You mentioned Tony Todd was in DS9 and TNG; he also appeared as a Hirogen in VOY, I think that was season 4, hunting a species 8472. He's also in Stargate SG-1 in S9.
For the newbies: if this movie intrigued you, you gotta watch Crusade. Additional info can be found in the "Legions of Fire" trilogy and the Technomage trilogy. Both are strong entries in the B5 universe, with the technomage trilogy imho being the second best thing besides the original show.
In answer to your challenge: • That lost B5 movie would be a goer • definitely re-do crusade, even (and especially) in an animated format. We need more Captain Lumberg. • Zathras • Zathras • Zathras So that's at leazt 8 seasons of content right there, no worries.
It's not a spoiler to point out that Capt. Lochley appears in some of the Crusade episodes. And there is at least one other excellent guest star, who is the real life dad of a series regular. Have I tempted anyone to check it out?
Justin - definitely watch Crusade, it's not bad. Like any first season there are weak eps, but there's some good stuff there too. But make sure you look up a good watch order list - TNT royally screwed the episode order for this show. If you're good at internet hunting, try to find the 3 unfilmed scrips as well - they would have been GREAT episodes. One's a Bester ep, and the season finale's a real banger too.
I *love* Tony Todd in this movie; seen him in lots of other stuff, but this is my favourite. "Don't worry Sarah, near or far, I'll keep the monsters away. That's a promise." "I promised my daughter I'd keep the monsters away... what kind of father am I if I don't keep my promise?" Gets me every time. I'm so sorry he's left us, I cried. Stoxvoxkor, you have a real warrior among you now ❤
I am now going through it again with the "Babylon 5 for the First Time" podcast (as well as last year with Medusa Cascade); I had not seen it otherwise for many years. It is a lot better than I remembered, and we can have a long argument (a la "The Prisoner") about the proper episode order.
Ironically I wrote two blogs about the episode order here is his the more brief version: brettharriscomics.blogspot.com/2022/03/crusade-follow-up-or-how-can-i-ramble.html
@@stuartwald2395due to the uniform fuck-ups (yay network interference), there is no episode order where everything fits 100%. TNT firefly'd this show harder than Firefly copped.
Suggestion for a spinoff, some more serious, some less: - Babylon 5: David's adventures in ranger school (animated kid's cartoon à la Star Trek Prodigy) - Babylon 5: Race for the Cure (the Crusade setup, but focusing on the B5 crew post-season 5) - Babylon 5: Homefront (the story of the Earth civil war, from the perspectives of the resistance on Earth, with B5 being the distant aspiration of independence) - Babylon 5: Hold the Line (the story of the Minbari war, with Sinclair as focus character) - Babylon 5: Entil'za (Minbar 1000 years in the past, everything that happens after Valen's arrival) - The Babylon Project: And So It Begins (the attempts to build all prior Babylon stations, climaxing in the disappearance of B4) - Babylon 5: PsiCorps (a whole show modeled after the corps is mother, the corps is father, with Bester as main character and following a storyline where sleeper agent Talia is released) - Babylon 5: The War Within (the telepath war, plain and simple)
For the newbies who do want to watch Crusade, as a first one myself, I rather liked it. From my point of view, there are some episodes of Crusade that are good. RIP Tony Todd. 😞 am Stov'a'cor accept your character Kern. As his spirit makes his way, let the stars shake with the cries of his comradesand, and family, warning the dead beware.... beware.... a Warrior is coming. Qu'pla
If some of your newbies really enjoyed this film, maybe it's worth watching Crusade on a volunteer basis with those who want to? :D I got into B5 in 2020 and watching Crusade at that time was... very interesting sometimes. I think it could make for a good drinking game to take a shot every time something is said that could have been said in 2020.
Had Crusade been airing on a network that actually supported it, it would have survived. B5 was a ratings hit for TNT, but not in the way they wanted it to be (as you mentioned - everyone tuned into B5, and then tuned out). It was still niche, but for original programming on cable in 1998, it was great. TNT apparently didn't want any references to B5 - as close to zero references as possible. Presuming what I've read about is true, Crusade's cast may have looked more like A Call to Arms (a mix of veteran B5 cast and new cast), but that was a non-starter with TNT. Apparently Tracy Scoggins was able to slip by as a "cast member," probably due more to an oversight than anything else or because she was only on "TNT episodes." "No B5 connections" is presumably also why the uniforms were changed to the awful Bellhop uniforms. Can't use the Earthforce uniforms, "those are from B5"... A Call to Arms exists as a decent bridge and unofficial pilot, but I'm wondering if TNT had been more receptive to the entire franchise, not only would the back-half of Season 5 been constructed to better set up the Drakh threat in the inevitable spinoff, but that A Call to Arms would have been a true introduction to the series proper with an immediate lead-in for the ship and crew to start up, instead of a slight soft-reboot (a la SeaQuest) where most of the cast is replaced and everything is re-introduced (War Zone). If A Call to Arms served as the proper pilot on a network that was receptive to Crusade, the segue from film into "Racing the Night" works well - the bulk of the cast/characters are established, and the story doesn't need something like War Zone to re-introduce the plot of the movie and set up everyone, the crew is already out in their search.
Actually, I think you guys misunderstand a little bit. The fun for us, your audience and you reacting to Crusade is is not that we are eager or unwilling to hear you dog on it, which you rightly probably should. The fun and the interest is in hearing you talk about what you think it could have been. Because you guys finished all of B5, and now all of you together have opinions as qualified as anyone else's.
I think that hatred is bad. I think that hatred is unhealthy. I am a person of a particular religious persuasion, and I think that hatred is inherently sinful. That said, I hated the music. At least I'm not hurting anyone and saying that.
RIP Tony Todd
Of the Crusade episodes, I would recommend viewing Racing the Night.

Bummed I haven't been able to keep up with your podcast folks. Still love what you've done here.

I like Crusade. Yes there was network interference but if you compare those 13 episodes to the first 13 filmed episodes of B5 it holds its own.

Tony Todd played grownup Jake in Season 4, episode 2 of DS9. It's one of my favorite episodes of that series.
Tony Todd, genuinely great man and fantastic actor. Fave among the sci fi community. RIP Tony.

Hilarious knowing listening to this that the announcement turned out to be a new Patreon lol
I had cats named Galen and Dureena

I'm not trying to be a pest you guys, but it doesn't seem to make too much sense to talk so much about crusade and not just watch the thing. LOL.
