Before fixing that metal piece, the workaround is to double tap the switch on the front of the shifter if you get the Shift To Park message. Turn the engine off first. On my '16 LT, it works every time, and the message has become less frequent.

Thanks again for the video. I found a video telling me how to remove the trim panel. It also had the shift knob removal. However, I was able to loosen and slide the panel up the shift lever far enough to see into the shift control mechanism. I managed to pry off the little cover that hides the micro switch and access the problem tab. I made a tool by putting a slight (30deg.?) bend in the top of a 1/8th inch metal rod. I then used that rob place under the micro switch tab, for leverage while bending the tip of the tab downwards. (It sounds more complicated than it is). I did this because without completely removing the trim I found it difficult to get to it with pliers and also didn’t want to risk twisting the metal tab. Anyhow, bottom line: it did the job! No parts required, but I did get a few cuts and scratches from sharp edges in the trim panel. Thanks again! Great video! Easy and no-cost fix!
Well I'm glad to hear that you had the problem fixed, I just want people to see how simple this problem is to fixed and it can be done in DIY and save hundreds of dollars.
Thank you very much for the detailed views. That part is called a microswitch. This one appears to be made by Omron. Very common. Chances are the internal contacts are wearing, maybe from arcing. Maybe underrated for the application. Anyway if mine ('18 Volt) goes bad out of warranty I might just replace the microswitch.
The "problem" with a replacement switch (GENUINE Delco) is that it is made in Korea! What could possibly be wrong with that picture? If you could find an AMERICAN MADE micro switch that would fit, I would even go so far as to EPOXY it in place. I just would NOT trust a Korean OR Chinese part. I don't care if it says "genuine GM part"!!! Places like "Mouser" and "digikey" carry QUALITY electronic parts, IF you can make it fit! It WILL last forever!
Omg thank you!!! You have no idea how much help this was. I have a 2017 and started having this issue, I was planning on having my mechanic look at it but now I’ll see if I can do it. Can you make a video on how you took it apart to get to that area??? Thx👏🏽
Power to the people! Great job Albert. GM can take the $600+ labor and parts bill and shove it. For one lousy switch even. I work with these switches all the time in pinball machines. The last couple years, they have gotten crappy. Thanks Omron!
I worked (I'm retired) on various pieces of electric and electronic equipment, and if the brand wasn't Cherry, an intermittent switch would be a bad switch very soon. It ain't just the "flipper', the internals just aren't up to even standard use. Bending will probably last awhile, but we need to know how to remove the console without breaking a bunch of plastic so when the time comes for a rebend, we can get in again.
To get the “fix” to work, I had to use a flat bladed screwdriver under the metal lever and needle nose pliers to bend the end of the lever down. This puts more of a bend in the metal lever and a much more positive click when you let go of the trigger.
yeah i was going to say, he didn't even do anything in this video, many people would reassemble it and have the same issue. the problem really is the microswitch itself, so putting a bit more force on it may buy some more time, so a more proactive bend to the arm would be necessary. i also found that slipping my finger off the park release button gets the same result to get the vehicle to turn off for the time being until i can repair it properly.

Thank you for the video...this is exactly what I'm experiencing, 2018 Chev. Malibu. I'll look to your video on how to remove the cover or cowling of the center console /shifter.
@@adamtownsend8145 That didn't work, I ended up cutting a piece off a plastic lid and wrapping it with 3m double sided tape and placed it on the metal tab below the button. I haven't had an issue since.
@@juliamartinez3579 there is a metal tab that makes contact with a button when you place the shifter in park. I placed it on the metal tab so it makes better contact with the button.
I am planning to replace the "genuine GM " (made in Korea LMFAO) micro-switch. I have NOT had any issues, YET! But, I don't want to have to F**K around WHEN (not IF) the micro-switch acts up. I have a slightly different plan in mind. I am going to wire an "external" toggle switch in parallel with the micro. This way I can flip the EXTERNAL switch and get myself out of a "potential" jam!
