"It's Perfect, I Hate It": The Fate Core System, The Pursuit Of Fidelity, and The Uncanny Valley
Today, we’re diving into the Fate Core System-a game often hailed as the ultimate system for streamlined, narrative-driven play. But is perfection always a good thing? While some laud Fate’s thoroughness and flexibility, others find it strangely…too? polished? Is there such a thing as a system being *too* good? Surely it is better for a game to be too good than to suck, right?

I think Tricube Tales does FATE better than FATE
58:52
I must say I love Fate, and I find that I agree with some of the things you said. What you need to remember is that Core is the generic Fate version, so it had to had generic skills. You might have more luck in checking the several worlds for it and how they tweak the system. Or the System Toolkit book to check how it can be done. I agree that the imagery of the book has not aged well at all. You might also want to check the latest version, Fate Condensed Edition. My best recommendation would be checking actual play, when you see aspect invocations and aspect compels at work. Offering a Fate Point teasing it while describing the consequences of accepting it is great.
Narrative games are alien to me. Narrative is supposed to emerge from the act of playing. As far as the Uncanny Valley, I know why dolls are creepy to many. But what affects me the most is in many horror movies, they'll take a humanoid form but have it walk like its joints are different or it has more joints than it should. That gets me every time.
Very interesting review of FATE Core
Now that you say it, I always remember people calling the dice FUDGE dice but I dunno why really
Liked the conversation about perfection and the Uncanny Valley (very insightful)
@@juauke Because before Fate, there was a game called Fudge that used those dice. Fate is a reconstruction and formalization of Fudge that went beyond the original.
First time I've actually bothered to read the video description, just because I inhale all information I can get my hands on about Fate at the moment 😂 Haven't seen the video yet, that is the next step :p
I have run, played and enjoyed FATE Core, but there's something soulless about it. I keep trying every few months. I like the FATE deck.
I actually visited a restaurant like that a few years ago. They had actual food and it was perfectly, and I am not exaggerating, it was perfectly cooked everything was exactly as it should be. But it had no soul at all.
Love Cartograph. I don’t always follow the rules but mostly.
For me, FATE was perfected before it even existed, in the time of its predecessor, Fudge. The special dice, and the named scaling successes (personalised), were, and remain, all that I have ever needed from the “system”-heck, they’re basically all I really need to GM anything, ever. Aspects? Miss me with allat.

I’m commenting on this older video because I want to see my waffle icon change color faster! Also, I liked the grandma photo on the thumbnail. Also, I’ve been playing rpgs since the late 70’s (in grad school in Berkeley) and want to see if your categories match mine. I’m excited to see it! If I think of something more to say, I’ll say it. Edited to add, after watching this video: yep, I think you nailed it, plus gave a couple of more categories I hadn’t thought of. 💪
A lot of good soloing information. Thank you.
Yeah I'm a recovering alcoholic and can relate. Though, I needed booze to relate and as an excuse to indulge more. Sober for over 4 years now though. Great video ass always. o/
Yeah I find that the best way is talking through things, but I can't do that unless I'm recording it as I feel weird, I've never been good at just journaling because I always think that I may as well just do more work on writing a novel instead. Great video.
I love to journal and even spent much of my life writing, sometimes professionally. I have stacks of my journals over decades. But I completely despise journaling my solo rpgs. It’s no fun and just feels like onerous work. So, I quit playing solo for a while. I still keep a journal of my life though. 😵💫 Maybe I’ll get some ideas to try here, thanks. 🙂
Hey Man Alone! Have you seen Chris McDowell's skirmish game? It's mini agnostic, rules light, and I think he is designing it with small tables in mind.
Yeah this is so crazy, that you are the second person to mention this and I had no idea that Chris McDowell was even working on this game. I'm like stunned that it went under my radar, but I am absolutely going to be all over it. I think it's called Doomed?
