Best version of the first aria I've ever heard. Mr. Klaus Mertens is at such a next level; the words are clear, the notes are crisp yet it feels so natural like a poetry. Even at more than 70 years old! This will always be my favorite - one of the finest moments in musical performances.

Bach didn't have a contrabassoon in Weimar or Leipzig, but he did have a full-sized organ, not the little _Truhenorgel_ ("chest organ") used in this performance, tuned to around a=465 (which is a 1/2 tone above a=440 and a whole tone above a=415). In this performance, they're using a baroque contrabassoon to compensate for the lack of a full-sized organ tuned to either a=415 or a=465. Presumably, they can't use the organ in this church because it's tuned to a=440. Baroque oboes and bassoons are designed to be tuned to a=415 (1/2 step below a=440) or a=392 (whole tone below a=440). For compatibility with the tuning requirements of baroque wind instruments, they'd have to transpose the organ part down a 1/2 step to play it on an organ tuned to a=440.

Wow what a memorable performance by all. I even enjoyed the larger choir. Particularly wonderful is the inclusion of the Baroque Double Bassoon which even on my tiny laptop speakers really enhanced the Stringed Bass. It came through really well. Congratulations too to the Oboe da Caccia player for his obbligato - Suberb. Yes another fantastic RUclips recording from Trogen which I will return to many times in the future.

Too bad the contrabassoonist can't hold his breath long enough to play without a break the whole note that's tied across 6-1/2 measures. The part he's playing was meant to be played on an organ, not a contrabassoon.

This ensemble is using a contrabassoon to compensate for the lack of a full-sized organ tuned to the proper pitch (a=415 or a=465). Bach had no contrabassoon and didn't need one because the venues where his cantatas were performed had full-sized church organs. The only organ this ensemble has is the little _Truhenorgel_ ("chest organ"), which lacks the muscle of a full-sized organ. The church organ in this venue is tuned to a=440, which is incompatible with the tuning of baroque wind instruments.

@@larrydean4433 Ah, the triumph of ignorance. But you missed the point, which is that "all this trouble for a few notes" is to compensate for lack of a full-sized organ tuned to a pitch that's compatible with the tuning requirements of the winds instruments. FYI, a full organ already has the equivalent of a contrabassoon built in (16' bassoon stop).

@@herrickinman9303 Of course the double bassoon was added to pick up the bass, it was still a great touch. It did not seem like it was any trouble for the musician. A wise addition. Thanks for posting. You guys are making such beautiful music. If I may, though, these breakneck speeds won't do. The first choral, for example, is a facsimile of battle. It's armies marching, battalions lining up, advancing and retreating strategically. It's the clear-eyed witness of the determination and the terror felt when you are engaged with an enemy that could overcome you at any moment. This vision which the music is meant to convey is muddied away in this rush. Bach is sternly ministering to his flock about how we must be unified and ready and wide-awake in the fight against perdition. All this cannot be conveyed by a whirlwind! You really have to slow down and trust the music more. Really, I think we need to see Bach's coloring as more descriptive than imitative and we must learn to perform it so.

Never heard of Blitzkrieg? All jokes aside, I like this tempo. In fact I relish diversity in the interpretation of Bach's works. If everybody agreed on the same tempo and expression, and played accordingly, the world would become a sorry place. And Bach's genius manifests itself in the fact that there are so many ways to make his wonderful creations 'work'. And I find Herr Lutz's musical choices always inspiring.
