He's talking about crime--someone getting a hit and then dumped in the river with concrete shoes. The song is originally from a German play Three Penny Opera, I think from the 30s. If you like crooners, he's a magnificent performer.
He did a good job for first listen. It’s a lot to process the lyrics and story along w the great music and singing !
The best!!!
One of the greatest performers (ohhh there were sooooo many) of the 60s, he could most definetly entertain an audience, what a voice!
Wow!! You gave me Elvis and Bobby Darin in the same day! This lady is in heaven, lol.I was 4 years old when this song came out and my uncle used to sing it all the time (and he did a great job too) . When I heard it on the radio for the first time I was one really angry little girl because I thought he had stolen my uncles song!! The whole family got a real good laugh over that and I got lots of hugs from my Uncle Dan!! Keep up the great reactions!!
The song is a 1950's remake of a 1928 song from The 3 Penny Opera which was about a British killer named MacHeath. His is a great jazz version.
It's about hitmen and mafia lifestyle. The old kind of rat pack stuff. Bobby Darin is very talented. Great reaction and great questions. Keep going on this incredible journey. It can only get better. 🇨🇦👍😁💖
the song is from a German Opera called The Three Penny Opera, not really m4fia, mind you.
One of my favorite Darin songs. Nobody could pull it off like him! His other songs "Clementine" and "Artificial Flowers" are equally entertaining, but also about death.
Hey Shon, you have a good ear, this is a "murder ballad" which is a traditional style of songs that sang about death, crime, and gruesome murders. Prior to the 60's "murder ballads" were sang in an upbeat tempo but the lyrics were very dark. This song has been covered by many of the greats like Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. But Bobby Darin's version has always been a very big hit "Mack the Knife"; or "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer actually originated in Germany, it was composed and written in 1928. The song was created as a fill-in for an 18-century play/opera called "Mack the Knife" which told the story of a "fictional" murderer called Mackie Messer which was based on the character "Macheth" from the 18-century play "The Beggar's Opera" this song is the opening song of the first act recounting the crimes of Macheth and comparing him to a shark, the song lists his sinister crimes, including murder, the robbery and disappearance of a wealthy man, arson which killed seven children, stabbing a woman, and the rape of a young widow. So old Mack the knife wasn't exactly a nice fellow. lol 😆 But Bobby does an amazing job telling the story with so much swag and with his incredibly powerful crooner style vocals. I hope this helps, I'm glad you liked Bobby Darin he has some really great songs. Unfortunately we lost him way to young. But he left us some beautiful songs and for that we will be forever thankful. I really enjoyed your reaction thanks so much🎶👍
Try "if I were a carpenter" and "Happy". Darin had many hits. Kinda lost it when Bobby Kennwdy was killed.
@@doloresschultz8393 true, and very good choices
I love Bobby Darin's version of Mack the Knife. However, I heard this song was by Ella Fitzgerald. Each in the ovn way are great.
Wow. Thank you for such thorough information.
I love it when people realize that this song is about a murderer.
That would be me😂😂
Yeah! I used to listen to this song w/o realizing this was murder.
I knew the German version of this song. It originally is a Moritat (= street ballad). The "Threepenny Opera" ("Dreigroschenoper") from Bertolt Brecht is a very popular stage play in German Theaters. It's required reading for every student here.
Oh you are in for a treat! Bobby Darin is SMOOTH! This is one of my dad's favorite songs of all time and he's gonna be 89 this year! Another great song by him is called,Beyond the Sea🌊🎶🎙
Mack the Knife is a hitman talking about giving someone cement shoes to hold them down, this is about Mafia life! Great reaction!
Bobby Darin was such a naturally cool Crooner. Gone too soon, died on the operating table at 37. 🤢 RIP Bobby.
MacHeath is a character from the Three Penny Opera. This was produced in Germany in the 1930s by Kurt and Weill.
Love your reactions !! Sadly Bobby Darin passed away at 37 ! He was in line to be the next Frank Sinatra
Bobby Darin was amazing! He had such an amazing life, even though it was cut short due to his heart troubles that he had since he was a child. Bobby would have to get on an oxygen tank in between songs and the audience was none the wiser. He was comfortable singing rock n roll, big band, folk, and country and succeeded in those genres. Bobby also acted in films and even nominated for an Oscar.
thank you for Bobby Darin!!!!!! there is so much more to him.
I still haven’t seen one bad take ever from you Shon! How are you not at 1 million subscribers ! Keep rocking it Shon ! 🔥
Good observations. It's about a mafia hit man. He had the Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack kind of presence. He was very talented and charismatic. 🇨🇦👍💖
Bobby Darin genio musicale.perfezione,magia
The music and his voice and delivery are fantastic. Bobby was one of the best and left us much to esrly. You should listen to the song again with the lyrics displayed. The song will make more sense.
The song comes from The 3 Penny Opera and is about a killer who uses a knife to murder his victims.