Fascinating, thoughtful, and nuanced discussion. As a 68-year-old who likes Berholt Brecht and would love to see one of his plays performed (and am thus obviously raised in different world from you and many of your viewers) I very much enjoyed hearing your point of view. (Yet, this is definitely not what I expected from a gaming video!) 😉
You have landed in the right place, Arielle. I so very rarely talk about games. Far more often my videos are talking about talking about TALKING about games lol. Welcome!
Heya I had a question I was wondering about. I really like the idea of soloing and you have really helped me break myself out of molds or things I feel are hard locked but one thing I still struggle with is separating games. I come across a concept I really enjoy but I end up wanting to homebrew it into a Frankenstein monster. Some concepts are easy enough to take some things from and keep other things from another, but right now I'm struggling with stat conversions, for example. Like going from Sword Weirdos on a table to Knave 2E. For example.
I think on one hand, it would be easy for me to say that you can take any game and apply it to any system or setting that you'd like. And to some extent, that is true. However, there are limitations that might inhibit you from having the full depth of experience that you could have if you were playing a system that was intentionally made to have agreement between the setting and the mechanics. Yes, there are games that don't do a good job of this and are still pretty good, but I think the best games are games that the form follows function and the mechanics of the game reflect what type of game it is and even more so what the ''idea" of the game is.. For instance, and this is just me thinking off the top of my head, but if I were to make a game about Frankenstein, I would consider what themes are relevant to that story. Obviously Mary Shelley wanted to convey the conflict between the old world and the new, or nature and technology, etc. But even something more surface level would be pretty powerful, such as gameplay mechanics that reflected many separate things coming together and then forming a new cohesive whole. I have more to say about this, but I think it'll probably be in a future video… Long story short, there are some systems that are better at adapting new settings and gameplay styles and genres, while there are others that are not as adaptable. Anything too specific is going to be hard to convert into exactly what you are trying to make it, while other systems are going to have their arms open and ready.
epic intro
Great video, not just for new players but for experienced procrastinators. Anyone have a good suggestion for places to follow up on the advice to share your experiences? My solo play has always been personal but I like the idea of blogging or sharing it somehow, even if no one wants to read it.
I liked earlier RHCP… Then they started releasing trash, like Stadium Arcadium.. and won a Grammy for it. And got more popular. I don’t think I’ve listened to them since.
You were right about Lance. In 6th edition, it becomes Charge. I had no idea about the limitation of horsemanship capping other combat skills!
I didn't know if I wanted sleepy hollow, not much into it, but that solo supplement is golden.
Where did you get your grid board map from?
Oh man, this is an old video I forgot about that thing… I actually think it was a Pathfinder brand combat grid. It had two sides, one was light and one was dark
My mom's lasagna was fuckin terrible
Did you not put enough wood in it? My mom would put a whole chair worth of wood into every layer
In my case, the difficulty was in that I was under the impression that I have to or that I should roleplay out dialogs etc. But then I was like "why?" and just don't :D . I just write out a sentance or two of what happenes after a roll or before like #1: this the intent then #2: roll and then #3: i write a sentance or two what the result means. All that acting and roleplay may be what some people like but on youtube it is done so that people have a show :D . Of course some people like to do it that way, but I thought I'd write my style and preference.
Absolutely, whenever I start to have that feeling of like why am I doing this, I do the Marie Kondo test of"Does this spark joy?" If I don't enjoy it, and it is not necessary for me to do it for the mechanics of play, I just try to boil it down to its most essential part and move on. So for instance, your strategy of just writing a sentence or two, is exactly what I would do in that situation
I’ve been running a game on Alchemy for about a year. Before that I used Roll 20. Overall I like Alchemy but it is frustrating that it doesn’t yet have certain tools that have been standard for a long time on Roll 20 and Fantasy Grounds. Alchemy’s fog of war tool is pretty primitive and I’ve found it to be a little buggy. It would also be nice to be able to draw on maps to show areas of effect, but Alchemy doesn’t have that. Also, maybe this is just my laptop, but in about half my sessions I find the whole platform to be a little laggy. (But my device is only a couple of years old.) What I do love about Alchemy, though, is the immersive effects of story mode, and the very attractive aesthetic and format of notes and handouts.