Thanks for the video but I still don't know how to remove that center cover console, how to remove the shifter knob and how to remove (without breaking it!) that plastic cover over the micro switch. So other than those glaring omissions, great video.
Instead of bending the metal piece and breaking the plastic where it's holding from. You can always cut a tiny piece of duble sided tape, and put it on the metal plate right by where it meets the switch button. I used Alien Tape, it's clear, strong and has the right tickness to push the button further in.
It just happened to my daughters 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. There is no excuse for Chevrolet using this type of cheap component. It's been going on with these shifters for years. It's this kind of nonsense that turns potential customers away from Chevrolet. For it to be going on for years in various Chevrolet and GMC models is obviously a deliberate build and ultimately inexcusable! It's not like Chevrolet and GMC doesn't know. This needs to be exposed on a National level.
I went to the DEALERSHIP. The guy wearing an Oxford shirt (not a tech, but more of a 'manager', suggested that the problem was that I had my hair ties on the gear shift. Then he tried to charge me just under $800 to fix it. It's still not fixed, but I am in an apartment, and don't have a garage... and it's not a big deal. It's annoying. But yes, he did rankle my feathers by trying to tell me, a grown woman, who is not certified as Mentally or Intellectually Deficient, that my hair ties were the problem.
My girlfriends 2021 trailblazer is seeing a similar issue. thanks for the video. I'ts been 4 years since the video, did you have to revisit the issue? If so what did you do as a better fix?
@@princetonjohnson5826 As far as taking it apart you have to find other vids to help if you don't know. Once inside your shifter it should look just like whats in this vid and you can follow the instructions from there. Its been a couple of years since I did it. It's kinda hard to remember what I did.
Dealership wants $300+ dollars to replace the entire thing but I’m having the same issue you described. Gonna take my car back and try this! How do you remove the top?
This problem happened in my fiance's 2016 Malibu. I followed the steps in this video and it didn't help solve the issue. So I looked up the whole shifter assembly instead and bought one for 90ish dollars off some gm wholesale part website. That was the trick. Takes a little more time to figure out but you are replacing the whole assembly so the fix will be more permanent.
the little plastic cover fell further into the gear assembly when I popped it off and I cannot reach down to retrieve it. Any places I can get just the little black plastic cover or do you think I will be fine without it?
Yeah eventually you have to do something to that metal arm that contacts the button. I cut aluminum can to the same size as the arm and super glue 3 together and where it would contact the button I put a little piece of foam weather stripping with adhesive. Has worked for a year and a half like that now.
maybe instead of bending it we can soldier on something to keep it from fatigue from bending it or risk breaking it. or maybe epoxy on a piece of plastic to thicken it up, etc.
Wow... I’m going to a dealer tomorrow to fix this, just decided to check RUclips first... not sure what to do now, they will probably charge me a lot for this tiny fix...
Dealers are going to look at charging roughly $85-100 to inspect the issue, then another $700 to fix. Definitely try this fix before hand if you are out of warranty. If you are still within your warranty and want the Dealership to just replace it then by all means go ahead. This issue has been a reoccurring issue on most 2016-19 models of GM vehicles. Good Luck!
@@kylegilchrist7421 So far they promised to fix it for ~450$ (and already gave me papers with the estimate) and I'm just waiting for some parts to arrive. I was lucky enough to meet a professional agent at the dealer shop and all I had to do is to say "I have a 'shift to park problem'". He was familiar with it and just gave me a paper where I say that I deny a full diagnosis process. Will check them back in a few days.
JESSE MOLINA the price depends on the state and town a lot. I’ve fixed it for $450 in San Jose (California) and skipped the whole diagnostic thing. Works fine now, one year later.
