    Hi Jimmy, Just found your site. My Mazda mechanic (Australia) told me the most important reason to prefill the oil filter is to prevent micro tearing in the dry filter membrane as dense cooler oil is forced in on the very first startup. Prefill guarantees the new oil gushing in pushes on existing oil like on usual startup so it's good to have even oil pressure inside the filter at this first instant.

  • @TheCulnes

    I started doing this awhile back after discussing with a friend. I had not even thought about doing it and it made perfect sense. Most vehicles are not vertical anyways which is another reason I probably did not think about it. I highly recommend people to do this! Some vehicles will make very noticeable clatter when you start them on a dry filter and it is difficult to hear it from the driver seat often times. I start by pinching out two small holes in the plastic seal of the bottle to make it easier to fill the filter without making a mess. It takes a few minutes to get it right because it keeps on absorbing into the filter media and lowering the level in the canister. If your filter is anything other than vertical, you can add oil and then rotate it in your hands and it will absorb a lot more oil than you think. Keep going until it gets to the point that it will spill at your installation angle. Yes 99% of engines out there have never had pre-filled oil filters and may have hundreds of thousands of miles. As for me and my engines, we will prefill !
    Another small tip...if you have ever had trouble removing a filter, buy one of the three pronged "spider" wrenches and thank me later!

    Why well I was showed that way. Later on the theory is it prevents dry start up damage when you start it after the oil change.

    May be just a useless extra step.

      Start the car a bit before the change.. not long enough to get hot and then do your change.. no need to worry about a dry start. You actually aren't supposed to pre-fill.. many companies state this in manuals including CAT. The part you are dumping oil into is the clean side coming back into the motor.. if you get dirt into that part while filling or if something is in the bottle.. you can shove it right into your motor and bearings....

    Unless you're using water or changing the oil and then not restarting the engine for a long time like weeks. There should always be oil clinging to the metal engine parts regardless of filling the filter. If it made a difference, it would be in the owners manual that you must prefill the filter. It doesn't matter. Those of us with OCD, like myself prefill the filter for peace of mind.

    Congrats on your new purchase. Nice ride. I do agree on pre-filling the oil filter, even on horizontal mounted ones (obviously I only use the necessary amount just to saturate the element inside without a spill). One tip though: I noticed the way you handled the oil bottles. I am sure your pulse is steady enough, but I would recommend turning the bottle so that the neck is opposite of the oil filler opening or oil filter, or use a short funnel (less or no spillage and more flow control). Inline six. Hmm, I have not seen one of those in ages (the last one was my wife's 78 Nova).
    What is next: plugs, filters, Big 3 upgrade? Let us know.

    Even if it is a side mounted filter, I’ll wet the filter element with oil, maybe 1/8 or 1/4 full and roll it around before installing. I little is better than none at all I figure, plus it lubricates the thread and gasket which should be done anyway.

  • @pospc2
    @pospc2 6 лет назад +1

    I prefill all filters myself. I am careful to make sure none of the seal from the bottle gets into it. If it's a side filter(like my Infiniti and Navigator) I fill it partway. Cover it and place it back in the box and close the box top. This helps keep the oil clean. After all the oil in the middle is going to be sent right to the oil galley. I also like to do the "floor it" method. Place the peddle to the floor, crank engine for a few seconds. Let off the key and accelerator and start like normal. I get no engine noise this way. I have also torn 2 of my engines down and found no unusual wear in the main bearings or rod bearings that would suggest contaminated oil.
    Reason for one engine being torn down was due to timing chain jumped. Other was BOUGHT with rod knock and drove on for a while. Yes the one rod that did knock showed contamination, but that can be assumed it was from the bearing material. before anyone ask it was the rod bearing farthest from the oil pump. So contamination from unfiltered oil from a prefill is UNLIKELY BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE and I highly doubt that was the cause of rod knock to start with.

    good vid bro. i have been filling the oil filter on my 2008 ford f-250 w/5.4L v-8 since i got in in 2009. i normally fill the oil filter to the threads let it sit for a day, and refill it some more since the filter media absorbs the oil over 24hrs for max saturation. when the filter is full of oil it normally has about 22 ounces of oil in it and i spin it up on the oil filter housing when i am ready to do my oil change on my truck, this virtually eliminates dry starts and the oil gauge comes up to max pressure in a split second. this should in theory save the engine from any wear and tear.

