I also think this is a great way to learn a new TTRPG system by playing some scenarios by yourself before presenting the system to your group as a DM.
Imagine someone wants to play a RPG and has no gaming experience AT ALL. Rather than sitting and telling what a person requires, you need to show all the materials. That includes actual construction, the process, development, all the parts and how they’re utilized.
I have watched a few videos on solo RP, but this tutorial should have been the first step. great guide
I'm excited by this
Thanks for doing this!! I have never done TTRPGs before and this makes me want to try Ironsworn
Oh wow, that is the best explanation I've seen yet! You make it so very clear regardless of game being played. This is just what I needed!
thanks! i was so lost and now i feel prepared to start my solo campaign!
How to set tone to die rolls. 3 fate die. You add or subtract die based on ability mod.
I solo because no one I know of plays anymore, I find it cathartic really. My imagination really fires on my own these days, the characters I make and use I feel I know them personally and it’s really a kick to guide them in their lives. Usually I’m a god, and I’ve performed miracles now and again and have “met” a few characters in world etc. one thing is, you can’t god mode them…I’d hate to see them die but free will is a must for it to be “real”.
Not role playing so much as a writing exercise.
Oh no. I can feel the disappointment in your voice 😨. I did not see that ending coming. The dice are the true story tellers. I commend you for sticking to what the dice said. Great video, friend! Hope there is more to come.
@RollingSoloRPG thanks! Yeah, that last roll at the end really threw a wrench into the whole story for me. I didn't realize I was playing a tragedy. :(
@@TheWoodlandFellowship 😆 for real! Do you plan on starting a new campaign?
@@RollingSoloRPG I've gone back and forth on it. The RUclips algorithm gets confused by channels that mix styles of videos, as the audiences don't always overlap. I haven't ruled it out, though.
What software do you use for your background sounds? I've been looking for some copyright free sounds and music for my future videos.
I use sounds and music from the RUclips Studio library. Using anything else is more likely to get flagged for Copyright infringement, even if you have permission.
@@TheWoodlandFellowship right on. Thanks bud! 😀
Not gonna lie, your sound effect you made for the whisper as the roots were trying to grab them was legit! I thought it was a sound sample at first. 😂
I miss your videos, friend! Hope you come out with more soon.
You are so kind! I've been working very hard on several side projects, (and one in particular that is almost ready for a public announcement), but I do have the script done for the next video! Thank you so much for your encouragement! 😀
@@TheWoodlandFellowship Nice! Good to hear. I'll be waiting lol.
I finished my game system!! I'm super excited and came to.rje conclusion to name it THE MYTHOS FORGE SYSTEM CODEX.🤩🤩🤩
amazing video, thank you!
Very good video and very good points you have there.. what I want to try is play this system in Glorantha world. Take example little area of glorantha and at least use some glorantha region take animals and monster that is living that area in gloranta. Not sure is this even possible but just a thought..
This is super helpful guide thanks! This should be a standard methodology for anyone looking to start out doing solo RPG. Fleshing out the NPCs, factions, and conflicts really helps. Also always looking for potential OBSTACLES keeps the story moving forward. Subcribed!
Thank you very much for this! I have had the Free League's Alien RPG for years and found nobody to play with. Going to try to run this solo
I was a contributor to Ironsworn Delve, and strongly recommend that you use it in conjunction with the original Ironsworn. It adds a lot to the game.
Wholeheartedly agree!
You could use The Crying Blades as your system as well.
Oooooh. I have never heard of that one yet. Tell us more!
While it's cool that there are ways to play TTRPG's solo and even systems designed for this, I think I'd rather just play a CRPG like Fallout, even if just to avoid having to deal with all the trouble of comming up with a main conflict on my own for my character to solve. In this case, all I have to do is create a character build, I don't even really need to come up with a backstory.
What I added into my campaign is 3 oracles, one for randomised waypoints, one for random encounters and one for Divine Guidance... I play a tale of the last people in Ironlands who believe in a God, so lack of interaction with said God mechanically made no sense in the story... I also decided that "Varou" in my world will not just be werewolves, but instead generally the animal folk, which includes cat people, bird people and wolf people... I just need better names for the three... I might also add an oracle for getting ill, to allow something more flavorful to happen when you drop to 0 health outside of combat and assets about guns would help me with adding dwarfs I believe... Thank you for that idea!
