  • since appearing on the tv series dance moms back in 2015, jojo siwa has absolutely dominated the preteen market with her giant hair bows, lively dancing, and kidz bop adjacent music. but in 2024 it looks like she's interested in branching out, or at least that's what she says. her latest release, karma, has been widely criticized online, so we decided to talk about all of the things that went wrong with it.

    The problem with branding child stars so they can transition into adulthood is that they seem to emphasize sexiness over maturity, which sells well because adults fetishize young adults. Being an adult is more than acting promiscuous or sexy, there’s more to life than who we’re with or attractive to.

      Thank you. That’s such a true statement. You’re right, adulthood isn’t just about sexual maturity. It’s also about thinking and loving well. Sexual maturity is supposed to be an intimate and physical manifestation of those two things. But adulthood actually begins with intellectual and personal maturity. It’s how we consent, for example.
      Sadly, JoJo has learned the opposite. It’s not just her though… it’s laden throughout our entire culture.

      She should look at the girl that played Vicky on the old show 'Small Wonder'. She walked away and lived a normal life in private and became a nurse.
      Danica McKellar, that played Winnie Cooper on 'The Wonder Years', went to college and kicked arse in her math studies.
      Neither needed to resort to being a pervert for degenerates to become actually inspiring people.

    Just yesterday I saw a recent Zendaya quote where she talks about how transitioning into playing adult roles has been hard for her, and you understand that it's because she didn’t hit normal social milestones due to being a child star, so she doesn't know what a normal adult, or even young adult, is supposed to be like. I feel this might be especially true for Jojo, who was not only a child star but a *brand* her whole life.

Imagine the weird ways that must effect you, and then feeling alone about it because it's not as common or looked into. I was a MESS as a teenager and for most of my 20s. If you are a child star but your guardians have treated you as a growing human rather than a money machine you wouldn't feel the same urgency to break free because there is nothing threatening you. Child stars aren't made on their own... they are usually a product of money hungry, fame starved narcissists who have no problem sacrificing their kids physical, mental and emotional well being. That's probably why Zendaya is Zendaya yet Bella Thorne is... not.

They were the ones talking about her on social media every day and posting the latests pics or videos. Jojo, didn't just portray herself as a 6 year old girl for the previous decade, but she also has a completely shapeless body (no hips, no curves, no... anything) and she has the voice of a middle-aged mother of 7 who smokes 3 packs of Newports a day. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Jojo doesn't really have her own personality. Like what you addressed in this video is so spot on. She's been marketed and presented as a commodity for little girls her whole life, so now that she's trying to be "edgy" it doesn't come off as genuine at all! She's going through the motions of what she and her team thinks a "child/teen star" should be doing; she's trying to give Miley, Lindsay, Britney, Selena... But all it's really giving is the same fake sparkly Jojo just with a black-and-white filter on it. She's never been herself one day in her life! If she came out with something that was really stripped back, wearing less makeup and rhinestones, and going with some acoustic/folk sound I think that would've been received better. It would actually be the opposite of what she's been putting out.

    However a celebrity, who i think is a great example of a seamless transition from childhood to adulthood is: Zendaya💁🏾‍♀️.
    Most of us grew up, seeing Zendaya from Disney and then eventually into projects free from Disney. And considering, her peers like Bella Thorne at the time that was having drastic changes that felt forced and intentionally controversial (mostly)...Zendaya's was gradual and well balanced imo. It didn't felt like the pendulum swung too far to the left or too far to the right, making the transition a natural one over time. And here we are today and everyone remembers Zendaya from Disney but definitely knows she's an adult now and treats her as such. If Jojo wants to be taken seriously, her transition should be natural and feeling so forced and curated- maybe she needs to take a page out of Zendaya's book💁🏾‍♀️!

    I'm glad I don't follow anyone who made fun of JoJo for being cringy. I had no idea that was going on. It's ok to be cringy. I think everything about this is okay.
    The only troubling thing is the allegations, and it's hard not to blame that on the environment she practiced business in as a very recent child. 21 is still freakishly young, a young woman instead of a young child. If she hurts people, she needs to be held to a higher standard, but there's a way to be firm without jumping at the chance to tear her down.
    Her dancers obviously need the most support. But on the topic of Jojo, you can't exploit a child their whole life for entertainment which has always been at their expense, then flip the script and suddenly punish them for being lame, cringy, or socially awkward as an adult... Or condemn them for being evil when they do something unacceptable and treat others the way they were treated.
    I hope the dancers are taken care of now. And I hope JoJo has the support she needs to break the cycle. Most 21-year-olds haven't. It's not an excuse, I think it's just an important contextualization. 21 is stupid young to those of us who are older than that, LOL. Especially when the conversation is dominated by whether she's cringy or not .... Punishing the child star for shit that doesn't matter has happened over and over again. I don't think we're out of the cycle anytime soon
    Obviously a different situation, but it reminds me of how everyone was team Free Britney, but now that she's free, people make fun of her for being awkward and weird. Do we really want the best for these women, or do we just want them to be effortlessly sexy and cool? Because right now, refusing to turn them into a laughing stock is only under the condition of them being sexy and cool.
    It's ok to analyze what she's doing artistically and offer advice, but people should be wary of another child-star-turned-spectacle. Also, why is homaging Elton John ok, but KISS is odd? They're both old men.

