You talking about the common posts on the message board cracked me up. I do some work on a Facebook group for tourists, and it's clear 99% of people don't bother to look at the page at all before posting. Every other post is "what hotel should I stay at?" Then "is this place safe?" And then "where should I eat?" If they just looked at the board for 30 seconds they'd have dozens of answers without having to ask again. Plus, most of the questions are answered in some pinned stuff. But folks don't check. Don't even get me going on the "would I like X?" questions, which are off topic, but also infuriating.
I just got that pack of cardboard minis. They should be handy. I am NOT getting back into painting (collecting) miniatures.
This is a handy video. I've dabbled in solo gaming, but I have so little focus and so many things distracting me. I have the same problem with reading, but with reading I can take the bus or the train somewhere and it gives me time to focus on the book. With solo-RPGing, I need to make myself sit down at a table and do something, which isn't my strong suit. Putting my bullshit away is definitely a good idea and something to work on.
I have a similar opinion of Four Against Darkness. I used it to help me make dungeons during Dungeon 23, but as far as actually playing it, it feels too dry and procedural. My most successful and rewarding game so far has been Thousand Year Old Vampire. I think I lean toward the journaling side of things, which I guess makes sense as I'm a writer.

oh, man. it took me a couple of sessions with different games (rpgs and board games) to figure out what I actually prefer in my solo games. and now I created a nice sandbox style rpg in space that fits me perfectly. I think it’s very important to look for different systems and mechanics because you never know what you’ll enjoy the most. sometimes you can find a neat mechanic and just use that mechanic only.
I think my main advice to anyone trying to start a solo rpg is to find something very simple at first, like micro chap rpg for example.
and after playing a one session (without even finishing it) you can try to figure out if you actually enjoyed the process or not, and if not then why? is the system isn’t deep enough? is there not enough narrative elements? is it just not that fun to play solo for you? and from that you can then easily pin point what to do next and how to improve the experience or just drop the idea all together :)

Nice video bud :-) I`ve actually been role playing and wargaming solo since about 1974. Played with others (clubs, groups, friends, family, etc) but my solo games have existed most of my life (I was actually playing solo long before D&D, back in the days of Chainmail). I guess at this stage, I probably have at least 10000 pages of notes, background fluff, self published novels, and short stories. So playing a single on going campaign solo in this way is extremely rewarding... and your words about self critisizing is soooo true. Its took me twenty years to overcome this and find my personal hobby grail. Also, I totally agree about tech... apart from my computer (which I use to communicate with others), I have never and will never use phone aps, tablet aps, or any of that stuff... I still like the good old fashioned hands on at the table approach :-)

this actually rules because "solo rpg" games seem relatively recent as a distinct phenomenon (or at least marketed as such), and I think it's awesome to know there were people out there doing the damn thing on their own without anyone's permission. In the end, it's the story we write to ourselves that's the only book that matters

Great video! Dedicated Solo RPG type. One of the things I look for in a solo system is, is it “craftable” can I make cards, extra tables. Selecting just the right oracles and NPC creation tools for the game. Putting it all together in a 3ring, properly indexed. Then thinking about the proper way to journal this game. Some games are very light others more intense. Each has a place, time and mood for me. Interesting that you mentioned Jung. I have a set of character archetypes in my head I use in almost every game. The concept works, even for games like Mausritter! The hardest thing is to get over performative journaling. I have horrible handwriting and can barely draw a stick person. I used to get so intimidated by those beautiful ones. Now I just find images online and paste them in and try my best at writing legible.
Right now I am prepping a new game, Apothecaria. Very low combat game about being a village witch/herbalist. Combining it with the Iron Valley oracles. Creating affliction cards and reagent tables. No need to pull out my standees.(can’t paint figures😢).

    • @amanisalone
      @amanisalone  2 месяца назад +1

I think about coming up with a guide for solo journaling, but it really does change depending on the game and the player. That said, I think it would be a good thing to write a book on to explore the different ways to think about it/approach it/come up with a way that works for each person. Sometimes for example the way I journal to avoid performative journaling is to record it as if I'm a reporter watching my PC.

