Everytime im on the court shooting around, i make most of my threes and my midranges,etc. But instantly when im in a game, even if im wide open, i miss all my shots cause i get a little nervous and get tense. You need to remember that the 36% average is actually inflated, due to the best shooters taking the most shots, therefore effecting the percentage the most. The "average" NBA player would likely actually shoot around 30-31% from 3.

    There is a factor called muscle memory also. If you keep practicing shots everyday for a good hour or longer you definitely get better, and you keep your bodies mechanics fresh in relevance to shot form, how far you bend your knees, release etc. and it pretty much becomes automatic as long you keep it up daily. Its those times where you stop shooting for weeks or months that cause your mechanics to reset and its almost like you have to learn all over again.

    There are like hundreds of things that can also cause variants in your shot. Even down to stuff like how long your fingers are, how wide your hand is, how weak or strong your wrist are or your ankles even stuff like how smooth or rough your skin is on your finger tips. Like its crazy how many things can mess with your shot. I've had guys that have long skinny fingers and wide hands that get sweaty palms and have smooth skin that just get shot grip on the rock haha. I've had guys who have weak little baby wrist so they overcompensate with their legs and have a slow ass jumper. its a deep rabbit hole my dude.

Even tho u shouldn’t u could shoot the ball without flicking ur wrist and easily get it to the rim. Assuming hes above middle school level. Baby wrist I’m training and playing with 8 year olds

    Scot Shot, this is absolutely the best explanatory video on shooting that I've seen on the internet. Once you understand the mechanics of shooting (or form as you put it), this video allows you to impact shooting performance positively as a player or a coach.
    You talk about VARIANCE. I learned it back in the early 70s as your RANGE OF ERROR. Beginners have a large range of error. Experts have a tiny range of error. Increasing your skill means decreasing your range of error, or variance.
    I like how you connect poor mentality or confidence to an immediate decrease in performance to explain good practice foul shooting as opposed to poorer game foul shooting. I would suggest that game pressure and fatigue also contribute to a decrease in performance as they will contribute to greater variance.
    I do feel, however, that mentality or confidence can be increased. The more practice, the more you see your ball go in the special way that good mechanics put the ball in, then your base confidence will grow. There IS a specific way that you can increase your confidence beyond that. Just say "YES" every time as the ball leaves your shooting hand. Make or miss, it improves your confidence. You put yourself into a shooting trance. Try it. It works.

    Great video! Here are some other factors that I think should be considered on top of the three mentioned here for anyonr who would want to do a thorough analysis.
    Role within team - someone who is the first socring option on the team often needs to take harder shots (e.g. end of shot clock isos), which can drag down percentage. In general, volume and efficiency are inversely correlated (e.g. Melo's Olympic stats)
    In addition, a larger role also necessitates spreading attention and practice time among a wider range of tasks and skills. Holding shooting skill constant between two players, the one who has more jobs to do (e.g. facilitate offense, attack the basket, guard best opposing player) will shoot a bit worse because he can't lock in on just shooting (Steph is impressive because he can handle, pass, and finish in addition to shooting). His practice time is also distributed more evenly; LeBron and Steph might train the same number of hours per day, but I'd be surprised if they're practicing shooting the same types of shots to the same extent.
    Physical fatigue - this is a confounding factor for both form and mentality. Furthermore, a bigger role on a team also complicates the fatigue variable if players are pushed past their limits to perform optimally.
    Team offensive system - a well designed and executed offense will generate higher percentage shots. Not all three pointers are created equal due to how open they are. I'd argue not even all open threes are created equal, because some flow naturally within the offense and thus are easier to practice and mentally anticipate.
    Team culture - a confounding variable for mentality. Having a coach, captains, and teammates that know how to encourage or motivate a player can make a huge difference in some cases. NBA players are professional athletes, but they're not robots with a fixed amount of "mental toughness" or static form.
    Physique/athleticism - strength, explosiveness, and length of a player predispose certain shooting forms to be viable options at a given level of competition for some players but not others. Non-elite athletes probably can't pull off Jordan/Kobe fadeaways efficiently agaist good defense no matter their practice, form and mentality. Likewise, no one under around 5'10" would have a good chance shooting with a slow release or a low release point against higher level competition even if they were lights out.

