In those days, no electronic shit accompaniment. These were all live musicians, actually making a living accompanying, singers, movies, etc.

My Father was friends with Bobby D as well. And Frank, Dean Martin, his favorite, Sammy Davis Jr, and a great percussionist, (Linoln Hampton?) I think. My Dad played drums for many well known bands such as Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey, on a regular basis, and The great Glenn Miller orchestra for a few seasons, and Benny Goodman, and was also friends with Victor Borge, Sarah Vaughn, Etta James, and the great one himself, Satchemo a.k.a. Louie Armstrong. My Dad's history was exciting and full of travel, then I came along and he got off the road to continue his normal job of a barber. Flat tops & Burrs were the style of the times in the early 60's.
Sorry... got lost in my memories.
And yes, I was a late bloomer.

Beyond the Sea has a special place for me. Used to listen to it coming home off patrol on a submarine. Knew my wife was waiting. Meant more to us than the average person. ;-)
Beyond the Sea was the first Bobby Darin song I ever heard, ages ago. I was hooked after that! Still one of my favorites.

I don't know if *anyone* else can remember a macho "dare" activity that my older brothers did in the neighborhood. Maybe there's name of it I don't know it. Jack knifes out and had to keep feet apart. Then taking turns throwing them at the other guy's feet. It wasn't to HIT the foot but the closest went to the challenger. Yeah, probably were but I was just a kid. This was a "don't tell mom or I'll kill ya" activity. And yeah of course the kids circled around & that helped if some adult came close.
Maybe I'm wrong about describing the game but sure doesn't sound pleasant to get a jack knife in your ankle.
Martha Hanley Oh Yeah! “Numbly Peg”, we called it...extremely dangerous! In the early 60’s at a 2 week long Boy Scout Camp near Russian River, CA, a few of our Scouts from San Francisco Troop 15 would square off with this knife throwing game (we all carried Boy Scout Knives for whittling). The Scoutmaster ended one game by carrying a friend of mine away in his arms - the kid had a knife sticking out of his foot!! He was taken to a Hospital & didn’t return - he survived, but never returned to the Troop.
@@robertsmith1860 It is "Mumblety Peg", and there were several versions. Drop or throw a pocket knife as close to one's own foot and have it stick in the ground. Closet to the foot was the winner. Other, perhaps more daring, were that the knife was thrown as close as possible to the opposition's feet. Safest version was sticking a wooden peg or stake in the ground and using that as the target.

A gangster, but not the mafia. The song was written in German (1928) for a musical ("The Threepenny Opera") that was adapted from an English play written in the 1700s. He was a gangster in the 1928 version, but not part of the Italian or Italian-American mob.
The Threepenny Opera by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill. Two German communists who had to leave Germany in the 1930s. This has nothing to do with the real mafia. It's a very social critical opera.

"Mack the Knife" is one of those songs that you instantly love the first time you hear it -- instant ear worm!
The "crooners" were THE cool cats of their day. My father was a crooner in the 40s and 50s and met my mother in Hollywood. She was a dance instructor (tango, fox trot, mamba, samba, swing dancing, etc) and was in several movies in crowd dance scenes.
This The classic Fox Trot.....done it many times. *sigh with a smile*

I have won many a karaoke competition singing the version of Mack The Knife. Bobby Darin is one of my all-time favorite singers. He could see any type of style!

Someone may have already mentioned this, but just in case - Bobby Darin had serious health problems his whole life. He had rheumatic fever as a kid (multiple times), and it weakened his heart, which caused him to have difficulty breathing that eventually became so bad that he had to breathe from an oxygen tank offstage in between songs. He was only 37 when he died. 😭😭😭 Now, about his music: he started out as a light-hearted pop/rock-n-roll singer, with a big jukebox hit called “Splish Splash” in 1958, then moved into jazz songs like this one, and became more of a lounge singer, still very successful. But he started getting political in the 60s, and he worked on RFK’s presidential campaign (brother of President JFK, who had already been assassinated). Darin was present at RFK’s assassination (which occurred live on TV, btw), and it deeply affected him, as did other world-shaking events of the era. He changed his whole image and style, writing and performing folk songs, country, etc. His incredible song “Simple Song of Freedom” came from this later era. No there were many older fans who knew about ... anyway it was a panic for dad who died in 1970 at age 45. of a defective heart valve. His heart surgery was for an experimental artificial valve .. I can even remember the name Jarvic or Jarvik. He also caught rheumatic fever as a youngster. Grandma said that she had to carry dad around on a pillow because he cried in pain almost always when he was awake. The *joints* swell and ache you see.
And no antibiotic to treat. Before open heart surgery he was in Detroit Henry Ford hospital for two weeks prior. He never woke up.
Mom was left with six of us and VERY LITTLE insurance money. Dad worked in a factory but with his illness?? Getting a company to take you application and then the AMOUNT of the insurance after death. I know Bobby Darin's death from surgery was close to my dad's.
I knew about the rheumatic fever, but not about his need for oxygen after shows. My uncle (also was my godfather) had rheumatic fever in his early teens and had FOUR open heart surgeries beginning at age 39, eventually succumbing at 66 - 20 years earlier than the family tree "average". He always believed he was living on borrowed time - so was Darin. RIP to them both.

