as well. Failing that, you could always rejoin the UK! You're be welcome and you would have devolved self-government like what the British government originally did eventually put on the statute book in 1914 before we were interupted by WW1 and another event in 1916. The only things you would be missing would be a defence minister, a foreign minister and an economy one. Mind you, your economy one doesn't have much to do nowdays as you share a currency (the Euro) with virtually all the EU (so the minister can't change your interest rates) instead of having what you should have the Punt.

    I'm reading his book, I've survived the Troubles I don't know how, reading how he justifies his actions is just the same as the modern SF and IRA, and he often writes about how they spared women unless they got in his way like one woman who informed, again like today with SF claiming the innocent victims couldn't be avoided by the IRA, it's full of bitterness and anger, I know how the Irish were treated by the British but I also know how the Irish were treated by the Irish , that doesn't justify crimes, on either side. The hate with which he talks of how he executed, murdered so called spies isn't anything glorious or noble

    We will never have peace in Ireland because of the British empire and bigots like the OO.
    A 97 year old woman (Mary ward) was buried last week, her son (Peter ward 18 years old) was the second person killed in the troubles. He was shot dead by "gusty spence" on the shankill road in 1966 outside a pub for no other reason than he was Irish. May he and his mother rest in peace.
