For female Friday you really need to do Jackie Deshannon "WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW" and "PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART"
Yyeeessss!!!
Im a regular hood dude doing food reviews on my RUclips channel lol
Jackie DeShannon's "Every Time You Walk in the Room" was also a big hit in the 60's!! Love her voice! Love y'all sooo much...keep up the wonderful work (fun!!)!!
Those are perfect for today. Perfect for then too. Maybe things don't really change much at all.
What he said.👍
The most perfect lyrics of any song, ever. It would be impossible to express the subject matter any better.
I got to see her at the Grand Ole Opry ! And she sounded the same ! The Grand Ole Opry is a live broadcast that showcases past present and future stars ! It’s in Nashville you can go to it and see it live but it’s also a radio show ! It’s been there for 96 years and still going strong !
Skeeter Davis was an acquaintance of mine for a few years. I had her for an autographing at the bookstore I managed in the '90s and she did a full concert in our mall's center court. Got to hear her do "End of the World" live! Her voice was amazing!
Hey! That picture at 5:32 is from our autographing! My wife snapped that shot!
That's so cool! Thanks for sharing!
@@newodkin Wow! So cool.
Skeeter told a radio dj that this was about her mother's death.
The Grand Ole Opry is a radio/tv show that showcases country acts. Its considered the Mecca of country music. It got its name from the fact it took the spot of an opera radio program. On the first episode the announcer said we are replacing the opera with opry. Its a huge deal to be invited to join the Opry as a member.
Skeeters recording of this song, was the first, and only time, a song cracked the top 5 on all 4 billboard charts, and was ranked the #2 song of 1963. When I started driving in the 70's, installed an 8 track tape player in my car with 2 9 inch speakers in the back so I could blast my Skeeter Davis tape. Love your reactions!
Her actual name was Mary Francis. She picked up the nickname Skeeter as a young girl from her grandfather who said she was always buzzing around the house like a "skeeter" (mosquito).
the line "why does my heart go on beating, why do these eyes of mine cry" , MAKE ME CRY!....
One of my favorite songs to finger-pick on the guitar with it's unique melody and rolling piano in the background.
Great song. Tell Luca, we said "Hi"
Is this really the FIRST time you ever heard this? It is NO DOUBT a combination of the SADDEST song ever combined with the most BEAUTIFUL song ever!!
Back to the 60s we go! (1962, to be exact.) Skeeter Davis (Real name: Mary Francis Penick) was a big name country star back in the 60s. This was her first MAJOR crossover hit. "I Can't Stay Mad At You" was another. She never had a #1 hit, but this song hit #2 on both the pop and country charts. She had a great career, and was one of Dolly Parton's biggest influences.
Skeeter Davis was so sweet singing this sad song! We all loved it and sang it together laughingly!
A beautiful song we can all relate to, and a classic breakup song 😅 timeless
This was one of the most beautiful song's of the 60's. R.I.P. Ms Skeeter Davis
I'm 66 years old now, and this has been one of my all time favorite songs since it was on the radio. I fell in love with her voice when I was just a little boy.
same here as well!
And me.. A great gentle and pure song
oh my goodness what a cute little baby boy you have just comes on looks adorable off he goes I'm smiling and that's a good thing because the song just put tears in my eyes
I met Skeeter back in the early 80's, My Mom was friends with her. She was such a sweet, humble lady. Mom was heartbroken when she passed. She was a soft spoken lady. RIP
No you didn't.
Jay and Amber the Grand Ole Opry is a weekly radio show that premiered on November 28th 1925 from Nashville Tennessee. It would show case the legends of country music and introduce new country music talent. Later when Television came along they would sometimes televise the shows. The radio show is still broadcast today on WSM radio . It was an honor back in the day to be invited to the Opry and that was how country music stars new they had made it to the "big time".
And you can watch a portion of it live on the Grand Ole Opry RUclips channel.
RIP Skeeter Davis. Great voice. Wonderful song.
I remember hearing this on AM radio as a little kid. I’m 55 now. Been a long time since I’ve heard this
One of favs. Her voice is magical.
Jackie De Shannon
“What The World Needs Now Is Love , Sweet Love” great song and voice.
Also Needles and Pins…my favourite by Jackie De Shannon
Thank you for bringing me this song; I haven't heard this song in many years. not since even oldies stations quit playing 50's and 60's Misuc.
she was my dad's favorite country singer when i was a kid ... i'm 67 now ... keep up the gr8 work!
