I'm sorry Flora, but I'm so glad you were persistent in getting answers!! I feel like I know so many female athletes with health issues that take a long time to get diagnosed, probably partly due to females being less included in scientific trials. I also had heart palpitations and major fatigue November-December last year and finally got a blood test and thankfully it was just low iron which I could correct easily. Anyway, take care of yourself and I look forward to seeing updates! I also had mono after college and it totally took the doctor by surprise because I was still exercising, but then very fatigued in general 😋
Aww Flora, I’m so sorry but also pleased you have a diagnosis. I had a similar experience a few years ago and my only advice is to be incredibly kind to yourself. It’s easy to get frustrated when the body doesn’t cooperate. I tried to treat mine like a bank account. The more energy I could bank (by resting) the bigger my pay out would finally be. It payed off and I’m sure with your level head you’ll find a way that works for you. Wishing you all the very best. Xx
I am so sorry you contracted EBV. It has such frustrating and potentially destructive long term effects, especially for runners. I contracted EBV when I was 16 and it wasn’t picked up on for almost 10 years. The constant fatigue that I’ve been plagued with just wasn’t taken seriously and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome still isn’t accepted widely enough. I hate that if I push past the fatigue that I will be recovering for weeks and I have to monitor my fatigue levels daily. The main thing is to keep up your nutrition, hydration and sleep. Back off the physical activity when you start to feel a bit off. Keep yourself as mentally well as possible too. You know yourself well enough. I hope that you get on top of it really soon and I’m sending love and hugs your way ❤
So sorry you had to deal with that! Yes i think it's super common but absolutely not well treated by doctors. My partner has had CFS for 20 years now, so he understands the frustration. Thank you for sharing
Well done for persisting in getting a diagnosis and keep listening to your body, you're still young and you WILL recover. Be kind to yourself, that's something I've learned the hard way and I'm still learning, even now at my great age!! (I'm a 70 year old Ironman triathlete). Our instinct as long distance athletes is to keep pushing through the pain and fatigue but sometimes that's just not good. Stay positive, we're all here for you.
Congrats again Flora, great self analysis and indeed a stellar result given your 2023. Don't feel bad about pulling out of Tribe, absolutely the right thing to do - esp given the 225 distance and multi day stress, its one event at the end of the day re EBV. Better to skip one race than miss 5 or be out for a long time due to overstressing the body and then gettng really ill/doing damage, or getting injured due to making a mistake when fatigued and not being as alert. I'm sure having a diagnosis for your varied levels of fatigue will be of mental relief, which should help reduce your stress levels. Sometimes its the old (and frustrating when wanting to be active) slowly slowly catchy monkey expedites a better ending rather than chasing it! Good luck with your recovery and yea take it really easy, i had EBV - then Glandular Fever when 20 and carried on pushing myself training/eventing. It quickly caught up with me and put me on my arse for 3 months, literally, and a further 6 months to make a recovery of sorts, was 9-12 months after that before getting back on true pace. Definately time to listen to your body and get some easy dog walks in or even some fossil hunting down on that Dorset coast 😉!
Thank you for this! Yes that's the goal. It's horrible but if I'm sensible I hope it sorts itself out soon enough. Good to hear you've come out the other side! 🙏
Enjoying the race breakdown blogs. I had glandular fever at a similar age to you and you really do need to rest but the good news is that it does pass.
Thanks Flora, certainly not ideal yet great that you can continue to be active. Perhaps not the intensity or duration you crave and love, though it will give you the opportunity to be creative in what you do and the content you create for us, your loyal fans! All the best as you take on this chapter.
Great effort in the OCC and you’re doing right taking recovery seriously. All the best with your recovery. My mum had chronic fatigue in the 1980’s and it was dismissed by the medical profession at the time. Glad things have moved on a little bit at least.
