    This video goes into detail about one of the most commonly uttered phrases on a basketball court - "hold your follow through." I discuss the reasons why holding your follow through won't actually help you to become a better shooter, especially if you have other, WAY more important technique issues to address. As always, I back up what I am saying with plenty of visual evidence. There's always more evidence out there too, so feel free to go on your own search. Enjoy!

    I want to clarify that I like Melo even though I used him as a counter-example in this video . Having said that, he hasn't been a consistently good 3 point shooter throughout his career. I think locking out his elbow every time he shoots would make the difference between being a 35% three point shooter and a 40% three point shooter

      I wouldn't say it's impossible to be a good shooter without locking out your elbow (Danny Green like you mentioned, KD is another), but for me it comes down to what is optimal. I really think locking out your elbow is a better option than not locking for the overwhelming majority of people. Plus, who knows, perhaps Green and KD would be EVEN better if they did? That's a possibility people don't often consider.

    The biggest reason I emphasize holding your follow through when I teach shooting is so that they can see what they did wrong in their release if they miss. Once they become a consistent and good shooter it doesn't matter but up until that point it's hard for them to see and self correct what they did wrong if they drop their hands right away.

    good video - i agree with everyting, except one thing: if my players have sloppy followthroughs, and theyre not aware of which finger theyre shooting with, they have to hold that ft to look and adjust. but thats a whole nother point, and not really for game situations

  • @zaskarclf
    @zaskarclf 5 лет назад

    I think the benefit of holding your shot has to do with teaching poise and balance, when you start learning how to shoot as it forces you to keep your body still and eliminate any unnecessary body movements. Once someone's muscle memory takes over with good technique, it is less useful, but it still forces one to have more body control or be more concious of what their body is doing while stroking their shot.
    YMMV depending how much body control one has. EG: My son flops around a lot and forcing him to hold his shot increased his accuracy a lot.

    Although I reckon a lot of coaches probably tell their kids to just "follow-through" because they cbf putting more effort into their teaching.

  • @achieveacademy
    @achieveacademy 5 лет назад

    I think the main idea here is that expending elbow outweights follow through, which I agree and as he pointed out, players do hold for a second. He is just saying that holding arm up for long doesnt impact shooting. Picking fouls and etc are not included in hia thesis.

  • @msarek4100
    @msarek4100 6 лет назад +3

    Find Kyrie's first games for Boston. He had spent the previous summer fixing his 3 form. The snap he put on his elbow lockout for corner 3's looks like they're breaking the joint, and yet at the same time, his follow through became longer than anything he had in CLE.
    So I think you're missing some element to the equation. My money is split between strength and arc. Kyrie has predominantly been a line-drive shooter. I'd bet the long follow through is about power, much like the hanging pause in the two-motion jumper is to offset the force of the vertical explosion.
    That would explain the airball free throws in your video. The centers are trying to lighten their touch due to height and strength, but it's failing because they're not generating any ground force from their legs.

  • @stevewatkins7144

    I agree that holding your follow through does not affect the flight of the ball. I disagree that it's unhelpful because it has other benefits. First, if you do it honestly, it is a check on your shot. In Melo's case, if he holds his follow through honestly, he only needs to look at his arm after he shoots to see that he didn't follow through. He can then correct it on his next shot. It's like checking where you landed after you shoot which I think is also important.
    If you jump straight up, you should land with your feet a few inches ahead due to the reactive force of the ball against your hand (Newton's third law) pushing your shoulders back and rotating your feet slightly forward - the so -called "sweep and sway". So if you land more than a foot ahead of where you jumped, you leaned forward probably off balance and need to do a better job of jumping straight up. And if you jump knowing you are going to check yourself when you land, it's a reminder you better go straight up.
    It's like a golfer holding his follow through after he swings. He should be able to stay balanced in that position after he hits the ball. So if he holds his follow through, he will tend to swing with better balance. If you never have a problem with balance, it's pointless as you say. But if you do, and you are unable to hold your follow through, you need to correct your balance next time.
    In addition, it has psychological benefits. You want your jump shot to be pretty. If you try to make it look pretty it has a better chance of going in. Holding your follow through is a way of bragging about how pretty your shot is, which has psychological benefits.

      Toes pointed at the basket. Shoulders and elbow as square with the hoop as possible. You want to leave both feet at the same time unless your shooting a fade away. So you can transfer the energy from the jump, directly into your shot. That's how I shoot at least.

    • @kojinakazawa3009
      @kojinakazawa3009 6 лет назад +4

      @@itz_akuma i wouldn't recommend ten toes to the basketb as it creates shoulder tension so if ur a righty, u should slighty tilt your feet to the left and vice versa. Unless ur already comfortable with ten toes square.

  • @ryanuy7118
    @ryanuy7118 Год назад

    Holding the follow through is important because if you miss sideways, you'll have an idea why based on your final form, which is the follow through.
    Steph doesn't hold his follow through in most of his shots here because upon his release, he already saw that it was straight to the basket (not going to miss left/right) which is why he drops his shooting hand in those instances subconsciously. We all subconsciously do that too oftentimes.

    Holding your follow through WILL help you develop your shot long-term. The reason why shooters like Curry dont need to follow through as often is because they have done it all their life. You dont follow through to hit your shot. You follow through to hit the next.

  • @scoop4321
    @scoop4321 5 лет назад

    I think you are wrong when you say holding the follow through does not affect your shot, since the ball has left your hand. One key to the follow through is to line your arm up with the hoop. If you hold it , you will tend to lock your elbow. If you pull your arm back as soon as you shoot, you lose the element of extending your arm towards the basket. You can tell right away if your arm is not pointing to the hoop if your extend it and hold it. You are more likely to miss if your don't. Good shooters can make minor corrections in their shooting technique when they miss a shot. If they are in a temporary slump, they make minor adjustments and keep getting closer and closer until the ball goes in the hoop like they want it to. Poor shooters are all over the map when they miss shots, and don't know how to make these adjustments. Good shooter are surprised and shocked when they miss. Poor shooters are surprised when they hit.

    I don't even need to watch this video to know that a follow through is completely unnecessary. Why would holding your hand out AFTER you shot the ball help you make it in any way?

    Follow throughs only work if you're Force sensitive.

    You can also see Deandre Jordan’s knees lock before he releases the ball. That’s wasted energy.

    Gonna have to disagree with you on this one. long term holding your follow through can improve your shot. it can help you reverse engineer your jump shot and identify mechanical errors. i would say thats pretty damn important.

      No need to do that when everyone has a camera in their pocket now. Just film yourself shooting and target your “engineering” to what’s needed most

      i do that as well. but on each individual shot when practicing you should know immediately why you missed a shot. sometimes your not sure. this is one thing that has helped my jump shot the most actually. because its like reverse engineering your shot. if d is right then abc must be right. Ive never seen a missed shot with a perfect follow through. it really creates good habits and muscle memory. also it adds a little swaggy confidence ;)

      heres a very interesting question I want to ask you. what are you thinking about when you shoot the basketball? are you thinking about several things or just one thing or not thinking at all?
