  • Playing a tabletop roleplaying game by yourself without a Game Master is a growing development of the TTRPG hobby. How do we do it? It's easier than you might think, especially if you have the right tools to help you ask the right questions. This process can work for any game system, such as Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder.

And they worked for almost any genre game I wanted to play out. And hey, it entertained me for YEARS. Lots of great stories and quests. I am shocked that its only now this has become a thing.

    This is a bit of an older video now, so I'm not sure if you still read the comments, but I really appreciate you making this! I've been really wanting to play DnD for awhile now but so far my experience with tabletop roleplaying games (specifically Warhammer) hasn't been... great. So discovering that it is actually possible to play solo has been exciting. Finding info on how to do it properly without being told to "just write a book" or other various snarky comments has been really difficult, though.
    Finding strangers on the Internet to play with doesn't appeal to me right now, and the idea that I want to try to play out probably wouldn't interest many people since it would be one race specific gameplay for quite awhile. So having a video like this to reference is going to be so incredibly helpful as I muddle my way through figuring out how to play solo AND play DnD for the first time lol

    I think a standard deck of cards would make for a good world and story creator. You lay them out randomly face down to generate your map, and each suit and value can represent different things which are discovered as you enter the area and turn over the card. And then you might also have smaller scale maps within each location where the remaining cards are reshuffled each time and the suits and values have completely different meanings to determine what happens.

    • @ALoonwolf
      @ALoonwolf Год назад +5

      In fact it practically creates itself... Clubs are for combat. Hearts are for healing, rest, recovery and bonuses. Diamonds are treasure - equipment, money and shops. And Spades dig up empty land, and may turn up some random thing or else nothing at all. Within the smaller scale maps for example the King of Clubs would be a "boss fight". You could alter the difficulty by the ratio of Clubs to Hearts (combat vs healing and bonuses).

    I stopped gaming several years ago, partly because my group all started to have other commitments, but any hopes of playing again were dashed when I moved to a new city. I really missed it.
    When I learned that solo gaming was a thing (I forget how I heard about it) I was *thrilled*.but also disappointed that I hadn't learned about it 10 years earlier.
    I love the idea of it. I have Ironsworn and I backed the Starforged Kickstarter. I have the Game Master's Apprentice deck and both the Mythic GME book and deck. All of these tools are great and I love the idea of playing... but I have a hard time with it.
    As a writer and the GM of my old group for many years, I feel weird playing by myself. I always feel that I should be sharing the story with someone, so it feels-- for lack of a better way of saying it-- like a waste of time. I have managed to play about 4 sessions of Ironsworn, writing it out as if I was writing a novel, but that makes it very slow. And then I find myself asking "who am I writing this FOR?"
    But I keep wanting to play. Hopefully, it will click one day.
    In terms of visualization, I always played TotM with my group but thought that miniatures might help with playing solo. They're just so expensive...
    I picked up Dungeon Craft, but then found it inconvenient to have to build the map because I didn't always have much time or space. I then tried some VTTs, but none were as quick and simple as I wanted, though Runehammer VTT and Owlbear Rodeo come close. What I finally settled on (and really love) is TaleSpire. It has that cool look of classic miniatures but is quick and easy to use. You don't even need to make your own maps (though you can) because there is so much content that has been made by the community.
    Wow, I am really rambling.
    All this to say that this is a great vid and hopefully it'll give me a bit of a push so that I can overcome my mental blocks and start playing.

      As mentioned in my original content, I did try writing out what I was doing with the hopes of sharing, but I had a hard time writing in note form and always defaulted to "novel mode" in which I detailed everything and slowed my game down almost to a halt.
      But I may try writing things up again because I think that will be key in helping me actually play.

    I started to integrate ChatGPT into my solo sessions. It doesn't replace any tables or dice but it is very good to fill some of the void and create atmosphere. For example I get into a tomb and roll some characteristics about the tomb from tables and feed them into chatgpt. Then I ask chatgpt to describe the first room in detail and it does as it is told. Or I ask the ai to combine things. "I got quest a and location b. Now, what could they possible have in common?" It is also excellent for journal keeping. I tell the ai what I do while playing and in the end I ask for a summary. Saves me a lot of work.

