2016, 2017, 2018, chevy malibu parking shifter error. How to fix it
I'd try my best to be detailed and specific in how you can fix the problem when shifting into park and not getting the, "shift to park" screen

You can also replace that microswitch. I just did it in my 2021 Malibu RS. The microswitch was only $15 on Amazon.
Dealership will charge 800-900
Help me, I already bought everything new, but it still doesn't do anything. I also bought (harness 84733196) and (GMC 84955381) and it doesn't do anything. Who can help me please? I've been without a car for 2 weeks.
I bougth the whole shifter and i still have the shift to park issue
Instead of bending the metal piece and breaking the plastic where it's holding from. You can always cut a tiny piece of duble sided tape, and put it on the metal plate right by where it meets the switch button. I used Alien Tape, it's clear, strong and has the right tickness to push the button further in.
Did it last? Thank you.
Can you tell me how you get the shifting handle off and the clip covering the metal piece?
How do you pull apart the counsel to get to it?
If you break it, what is it called to replace it?
I am planning to replace the "genuine GM " (made in Korea LMFAO) micro-switch. I have NOT had any issues, YET! But, I don't want to have to F**K around WHEN (not IF) the micro-switch acts up. I have a slightly different plan in mind. I am going to wire an "external" toggle switch in parallel with the micro. This way I can flip the EXTERNAL switch and get myself out of a "potential" jam!
My girlfriends 2021 trailblazer is seeing a similar issue. thanks for the video. I'ts been 4 years since the video, did you have to revisit the issue? If so what did you do as a better fix?
I seen it a few times but my girlfriend tells me it's rare for that message to pop out again.
That’s them China parts!!! Good video sir.
Thank you
Appreciate the video i wish i would of seen this. i went through two batteries and 500 at the shop for the same result.
Thank you for the video! Saved me $375 from the dealer. Had a good feeling it would not be worth it.
Does the microswitch open the circuit or close it? Knowing this could use a higher quality microswitch and get you out of this problem for life!
Thanks for the video but I still don't know how to remove that center cover console, how to remove the shifter knob and how to remove (without breaking it!) that plastic cover over the micro switch. So other than those glaring omissions, great video.
Had the same problem on my 2017 Opel Astra. Thank you. Saved me a trip to a mechanic
I went to the DEALERSHIP. The guy wearing an Oxford shirt (not a tech, but more of a 'manager', suggested that the problem was that I had my hair ties on the gear shift. Then he tried to charge me just under $800 to fix it. It's still not fixed, but I am in an apartment, and don't have a garage... and it's not a big deal. It's annoying. But yes, he did rankle my feathers by trying to tell me, a grown woman, who is not certified as Mentally or Intellectually Deficient, that my hair ties were the problem.
Honestly it's not rocket science lol idk why they tell people these potential problems.
I've used this trick for the last few years on my 2017 Malibu. It's like a 4 cent spring. Pathetic this stops the whole car from working. I just had the problem again. broke the spring off this time - this is in the cold pouring rain after work. Not happy about it, I came inside and watched this video again, hoping to get a good look at the spring and switch. Just managed to get the spring back in place and super glued the hell out of it. I've got the battery disconnected for the night to let the glue set. I'll keep you posted on the results. Gonna be a extra early morning...
Super Glue didn't work. Not sure it had time to set in the Cold rainy weather last night. Hooked the Battery back up and drove to work where i disconnected the battery again. Headed to my Mechanic tomorrow. Might try a putting a piece of tape over the button just for kicks - not sure if the car with drive with the button pressed though. I'll keep y'all posted.....
Thank you bro really appreciate it fixed it in under 10 minutes 👍
I was just quoted $600 to fix this. Thank you!
OMG!!!!
I have 2019 and it just started happening to me. I agree they should recall they haven't improved it. I hope you still look at your replies. You have helped me so much now I can share it with my husband so he can fix it. Thank you. Did you ever have to go back in?
Thank you!
Why not just put a pea sized amount of jb weld on the arm below the button? I've got a 2020 fully loaded premier doing this.
Thank you! I have been squeezing the button on the gearshift to get the message to clear. Two quick squeezes usually clears it but sometimes I have to step on the brake when I do it.
thank you for help
the little plastic cover fell further into the gear assembly when I popped it off and I cannot reach down to retrieve it. Any places I can get just the little black plastic cover or do you think I will be fine without it?
I have the same problem well kinda my shifter won’t let me shift out of park and my lights when out as well could this be the problem as well for it ?
You can buy the little micro switch and replace it if you can solder very easy.

Thank you
Imagine all those poor assholes who paid for a complete replacement only to see this happen again.
Its called a switch, amigo.
Thanks for the knowledge brother! My 2017 Malibu started this drama about 3 months ago.
i did that same thing and had to do it again and a gain… this is the real fix for it and cost less then 15 bucks its a bipass relay.. this is the GM service bulletin static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10166630-9999.pdf i
I had my whole shifter replaced under warranty but good to know for the future when the warranty expires. Great camera view. Thank you.
It just happened to my daughters 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. There is no excuse for Chevrolet using this type of cheap component. It's been going on with these shifters for years. It's this kind of nonsense that turns potential customers away from Chevrolet. For it to be going on for years in various Chevrolet and GMC models is obviously a deliberate build and ultimately inexcusable! It's not like Chevrolet and GMC doesn't know. This needs to be exposed on a National level.
It’s a money making scheme.
ruclips.net/video/BFuxtSAD87c/видео.html this is a tear down video of the microswitch causing the shift to park error message
This works! I have a Chevy Malibu (2019). Got the error after about a year.
Yeah eventually you have to do something to that metal arm that contacts the button. I cut aluminum can to the same size as the arm and super glue 3 together and where it would contact the button I put a little piece of foam weather stripping with adhesive. Has worked for a year and a half like that now.
So I don’t see that piece at all on mine
They wanted to charge me $445 for a whole new shifter!!!!!!!
