I remember hearing this on AM radio as a little kid. I’m 55 now. Been a long time since I’ve heard this
one of the great songs of all time.
“The Grand Ole Opry” is a Country music radio show that airs on Friday and Saturday nights on 650 WSM Nashville, Tennessee. The radio show has been continuously broadcast for almost a century. For a number of years, the radio show was broadcast nationally on NBC Radio. In 1927, when the program was first aired for the first time on NBC Radio, the first musical guest was African-American Blues harmonica player DeFord Bailey. Years later, in the late-1960s, Bailey returned to perform for their televised anniversary show. His performance is available for viewing here on RUclips.
The Grand Ole Opry is a long-running live country radio show originally aired from the Ryman Auditorium and now airs from Opryland. Most of the performers on the show are known as "Members" of the Opry and you can only become a member upon invitation of a current member. The Opry's membership acts as a kind of living Hall of Fame with both living legends and current artists regularly performing on the show.
Almost. They never broadcasted from the Opryland theme park, but instead build a huge freestanding building near the park. That location is still used by the Opry to this day, even 30 years after the park shuttered. The park was eventually leveled and they built a huge mall there called Opry Mills. Of course, the Opryland hotel is still near there and in use.
Both are worth a visit.
The Grand Ole Opry is known as the church of Country Music.
Opry members are required to perform on the broadcast an a regular basis. This is why George Strait isn't a member. He lives on his Texas ranch and has no desire to be in Nashville that often!
Love this ladies singing.
The Grand Ole Opry is a live radio show on WSM in Nashville Tennessee that began broadcasting in 1925. It had a very strong signal you could pick it up from several states over, thanks to NBC. Most of the country stars had a gospel/folk upbringing in the mountains and southern states and Bluegrass music came from there. It was the dream of Country/Western singers to get on the Grand Ole Opry to be heard, long before there were videos or television. It was hard to get on it if you didn't already have a record deal. And they had high standards and expected you to never miss an advertised performance. Which Hank Williams Sr missed performances and got fired. The Outlaw movement started when frustrated singers didn't fit into their mold, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and many others went to Austin Texas to perform on Austin City Limits which was broadcasts on PBS TV stations. A lot of folk singers got a boost from going to Austin.
Thank you for sharing. One of my favorites by skeeter davis. Her real name was Mary Penick. She was born and raised in Kentucky and lived on a farm. End Of The World came out in 1963
One of my favourite female country singer and this is one of her best songs. Please check out her songs "A dear John letter", "Gonna get along without you now" and "My last date".
Released in December 1962....a HUGE hit in early 1963...a. CLASSIC!
For female Friday you really need to do Jackie Deshannon "WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW" and "PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART"
Yyeeessss!!!
Im a regular hood dude doing food reviews on my RUclips channel lol
Jackie DeShannon's "Every Time You Walk in the Room" was also a big hit in the 60's!! Love her voice! Love y'all sooo much...keep up the wonderful work (fun!!)!!
Those are perfect for today. Perfect for then too. Maybe things don't really change much at all.
What he said.👍
You just had to love this song, she sang it beautifully!❤
This is what is called a "Torch song" - a song longing for unrequited love - THANK YOU
Isn’t it amazing how beautiful broken heart sound from the past
I love this song and the way she sings it. And thanks for the gem of your beautiful child coming into the picture at the end!
This was one of my mom's favorite singers and favorite songs. Mom used to sing in church and was told she sounded a lot like Skeeter Davis. I was only ten years old at the time so I had no idea who Skeeter was back then, I only knew my mom could sing well.
It is said that the person who wrote the song was inspired by the passing of her dad. Brenda Lee did a great version as well.
Skeeter Davis (December 30, 1931 / September 19, 2004).
Now onstage to rave reviews in Rock and Roll Heaven.
This song was so popular, covered by about everyone, including British Invasion bands. This is one of my niece's (born mid 80s) favorite songs.
Karen Carpenter also sang this song years later, beautiful song.
OMG, I was just listening to this song the other day. So, so good.
Thanks for showing us your little baby! Cutes alert so much! God Bless all y'all!