I really loved alchemy and was a paying subscriber for sometime, but eventually there was this super clarifying moment where I was hosting a session as a GM for my players and we eventually were able to start like an hour and 10 minutes after we were supposed to all because some extremely simple toggle switch or option or something that should have just been really really easy to find Took me like an hour to figure out. I swear, I don't know what it is but it just feels so intuitive sometimes and other times it feels like the most unintuitive weirdest thing. As for your final point, laggy is an understatement in a few cases of mine where alchemy slowed my Machine down to such a grind that it like had to be restarted or I couldn't do anything else. And I have a pretty good computer, it was just unbelievable System drain, and not much of that drain was directed toward actual game mechanics. Then again, and this is what kept bringing me back like a person stuck in a bad relationship… but the backgrounds are so beautiful and the music is awesome and man it just is so cool looking… but at what price?
@ So what platform do you use now? I’ve been sticking with Alchemy so far. I could go back to Roll 20 but I don’t know. Another issue I have is, Alchemy’s built in voice and video, although sometimes buggy, is much better than Roll 20’s when it works. For some reason my players get cranky whenever I float the idea of using Discord. They don’t want to learn a new thing.

Ok, I'm convinced, this is awesome. Rolling the crit on the bravery check near the end was peak solo rp (imo).
You have a brain and ears for now, but Wait till I tell you about the new upgraded brain ears that they have available. I know what you're thinking -an entirely new set of brain and ears is going to cost me way too much, but you're wrong. It's not gonna cost you much at all, you just can't see that because your current eyes are bad and you can't understand it because your brain is bad and you need a new brain
Even if one wasn’t interested in throwing old onions at the wall or searching for witch’s moles…there’s still a lot to learn from this video. Seriously, I always find that with MaLone’s videos, it unlocks things in my brain that help with completely unrelated topics. Not sure why yet, but I’ll take it!
My strategy is to make my videos contain Half the time dedicated to very interesting topics, and the other half of the time to be boring prattling drivel, so that the viewer can both be inspired and then have long periods of time where they zone out out of boredom so that they can process their newfound inspiration
@@amanisalone well, they do say balance in all things is important 😄
As someone coming into this fresh, I’m excited for CTGD. I totally get how a fan of the first edition would be disappointed. They maybe shouldn’t have explicitly made it a sequel to CTTH.
Video 93 of me liking and then commenting on every new upload to tell the viewers that the Man Alone Podcast is absolutely some of that sweet, unhinged audio/vocal-honey. Psssst. Anybody into protein bars? I love protein bars. On the hunt for the best one. So far, Fit Crunch has my vote. Keep the sugars extremely low, the protein high and calories close to 200-300.
I think that we have to give up on protein bars… I know there are some brands that do it better than others, but almost every protein bars main weakness when it comes to taste is… Protein. It is that inescapable Dusty husk smell and flavor that blooms up in the back of your throat as you slug down the dry cubes of chemicals that are only technically food. That said, I think builders are pretty good
@amanisalone says the dude that drinks battery acid. I mean Red Bull. That said, I think SF RB is pretty good.
Oh yeah, cool dice too btw. The beige n burgundy ones do have a nice look. I try not to buy lots of extraneous dice that im not ever really going to play with, buying them just because they are cool looking, but i would get some of those dice probably as i dont have too many that are just for beauty and art design uniqueness, i usually buy ones that are practical and have easy to read color combinations.