My 2016 had it about 6 months ago.. and now again.. I bent the metal clip with a bic pen and the problem went away for like 6 months. It's been sitting a LOT lately since "STAY HOME" so I'd imagine it's kinda built in a memory. I agree GM should engineer this better and FIX IT.. some dealers are charging anything from $0 to $1,000 to FIX.. and a 2014 Chevy Camaro has a Radio issue.. popping noise then no radio except for XM the FIX for that was to pull the radio out and clip the white wire on the end of the plug that goes into the radio. it seems as though this problem occurs only on the low end models. Like those without a backup camera...it's some sort of communications wire.. my guess is it's designed for the rear camera and causes some sort of weird short via some program logic but IDK. Back to the Malibu.. I'll probably try a metal pen clip to stiffen the switch...All vehicles these days are suffering these dumb problems.. it's not just GM but they need to work on these issues for sure!!!!
I took the cover off by putting the car in neutral, pulling up the charging cup, then gently pulling up and back on the console. Slid right back into place easily. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR PARKING BRAKE IS ON 1ST!
@juliamartinez 1st put the E brake on, then I lifted the cover where the gear shift is after putting the car in neutral. Then I bent the lil flat piece so it makes a connection properly. It lasted a long time, then i sold the car. Hopefully this helps you out. 😁
I think I saw a post somewhere else and they linked this to being the micro switch. www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Omron-Electronics/D2HW-BL221H?qs=%2Fha2pyFadugwl%252B3TPyDpiZmcvqnbEaXszFNtkzsfERd7BBQEiFQTHg%3D%3D Not sure though.
So I’ve done all this and can visually see the piece of metal hitting the blue button but my dashboard still keeps telling me to shift to park. Because of this I can’t properly turn on or off my car. Could there be a fuse issue?
My car was doing the same thing and we could literally see it hitting the sensor but it wasn't hitting it hard enough so I took a popsicle stick and wedge it in between the sensor and metal part and I made it long enough so it won't move and I took some foam and put on the cover before I coverd it back up....i hope this help

Thank you very much. Extremely helpful
Thanks for the vid👍same issue with my 2018 malibu...
Taking my 2018 Redline into the dealership for this same issue tomorrow. Luckily still under 36k miles for the warranty.
That’s them China parts!!! Good video sir.
Thank you
Thanks for the video but I still don't know how to remove that center cover console, how to remove the shifter knob and how to remove (without breaking it!) that plastic cover over the micro switch. So other than those glaring omissions, great video.
Thanks bro. I have a 2017 , 50k : same issue, will double click first. Then will try to open shift box and bend metal. $500 fix at Chevy dealer
Is it worth buying a 17 Malibu. Cuz I’m definitely thinking about getting one.
It’s a money making scheme.
Honestly it's not rocket science lol idk why they tell people these potential problems.
My girlfriends 2021 trailblazer is seeing a similar issue. thanks for the video.
I'ts been 4 years since the video, did you have to revisit the issue? If so what did you do as a better fix?
I seen it a few times but my girlfriend tells me it's rare for that message to pop out again.
Im going to try this on my 2013 Malibu ltz. Hopefully it works. Thanks for the info.
Did it every work? Having issues with my Malibu 2013 as well
@@princetonjohnson5826 Yep it works. Its just quite a bit to take apart.
Mr.Guyton so I’m going to attempt this, any advice? Does this tutorial work with the 2013 model? I just want it to be fixed lol
@@princetonjohnson5826 As far as taking it apart you have to find other vids to help if you don't know. Once inside your shifter it should look just like whats in this vid and you can follow the instructions from there. Its been a couple of years since I did it. It's kinda hard to remember what I did.
You can buy the little micro switch and replace it if you can solder very easy.
Does the microswitch open the circuit or close it? Knowing this could use a higher quality microswitch and get you out of this problem for life!
You can also replace that microswitch. I just did it in my 2021 Malibu RS. The microswitch was only $15 on Amazon.
This is why I love RUclips. If you have the time could you post how to remove the trim? I’m also trying to fix for the girlfriend. Thanks brotha!
I bougth the whole shifter and i still have the shift to park issue
Can you tell me how you get the shifting handle off and the clip covering the metal piece?
Dealership wants $300+ dollars to replace the entire thing but I’m having the same issue you described. Gonna take my car back and try this!