thank you for sharing Flora, and I hope you have a speedy recovery (or as speedy as possible!). It is really helpful for you sharing these things so we can be aware. As you say, GPs don't really know about problems in runners. I've even had difficulty persuading the GP I had an iron deficiency (my husband had even more trouble - and he was really deficient.) thanks again and all the best - ps I was in Chamonix too my husband did the CCC - amazing run on the OCC - well done!
Thank you! Yes it can be infuriating with the GPs. I understand that they are run off their feet, but when you KNOW something is up its really upsetting to be sent away time and time again.
I'm in awe at your mindset and perseverance, and I'm sure you also have 'bad days' that we don't see. It's obviously been such a trying time, especially with having all these mystery symptoms and now finally having a diagnosis that really requires you to dial everything back. Wishing you an excellent recovery!!
Congratulations on finishing, such an incredible achievement!! I’m so sorry about your diagnosis, but I’m so pleased you finally have an answer! I had glandular fever when I was younger and it was so frustrating just not knowing! Hopefully you will recover as soon as you can 🤍
You said something that really resonated with me - that runners know our bodies & know when something is amuck. Frustrating when you don’t get a thorough diagnostic response to an intelligently articulated, ongoing issue.
Such a great vlog, so emotional and so refreshing to see the passion you have for your running journey. Such honesty which is very rare these days… Even with your positive diagnosis, you’re sharing, which is so helpful for others who may be struggling too! Keep sleeping well and look forward to all your running days to come 🩷
Good on you for your sensible advice on not being lead by the the training and the just get it done attitude often seen in RUclips running videos. I went to my doctor last year when every run seemed to wipe me out. I wasn't sick, just tired so I just let my body rest, walked and hiked till I felt ready to run and it worked, then built gradually. It really worked well for me.
So pleased you have a diagnosis Flora, and don't feel bad one bit for the decision to not do the 250km. EPV is not often talked about, yet as you say, so common. Enjoy that rest Flora and you'll get out the other side. Xx
You smashed it, one of your best performances, considering the elevation and mental struggles...(repeat) one of your best performances!!! AND you have recovered very well, and are living the life most of us can only envy! Amazing! You achieved all this despite being sick! As you said "better than I've ever done in any race before" (pacing). By the way, I was getting consistently very high heart rate readings, and found out that my HR monitor was 'cadence locked', and was reading my high 170s cadence many times. I switched HRMs and immediately felt better....something to look into .....well I hope you get some more races in soon as it seems you're in peak shape. You've done extremely well, both performance-wise, and in terms of recovery.
Thank you very much for the report and your summary. What a super special experience in your life, Flora. Congratulations again! And now... Take your time! Get well soon! And stay disciplined!! ;)
Such a valuable video Flora, thank you. After your recent posts on Instagram I decided to get some bloods done too, and we’ve discovered some issues that I was unaware of that are also causing fatigue. About to start treatment, so I’m really glad I follow you on all your socials! Hope your recovery goes well. Xx
Congrats again on your great OCC finish! Take care of yourself and you'll be back very soon! I had to bail on my race which was last Saturday (Sept. 9th) due to covid. Was close to being recovered, but the race was way too hard for not being 100%. Targeting a race on Oct. 7th, so hopefully am back to being healthy.
I got EBV in April 2018, and it wasn't diagnosed until July (also had an ECG and blood tests etc). I felt awful until August and extremely fatigued until November. The tail was long, it is hard to know when I felt fully back to normal - in retrospect maybe by Feb 2019. It was mentally tough as I kept thinking "am I still fatigued or have I gotten out of shape...?". Hoping that you will feel better soon, but know that full recovery is the most likely option
OH...! so sorry for what you are going thru Fiona!!! I had this too and did (ozone therapy) it is natural treatment that fully oxygenates the system and its just me, but it really enlivened my body and pushed out virus ...really highly recommend will overcome this!!