Oh my, what a cutie pie; he is so big already! I love this song by Skeeter Davis. Karen Carpenter did a cover of this too, and of course it is fabulous too.!
This woman was actually raised around a bunch of crazy people. It's amazing that she ended up where she did.
YES! Takes me back. My step-dad used to play her records all the time.
As always you’ve done it again. I remember my gramma loved it and thanks for the memories.
Produced in Nashville by Chet Atkins, this was intended to be a Country record (hear the steel guitar) but it crossed over and became a huge Pop hit as well.
Born December 30, 1931 and died of Breast Cancer September 19, 2004 at age 72. She was a great crossover star.
The Grand Ole Opry is a live radio show on WSM in Nashville Tennessee that began broadcasting in 1925. It had a very strong signal you could pick it up from several states over, thanks to NBC. Most of the country stars had a gospel/folk upbringing in the mountains and southern states and Bluegrass music came from there. It was the dream of Country/Western singers to get on the Grand Ole Opry to be heard, long before there were videos or television. It was hard to get on it if you didn't already have a record deal. And they had high standards and expected you to never miss an advertised performance. Which Hank Williams Sr missed performances and got fired. The Outlaw movement started when frustrated singers didn't fit into their mold, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and many others went to Austin Texas to perform on Austin City Limits which was broadcasts on PBS TV stations. A lot of folk singers got a boost from going to Austin.
Oh yes... many a teenage girl listened to this song when their first love broke their heart. Been there, done that. 💔 That baby boy ALWAYS makes me smile. I just want to squeeze him. ;)
Skeeter Davis was my dad's favorite artist. When she came on the radio in the car, dad was like "Ok, sit down and hush now."
For any 'Baby Boomer' Generation folks, like myself, I think ALL of us are familiar with this song, and Remember & Love It! Easy to sing along to. :) Thx for Reacting to it Guys! PS- Cute to see little Luca trying to flash a smile with His pacifier! :)
Right on man!
Amen. And Dusty Springfield. County - pop goddesses.
@@ed.z. yezz indeed. DUSTY!
I am a 2001 and I play a game called “Fallout 4” and there is a radio station called “Diamond City Radio” and that is where I heard this song. Let me tell ya it hits completely different because on the game it is literally the end of the world. I fell in love with this song when I heard.
Hearing this one at the time was a favorite. It was also covered by Brenda Lee and Herman's Hermits .
This is my parent's generation of music and I heard it growing up all the time! Great reaction!
What a precious little one on Mamma's lap! Awwww.....so sweet! ♥
This song was released about six weeks after the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, where they were actual fears that it was the end of the world.
I was a kid living at Key West then and we really didn't know how close we were to war.
All I really knew was the military set up missiles on the beach a block from our house and put rolls and rolls of barbed wire up and down the beach.
As old as this song is.... it never Really gets Old !!! So, so wonderful.
People who had a major heartbreak in life understand what she says. I did feel this in my life. I still love this song.
Currently going through it my high school lover of 11 years left me
Feels like it was yesterday but it's actually almost been two years and I can't get over it for some reason
I haven’t heard this in forever! I always loved this song. I grew up with my mom listening to it. Thanks for the memories.
A British Invasion group Herman’s Hermits covered this song on their 1965 “Herman’s Hermits On Tour” LP.
One of my favourite female country singer and this is one of her best songs. Please check out her songs "A dear John letter", "Gonna get along without you now" and "My last date".
I Can't Stay Mad at You... another great song by Skeeter!
One of my all-time favorites from the way back country female singer songs is Donna Fargo's "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" oh, when she does that line "now you be careful, gotta go, I love you, have a beautiful day".... wow.
Aww!!💕How sweet!! Luca!! Thank you for coming to see us!!!
For a minute I thought Mr. Luca was holding daddy’s new bell for new artists on the channel, thought he was going to hide bell 🛎 number two!!
What a Handsome young man you guys have. Enjoy every minute of him
I am a grown up man, but every time I hear this song it makes me wanna cry. Thanks for the reaction!
I always hear this tune, twice. So beautiful.
For Female Friday, check out a lady who passed just recently, Susan Jacks, lead singer of The Poppy Family, a Canadian band of the early Seventies. Susan had a voice that was poignant and powerful, plucking the heartstrings like a soulful guitar.