Bobby Darin was flat out Cool. I'm not saying it was an act, he really was a cool guy, and other movie stars and singers knew it. He was a good person as well. So talented.

I know Spacey wanted to do the role because he was such a Darin fan, which is very nice to know. I've not seen the movie but I hope Darin's son approves - since both Darin and Dee are now gone, no one else could aptly judge Spacey in the role.

It was written by Kurt Weill and is loosely based on Jack the Ripper. Of the women named in the last verse, Lotte Lenya was a real person. She was Kurt Weill's wife. Ella Fitzgerald made a famous live recording of it in Berlin where she forgot the words. Keep on exploring boys!

"Threepenny Opera" was based on a popular English play written in the 1700s called "The Beggar's Opera." The original character was called Macheath, a gentleman bandit like Robin Hood, and the play was a satire about the British government. Weill and lyricist Bertolt Brecht made the character more evil, to reflect the Weimar era in Germany, and he was a violent gangster rather than a serial killer like Jack the Ripper. They also renamed him "Mackie Messer," "messer" meaning "knife" in German.
And they were socialists.
Lotte Lenya wasn’t just Kurt Weill’s wife, she was an actor, best known in the English-speaking world for playing Rosa Klebb, the Russian agent with killer shoes in the James Bond film, From Russia with Love.

Bobby Darin was a great talent who died in his 30s due to a heart condition he had since birth. He knew his time was short, so he made the best of it.

Bobby was sick his whole life and I mean all kinds of illnesses that could weaken his heart. His heart was weak, but I don't know if it was from the history of his health or just was anyway, but if I remember correctly at one of his last performances he was going back after every song just to get oxygen to keep singing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he gave his life for his performances and although they had different circumstances, so did Judy Garland. My mom always told me that she was worked to death.

After my grandfather died, we went to a local bar. This song was on the jukebox. My cousin must have played it over 100 times to honor Grandpa and she loved the song.

He was a wonderful entertainer. Sing, dance, act, played multiple instruments, wrote and produced music, also arranged much of his music. Really and truly a one man powerhouse performer. May I also add, if you want to hear a little tribute to him, Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, listen to Frank Sinatra's version of Mack the Knife. he pays a tribute to each in his version of the song.
Bobby Darin was young when he passed. His final concert was fabulous, you should be able to find it on you tube. He was talented.
Bobby Darin was an amazing showman, too. He had recently acquired his own weekly, music/variety show at the time he died. We wouldn't miss it. What a performer! Amazing! And then the sudden news, "Bobby Darin Dead" WHAT? He was only 30-something! Couldn't believe it. Turned out his heart had been damaged by a childhood fever. He was having surgery to correct something and didn't make it. "Complications" they said.

My Dad bought me this album and a Tony Bennett album. They were my first albums and I still have them. He started me off right.
This one is a great classic. There are earlier recordings of this song and I believe the song is almost 100 years old. Bobby Darin’s interpretation is the greatest, Bobby Darin is also an under-rated performer that died young from health issues.

My dad's fav song...he got ill when I was 10 and passed when I was 18...when I married,I dedicated i"mack the knife" to him and the chandelier was swinging above me! Dad was around...the young kids now are into sharknado and sharks, and at my nephew's wedding his sister had a shark outfit on...crazy kids...
When I was in high school in the mid 80's, my dad picked me up from school one time and as we were driving down the road this song came on the radio. I started thinking to myself how I thought the song was probably from when my dad was in high school, and how he must be sitting there listening to it with fond memories. Then about half way through, my dad, who normally was very nice and even tempered, suddenly shuts off the radio and proclaims, "I always hated that song! A guy singing about his knife? So stupid!". 😂

Great lyrics and Bobby Darin was one of the "coolest cats" around! You think this song is an upbeat, cool, slick song, and then...you hear the lyrics: "never a trace of red" and "lies a body, just oozin life" and "someone's sneakin round the corner" and you then realize it's a mobster song: "where a cement bag, just droopin' on down - that cement is just there for weight dear" it starts to paint the picture of what's really going on, but Bobby Darin gave it such coolness - style and slickness! A + Miss songs like this! I really do appreciate these 2 young men who are expanding their music knowledge and educating others with it! Keep it goin' Lads, you're adding value to society!

Mack the Knife is a song from a modern German opera called "The Threepenny Opera." It's classic social commentary stuff. This is one very jazzy rendition of that operatic standard. Bobby Darin was mostly a crooner type from the 60s, but he gets real down with it in this one.
"The line starts, on the right babe, now that Mack, is back in town"...that's some old school cold blooded trash talk. Love it. This dude might be the origin of the word mackin but I don't know.
Great arrangement! The people or orchestrated this music were brilliant -- and note how the vocals and the instruments go together -- they don't fight each other.

"Sing Sing Sing" is probably my favorite big-band song; it was written by Louis Prima, who most younger people may remember from his "Jump, Jive 'n Wail" song that was used in a Gap commercial in the '90s and remade by Bryan Setzer.
