17:54 because historically having a light skin tone symbolized nobility and wealth. The nobles stayed inside their castles in the shadow while the commoners had to work on the fields in the sun and thus got tanned. This is also were the therm "Blue blood" comes from because you could actually see the (blue) veins through the light skin of the nobility while you could not though the tanned skin of the commoners.
@bean boy Yeah exactly in Europe people tend to fake tan or try to be as tan as possible naturally, this is because it's actually another symbol of wealth and upper social class that has completely shifted since a few centuries (when white was considered better for the reasons you mentioned). Now if you are tan, that means you can afford to go on vacations in sunny areas, if you are too white it means you don't get out of your house very often.

So lighter skin is praised because it is seen as sign of wealth and power. It is the opposite in most white country, because the common people now work indoor (factory, office...) during daytime so they can't get a tan. Having a tan as a white guy is synonymous to a guy that can go to vacation or can manage to have free time during the day. @Pepelucho Ramos Arquinga yeah...
I support Senegal in the AFCON and World Cup even though I'm from Kenya, Diouf inspired my football career.
So excited for this episode 😁 love to Senegal 🇸🇳 from Canada 🇨🇦!! Great people and food!!

I'm senegalese and thanks a lot! I know canadians are the nicest people out there!
End of the episode: "Serbia is coming up next!"

Wow, thank you for letting me know Ousmane Sembène, his movies are great and some are for free on youtube with english subtitles! a great discovery
Noah:

has an awesome deep voice
Conclusion: he's a cyberpunk rockerboy
Also he has superpowers. Noah is an X-Men.
I own a book in spanish called "Luna de Senegal" (Senegal's moon) about a little girl from Ziguinchor who moved to Vigo, Spain as an immigrant. The book is very moving and made me cry when I started reading it.
Wow! Thank you for the amazing video about our country. Proud to be senegalese 🇸🇳
I think Keith starts every conversation- “Free use, don’t sue”
I don't really get why he says it though, it's just a T-shirt :P
@@etoinedevries7583 Because record companies are very litigious. (aka "sue-happy") They sue over ANYTHING.
@@ms_scribbles But aren't things like T-shirts with a band on it usually from the record company that own the band?
I would think that would just be their merchandise so why would they sue people that but their merch?
It could be a different case if the shirt is just from another company sure, but then wouldn't the company get sued instead of the wearer?
Harmattan: threatens Senegal
Senegal: plants trees
Harmattan: Understandable, have a great day
I really loved this video, love all the way from Sweden. But my family are from Senegal / Mali. 🇬🇼🇲🇱🇸🇳

Well, this was definitely an interesting episode. I did not expect Senegal to have so much info to offer. Can't wait for Serbia! :)
That's the charm of the african nations.
Dakar is the westernmost point of mainland Afro-Eurasia, and the only extreme point with a capital city!
Much Love & Thanks for your series! GREETINGS from Jamaica 🇯🇲!

Youssou N'dour and Ismael Lô been among my favourite African musicians for ages. I knew a Moroccan doctor who got his MD in Senegal. My friend would make fun of him and say he would never get a hired in a Moroccan hospital assuming higher education in senegal is a joke. Every time the doctor sees a senegalese he would impress them with his wolof.
yes we love our senegalese brothers.and yes you can work here if you're qualified.
love from morocco
A lot of Moroccan doctors actually learned Medicine in Senegal. We are known for having ones of the best Medicine schools in Africa
Research how many people from Morocco live and study in Senegal 🤷🏿♂️ and guess what most of them study science over here
After the independence in 1960, Senegal's UCAD (Université Cheikh Anta Diop) had the best MD program all over the French speaking Africa and that until the very recent years. It is not uncommon to find many French speaking africans leave their own countries to pursue their higher education in Senegal.

18:00 C'mon indeed, this skin bleaching stuff really went out of hand, even here in South Africa. Dark skin is beautiful skin.
Even in South Africa, Aren't a bunch of ethnic groups like mostly light skin(Xhosa, Khoisan, Tswana etc)
yep
@Caligula Only for the white people, really. There's still plenty of colorism and racism towards dark skinned folks in Europe. They just like when white people are lightly tanned because it makes them seem more adventurous/healthy, but as soon as it's a person of color with dark skin they seem to change their minds.
White skin is more beautiful