    When it comes to mentality, it's not just about clutch pressure, it can be about focus and ability to consistently concentrate on your shot. Not everything can be passed off to muscle memory, since you have to account for different positions, which comes down to your concentration in discerning those precisely each time.

    One thing not mentioned is the brain. It is interesting when we study what certain people can process and what others can't. During a shot, I have developed the ability to make numerous small adjustments based upon angle, fade, loft required, grip, etc. Most sharpshooters I have talked to have an amazing ability to process all of this data in the brief time they take a shot. Average players start their motion and reach their follow through without processing all of the little details in between.
    So, on top of some of your points, great shooters have a brain which is capable of managing more data points, make more adjustments, and fine tune their shot while taking it.

    Scott one key factor I think you're mising comparing us to nba players is the height. We may use the same form and good energy transfer, but if your height is not above 6 ft, you won't see the ease of shooting in that persons shot. Steph Curry has great form, but the reason why he caqn shoot with such ease is not based upon solely that, he is 6'3, which gives him additional height and body structure which makes him require less effort to shoot long distances. Idk just something I had in mind

    @themasterseye 6 лет назад +2

    I like most of what you had to say, however the two things you said are "out of your control"(Mentality and coordination), are most definitely not. These two things can also be filed under practice, there are many types of "games" or drills you can do to bolster your coordination making the link from your mind to your muscle much more fluid and quick. Also the mentality is mostly confidence, if you feel like the next shot you take will go in 100% of the time you are less likely to subconsciously put variance in your form (adjust your shot) which means muscle memory will take more effect and make the shot be more likely to be successful as long as you have trained that muscle memory well enough (practice). It all comes down to consistency.
    When you practice, do it with consistent form. Figure out how to get your body to do the most efficient shooting form and then practice that form as much as you can. Start with just one spot on the floor. Shoot 3,000,000 shots from that one spot if you have to until you become consistent. THEN move on to the next spot, and apply the foundation you built from your original spot to become consistent in the second, then the third, then fourth and so on. Consistency in practice is key to performance in the game.

    I wouldnt doubt that one of the reasons his variance is almost unnoticable is partly because someone is constantly passing him the ball after he shoots and he doesnt have to go after his own rebound everytime, someone would just retrieve it and pass it to him and he doesnt have to move.. he could just keep shooting continously without wasting time and movement.. under these circumsances you would not only put up tons more shots in a much smaller amount of time but it would be much easier to repeat the motion since your body literally just finished doing it.. so its not a marvel that stephen curry can shoot like this.. its fkn impressive.. but id imagine he prolly puts up a couple hundred to maybe a thousand shots every day.. with his coaches there to get him the rebound and give him the pass he can just focus solely on his technique continously without having to think about getting the ball, constantly retrieving the ball takes your mind off the mechanics of the shot form.. also hes been training this way since a very young age.. u watch his highschool maybe even his middleschool games he prolly has a great shot there too..

  • @cwehden
    @cwehden 6 лет назад +3

    There is also variance based on shot selection, Steph takes a turn of pull up 3's and off balance 3's which should lower his percentage but he still shoots a high percentage. Comparing his shot selection with Ray Allen who only really shot high percentage 3's from a set position and a pass. The ability to mitigate shot selection variance by practising under not ideal circumstances has helped Steph become much better than anything that came before. I bet he shoots off balance 3's a ton in practice.

    Im 5 foot 5 (almost 5 foot 6) and im a pass first type of guy. I like to play PF and SF but some times get put at center. i cant shoot 3's and can sorta shoot mid range. im not that fast. But i love defense. i get steals like crazy. when me and my team scrimmage when i put my hand in there face when they shoot they almost never make it (some kids are like 5 foot 9 or 10 and cant make shoots when im guarding them) i have below average handles but im working on it. who should i study?

      Styles shoot like kobe it would be best for your type. Feet slightly tilted to your left if you're right handed and right if left handed. Square your knees and never keep a flat foot. Flex your legs when you're shooting and keep your back straight but you can have a little tilt. I made that mistake. Hand under the ball and spread your fingers. Your elbow must be a straight line with your shooting shoulder and knee and right or left eye. Bring it up to your fore head and pull back and push forward. Hand in the cookie jar and follow through just above your head.