Stay healthy and self aware of what your body is telling you 🤙🏽 best of luck in your next adventure…Love the footage you created and the this video closing the loop of your OCC Race 🙏

She had a couple gallons of blood drawn, and they discovered it was Lyme disease. Kelly/ben just read your point, Great comment ! Yea i do alot in the Lakes and people are more on the look out for it given we are used to being around ticks/sheep, but it's shocking the ignorance around it, from both an indivdual perspective in the intial symptoms but also the medical profession. It should be taught in schools! I had a friend at Uni who was getting progressively worse and i said to her to get a check for Lyme's as she had tied it down to not long after doing the west highland way. Sure enough nearly 2 years of being told no abnormalities came back postive. It is super serious condition and so easy to catch, with life altering issues if not caught. It would actually be worthwhile in this being an episode in itself, as the amount of people that go off for weekend events in the Lakes, Wales, Scotland or up here for a weekend and not really appreciate the dangers lurking. Incidently its really prevalent on the South Coast also so even taking your dog for a walk across the fields!
I was hit really hard by Mononucleosis when I was 21. Got hospitalized due to high fever. It lasted about a month and just one week later, I startet as a soldier... The first month was HARD! But then my strengh startet comming back quite quickly. One strange thing was, that for almost a year I could not have any alcohol. It's also just a really long way with a lot of descents, so maybe not surprising. I'm glad it held off that long tbh!
Take care Flora. My husband has struggled with chronic fatigue for 20 years without any sympathy or answers from doctors (possibly triggered by a virus or a significant life event) it’s a really difficult area. I was also sick for around 5 months a couple of years ago, you have my full sympathy
I don’t understand how the medical community ignores chronic fatigue so easily when so many people suffer from it! Not to mention Long Covid is chronic fatigue as well. I hope your husband is managing ok and finds some more support soon.
Hi Flora, thanks for another great video. Do you have the link to the charity you mentioned? It's a real shame you can't do the run but we can still donate 👍
This is SO kind. Thank you. I absolutely don't expect anything, but the money will still go to the charity, so if you'd like to donate you can 🤗 www.justgiving.com/fundraising/flora-beverley3
Great advice at the end .. 👍👍 always listen to your body it basically tells us when it needs a rest . Great effort by the way . Pretty inspiring to be honest 🫡
Sad news, but also good that you know and can beat the virus. My son had a similar virus that caused chronic fatigue and he couldn't do a few minutes of exercise without needing to lie down. It took several months to get over it, but he did, and you will, get through. He's running the 50K Ultra with me on 1st Oct, but I rolled my foot on a run last night and the tendons are sore and the foot is swollen! Hopefully, it will be fine in 2 weeks, but having prepared so well up to now, will I be able to do the run if I can't do any exercise until the race?
Ah sorry to hear that about your son! Glad he's better now :) I would say a) speak to a physio if you can and b) try to get in at least one run a few days before the race to assess the damage. I imagine it'll be fine unless you've torn something, but you'll be more likely to go over it on the race again, so you want to make sure it's OK to run. 50k is a long way!
Great news, sort of, that you now know about the EBV diagnosis. Cyclist Mark Cavendish had a spell. Some brilliant RUclips footage out of Chamonix, as well as yours ! :) Marcus Kjellberg, Kofuzi's upload "Runners Weekend Chamonix 2023" a certain person makes a brief appearance at 24.34 ! :) Enjoy chilling out, best you can. Get that paragliding trip booked over Chamonix for next year ! Rest easy :)
Many thanks Flora for uploading this - Fantastic to watch you finish the OCC..... 50k - Massive well done But gutted to hear you've collared the EPV Epstein-Barr virus.... nasty - listening to your body is all you can do and slow recovery is not fun but it is uplifting too start running again even though is zone 2 ... just watch your heart rate and keep that low too - speedy recovery 🤕
It’s funny you say that, I’ve noticed a lot of people get EBV which attack the white blood cells and weaken the immune system. Am sure it’s been around before the vaccine but I wouldn’t rule this out. It’s good to be open minded. X

Marcus Kjellberg, Kofuzi's upload "Runners Weekend Chamonix 2023" a certain person makes a brief appearance at 24.34 ! :)
Enjoy chilling out, best you can. Get that paragliding trip booked over Chamonix for next year ! Rest easy :)
Ah yes I hear he has a great documentary on it! I will have to watch. Ooooh I haven't seen that, thanks for the heads up.

Glutathione supplements can help your fatigue
Many thanks Flora for uploading this - Fantastic to watch you finish the OCC..... 50k - Massive well done
But gutted to hear you've collared the EPV Epstein-Barr virus.... nasty - listening to your body is all you can do and slow recovery is not fun but it is uplifting too start running again even though is zone 2 ... just watch your heart rate and keep that low too - speedy recovery 🤕
I suppose it gives you time to write &, research.
Absolutely! I already feel a bit better

Vaccine
Really?? *sigh*
It’s funny you say that, I’ve noticed a lot of people get EBV which attack the white blood cells and weaken the immune system. Am sure it’s been around before the vaccine but I wouldn’t rule this out. It’s good to be open minded. X