This is a bit of an older video now, so I'm not sure if you still read the comments, but I really appreciate you making this! I've been really wanting to play DnD for awhile now but so far my experience with tabletop roleplaying games (specifically Warhammer) hasn't been... great. So discovering that it is actually possible to play solo has been exciting. Finding info on how to do it properly without being told to "just write a book" or other various snarky comments has been really difficult, though. Finding strangers on the Internet to play with doesn't appeal to me right now, and the idea that I want to try to play out probably wouldn't interest many people since it would be one race specific gameplay for quite awhile. So having a video like this to reference is going to be so incredibly helpful as I muddle my way through figuring out how to play solo AND play DnD for the first time lol
Totally helpful, totally sympathic. Thank you for the video. I'm a total beginner and am about to try a free starter adventure which one can find out there :) But your tips are gold. I'm definitely coming back :)
I am thinking of creating items that the PCs can have. Each item shall have a different ability modifying or adding to relevant stats and can be used in certain circumstances to mitigate poor die rolls. As such I have not designed any such item. But I am looking too. Please comment if this is suitable for Ironsworn as I am new to it. Also, I have made it a point to increase any one stat by 1 for every 10 experience points. This would represent my characters levelling up.
I think this is VERY doable. There is an alternate rule in the book that allows stat increases instead of unlocking a new ability or resource. Doing both may be worthwhile. The trickiest part will be confirming that the stat bonuses don't get so high as to eliminate the risk of failure. (I wouldn't let the total bonus exceed +5, as even the worst roll will compare to the average on the d10's.) Possible alternatives to play with may be able to upgrade certain rolls to a d8 instead, but again you may run into a math issue. Either way, try it and see what happens! :)
Tanglewood? More like strangle wood... nice
2 things. 1. I also have those Cthulhu Dice. 2. I keep trying to solo play only to find that I hate it and I'd rather be doing game prep lol
The key would be to make scenarios for other solo players so there’s still some mystery. Still working out how to do it!
From what I hear, most premade solo scenarios have functioned like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book.
What are your favorite books and other sources for printing tables? I try to avoid digital as much as possible
Its always interesting to hear how others go about solo roleplaying. I am however surprised at how man times you said "then you HAVE to" all that world building stuff that took up a lot of the video doesn’t have to be done at all, it can all be rolled for as you go to create the world around the story. Im also curious if you purposefully didnt mention any of the great systems and resources specifically made for solo play?
Thanks for the comment! To clarify, I have a very free and open-minded philosophy when it comes to RPGs. There are a wide variety of styles of play, approaches to world building, and priorities within the steps completed in a game (which is also true for other creative enterprises). All of those options are valid, even more so in solo games. So, if you don't want to do *any* world building or character background stuff ahead of time, that is totally acceptable. Go for it. Theoretically, someone who is maximally creative could do very little prep and still have a good time exploring and discovering those things during play. Awesome! However for myself, I find it helpful to have some simple concepts on a macro scale to inform and inspire my decisions and interpretations in the micro. Thus, I made my recommendations accordingly. Ultimately, my focus in this video was not to showcase specific products for use in solo play, but rather to present a mindset/philosophy for solo play. A separate video or two covering some of my favorite tools may certainly come in the future.
❤️ *PromoSM*
I started to integrate ChatGPT into my solo sessions. It doesn't replace any tables or dice but it is very good to fill some of the void and create atmosphere. For example I get into a tomb and roll some characteristics about the tomb from tables and feed them into chatgpt. Then I ask chatgpt to describe the first room in detail and it does as it is told. Or I ask the ai to combine things. "I got quest a and location b. Now, what could they possible have in common?" It is also excellent for journal keeping. I tell the ai what I do while playing and in the end I ask for a summary. Saves me a lot of work.
Good to see you’re still active, your videos are invaluable.