I’ve loved this song for years!
Finally my fav singer..Love Skeeter..
Got to #2 on the charts in March 1963...a CLASSIC!
Used to play her songs in school dorm!❤❤❤❤❤
That Rolling Stone list also got me feeling emotions, Jay!
She acquired the nickname of ‘Skeeter’ (a local term for a mosquito) from her grandfather because she was always active and buzzing around like the insect.
It’s gives me chills but the good chills it’s relaxing always loved 40-70’s music
Awwweee what a cute little man. So cute.
This song was used for the opening of The Karen Carpenter Story movie. A must watch movie if you can find it.
I'm not a sentimental guy, but this song always gets me, it's so beautifully sung.
Sir Jay and Lady Amber, Some singers just have/ had a passion for a song, Skeeter (born Mary Frances Penick 12/30/1931-9/199/2004) put her heart into this Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee song (1962). It was also sung by Brenda Lee, (1963) the Carpenters (1973) .
Please give a listen to Patty Loveless. You will never leave Harland alive. The live version
Always loved this song.
Fingers crossed for Allison Krauss “Forget about it”!!🤘🔥
I am very into Prog and Metal, but End of the World is imo one of the most beautiful songs ever written! It is difficult to not shed a tear while listening to it or even singing it.
Compliments to you two! I am very much into all kind of music, also actively. I got so hooked on your reactions for weeks (and I know nearly all the songs you covered but to see and hear you reacting on and discussing them opens up a whole new world to me), that I really got addicted and even for the first time in my life (probably not the last) I have to drop a comment on youtube. And Amber: I never met someone who gets the meaning of a song - even an instrumental (hey as a deep deep Flyodian since 40 years it took me years to find out the true meaning behind The Great Gig in the Sky!) - so quickly.
And btw - your reaction on prog and art bands like Supertramp, Pink Floyd, ELO, Styx, Yes... are showing that you really like this genre without even knowing much about it at the beginning. Please try some Marillion (Script for a Jester's Tear or White Russians with Fish, or Neverland or Berlin with h), Crusader , the Revolution Trilogy, or Spansish Train by Chris de Burgh (no, Lady in Red is NOT typical for him!), Uriah Heep (July Morning is a MUST, Gypsy, Pilgrim, Magician's Birthday, Tales...) - and especially dive deeper into the Pink Floyd catalogue with early psychedelic Barrett songs like Astronomy Domine, or the post Barrett songs like the Nile Song (that is Pink Floyd!?! :D), Saucerful of Secrets, and especially - please please, even if it is 25 minutes: ECHOES! Probably the greatest piece of music composed since the Beatles :)
And I think you didn't do any Tom Waits yet... he is a real rabbit hole you would love. And just for you: listen to Kate Bush's whole 9th Wave or A Sky of Honey suites!
Thanks and get the great job going on!
Cheers from Zurich, Switzerland
Love you guys❤️👍
Another great song from 1964 -We’ll sing in the Sunshine sung by
Gale Garnett beautiful song. Thank you😊
Omgosh so adorable...
PBS aired a great documentary about country music by Ken Burns. The Grand Ole Opry featured prominently. There was a country music program called "Hay Barn Dance" that aired on the radio following the "Music Appreciation Hour," which consisted mainly of opera selections. The host of the program joked that the opera was done and that going forward they would be airing a "Grand Ole Opry" instead as a way of poking fun at the show that led into his. Someone like the name enough that the radio station added another show to their lineup with it. As more and more people attended the show live, the studio became too small to accommodate them, they built a venue dedicated to the show.
In the mid '50s they aired it on television once a month for a year, and they had another live television special in 1978. It's been airing weekly on television since 1985. The show has launched and/or featured many prominent stars, like Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash.
I have an old cassette tape of my sister singing this song. She used to sing country music in talent contests and would win every week. She was supposed to start singing professionally at this one Country Club that Marty Robbins had sung at, but had a seizure. So that ruined her career real quick. She had seizures pretty often. She mostly sounded like Patsy Cline. I lost her a couple years ago to COPD. R.I.P. Charlene 😇.