Absolutely, and weirdly enough the thing that makes the burgundy ones more readable is that they do not have that gold leaf embossment that the other two have. The contrast of colors makes it so that I would have to lean over to look at them every single time. I guess it just goes to show you the eternal rule that less is more
Ya bring up memories of the other traumatic frightening "holiday special" animated "childrens" shows of my youth. Riki Tiki Tavi, Watership Down. Heck even the early Rankin/Bass "The Hobbit" animated movie from 1977 had quite a lot of scary imagery the way the art designers did it. The mountain goblins with their huge mouths and teeth...Smaug in that one was kinda scary for a little kid. To me though it seemed all to fit in a fantasy story in that world. My uncle had the hardcover book version of that animated Hobbit movie and I used to read that all the time when i was at my grandmas. He collected comics and vintage horror movie stuff also. Anyway, yeah i recall those british animated story movies back then all were unique, but also had a lot of really frightening scenes at times which later on i thought was kinda odd choices for always showing around Christmas. Lol But even the Wind In The Willows story was pretty damn dark and sad when ya thought the poor mr.mole or otter ir whoever vanished and ya thought he drowned or died in some way. To me that was always more stress or sorrow inducing than cheery and carefree as the holidays were supposed to be intended.
I honestly think it was good that I was scared. I'm serious, I think it was good for my development and ability to manage my emotions and to self soothe. I am sometimes afraid that the extra sanitize world we live in has come to certain conclusions about what is OK for kids to experience and what is too scary for them, like I said my own nephew is scared of almost everything, even parts of movies that aren't intended to be scary they are just weird and it's because his mom Guard him from watching anything that raises his pulse even one tick. But, on the other hand, he is so jumpy and nervous and on edge all the time, and I think it's because being scared in little doses when you're growing up helps you to learn how to calm yourself down better and -possibly more importantly -shows you that most of the time when you're scared, it's gonna be OK i.e. you'll survive
When you said "abacus" I, a person with a math degree who already has an abacus app on my phone because I think it's a wonderfully fun way of approaching numbers, said "hELL YEAH!" involuntarily ...So uh, yeah, I'm *that* kind of player, I guess, lol Excuse me while I unironically ponder ways I can integrate an abacus into my gaming...
@@vulcanus7127 you can use the abacus to count the ways that you can integrate the abacus!

If you're really looking for a great solo skirmish game that will play in a 2'x2' area (or slightly smaller), pick up The Doomed. Very melee heavy and not reliant on needing bigger space for long-range weapons. Your WH40K minis will work great with the theme as well.
@@the_Mike_d well am I understanding this right that the dude who makes this game is the same guy who made into the odd? Because if so that’s incredible.
@@amanisalone Yes - absolutely. I'm not sure if many people would pick up on it, but the game world for The Doom definitely feels like it might be Into the Odd-adjacent. In addition, the sculptor the used for the book art (Ana Polanšcak) is really unique. Above and beyond the theme, the rules for The Doomed are a refreshing change for skirmish gaming. Give it the old ManAlone try and see what you think!
Another good one is Deth Wizards. It can also be played solo and it's 22"x30"
@@Brutile94 Oh yeah - great use of miniatures most people likely already have. I don't think the theme is especially unique but in terms of a smaller footprint game it definitely fits.
Slice of pie? Apple would be up there with Pumpkin for me.
I'll be damned, you did it… You got to the secret question. But every question worth its weight and salt is always followed up by an even harder question, and so here is mine: are you good with the conventional apple pie, or do you go for the Dutch apple pie version i.e. the one with little crumbles on top? You have 600 days to respond or else the velveteen rabbit here gets it!
Hope your surgery recovery is going well!
I hate the glossy paper too (Pirate Borg and Frontier Scum are my favorite Borg books because of the fact that Borgs usually use glossy paper)
That GM Screen 😮😮😮
Thank you for the well wishes my bro it is one step at a time. Also, this is now my preferred method of receiving multiple comments, all in one thread for my reading enjoyment. I love it and thank you and down with glossy paper. If you're interested, we should start an organization called CAG PIE i.e. coalition against glossy paper (Idaho - Europe chapter)
@@amanisalone you're welcome! You're a great help especially in these times I can't play much! Hehe, I'm glad that I'm using this way then 😁 Boo to glossy paper! (I somehow prefer ICRPG non glossy books, Shadowdark and Crown and Skull [incredible paper in this one!] to the ICRPG Collector Edition because of that!) I'm down for starting CAG PIE with you!