    Oil filters is kinda up the person. It doesn't make a difference. However you should ALWAYS prefill a fuel filter (especially if diesel) air pockets can damage fuel injectors and lead to rough running. Priming your fuel filter with your pump will work, but it's generally best to fill it if possible.

My wifes 2014 dodge dart has nearly 60,000 miles i use a larger (taller) filter than stock and prefill it was well, its the only dodge dart of its generation out of 40+ dart owners thats in a car group that still has the original engine and uses/burns zero oil between changes and we change it every 3-4,000 miles.
    I cant say prefilling prevents damage but does keep less air being introduced to the bearings on a freash oil change.

    Is it necessary? It depends!. Before you change the oil you always warm up the engine first so the oil pours out better and faster, now it takes about 20 minutes to change the filter and add new oil , so when you start up the engine with the new oil, everything inside has a film of the old oil from warming up the engine, so it is really not a dry start up unless you drained the oil without warming up the engine that has been sitting for a few days. Just my two cents!

  • @Resistculturaldecline
    @Resistculturaldecline 5 лет назад +1

    Prefilling can be counterproductive. If you get any debris into the center of the filter, it gets pumped unfiltered directly into the engine's very tightly clearanced parts.
    It can be plastic from the bottle seal, and the oil in the bottle isn't gauranteed from the maker to be filtered down to what an engine requires which is usually 30 microns or smaller.

    • @vincentrobinette1507
      @vincentrobinette1507 11 месяцев назад

      Oil is usually filtered through a 5 micron filter, before filling the bottles. that's 6 times finer than the filter on the engine. Bulk oil from a 55 gallon drum could possibly have sediment, so, prefill the filter from a quart bottle, then, fill the engine crankcase from the bulk drum. Oil will never be cleaner, than when poured straight out of a new bottle.

  •  5 лет назад +27

    No need to do it otherwise the oil filter manufacturers would tell you to do it. As soon as you start your engine, the oil will start circulating and fill the filter.

    Not sure if you're car has the same problem but many GM SUVs like the Acadia or Saturn Outlook etc. Has a design flaw where the power steering hose crimp rubs against the air conditioning line up by the firewall and the AC line loses the battle. Check if you have that problem before it's too late because replacement lines are unavailable. The location also prohibits splicing the line. However you can by a cap to terminate the rear line that has the hole but you lose rear AC.

    There are 2 things to know when pre filling an oil filter. 1. What is the direction of flow for filtration. 2. Am.i getting trash in the filter that may be unfiltered after I star the engine. I saw the PIP in this video showing the way the filter was filled, this is wrong. Filters need to be pre filled from the small outer holes in the filter because this is the direction of travel for oil flow. If you fill from the center of the filter this will be un filtered oil right off the bat. I'm working with an issue now because of a bad oil change. Trash was introduced to the filter by way of priming that went directly to the first crank bearing and destroyed it. You may trust yourself but it doesn't take much to cost yourself a ton of money. If you're going to prime your filter be sure you prime it properly. If you're going to make a video discussing the pros and cons of doing this. Be sure your illustration is proper as not to misinform those that take it to heart.

    Is it bad not to do it ? Definately yes , if you want the maximum life from your engine then why would you ever want to start it with little to no oil pressure to the top end ? That is exactly what is happening when you hear that little rattle when you start it after changing the oil & without pre filling the filter , it might only be a 2 to 3 second thing until the oil pump starts to deliver oil at the correct pressure to the top end but it counts . The use of ramps that allow you to push the car off without firing it also ensures the oil pickup is surrounded by oil as the car is on level ground . The difference on some cars as to how much they rattle on startup can be huge , even when you have a filter that goes on horizontal you can still pre fill the filter if it has an anti drain flap which will stop some of the oil spilling out . Another point is if you have a car with a worn or inadequate volume oil pump , like those found on a 3v ford triton V8 , when I did the oil & filter on it for the first time ( horizontal filter ) & used ramps that I could not push the car off before firing up , it sounded like it was about to seize up , very unnerving to say the least . Now I use ramps that I can push it off & prefill as much as possible , it hardly makes a sound , proof enough for me . There are cars that you can’t prefill , like many Toyota’s that have downward facing filters , then I guess you are buggered , but you should still be able to prime oil pressure on a petrol engine by “ flood priming” in other words press the go pedal all the way to the floor , which stops it firing , whilst turning it over for about 5 seconds , then turn the key off & start as normal , this should get oil pressure to the top end & help prevent starvation without firing it first.

