A Couple’s Garage Becomes Their Chic New Home

Bryan and Jen Danger left their Portland, Oregon, home for about three years, first moving to British Columbia for Jen’s job and then enjoying a yearlong road trip south through Mexico and Central America. During that time, they got rid of most of their belongings and rented out their early-1970s home. “When we got back, we realized we wanted to be here a significant portion of the year but we couldn’t afford our mortgage, so we talked through the options,” Bryan says. “The garage became an ‘aha’ moment.”

I don't normally care for the industrial aesthetic, but this tiny home is just STUNNING! In fact, it seems incredibly spacious, and not TINY at all. I've seen dozens of tiny home designs, and this has to be one of the best. I especially love the design of the bar that swings out to become a large dining table. Brilliant! Congrats on being able to live mortgage and rent free!
If i build this house where i live i would get robbed the first day living on it.

Hands down my very favorite Tiny Home design and context, although I wanted to see more of the bedroom or if you are using solar or wind.
Neither yet as it didn't fit the budget, but we're hoping/planning to add enough solar for both units at some point.

Very inspiring. Its nice to see people actually enjoy their one life instead of slaving away for what society thinks is normal. Also you are both extremely talented in what you were able to design and build yourselves.
Lovely, but hardly a normal size garage. It's huge.
I looked it up and the standard two car garage is 576 sqft. There's is just 460 sqft! Looks big, doesn't it? Gives me hope I can do something like this.

All I could do when I watched this is say, "WOW!" I love it. I remember visiting friends back in the day who had taken up residence in a double garage. There was a lot of shame connected to it. They had divided it up into rooms so it seemed really tight. Nowadays, so many people are enjoying alternative living situations. I do have to say that this took some money to make but their creativity probably saved a lot too. Great ideas there. I can't see leaving it open much in Portland. Too cold most of the time but to each his own. The ideas are so great. Thanks for posting.

I like every aspect of the whole story here, from the road trip to the make-it-yourself philosophy. Your esthetic is very appealing to my own tastes and I wonder how many others would like or prefer something different.

What a nice pick-me up story. It resonates with me because possessions feel heavy to me. I'd like to get to a point where I can just walk out of my life if I chose to, and not have my stuff to worry about.

LOL!! I had to go back & find it ( 5:04 mark ). Honestly? It looks pretty cool with the concrete design & they have (2) shower heads. Bigger than I imagined too. LOL
This is what happens when you live out of a van and shower outdoors for a year before building your perfect home... The shower was definitely one of our "luxury" items ;)

This is FANTASTIC. I really like the way it was designed and built by the owner. I've looked at literally a thousand tiny homes and this is by far my favorite. Primarily because it reflects YOU. I can feel the Zen right thru the internet. I'll check out your web site.
When there is a good design aesthetic, any place can become a functional livable space. Unfortunately, most people don't have that kind of eye for design. I know many people see and love this garage space and would move into it, given the opportunity. But fail to see how they can transform their very own space to be equally comfortable, chic and enviable.

Very nice craftsmanship. I love the big bearings and how you utilized the center as the hanging mount, simple and elegant solutions.
Dude I love having a room to myself and stuff but when I grow up, I totally wouldn't care having that exact thing, I house and only use the garage with someone renting for extra money if I need it. Great idea this married couple have made.
