    My wife struggled with and finally died from bipolar disorder for 50 years of our marriage. I listened to Bach for hope and patience and often thought of the faceless millions of God's children who faced sickness and death and heartache and found hope in J.S. Bach. And he comforts us today. Thank you.

Schumann once said: Bach's long chorale prelude on Schmücke Dich, O liebe Seele restores to me any and all things that were ever taken from me. I've forgotten the bwv#, but it's part of the collection of "Great 18" (chorale preludes for organ). My faith (quasi-knowledge is that good folk like your 'main squeeze' and my Stefanie DID "adorn their souls with gladness," that is, died well. Of course people may dye of bipolar disorder, quicker than of cancer. Is it a lack of imagination or of empathy? I lost a girl-friend at the age of 24 by suicide, another in her 30ies, in her bipolar phases she made love to anyone and got killed with a knife by a casual lover.

      When Mozart died, Saint Peter welcomed him to Heaven and took him to meet God. As they slowly made their way, Mozart was thrilled to hear the heavenly sounds of what he thought was the most beautiful music he'd ever heard. It was Heaven's choir and orchestra. Thinking this, he met God and God said unto him: "Oh, Mozart! I am very pleased you're here. You will be in charge of the ensemble." And Mozart, a bit confused, responded: "I would be most honored for this position. But, do I deserve it? I mean, shouldn't Bach be the capellmeister?" And God looked at him and said: "I'm Bach."

    In this cantata Dorothee Mields, of course, is hors-categorie. But all performers are in top shape. This is the most deep, dark and profound (and in the end most joyful) performance of BWV 21 I know and the choice for Bach's first version (from Köthen) enchances the dramatic effect on the highest. This performance has become my favorite and made me realize that in this early work of Bach it is already all there: the St. Matthew Passion, the Easter Oratorio and the B Minor Mass . Thank you all so much!

What an irony that the people of Leipzig during his lifetime didn't realize WHO they had in their midst.

      I am so glad you love Bach as much as I do, and this splendid performance! But "Cantata 21" is not "his 21st". The numbers in the Bach catalogue are not chronological in Bach's life, but , the case of the cantatas, numbers assigned by the Bachgesellschaft in the 19th century as they incrementally published their now classic (if antiquated edition), i.e., ##1-10 were the ones people wanted to see published most/first. As the Bach catalog numbers (BWV) are the same, for cantatas, "Cantata, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21" is how it is usually stated, or "Cantata 21". In the case of Beethoven symphonies, "Beethoven's 5th" really is the fifth one he wrote and published. Mozart's Köchel numbers are chronological, too, but not Bach BWV's. BWV 21, believe it or not, is fairly early, but so is BWV 150 (Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich). Bach did not number, or even publish, his cantatas.

    I'll never forget the first time I heard the concluding choral fugue of this work. I wanted to grab all my musical friends and say, "Just listen to this!!" You'll notice that the text was used by Handel in the last chorus of Messiah (in English, of course: "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.") Both Bach and Handel used the text in the same way, beginning with a chordal declamation and then proceeding with a fugue at the words "Blessing and honor, glory, and power . . . etc." ["Lob, und ehre, und preis, und gewalt . . ."] Someone, please correct my German. I can't find my dictionary right now--plus, spell check kept wanting to "correct" my German with English words!

      Hi Mitch! Nice to coincidentally see you here, and this cantata is pretty new to me but it's already becoming one of my favourites! The permutation fugues in here (I think there are 3 of them!) are absolutely legendary!

      @@MitchBoucherComposer Absolutely! The fugue at the end of the first part is a simple but excellent permutation fugue and the fugue at the end of the cantata has an extremely unique theme for Bach with a rising arpeggio!

      @@Nooticus what is a permutation fugue?

    • @Nooticus
      @Nooticus 3 года назад

      @@lakkfatt2321 From wikipedia:
      'Permutation fugue describes a type of composition (or technique of composition) in which elements of fugue and strict canon are combined.[39] Each voice enters in succession with the subject, each entry alternating between tonic and dominant, and each voice, having stated the initial subject, continues by stating two or more themes (or countersubjects), which must be conceived in correct invertible counterpoint.'

    Ascolto spesso questa sublime cantata per il suo bellissimo primo motivo, che mi immerge in un raccoglimento interiore profondo.
    Ma al centro dell'opera il chorus 6 è per me un gioiello, una pietra preziosa incastonata, dove si trovano forza e tenerezza armonizzate alla perfezione.