    What was the used oil filter filled at after removing ? Should of shown that. Pre fill it to what the old one is filled at. The filters that are horizontal just fill so the filter paper gets soaked. It is a good idea if possible since there is a period it takes the oil to go through. Since you showed the filter bottom and talked about quality, see a Ford MotorCraft filter and look inside, it looks high tech compared to others, but not really sure it is, looks very high quality though.

    Few of things noted:
    1. If one decides to prefill a vertical filter, it is not necessary to completely fill it. Stop an inch or so low and it won't slop out everywhere; 2. Funnels were invented for a purpose; and 3. If "halfway" prefilling a horizontal filter and waiting for the paper to absorb the oil, be aware absorbed oil isn't going to flow into the system until the oil pump pushes more oil into the filter. Still, any volume you can displace within the filter allows faster priming, and quicker oil pressure. That goes a long way towards protecting hydraulic lifters, and timing chains with tensioners that rely on oil pressure. The less time the engine can spend running without oil pressure, the better!

    Mine is slanted when the filter is fitted and when you pour it in to full it then goes to halfway soaking into the paper filter then i fill again to 3/4 swill it around and then fit.
    For decades i mainly did not fill it up and had no problems it just makes your oil light go off quicker but if you have fully synthetic in you are alright anyway.

    You do not need to pre-fill an oil filter for fear of causing engine damage. When you start an engine and it's at idle, THERE IS NO LOAD!!! There is no pressure on the bearings because the engine is not working to move the vehicle. The crank, cam bearings, guides etc. are moving freely with the film of oil that is trapped between the surfaces.
    The ONLY advantage to pre-filling is that you won't have to shut the engine down, wait a few minutes for the oil to settle, and then re-check the oil level in order to top it off in order to make up for the oil volume the filter holds.

  • @davewysocki9066

    All through school and many refresher classes after, It was always a good choice to pre fill the oil filter, there is a moment at start up where the empty filter is the cause of zero oil pressure, even with boundary residual oil , that moment of zero oil pressure could cause damage. So why not fill first before installation. Cheap insurance.

      You can't prefill from the outside rings. The the anti-flowback valve will stop it. While it takes very little pressure to overcome it, it seals well enough, that oil on the rim won't get past it. Air flows freely through the media, so you can easily get a 95% capacity fill through the center. that will still allow oil pressure to build more quickly, protecting timing chains with tensioners, and hydraulic lifters.

    I was taught to never pre-fill oil filters because the oil you get in an unopened bottle can be contaminated from poor quality control which can hurt your engine.
    We are talking particles and dirt in microns. You can not see contamination of that size. A standard name brand OEM oil filter only filters 30 microns and above.
    I get a FRAM premium Filter that filters 3 microns and above. Always buy premium filters and check it's filtering quality in microns.
    There is also other factors, like shop contamination from the used funnel you cleaned and used.

    It is interesting that the filters are not prefilled when it is attached to the engine during the assembly process....
    When a car is completed, a driver nails the gas while exiting the building to begin the short trip down the test track and the same for the brakes at the end before parking it on the ready line for shipment.
    You would think the manufacturer knows best for they have warranty claims to avoid and a reputation to maintain.
    I think as long as you don't load the engine on intial startup...keeping the filter dry is perfectly fine. It prevents a mess and you will never get all the oil off the chassis where it will eventually degrade the rubber bushings and motor mounts.
    Today's oil has a capillary effect that will remain on the crucial components and provide lubrication for the short time needed to prime a new filter.

    Just watched a video where an oil specialist showed in a lab why you should definitely fill the filter. Mostly if you don't, there os a measurable delay in your engine building oil pressure and that is possibly causing extra wear on the rotating parts of your engine. There is an old wives tale that the oil from the bottle isn't clean, but they showed through lab testing that was a false idea. Oil fresh out of the bottle is as clean as it gets. It doesn't seem to be a massive issue, but does cause more wear if you don't fill the filter first.

      Fun fact: A filter that filters down to 25.4 microns, filters down to 1/1,000 of an inch. The clearances in an engine are barely double that. The film thickness of the oil can be pinched to less than that, under heavy loads, allowing particles that size to make contact between surfaces. Most filters filter down to ~30 microns, allowing particles bigger than that to flow through. A 10 micron filter is definitely worth the money!