    Readouts and digital displays pulse eerily with the technologies of the distant future.
    INTERIOR - BRIDGE
    CAMERA ANGLES GRADUALLY WIDEN
    SHOWING ALL 6 MEMEBERS OF THE CREW WORKING ON THE BRIDGE.
    Gm: Your ship on route to Novgorod Station "blah blah explain the scene"..
    What you wanna do?
    Pc: I would like to scan around the station to have more information and make sure the place is safe..

    The war ended with a bang in a village near the front, an explosion that wiped out half a mile of village, farm, and forest, ripping a portal in time and space at its epicenter. Horrified to learn that their enemy had such a weapon, the kingdom surrendered unconditionally, bringing an end to the war almost before it began. A group of mages were sent to investigate the portal, and on the other side they found a pristine, unexplored land, with the ruins of great civilizations that had died out long ago, leaving the places to be overrun by monsters. Despite the dangers, many people answered the call to populate this new land, lured by the promise of adventure and land rights, including the former nobles of the kingdom who'd had their lands ceased, mercenary companies seeking to set up their own kingdoms, and criminals hiding from the law.
    Kayden, a young artificer, has his own reasons for venturing through the portal, and joins the company of his former enemies: his former jailor, a priestess, a deposed noble, and others. His goal? To create and market self-cleaning chamber pots, wands of cleaning, and cloth of mending. And to never, ever, create another bomb.
    Garret, a veteran soldier, had known all his life that he would live and die in the service of his cousin, the duke, but when the duke died while Garret still lived, it forced the man to change priorities. Now he will life and die for his great-niece, the last of the royal house Garret had previously served, and because she wants to venture through the portal, he will, too.

No longer a noble, unable to pay the tuition, Yvette left and joined her great-uncle. After praying for guidance, she learned about the lands beyond the portal and took that as divine providence.
    Lord Esteros insists that his title is still true despite having been dispossessed of everything but the clothes on his back and the sword at his side. @@TheWoodlandFellowship It started out as an idea for a combined campaign for the local gaming store, but then Covid hit. Since then, I've been looking at solo campaigns and hex crawls. Mostly, what I'm thinking is a short story to establish the world and characters of interest in the villages surrounding the crater lake around the arrival portal, collectively known as Gateway. The mageocracy intends to build a vast city, but it's still early days, and right now they're building wood forts around the bridges leading to the portal, and most of the people are camped outside.
      Skeletons have been spotted in the foothills, there's a foul stench coming from the old mines, and blights attack anything that wanders too close to the forest. That's 3 starting quests, dwarf, human, and elf, and 3 factions, mages, miners, and loggers. I've already got a name for the woods, The Song Woods, and a bad guy, a tree blight. The mine is full of troglodytes. And the skeletons are coming from dwarven ruins, a cemetery where the dwarves buried their dead during a war against necromancers - skeletons wander about during the day and spirits during the night.

    Its always interesting to hear how others go about solo roleplaying. I am however surprised at how man times you said "then you HAVE to" all that world building stuff that took up a lot of the video doesn’t have to be done at all, it can all be rolled for as you go to create the world around the story.
    Im also curious if you purposefully didnt mention any of the great systems and resources specifically made for solo play?

    • @TheWoodlandFellowship
      @TheWoodlandFellowship  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the comment! To clarify, I have a very free and open-minded philosophy when it comes to RPGs. There are a wide variety of styles of play, approaches to world building, and priorities within the steps completed in a game (which is also true for other creative enterprises). All of those options are valid, even more so in solo games. So, if you don't want to do *any* world building or character background stuff ahead of time, that is totally acceptable. Go for it. Theoretically, someone who is maximally creative could do very little prep and still have a good time exploring and discovering those things during play. Awesome!
      However for myself, I find it helpful to have some simple concepts on a macro scale to inform and inspire my decisions and interpretations in the micro. Thus, I made my recommendations accordingly.
      Ultimately, my focus in this video was not to showcase specific products for use in solo play, but rather to present a mindset/philosophy for solo play. A separate video or two covering some of my favorite tools may certainly come in the future.

      I'm not familiar with Harnmaster. Unless there are significant reasons to do one or the other because of the system, it's up to you. Either approach is fine. I tend to do a combination of the two: I populate several elements of the world to get started, but maybe only 25% of it at maximum so that I can have something to explore and discover while playing the game.