She was best known in the States for the song, "Which Way You Goin', Billy".
Thank you for sharing. One of my favorites by skeeter davis. Her real name was Mary Penick. She was born and raised in Kentucky and lived on a farm. End Of The World came out in 1963
“The Grand Ole Opry” is a Country music radio show that airs on Friday and Saturday nights on 650 WSM Nashville, Tennessee. The radio show has been continuously broadcast for almost a century. For a number of years, the radio show was broadcast nationally on NBC Radio. In 1927, when the program was first aired for the first time on NBC Radio, the first musical guest was African-American Blues harmonica player DeFord Bailey. Years later, in the late-1960s, Bailey returned to perform for their televised anniversary show. His performance is available for viewing here on RUclips.
Awww so happy to see Little Luca !!!!! Such a beautiful boy 🥰
The Grand Ole Opry is a long-running live country radio show originally aired from the Ryman Auditorium and now airs from Opryland. Most of the performers on the show are known as "Members" of the Opry and you can only become a member upon invitation of a current member. The Opry's membership acts as a kind of living Hall of Fame with both living legends and current artists regularly performing on the show.
Almost. They never broadcasted from the Opryland theme park, but instead build a huge freestanding building near the park. That location is still used by the Opry to this day, even 30 years after the park shuttered. The park was eventually leveled and they built a huge mall there called Opry Mills. Of course, the Opryland hotel is still near there and in use.
Both are worth a visit.
The Grand Ole Opry is known as the church of Country Music.
Opry members are required to perform on the broadcast an a regular basis. This is why George Strait isn't a member. He lives on his Texas ranch and has no desire to be in Nashville that often!
What a beautiful child you have. I love listening to you guys reacting to the music of my life.
Here is a category with 3 songs for your future consideration: Songs from the 60s and 70s that were prominently used in weddings. 1) Wedding Song by Paul Stookey (I think you will fall in love with this song) 2) Precious and Few by Climax and 3) We've Only Just Begun by The Carpenters.
Another great childhood memory on the books, with this song. Thanks so much for this reaction! ✌💙✌
This was my heartbreak song.
I think it was everyone’s.😢❤
I remember this song so well from my childhood. Thanks for the memories.
This was a giant hit!
These oldies are heavy for us older folks… my parents are in their 70’s and we grew up listening to this music from them, my step mom of 35 years passed away a few years ago and these always remind me of her playing them!
Love Skeeter Davis
Thanks for showing us your little baby! Cutes alert so much! God Bless all y'all!
Ya'll are a blessing to me!!!! Love seeing Luca 💜 God bless y'all
I enjoyed the reaction and I’ve heard this song many times. A great song. The best part of it is when Luca came in and joined the show.
End Of The World went to #2 on the pop charts and was Skeeter Davis biggest hit. A song from her that's more uptempo which I think you'll really enjoy is her other top 10 hit "I Can't Stay Mad At You".
This was the ultimate heartbreak song! I think everyone back in those days knew this song and sang along with tears!!! It's such a beautiful song!
So nice to see your little boy in the video...I think he looks just like mom, with a little bit of dad thrown in. My oldest kids are older than you guys are now.....enjoy them when they are young, time goes quickly.
When I was a small town teenager in the 60s the local radio station would broadcast about three hours of requests and dedications every evening where you could phone in a request and dedicate it to someone - maybe you and your girl’s special song or whatever. This was quite common in 60s radio around the country. When you heard this song requested and it was like, “to Judy from Bill”, you knew that Bill just got dumped and was playing his last card to win her back. Simple times.
Thank you for recognising that there is nothing between you and the singer's voice but a microphone and a recording device...no auto-tune, no computer "clean up", just powerful full talent Such a beautiful voice, almost as beautiful as your family!
It is said that the person who wrote the song was inspired by the passing of her dad. Brenda Lee did a great version as well.
My grandmother was serving lunch to Skeeter Davis and Hank Snow at Gwynn Oak Park in Baltimore. After hitting it off with them, she took her 13 year old grandson (me) over to sit and eat with them. They gave me their autographs and I later saw her perform this song live.
Many late night radio shows would sign off for the night with this song. One of the saddest songs of my youth.
I love this song and the way she sings it. And thanks for the gem of your beautiful child coming into the picture at the end!
Skeeter did a great song called Up The Ladder of Success. Awesome '60's pop song.
