I majored in Psych. Back in the '80s, IO was the only way to make a livable salary in Psych. Another option was an MSW (which could do counseling the same as a Ph.D. in Psych) but it was very competitive. After 20 years, I switched to Information Technology and doubled my salary. Sadly, Psych has always been the illegitimate child of the medical world. Ancient stigmas die hard.

Just graduated with my bachelors in psych last year and I’ve had the most tumultuous time finding a job in the mental health field that pays enough, doesn’t burn you out, and opportunity for advancement. I also have always had a business mindset and even started one in undergrad so I think this route is more black and white and would be a MUCH better fit for me! Literally same here! Well at least in terms of thoughts - I'm a few years out of psych undergrad lol. Have worked in psych nonprofit, then ABA, then dabbled in HR, and now Special Ed teacher. Looking at master's... Thought I was sure I would just go the LCSW route, but now I'm not so sure. IO Psych might be a better fit for me. Partially for the same reason - the career path is more clear, and I'm the sort of person who needs that lol.

I'm not a professional by any means yet, but I spent 2 years as a psych researcher and gave many presentations, including a thesis defense, about my work. I treat presentations like conversations and find that it helps me feel more relaxed about it. Don't focus on the fact that you're the center of attention, focus on making sure that you collect your thoughts and dictate them in a way that benefit people just like you would in a normal conversation. Visualizing bullet points when I'm nervous also helps.

You’re an introvert!?!? You’re quite an amazing one.
Thank you for the information, as I’m entering my graduate degree in psychology, I chose I.O because there were less students in that program 😅 and have discovered I genuinely want people to reach work/career satisfaction as I have.
Currently I work for a company that has openings in “talent development.” I’m hoping they accept my application seeing they are looking for applicants to currently be enrolled in a 4 year degree in a “relatable field.” I seriously can’t wait to get their feedback or interview.
My only fear is I’d have to leave the floor as a phlebotomist, and that position is currently more in demand, but it’s not what I want to do for the rest of my life.
I genuinely do like the company itself, and hope I land an I.o position quick through my current employer.
Either way you’re a wonderful informative motivator.
    Thank you again.

Hi! I should say first that this varies so much from company to company (and more specifically manager to manager) so my response won't apply to all IO positions.
Most days I work 8am-5pm (unfortunately 8am is becoming more of the norm). Throughout the day I'm meeting with clients to discuss their needs, having internal team meetings, and presenting/holding workshops with clients. My job has a lot of creativity in that I make my own presentations/workshops.
I will say unfortunately that 99% of IO jobs are going to be 8/9-5pm and at least a little stressful. Because you're essentially trying to help people at work there are a lot of personalities involved. Hope that helps!!

Good to have you back. Funny that most people don't read much during 2020 but I read like crazy. Doing nothing just gets me in a bad mood.

Great video, really interesting! I’m going to be finishing up my degree in HR Management soon. I’m currently working as an entry level HR Associate, but in 2022 my company is starting a new position of Recruiting Manager and I’m in line for the promotion. Do you have any book recs for this area?

Congrats! I don’t have book recommendations specifically about recruiting but I’m a huge fan of Adam Grant and he has a lot of great book recommendations so you could check those out. Good luck!

thank you! this was very helpful as im currently looking into this now. What would you think abot an already practicing licensed counselor who has a MA in clinical psyche, going and getting a graduate certificate in I/O Psyche?

Hi thr, Many thanks for talking abt this. One thing that I have never seen people doing in my 15 years of corporate experience is talking to a psychologist at work. Their toxic or pleasant behaviors never got discussed with anyone unfortunately. I am an aspirant in this study,so I am genuinely interested in knowing what opportunities there are for earning if at all I materialize this dream.

I found this video to be extremely beneficial for my own understanding of this career! I've always had an interest in pursuing i/o psychology. i'm about to be a high school graduate. would you say that your job salaries were satisfactory? and are there a lot of job opportunities as an i/o psych without a phd?

    • @ChapterStackss
      @ChapterStackss  3 года назад +1

Yes I think the salaries are definitely satisfactory! I got into this in the video, but if you're open to working in some facet of HR, there are a good amount of jobs.

Thank you for making this video. It was very informative but without giving me the anxiety/information fatigue that I get when I go to the websites (like SIOP). I do have a couple of questions, tho. I'm interested in DEI, so would like to know if (1) I/O Psychologists also work in this area, and (2) if so, what do they do? Also, even though I understood what your occupation is, I have a hard time envisioning what is a day of work like for you? Say, you get to work and do exactly what (on a generalized daily basis)? This turned out to be a lot of questions (and quite personal) so I'll understand if you can't answer (lol). Still liked the content and appreciated it.

Hi, dear! Thank you for the wonderful video! Do you also mind sharing: Would pursuing a non-BPS-accredited Masters Degree in Organisational Psychology make a difference in landing consultancy jobs? Especially if your bachelors was from a different field, not psychology.

That's it, I'm going all in into a master's level I-O Psych program. I wanted to go into a cognitive psych program but there are no master's level cognitive psych programs in my area (or anywhere for that matter. If there are, let me know).
I have one question, should I take business courses since I'm still in undergrad?

This was the most helpful information on I/O Psychology that I've heard yet! Thank you! I am curious what category of I/O Psych or HR that you describe here that would be best for someone that really enjoys working with people one on one or in small groups? Additionally, I enjoy coaching and I'm wondering if there is a way to get involved with coaching right off the bat as an entry level HR employee or if that is something that would have to wait until down the road? Appreciate your thoughts!

Interesting! All of the jobs I mentioned are also within healthcare organizations, but if you’re more interested in doing research on the topic then may be a PhD would be a bit be a better idea. Good luck!