How do you remove the top?
Use a thin flat head!!!
Thank you!!! So how do I take the cover panel off??🙏🏽
Thanks!
Mine just started doing it.
the little plastic cover fell further into the gear assembly when I popped it off and I cannot reach down to retrieve it.
These are very good ideas but since then the car has been working great.
@@albertvenegas2077 thank you for posting this...im gonna tackle this issue this weekend....on my Volt.
Did it last? Thank you.
Thank you for that video. can you please do a video to show how you removed the center shift console cover?
Artem Klimov So you did deny the diagnostic test? I just called they will charge me 150 for that and then for the parts and labor which is dumb.
JESSE MOLINA the price depends on the state and town a lot. I’ve fixed it for $450 in San Jose (California) and skipped the whole diagnostic thing. Works fine now, one year later.
How did you remove that interior trim piece that covers the shifter?
Trying to fix this on my 2017 Malibu. That small plastic piece that covers the metal switch you adjusted. What’s the best way to take that off?
Does the microswitch open the circuit or close it? Knowing this could use a higher quality microswitch and get you out of this problem for life!
I took the cover off by putting the car in neutral, pulling up the charging cup, then gently pulling up and back on the console. Slid right back into place easily. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR PARKING BRAKE IS ON 1ST!
Byron Bunn can you go into a little more detail, if you don’t mind
@@KamJChandler did you get it done? I JUST saw the comment.
Byron Bunn can u explain a little more plz
@juliamartinez 1st put the E brake on, then I lifted the cover where the gear shift is after putting the car in neutral. Then I bent the lil flat piece so it makes a connection properly. It lasted a long time, then i sold the car. Hopefully this helps you out. 😁
How do you pull apart the counsel to get to it?
How do you pull it off? The dealership was going to charge me $380
Did you get it fixed? 380 want to replace the whole unit? I thought it was under warranty for transmission?
I have the same problem well kinda my shifter won’t let me shift out of park and my lights when out as well could this be the problem as well for it ?
Is this the powertrain warranty problem? Because I’m at 40,000 miles which is beyond my bumper-to-bumper
If you break it, what is it called to replace it?
Does anyone know if this is covered by the powertrain warranty?
Did you post a video on how to remove the console??
thank you for help
Use a 0.2mm thicker gauge of stainless steel in the lever on that microswitch, and this problem would never happen. WTF, Omron.
Could you please let me know the link to buy this microswitch? thanks!
Same, question - part# for the microswitch? or could you just "thicken" the metal piece with?
@@adamtownsend8145 I regret to tell you both, I do not know a part number or a source for the switch. My post was simply lamenting the situation :-(
I think I saw a post somewhere else and they linked this to being the micro switch.

How do you remove the console to get to that area?

My 2018 Chevy Camaro just started flashing on the dash "shift to park" even though it's on park. I wiggle the shifter and sometimes it goes away.
I have a 2017 Camaro and I’m doing the exact same thing. It’s a headache lol
@@Jerry-xr1gf I took it to the dealership and informed them that there's issues on Camaro's and on Malibu's. They gave me an extended warranty which covered the part but not the diagnosis. I contacted GM and they are going to try and work something out. I'm not sure what they can do or if they will do anything to help. It sucks that knowing that there's an issue with multiple models with the same issue they still don't recall it or help with the full cost. Obviously it's a faulty part.
Richard Salomon Exactly, I’m too scared to take it to a dealership knowing that they’re gonna charge me like $800.
@@Jerry-xr1gf They were charging me $150 for diagnosing it and $160 to replace the shifter. They say they will charge for the diagnosis only. Obviously by watching these RUclips videos and going on Gen 6 forums I had previously known the issue. Only reason I went to the dealrship is for the problem to be fixed properly by Chevy professionals so that if it continues its their problem and they can have on record that these issues happen. I believe they should be responsible for these type of manufacturing weaknesses in GM vehicles.
Richard Salomon so in total you would’ve had to pay $310?