I saw Skeeter Davis in the early 1980s at the Chatham empire theatre, she was on the bill with boxcar Willie she sounded great boxcar Willie was his brilliant self, we really enjoyed the gig, I thought I didn't know who she was but when she started singing I knew All of her songs.
Oh! I love it when you take me down memory lane! I remember singing along to Skeeter as I rollerskated with friends as a teenager. Thanks for the memory you lovely pair. Say "hello from England" to that darling little boy of yours 🇬🇧💖🇺🇸
She has many many more good songs, contemporary country and gospel country. I just like looking at her, just reminds me of an old friend.
Love this ladies singing.
I saw her in Birmingham Alabama at Boutwell Auditorium in a show called WVOK shower of Stars. She appeared with Jan and Dean also Jerry Lee Lewis and a band from England called The Missing Links, some of whom wound up in the great Moody Blues. She was sweet and delicate just like her songs. She was actually the reason I wanted to go to the show.
I loved Skeeter. Her bio-book "Bus Fare To Kentucky" is incredible. A lotta hardships she endured.
OMG, look at that beautiful little boy!❤
My favorite female singer of all-time! What a beautiful voice. A cross between country & pop. Her sad songs always put tears in my eyes. A couple of absolute killers are "Optimistic" and the Charlie Chaplin-penned "Smile". Jay wondered about her nickname "Skeeter." As a child she was often underfoot and adults tagged her as Skeeter, short for "Mosqueeter" (Mosquito). Her real last name was Penick but she partnered up with a gal named Betty Davis and they became the Davis Sisters in the 1950s, but Betty was killed in an auto accident that also left Skeeter injured. Skeeter then teamed up with Betty's sister, Georgia. But they didn't click. Skeeter carried on alone, retaining the Davis name. Rob Squad, please listen to Skeeter's 1963 hit "I Can't Stay Mad at You", a great one written by Gerry Goffin & Carole King.
What a beautiful voice she has....and you guys have such a cute toddler!!!
The young, child like quality really speaks to the pain of those lost young loves, that I, at the age of 70 still can recall and cry for.
This is what is called a "Torch song" - a song longing for unrequited love - THANK YOU
Amazing song, amazing artist. And I always love when we get to see your cute little guy!
I grew up with country music . The grand Ole opry is "the mother house for country music" . We watched it all the time when I was kid back when it was show housed at the ryman auditorium. In 1976 They moved to what now is called the Opry house . The Grand Ole opry started with a radio show and then moved Ryman auditorium back in the 30s or 40s . At one time you could not move forward with your country career until you were featured on the Grand Ole opry . They still have a show on circle network . Most of my growing up years they were at the Ryman .
With the passing of Lisa Marie Presley, you should check out her music! RIP! 🙏
And Jeff Beck.
Karen Carpenter also sang this song years later, beautiful song.
I love Skeeter's music. I would like to see you do a reaction to Sandy Posey singing "I Take It Back".
You just had to love this song, she sang it beautifully!❤
Love Skeeter's voice!! So beautiful!!! Luca is so precious!!
And the grand old Opry is the music hall of country music! There was a radio station that played country & hillbilly) music and sent it all over the country starting back in the 25’s. Johnny Cash played there, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, etc. etc., all the greats. They knew that if they got asked to play at the grand old Opry they had made it in country music. It was an old church beforehand, the Ryman Auditorium. And it’s in Nashville Tennessee. Very special place.
I must have heard this on the oldies station because it's definitely familar.
Skeeter Davis actually wrote this song for her father who passed away when Davis was still fairly young.
Skeeter Davis did not write this song. The lady who wrote it wrote it thinking about her father, something that has been misquoted as being Skeeter's story.
Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee were the writers of End of the World.
A favorite from my teen years. What a beautiful and emotional song! Just as good now as it was all those years ago.
Wife here.., WOW.., The 60's Pop you guys have been doing lately was alot of my Mother's FAVORITE 's..THANK YOU So Much!!❣💞
The Grand Ol Opry is the "Apollo" of country music. Every one who is anyone has sang on her stage. The artists are invited to join and they are required to make so many appearances each year. The Opry is televised weekly and can be found on the radio as well.
OMG, I was just listening to this song the other day. So, so good.
This song was in the top 5 of the country, pop. adult contemporary, and R&B charts, and was covered from everyone from Herman's Hermits to Patti Smith.