Love the album " She Sings, They Play"! NRBQ, Her husband's band back her up!
I haven't heard this name in so long that I had forgotten about her. Wow
#2 in early 1963, it was always playing on the radio at that time (JFK's assassination would happen later that year). As a young kid, it obviously struck me as a sad song, but I was also struck by end of the world science-fiction (apocalyptic) movies of the time, which I attached this song to. Special and Great Memories. :)
1 of those misheard lyrics for me when I was 9-10 year old. We did not know the lyrics at all but when this song got played in the music class we'll all be shouting the chorus, "Volcano!! It's the the end of the world!!" 😄
My son used to play a game (new Vegas?) And the background music had this song and a bunch of old crooner songs you would love. I would catch myself singing them for days after. 💓
There's that adorable Luca 💙
I’ve been waiting for y’all to react to Skeeter, I love her. “Face of A Clown” is another of my faves, yes it’s also sad and somber, but she’s so good at that lol. Can you add Tammy Wynette’s “Apartment # 9” and “Your Good Girl is Gonna Go Bad” to your list. Please and thank you
Great reaction as usual. You two are always so thoughtful with your comments to try to get what the song means. You have done reactions to the Carpenters before. If you watch the movie called the Karen Carpenter story this is the song she sings at the beginning of the movie when she is just a very young teenager. A very good movie to watch to learn about her life and the struggles with her eating disorder that killed her at such a young age. Thank you.
Heartthrob 🎵 music 🎼🎶 Good stuff if you are breaking up with someone.
I like this song and a song by her and the great piano player Floyd Cramer. The song is “Last Date” by Floyd and “My Last Date with You” by Skeeter Davis accompanied by Floyd. They’re great! If you wanna listen to them, just type Last Date and My Last Date (with You) on RUclips. The video should show up.
Oh....oh.....I remember her.....the song played on the radio a lot!!!! I didn't know her name was "Skeeter Davis" I never paid too much to the song a little too slow for me....I was into Blood Sweat & Tears.....Three Dog Night.....The Beatles....Led Zeppelin....Steppenwolf....so slow songs like this for a male 13 years old was not in my DNA to listen to.....hahahahaha.....lol....hahahaha.....well ....thanks guys.....now I know her name. I like the song now!!!!
Female Friday coming up this week. Possible new artists: CHI COLTRANE (from the 70's, she plays a killer piano with a killer voice) -- "Thunder & Lightning" and "Turn Me Around" TONI BRAXTON (awesome, powerful voice) -- "Another Sad Love Song" from early 90's and for some late 60's early 70's British folk-rock with gorgeous voice = SANDY DENNY - "Who Knows Where The time Goes?" (She did solo work and lead singer for a few albums with Fairport Convention. The 3 albums she did with Fairport Convention along with Richard Thompson are often considered the "Heyday" period of the band. Also check out her on lead vocals with Fairport with songs "Matty Groves" and "Tam Lin" Richard Thompson composed some unique instrumental arrangements and with Sandy singing these songs are incredible :) She tragically died at age 31 in 1978.
OMG this is one of my very favorite songs of all time so glad you are experiencing it. A couple other cool songs from that era is one called 'Rubber Ball' by Bobby Vee and 'Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots' by the Cheers... omg your baby just came into the room ... such a beautiful baby.
My Skeeter 😊
Rolling Stone lost their mind with that Celine Dion situation. This song always reminds me of the movie “Girl Interrupted” which you should add to your list.
Thank you to Bethesda for using this song and others like it in Fallout 3 & 4.
Y'all have gorgeous kids!
This song was used in the movie "Eternals"
Huge hit
Keep this channel going, Love it.
Brings me back to slower times.
This song i do remember
She was from Grant County Kentucky and they have named a highway after her
Alright my babies.... Skeeter Davis ❓🤔 I've never heard of her. As for the song... I like the sound of her. Therefore, she gets my vote ‼️💯🎼🎶😁👍🏼
One of the vault dweller's faves.
Only thing more nostalgic than teen love is teen heartbreak.