Recently, I've been playing with the Gamemasters Apprentice cards and the solo rpg ALONe that the cards designer created for the cards. I originally got them to use as a GM, but found It's a really great option for those that find rolling on all the tables too time consuming. The cards have all the tables and then some that you would get in say mythic. Coming up with random events and using the oracle are so fast! I like how freeform the ALONe rules are too. Its great for when you just wanna get in there and play and dont have the time for set up.

After watching your videos, I rolled up a character in Dragonbane and ventured off to the abandoned chapel to meet with Ingolfr. Dragonbane does solo really well. The tools they provided with the box were really a pleasant surprise, because they provide an excellent framework for generative roleplaying and emergent narrative. Also, the art is rad AF.
Anyway, thank you for making these. I really was inspired to make it happen. I have to ask: is Colostle as fantastic as it is aesthetically pleasing?

    • @amanisalone
      @amanisalone  2 месяца назад

This is awesome to hear - the tools are so simple but they are actually *exactly* what is needed to just get in there and start doing it. If I were to say a downside to Starforged it's that for some people it just seems a bit too "big" to start playing. I would say colostle is a cool game with a well-thought out world, if you're someone who digs mechanics it's a bit mechanics lite. But if your focus is on the story and immersion, and you like the world created by nich angell, then you're going to love it. Try to get the roomlands supplement, it really fills in a lot of the missing pieces from the core game.

    Hello Man Alone-
Intro was great - middle information exceptional!!! - outro Meh???
I'm one of the newbies here just getting into Solo RPG - but not a newbie for playing RPG's.
The Solo RPG that I'm looking for is the Solo RPG for purchased adventures.
Sure you can play a Solo RPG and make up everything, but the thing I'm going up against that no one seems to know how to answer is the playing of those purchased adventures.
Like in D&D B2 Keep on the Borderlands - how do you solo and adventure with the cleric, when you know that the cleric is going to turn on you later.
Like in any adventure - how do you solo when this or that is going to happen and you have to play around it.
I have done a lot of reading up on this, so maybe just jump in and do something - it could end up being a lot different than what I expected.
Or if no one seems to know, then maybe I should just make up what works for me.
Sorry to disagree with your amazing Spirited Away, but I gave Spirited Away 5 Z's ZZZZZ
I think the 5 Z's were mostly based on the fact that I didn't know the world and I'm not really into animes.
I look forward to your other videos - hopefully some of them can shed some more light so I can see where to go better.
    Cheers

I kept glossing over Holy Water Sprinkler because Holy Water Sprinkler. It does nice damage and is good against undead but, again, HWS. I was doing some research and looked up what it could be and I was stunned. It was a type of morning star flail that was used by priests and had a heavy war use version. That was my go to weapon every game after that and I eventually was able to crush the scenarios, literally. It seems silly, but give it a try! You'd be surprised!

This far I feel like I'm mostly reading numbers in a Swedish accent, but I guess I have to start somewhere. Any feedback would be appreciated (yes, even if you hate my videos) :)

Not only was wierd to use an apple pensil to aid the hand but use the bucket as a weapon... And i must say... I love it.
Next character will be the janitor that uses a broom and a bucket as weapon.
I love gonzo silly stuff on my solos.
Btw... Grave of the Fireflies... What did you score it? That was realy an awesome not easy to watch, fkd up, rage inducing, fkng sad, 2rb#%%#! , movie.

What is my goal on solo ttrpg?
-put my self in the mind of diferent person that is not my. Thinking what that character with that personality does in the play. I most of the time randomly create characters and allways randomly pick his personalities.
What block me most of the times?
-Fights. Creating a group of adversaries is what i find most complicated for me.
What kind of enemie? Is them to strong? What abilities? Should they be in this place? What there loot? Etc etc etc.
And thats why i found Ironsworn my thing as it is challange based.
Solo ttrpg is something that takes time to find the right way for us to play.
Some People say "Stay out of tecnology", others "Noooo, for solo easy press of a button on a VTT is what make solo possível and fun" and for other like me "Ipad with apple pensil for note taking, Android tablet for rule books, and Phone for dice Roll and cards" is the thing.

@@IAcePTI this is so important to identify what the places of joy are in play so that you can chase those. Not knowing what you enjoy or denying what you enjoy in favor for what someone else enjoys is a huge reason that it doesn't work out.