Gloves so he doesn't leave finger prints of get his hands bloddy. Cement bag used to weight down bodies he throws in the water. The shark references how stalks his victims. He kills men to get their money to spend to get women to line up to go out with him so he can kill them. ( I think they are prostitutes, but not sure)
The song is deceiving because it's a catchy tune but the subject is murder.
Good description.
Hey Shon,
It’s FANTASTIC that you’re reacting to these older - AWESOME - songs and in a variety of music genres!
You could almost think of it on some level as early Gangsta / Thug Life, lol. Except this would have been more East Coast with the mafia.
But mostly, it's that big band thing that was so popular from the 1930s to the early 1950s. And you're right, real instruments horn sections everything. My parents and grandparents where do this when I was a little kid in the 60s and into the 70s, and at the time I didn't like it because I was into the music of the time, but later when I was playing and fans and also I played trumpet and jazz band and stuff like that and then later was playing and punk bands and rockabilly bands and all kinds of stuff, I suddenly realized how incredible this stuff was.
The most successful McDonalds ad is based on this singer, the ad is named "Mac Tonight." If you're still intrigued, "EmpLemon" here on RUclips, has a video titled, "Mac Tonight." Good watch. I think you'd enjoy it.
Mack the Knife is a serial killer. this is from the Play the Treepenney Opera (1928)composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht. the people mentioned are his victims. the way the song is done in the play gives a Parisian cafe atmosphere.
Check out more Bobby Darin, he also did beautiful ballads, try Dream Lover or Beyond the Sea.
The Opera's name is The Threepenny Opera. I read the text years ago. It's about people in the down and out part of London in earlier times.
Nice that you're listening to something that far back.😊
Mack was a gangster !
Excellent choice!!! I've always wondered about who Mac might have been and who the ladies were, I think it's time to find out. Here's another song you'll like: From 1958, "Stagger Lee" sung by Lloyd Price. This is an old song covered by Price, and covered many more times since. The 1958 recording is the best.
The Righteous Brothers brought me to your channel and they did "Stagger Lee" too, but check out the original mentioned above.
blues swing rock and roll came together in 1960 I was 11 and had a brand new transistor radio, I could take music anywhere. This song made me glide away
The medium IS the message ! We could take our transistor radios under the covers at bedtime ( mom would stick her head in my room and tell me to " TURN THAT THING OFF " ) and we learned we could pick up stations from HUNDREDS of miles away !!!
Having not looked it up, only from hearing it over the years, I think this song is about a man named Mack the Knife, his nickname. Some guy who has taken out people. In this song, Louis disappears after Mack had him take all his money out. The cement keeps the body at the bottom of the river. Then Mack is living in high style with all his new found cash... including any woman he wants, like Suki Tawdry and Lucy Brown... anyone really, because the line forms on the right, babes. Long line of women want to spend that cash with him.
I never knew what he was talking about either until I went through your comment section! Now I get it. Great song!
To go back just slightly further in this era, and look at a very famous black performer that came out of Harlem, you've got to check out Cab Calloway doing Minnie the Moocher. He also does one with this Duo of mind-blowing tap dancing dance dues, as part of a movie, and I've seen people react to that too but I never remember what the name of it is. It's in black and white and Cab Calloway kind of gets it going and the band is fantastic, and then the whole show is these two guys doing things that make your body hurt all over just to look at., laugh.
Great suggestions. Cab Calloway is worth a reaction and Minnie the Moocher is his signature song. The other song you are thinking about is "Jumpin' Jive" Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers.
Whoa....this is OLDER then old school
🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
It's about an assassin. 👌🤣
The song is from the musical The Threepenny Opera and Mack is the leading character. He is a gangster, a murderer and a huge ladies man!!!
Top Hit - Song sung all in Japanese that hit USA Billboard charts in 1963 - Kyu Sakamoto - Sukiyaki song
1950's Dean Martin - That's Amore -- Everybody Loves Somebody -- Return to Me -- Sway
Mack The Knife is originally a song from a German opera. The character is a notorious criminal (fictional). the song is originally in German but it was translated.
Bobby had swag. ❤❤❤
Bobby was nothing if not smooth. Cool dude! This was from a play called 3 Penny Opera. Mack the Knife (Mack Heath) was a murderer, like Jack the Ripper. He's naming all the people Mackie murdered
Mack the Knife is a gangster.
I'm German, but I never heard this song in my life. Didn't impress me much. Greetings from Texas.
At the time, everyone was saying that Jazz was dead. Bobby said: "NOPE!" And recorded Mack the Knife- and, because of him, Jazz was back. And, if you like this song, take a listen to Beyond the Sea- my all-time favorite Bobby Darin song.