It feels like sexploitation because the angles they're taking: barely legal, naughty, fetish. Irl queer women's sexuality is more nuanced and complex than this. The development of one's sexuality as a young person is a gradual process unless they're going through some kind of trauma (which we shouldn't consume as entertainment). It isn't about glamorous young bodies thrashing around. It's awkward and weird and confusing. The show Sex Education portrays this well.

      As a former homeschool kid who went to public school senior year for those events, you miss nothing. I don't know why it's treated like such a huge milestone, the prom experience was getting dressed up and listening to bad pop music in a dark room with friends. I ate a brownie, watched people dance badly, took a picture and went home. Same for my sister's prom when I went with her, idk it really feels insignificant personally but that's just me.

    • @girl2ninja
      @girl2ninja Месяц назад +13

      I went to public school and I think it's not about prom itself. It's about the experiences you make. My memory of actual prom was whatever, listening to bad pop music just the same. But I remember getting my makeup done by my dad's friend, and actually getting my makeup done "professionally" for the first time. And my parents let me stay up late after so my friends and I went out to get skewers in our fancy dresses. I don't think it was prom itself, but being with friends (and family) and having fun and pretending/playing grown up -while not fully expecting to have been grown up

    • @anonview
      @anonview Месяц назад +4

      It depends on your culture and social environment. In the Philippines, senior prom is usually the last big event before graduating. It's the last time you'll be able to stay out late with classmates whom you might never see for a while because you'll be entering different colleges. Since public schools here cater to specific districts, you will usually go to class with the same set of classmates from kindergarten until high school. It's like you have a whole other family at school, and prom is your way of celebrating the fact that you're ready to leave the nest.
      Edit: Forgot to mention that prom is also an important recognition ceremony in more elite schools. Active members of the student council and other school organizations will often receive awards (certificates of merit) for their contribution. Some schools even treat it as an informal induction ceremony for next year's student council.

    This is such a good breakdown! (As always.) I think, like you’re saying, part of the reason KARMA feels so disingenuous is because JoJo isn’t actually stepping into anything adult, especially in comparison to her earlier content. Being genuinely adult in the public eye isn’t about being “a bad girl” it’s about acknowledging a part of yourself you haven’t shown yet, or showing deeper self awareness of your image. Sexualizing your image can certainly go towards that, but there needs to be genuine, personal emotion behind that content. You don’t become an adult because you “come out” as an adult, you become one through your actions and changes in worldview, which is then naturally shown in the content you create. Between the allegations and JoJo Siwas known past experiences, I can’t help but feel sympathy for her as someone who wasn’t given the support and experiences they deserved as a child, and now finds themselves repeating behavior that has rewarded them in the past, stuck in childhood patterns. In a way, she is, unfortunately, becoming an adult, because the older she gets the more consequences her actions come with, for good reason, because being adult means having the power to heal from past mistakes and become something healthier. I really hope that she finds the space to be a person outside of the public eye sooner rather than later.

So she fought the producers but the producers almost always won and got their way. So she really didn’t want JoJo to come onto her Dance Moms team because she “would have chosen someone with beautiful feet and legs” but she couldn’t have what she wanted. So that’s how she got on the team after Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition.

    I feel like they missed the "natural" window where her maturing into an adult/ her own age audience would have been genuine and graceful. In my opinion it was after she came out and when she was on DWTS. I connected with her then because I've wanted to see same gender partners for a competition show since I was a kid. Her choices to come out despite her child audience and to choose a female dance partner came off very authentic and thoughtful. It also seemed like she was growing and maturing while on the show, developing out of her dance mom's full out dance thing and doing well with different dance styles. She also seemed to have supportive/positive relationships on the show with her mentor etc instead the toxic one she used to have with Abby Lee.
    I was excited to see what she'd do next. It felt like a coming of age kind of moment and she did get some new audience from time period but then it felt like they squandered the momentum and image she had started to create by following it up with years of just being a Tik Tok personality that had so much weird relationship stuff happening out in the public eye. That became her career, messy influencer that kept trying new marketing schemes.

    Honestly, once someone mentioned your tweet about Jojo Siwa’s rebrand, I’ve been waiting for you to make a video on it. As someone that is straight and a supporter of the community, Jojo Siwa saying that she wants to do gay pop is weird because she isn’t the first because if anything we had people like Elton John, David Bowie, Queen, Boy George, Lady Gaga, Rina Sawayama, Adam lambert, Muna, Janelle Monae, Lady Gaga, village people, Kim Petras, Ricky Martin, George Michael, and many others. With those people, they weren’t afraid of taking any boundaries like Rina Sawayama for example because she when she released the music video for her song this h*** back in 2022, not only was she not afraid to swear but she had visuals that made sense that represented her as a queer woman whereas Jojo on some island doesn’t. I also want to say that her song is a distraction from the allegations she has from her girl XOMG pop after she mistreated them.

It's just weird, gross and uncomfortable. A true adult is able to handle mature concepts or topics, whilst not needing to go overboard, sell their bodies for attention that will not last, and can keep the focus on their skills. Never will understand when, why or how hypersexuality or outrageous behaviour became synonymous with growing into an adult.

Because of her marketable persona, she's still being controlled by everyone around her and isn't getting to mature like other people. The reason why there are less male child stars doing this is because of the way those marketers treat them, which is, yes, misogynistic. But it's hard to find those stories because many male child stars don't deal with it, as the marketers make things easier and better for them.