    I practiced free throw a lot (about 3 month) and I can shoot free throw with 76% accuracy (38/50). But I have been playing soccer all my life and I just can shoot with 70% accuracy from half field and 38% during games (from anywhere in the field). Even the net is bigger than basket. I guess controlling ball with foot is more difficult than hands. You thought?

    My shooting percentage in practice (no one covering me) is around 70%, but once I get to the side (when the 3pt line gets straight) it lowers the more to the sode I go. Once I get to the point I can almost see the side of the backboard, my percentage is around 10%. Why?

I am 5'9, very good at man to man defense, a good mid range shot, okay 3 point shot, better than average handles, okay drive, good amount of energy, and good hustle. How should I train or who should I study to train like.

      Got to work on the threes. Consistent three point shooters are valuable at every level. If you can hit semi-contested threes and can run and finish in transition you'll get playing time, even if you aren't the best ball handler so you can't play point guard.

    There's one problem, Steph has a lot more variance than other players who aren't as good shooters Klay has less variance yet is not as good as Steph, watch Steph's feet when shooting and you'll see he lands wide a lot of the time yet still makes the shot. It isn't that simple. I will agree that his upper body is very consistent.

      think of BEEF-balance eyes elbows and follow through. You keep balance with your feet and shoulders square to the rim and have your eyes trained at the back of the rim and elbow of your shooting hand straight with the rim at around a 90 angle and have your follow through where your shooting hand follows through where it looks like it is going to go through the rim.

    You shouldn't use in game 3pt percentage because then you gotta add how often they shoot threes in game also shooting a layup is different from shooting a three also look a free throw percentage because shooting a free throw is pure mechanics on form but the most unidentified problem with most people jump shot is how you jump for example most of your power in a jump shot comes from the jump the rest is momentum and mechanics which makes follow through important as well but what this videos said is very important it's how I unlocked my jump shot and I wish I would have saw this video before I figured it out my self.

You can have the best shooting form in the world and be like Stephen curry, but then one day, you show up to the basketball court and your shot just feels very unnatural and weird. Consistency is probably the hardest part about basketball.

    • @FadeHook23
      @FadeHook23 6 лет назад +3

      Hassan_dagoatTM work on your mid range and once you feel comfortable move to stationary 3point shots. All you need is a great standing/moving mid and a ok standing 3pt shot and you'll be unguardable. The worse thing you could work on are off the dribble 3s since most times even the best shooters never consistently can hit those types of shots.

    I just don’t play much anymore tbh it’s why I’m inconsistent shot wise whenever I hoop. But since I’ve got good size and I’m athletic I just play like a Giannas lol. If you’re big and athletic though you’re kinda screwed though when it comes to scoring... and let’s be honest unless you score somewhat you’re not going to get picked up for the next game if your team loses. People don’t look at defense and the intangibles in pickups just scoring.

  • @chima346

    Variance & time/situation are great mental aspects of shooting but you didn't mention the physical side as most great shooters Curry & Reddick have extremely short wingspans and strong cores i.e. less variance the longer your arms and the weaker you are the harder it will be to replicate a consistent shooting motion regardless of form

    • @ScotShotBasketball
      @ScotShotBasketball  6 лет назад

      That's true, especially when considering how strength or lack thereof can play into variance. But wingspan/arm length don't seem to be huge markers of a player's ability to shoot. 5 of the top 15 players with the largest wingspans in the NBA are above average shooters: Demarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, Brook Lopez, Lamarcus Aldridge, and Kevin Durant. Therefore it's very much possible to be a consistent shooter with remarkably long arms.

    • @chima346
      @chima346 6 лет назад

      Very true, I've just seen with all my basketball experience its harder to shoot with long arms but it is the NBA we're talking about so you'll have your exceptions lol but the average player/ person most likely struggles with this but great insight either way!

  • @JD-ny3vz
    @JD-ny3vz 6 лет назад +1

    I disagree with your point about coordination... The type of hand eye coordination needed for long range shooting is very different than the complete body control coordination someone like Derrick Rose possessed in his prime. One is being able to precisely aim and get an object at a target the other in controlling your own body's motion while having proper touch around the rim. I think touch, mentality and that hand eye coordination is most important at the NBA level. Look at Wade he has great form with little variance but he's a sub par 3 point shooter. I think he just doesn't have the touch or that long distance coordination along with maybe a lack of a shooters mentality