    While it's cool that there are ways to play TTRPG's solo and even systems designed for this, I think I'd rather just play a CRPG like Fallout, even if just to avoid having to deal with all the trouble of comming up with a main conflict on my own for my character to solve. In this case, all I have to do is create a character build, I don't even really need to come up with a backstory.

      @TheWoodlandFellowship  2 года назад +1

      I talked about it briefly, so I understand the confusion. There are many tools online for that, as well as random charts to roll on to get ideas/discover the quests. For example, you can find a generic fantasy quest generator here: donjon.bin.sh/fantasy/random/
      Use that in conjunction with other types of generators (plot twist, location, NPC, etc.), and you can let the dice/online tool tell you where to go next or what problems exist that need to be solved. I hope that helps! :)

    What kind of solo supplement you can recommend for exploration of the world for any genre ttrpg?

    • @TheWoodlandFellowship
      @TheWoodlandFellowship  Год назад +1

      I highly recommend using websites like Don Jon to get started. (donjon.bin.sh/) It is difficult to find a single supplement to cover any possible genre, as they will likely not be specific enough to be helpful. Instead, make your own (which is what I do), or mix and match various other references together, whether found in the Dungeon Masters Guide for D&D 5e, Ironsworn, or a whole host of different games altogether. I don't know which genre you are most interested in, but the maker of Ironsworn has a Sci-Fi version called Ironsworn Starforged. I haven't tried that particular version, but I trust that it is as great a product as Ironsworn is, if you want something that isn't relying on a generic fantasy or historical setting. I hope that helps! :)

    I am new to dnd and I want what you mean when you said you game system.... what is a game system?

    • @TheWoodlandFellowship
      @TheWoodlandFellowship  11 месяцев назад +1

      A game system is the set of rules that governs how to create and improve a character, what determines success or failures, and which special abilities are able to be performed. Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is the most widely known, but there are LOTS of other games out there. Pathfinder, Call of Cthulu, Ironsworn, Warhammer Fantasy, Blades in the Dark, the One Ring, Vampire the Masquerade... All of these have different settings and use different kinds of dice in their games. (There are also dice-less RPGs out there, too!) Some game systems are more complex and require significant attention to positioning and tactics (kinda like chess), while others are more free flowing and rely heavily on improvization and creativity (kinda like Charades.)
      Another way to look at it: the various Tabletop Roleplaying games are as similar and different to each other as Skyrim, Elden Ring, Dragon's Dogma, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, etc are. Different styles of play, different goals, different settings, different character statistics, different magnitudes and means of changing/improving character abilities... each follows a particular system of rules. TTRPGs work the same way.

    Goes to a lot of trouble for something that is as simple as a one-page Oracle sheet and a 1d6. Don't need all the worldbuilding prep. Does anyone ever know everything about the world? Most don't carry an exact map of every place they explore. Just write up a scenario, consult the Oracle, interpret, and as things come up, use the rules of the system to resolve actions. It can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.

    • @TheWoodlandFellowship
      @TheWoodlandFellowship  5 месяцев назад

      I agree to a point. Although, the title of the video makes it clear that its intended audience is for beginners to Solo RP. Experienced solo-gamers can certainly do more with less, but they may not need to watch this video in the first place. In my experience, I find this amount of world-building helpful in identifying possible conflicts that may arise, as well as get a sense of the potential directions the dice may take me, without needing an overwhelming amount of details. It is just enough for me to get the big picture and guide my interpretations of the oracles. If a single page of oracles and a d6 is all that you need, that's awesome! I hope you are able to enjoy many solo adventures that way.

      @@torq21 After 7 months I've played more Ironsworn and can say for certain that it is my favorite system. But I did play a traditional group system solo with oracles. I play Cairn paired with One Page Solo Engine and I gotta say that it's fun. I'm currently running a dungeon crawler solo campaign with a 3-member party and it's surprisingly manageable. Well, Cairn is rule-lite afterall. I can't imagine playing dnd5e solo tho.
      I agree that Ironsworn is the best entry level solo system with the price of free PDF, the built in tables and oracle is fun to utilize. But I'll go further and say that Ironsworn: Starforged is an even better system with a lot of improvement from the normal one. I've also heard good things about Dragonbane with it's solo rules, planning to get that soon. But, yeah, back to the point, vanilla Ironsworn is the best entry point.