Young folks hearing old stuff always makes me smile. We had a different mindset and culture back then. ;)
Now that you've watched Bobby Darin perform this, watch the lyric video. You were right! This song is about a killer or mob hitman. When the shark bites (the knife stab), scarlett billows (blood), wearing gloves, cement bag for weighing down a body, someone disappearing after pulling a lot of cash out of the bank. Mack the Knife is back in town!😉
His version of Up a Lazy River is Fantastic
You’re getting into good music now
The characters originate in the play, The Threepenny Opera (1928). If you like this one, try Lyle Lovett's version of Moritat, off the Quiz Show soundtrack. Same basic premise, same characters, but a much better version with different lyrics and orchestration. I'd highly recommend it - it made it into my Singles playlist as a 10/10.
Hey Shon, I thought I'd drop off another suggestion, in case you're interested. This is another great crooner "Frank Sinatra - Fly Me To The Moon 1965 (Live)"
Mack the Knife is an enforcer/hitman and that's his street name.
Hit man.
Hey Shon....... great job..... this is one of the coolest reactions to Mack the Knife I've seen! (maybe you coulda put on a shirt, lol) Yeah I don't know much about the Three Penny Opera from which this was derived but I think that's where the characters at the end came from......... but in this rendition it looks like a dude named Mack Heath stabbed this guy Louie Miller who had just taken all his cash out of the bank..... so Mack just threw the body in the ocean and let the sharks take care of business. At the end I think what's happening is all the ladies are lining up to be with Mack cause he's suddenly a big spender........ that's life(and death) I guess
One of the few records I bought in high school, loaned it to a boy and never got it back.
Those are all the women on line for him
Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it, ah, out of sight
You know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, oh, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there's never, never a trace of red
Now on the sidewalk, huh, huh, whoo sunny morning, un huh
Lies a body just oozin' life, eek
And someone's sneakin' 'round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?
There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river don'tcha know
Where a cement bag's just a-drooppin' on down
Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten, old Macky's back in town
Now did ya hear 'bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?
Now Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town
I said Jenny Diver, whoa, Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town
Look out, old Macky's back
Thank You.
Mack the Knife is a Hitman 😅
Bobby Darin was very versatile-he did early rock n roll-splish splash-he did country-If I Were a Carpenter-and as you just heard was a pretty good crooner too-had the moves, swag and voice..
You would have to know the plot of the Three Penny Opera to understand what the lyrics were referring to ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Threepenny_Opera
Bobby Darin is talkin about a serial killer listen to it again right from when he throws the cement on his feet and dumps them in the water Mack the Knife is a serial killer
I don't know who Lucy Brown was, but Lottie Lenya was a prostitute in 3 Penny Opera played by the composers wife. Her name was altered to Lalena by Donovan for a song in the 60s.
Great reaction! My dad named me after Bobby Darins song "Amy"
A mob hit, and Mack is the hitman
I suspect that "Mack the Knife" is the nickname for a fictitious Italian Mafia hitman. That song was released in that time period where the Italian Mafia was very active in places like Chicago, other eastern cities, and Las Vegas. I'm quite sure that it's not the nickname of a real mafia guy, because that would not have been a safe thing to do (to sing about a real mafia hitman).
Macheath was a killer which is what he is singing about.
Nothing subliminal. Listen again. It's all right there in the lyrics.
It was #1 for 9 weeks making it the biggest tune for 1959.
You should listen to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., better known as the Rat Pack.
Pedro Navaja - Ruben Blades.
Someone was snuffed, lies a body oozing life(dead)
Song about a serial killer!
Hes talking about the mafia.
This song goes waaaaaaaaaaaay back, to an English ballad, reinvigorated by the German "threepenny opera" all about Macheath.
Shon, man I'm late but you listen and it's about a killer, and them women in line wanting to help him spend his stolen money. You sharp! Most don't hear it!
The line forms in the right? Is that talking about all the potential victims?
❤️
It’s about crime, killing people, mostly I think he’s talking about the mafia killing people and not getting their hands dirty with the gloves they’re wearing.
😎🔥
listen to splish splash....from bobby darin...a whole other style....
Mack is a hit man?
Jack the ripper
I love this version, but Ella Fitzgerald does a mean version as well.
OG gangsta?
Check out Neil Sedaka.
Are you listening to the words ?
Sure sounds to me like the mafia was sending a message to someone. Just sayin.....
try "Mockingbird" with Carly Simon & James Taylor. Don't try to make sense out of the lyrics.
if you want the greatest live performance ever its " Unchained Melody" Bobby Hatfield singing on the Andy Williams TV show. and the unbelievable "Summertime" and for fun: "Bring it on home" with both Bill and Bobby.
Others will give you other song/singers.
Some great songs by Kris Kristofferson's "for the good times", " Please don't tell me how the story ends" (Kris with Rita Cooledge)
It's wise to stay away from Mack the Knife
Serial killer…
This version is an embarrassment. The original came from Threepenny Opera, which I consider the greatest musical of all time, which is dark and cynical. Bobby Darin drained all of the blood out of it.
Murder ballard
a hired killer.