By 69 I changed to FM where you wouldn't hear this because music had changed to Acid Rock. Would hear this at restaurants etc.
I will always think of Girl, Interrupted when I hear this ❤
She was one of our church members: Here is a memorial we did for her: ruclips.net/video/Q9B6y09qEGE/видео.html
It was shocking they snubbed Celine!
Luca is adorable
Always liked the lilt to this tune. Cheers....

"Mary Francis Davis" (Skeeter)
"Skeeter" I believe was short for "Mosquito."

This beautiful song was also in the movie Girl Interrupted. The Movie starred Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. You might want to put that one on your Movie Channel
Yes, I think of that film every time I hear this. RIP Brittany Murphy.
Skeeter Davis was an acquaintance of mine for a few years. I had her for an autographing at the bookstore I managed in the '90s and she did a full concert in our mall's center court. Got to hear her do "End of the World" live! Her voice was amazing!
Hey! That picture at 5:32 is from our autographing! My wife snapped that shot!
That's so cool! Thanks for sharing!
@@newodkin Wow! So cool.
Skeeter told a radio dj that this was about her mother's death.
Back to the 60s we go! (1962, to be exact.) Skeeter Davis (Real name: Mary Francis Penick) was a big name country star back in the 60s. This was her first MAJOR crossover hit. "I Can't Stay Mad At You" was another. She never had a #1 hit, but this song hit #2 on both the pop and country charts. She had a great career, and was one of Dolly Parton's biggest influences.
Skeeter Davis was so sweet singing this sad song! We all loved it and sang it together laughingly!
A beautiful song we can all relate to, and a classic breakup song 😅 timeless
Produced in Nashville by Chet Atkins, this was intended to be a Country record (hear the steel guitar) but it crossed over and became a huge Pop hit as well.
For any 'Baby Boomer' Generation folks, like myself, I think ALL of us are familiar with this song, and Remember & Love It! Easy to sing along to. :) Thx for Reacting to it Guys! PS- Cute to see little Luca trying to flash a smile with His pacifier! :)
Right on man!
Amen. And Dusty Springfield. County - pop goddesses.
@@ed.z. yezz indeed. DUSTY!
I am a 2001 and I play a game called “Fallout 4” and there is a radio station called “Diamond City Radio” and that is where I heard this song. Let me tell ya it hits completely different because on the game it is literally the end of the world. I fell in love with this song when I heard.
This was one of the most beautiful song's of the 60's. R.I.P. Ms Skeeter Davis
Her actual name was Mary Francis. She picked up the nickname Skeeter as a young girl from her grandfather who said she was always buzzing around the house like a "skeeter" (mosquito).
Jackie De Shannon
“What The World Needs Now Is Love , Sweet Love” great song and voice.
Also Needles and Pins…my favourite by Jackie De Shannon
I'm 66 years old now, and this has been one of my all time favorite songs since it was on the radio. I fell in love with her voice when I was just a little boy.
same here as well!
And me.. A great gentle and pure song
I met Skeeter back in the early 80's, My Mom was friends with her. She was such a sweet, humble lady. Mom was heartbroken when she passed. She was a soft spoken lady. RIP
No you didn't.
With the passing of Lisa Marie Presley, you should check out her music! RIP! 🙏
And Jeff Beck.
This song was released about six weeks after the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, where they were actual fears that it was the end of the world.
I was a kid living at Key West then and we really didn't know how close we were to war.
All I really knew was the military set up missiles on the beach a block from our house and put rolls and rolls of barbed wire up and down the beach.
the line "why does my heart go on beating, why do these eyes of mine cry" , MAKE ME CRY!....
Great song. You'd like Jackie DeShannon "What The World Needs Now Is Love"
I recommended that song and "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" around Thanksgiving.
Please react to the following:
Celine Dion - Immortality (with the Bee Gees in the background)
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad
Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side
Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For - Don't Speak
Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time
Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
RIP Skeeter Davis. Great voice. Wonderful song.
The most perfect lyrics of any song, ever. It would be impossible to express the subject matter any better.
she was my dad's favorite country singer when i was a kid ... i'm 67 now ... keep up the gr8 work!