Thank you so much! I've had a series of health complications this year that has added many delays and gaps. (Nothing serious, just disruptive to filming quality videos without coughing and gross-ness.) But more is coming! I've been working on lots of other things in the mean time. I really appreciate your encouragement.
@@TheWoodlandFellowship I’m looking forward to them. I’m sorry about your disruptions, though, I hope you’re feeling okay now.
love the breakdown of subclasses, the allusion to literary tropes is both cool and helpful for understanding the broader idea of the class or subclasses and builds on the symbolism of each villain, which helps in the case of storytelling with the villain as a medium for worldbuilding as well as plot progression.
Thanks, man! Appreciate the feedback. :)
Hey, folks! In case you wanted a quick link to the Villain Generator instead of taking a screenshot, here's you go! drive.google.com/file/d/14sbPAbeiepBAknd2GslfYsISRNDVdv_H/view?usp=sharing
This is inspiring me to put together my own solo play campaign since my players are noncommittal altogether and are not gaming at all for at least over two years or more.
Goes to a lot of trouble for something that is as simple as a one-page Oracle sheet and a 1d6. Don't need all the worldbuilding prep. Does anyone ever know everything about the world? Most don't carry an exact map of every place they explore. Just write up a scenario, consult the Oracle, interpret, and as things come up, use the rules of the system to resolve actions. It can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.
I agree to a point. Although, the title of the video makes it clear that its intended audience is for beginners to Solo RP. Experienced solo-gamers can certainly do more with less, but they may not need to watch this video in the first place. In my experience, I find this amount of world-building helpful in identifying possible conflicts that may arise, as well as get a sense of the potential directions the dice may take me, without needing an overwhelming amount of details. It is just enough for me to get the big picture and guide my interpretations of the oracles. If a single page of oracles and a d6 is all that you need, that's awesome! I hope you are able to enjoy many solo adventures that way.
Thank you for going through the trouble of putting together this video. I found it very helpful.
I love this so much, thanks for this! I have a few friends who want to play (when we can find time) but i need to learn these game systems and practice beforehand!
Do you think guys like this in a scream band use that same voice to yell at their kids to take out the trash?
These may possibly be the best tips for solo RPG I've come across so far, at least when it comes to my own personal style
You could have your character's rival learn of their disappearance and investigate.
Dude, it's almost as bad playing a one on one game, and the dm never breaks eye contact. Jokes aside, solo table top is og and is very fun, good video!
Try solo roleplaying while facing a mirror, and tell me how it goes! Haha
Thanks for this video. It's one of the best I've watched for getting a solid overview of playing an RPG. Seriously, quite organized and well explained. Subscribed. Liked.
14:57 no one thought that old man made any sense, until you saw for yourself the dreaded Land Shark.
I am new to dnd and I want what you mean when you said you game system.... what is a game system?
A game system is the set of rules that governs how to create and improve a character, what determines success or failures, and which special abilities are able to be performed. Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is the most widely known, but there are LOTS of other games out there. Pathfinder, Call of Cthulu, Ironsworn, Warhammer Fantasy, Blades in the Dark, the One Ring, Vampire the Masquerade... All of these have different settings and use different kinds of dice in their games. (There are also dice-less RPGs out there, too!) Some game systems are more complex and require significant attention to positioning and tactics (kinda like chess), while others are more free flowing and rely heavily on improvization and creativity (kinda like Charades.) Another way to look at it: the various Tabletop Roleplaying games are as similar and different to each other as Skyrim, Elden Ring, Dragon's Dogma, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, etc are. Different styles of play, different goals, different settings, different character statistics, different magnitudes and means of changing/improving character abilities... each follows a particular system of rules. TTRPGs work the same way.
By game system, he mostly mean the rule set/books. You know, stuff like D&D, Pathfinder, Vampire the Masquerade, stuff like that.
And my Heroes and villains faction choices are Holy Theocratic, when I’m a Lawful Good paladin I like to kill demons and undead and protect the church from dark threats, when I’m Lawful Evil I like to kill heretics and heathens that refuse to convert to the holy true faith.
