Connie Francis is an ABSOLUTE GEM!!! She has lots of music from the late 50s & early 60s. Some other songs to consider are "Where the Boys Are", "I'm Sorry", "Lipstick on Your Collar", and many more. The first two show her power and range while singing "love" songs. "Lipstick..." is a lot like this in its playfulness. All my best...

@@ezwriter5589 I am so looking forward to seeing Jay and Amber react to Brenda Lee again. Having hit my teens in '59, I remember Connie Francis and Brenda Lee being 2 of the most favored and famous female singers of their era among us young girls. I say this because they were 2 of the first young female icons for young girls. When they became popular in the mid 50's, popular girl singers were rare. When most of the famous 60's music artists appeared on the scene, Brenda and Connie had been performing for years and had already hit the big time as teens in the mid 50's. They both actually started performing professionally at about 5 or 6 years of age.

After Connie's first hit, 'Who's Sorry Now', she received many offers for more ballads. But, then young songwriter's Neil Sedaka and Hugh Greenfield came to her home and played many of their new compositions. After listening for a while, Connie said, "Your music is great guys, but the kids of today won't dig it. It's written for older people. Then, they last played her this song, and Connie woke up and said, 'Guys, you have my next hit!' And, it was a hit! Once, she was established a singer, Connie was able to sing the more grown-up songs. Then, when a song was a hit in English, she would record the same song in 12 different languages. Not every hit, but many of them! To hear her full high-fidelity abilities, listen to the soundtrack of one of her movies, 'Follow The Boys'.

Connie was America's sweetheart. She also had an amazing singing voice. Early in her career, Connie was planning to leave the business and accept a scholarship to college. She was considering a career in medicine. Her dad convinced her to record one old classic song (a favorite of his called Who's Sorry Now). The song was introduced on American Bandstand and over the next 6 months sold over a million records. There are a ton of hits from Connie like: Everybody's somebody's fool, where the boys are, lipstick on your collar, who's sorry now and so many more. Connie also made some movies. Connie is still alive (as near as I can find) and is around 85 now. She was doing live appearances (performing) as recently as 2010 I believe. Connie has had some health issues in recent years as well. Sadly, Connie missed several years of performing after a nightmarish incident back in (I think) 1984. She had finished a concert and went back to her hotel. A man broke into her room and robbed and brutally raped her. Connie's lawsuit against the hotel is the reason hotel rooms are safer today. Things like deadbolts and peepholes etc. happened because of that incident. She stopped performing live for several years. Happily (for Connie and all of us) she began doing appearances and singing live again. Brilliant entertainer. Strong brave woman. An absolute treasure. Worth a deeper dive y'all. Love ya Connie! Love to the Rob Squad too. Stay safe and well guys!

Her tragedies started with the brutal rape (3 hours in a hotel room) in 1974 where she nearly died, and her next big tragedy was in 1981 when her brother was killed by a hit man from the mafia. Then some years later she was diagnosed with manic depression and attempted suicide. Connie Francis had to many bad things happening to her in her life.
My mother had some of her records sung in German and Yiddish. Connie Francis was a very big star here in Germany in 1950s/1960's. I do remember some of her movies and her songs in the films. The 1960's was my childhood and browsing through the internet gives me very fond memories.

Connie is another one of the great young lady singers of the late 50's - early 60's. Some of her hits were "Who's Sorry Now", "My Happiness", "Among My Souvenirs", "Lipstick on Your Collar", "Where The Boys Are" & "Frankie". She recorded many of her songs in other languages. And she did the singing voice for some actresses in a few movies. She had a very tragic life (was raped, lost her voice for a few years with complications from surgery, her brother was murdered, suffered from manic depression, married 4 times).

An interesting side note to her song, "Frankie", It was supposed to be about Frankie Avalon, a heartthrob at the time. When she was recording it, before the first line, she leaned into the microphone and said, "Frankie, wherever you are, I love you." This wasn't in the lyrics and the engineer stopped the recording. He told her not to say it, but she refused. She ended up saying it again at the end of the song. It stayed in.

"Grease" was a late 70's movie about the 60's. Connie Francis starred in one of the first, and possibly the most famous, of all of the teen movies from the actual 60's. Her most famous movie, "Where The Boys Are" (about Spring Break in Ft Lauderdale), was from 1960 and it definitely represented the era. She was in a few movies, but basically focused on her music. She was in a relationship with Bobby Darin when they were in their teens, when they were already famous, and he wrote several songs for her. When he tried to get her to elope, her father ran him off with a gun. I don't think they ever really got over each other. She has some fantastic recordings and was one of the most famous female singers in the 50's and 60's, and continuing until retiring 4 or 5 years ago.

Idk, some of the references in Grease looked more like the 1950s, what with the poodle skirts and swing dancing. Maybe late 1950s but not the 1960s.

    • @avidrdr5640
      @avidrdr5640 2 года назад +3

@@maryannhayase1798 I was talking about the teen movies that were actually filmed in the 60's and "Where The Boys Are" was released in 1960, being literally the first of the decade. Grease was filmed in the late 70's. I'm guessing, from what I've heard about it, that it was set in the mid 50's, but I don't know because I never saw it. I was a younger than college age teen, living just south of Ft Lauderdale in 1960 when "Where The Boys Are" came out. I was too young to sneak up there with friends to crash the parties, but old enough to be very aware of how wild Spring break activities were and believe me, it wasn't poodle skirts and swing dancing. The movie revealed just a little of the real life Spring Break stunts that would be all over the local news.

Connie Francis was a major pop star in the '50s. Teenagers and little girls (including my mother) absolutely loved her. This was pop music before the Beatles came along and moved everything toward a more powerful, complex "rock" sound. And yes, Connie Francis can definitely sing. "Lipstick on Your Collar" and "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" are other cute, peppy songs of hers. "Who's Sorry Now" and "My Yiddishe Mama" really showcase her voice.

Yes it was a 'cutesy' kind of song but spot on recognizing what a top shelf singer she was/is She had a number of massive hits back then. One of them was credited for turning Ft. Lauderdale into the Spring Break mecca we know today: 'Where the Boys Are'. It became a very iconic song and shows off her vocal ability.

This was the first rock and roll million seller by a female singer. Connie had many firsts. She is a legend. The song does not show off her great voice. Her live versions of Born Free, Impossible Dream, and Love Is a Splendored Thing are unmatched and no autotune, too.

1937-1955: Early life and first appearances
Francis was born to an Italian-American family in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey, the first child of George and Ida (née Ferrari-di Vito) Franconero, spending her first years in the Crown Heights, Brooklyn area (Utica Avenue/St. Marks Avenue) before the family moved to New Jersey.[3]
Growing up in an Italian-Jewish neighborhood, Francis became fluent in Yiddish, which led her later to record songs in Yiddish and Hebrew.[3][4]
In her autobiography Who's Sorry Now? published in 1984, Francis recalls that she was encouraged by her father to appear regularly at talent contests, pageants, and other neighborhood festivities from the age of four as a singer and accordion player.

About time! Lol. I’ve been pleading for Connie for months. I don’t even think this emphasises her voice as much as other songs, especially “where the boys are”. She is my favorite female voice, and this is coming from someone born in the 80s. I like to say that “her voice completely saturates your ear holes”. Thanks so much for finally reacting to her. God bless!
