      Lot of the reason it isn't is because it became very political. The FA going out of their way to try and fix matches in favor of clubs they want in the finals and it turned a lot of people off of it

      I don’t know.That third round tie at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground is the game that EVERYONE was saying if United had lost could have finished him off at Old Trafford.The media were out for Fergie’s blood before that game.Also if Stevie Coppell hadn’t been injured in the early 80s with a knee injury that finished his career, he might well have been part of Alex Ferguson’s squad for this game.Big Ron always said losing Stevie Coppell so early was a tragedy, as he was so highly rated,and I believe Fergie was a big fan of his too.Fergie had also been a big fan of Gary Bailey who was also finished by a knee injury, and he’d offered him the post of goalkeeping coach, but Bailey had declined saying he wanted to go back to South Africa,the country he’d grown up in, although he’d been born in Ipswich(his dad, Roy had won the title in 1962 with Ipswich when Alf Ramsey had been their manager).

    • @philmitchell91
      @philmitchell91 3 года назад +13

      This is why I haven't watched Premier league football in years. Same fancy stadiums with trash atmosphere and diving cheats in every game. Football was ruined a few years after this final when the Premier League was born and filthy foreign money began to pour in. The only semblance of real football with real fans is in the lower leagues.

    • @daviddavies3637
      @daviddavies3637 3 года назад +4

      @@philmitchell91 Absolutely. I was watching this and other games from the era and teams were generally much more attack-minded. Always looking for that killer pass or setting wingers off the moment they had the ball. Now, it's all about possession and way too tactical.
      The recent super league BS is something that UEFA themselves have to take some responsibility for. They are the ones that lined the pockets of the bigger clubs at the detriment of clubs from smaller leagues. The Champions League has been a disaster for football ever since it stopped being a league for champions. It's already a European super league.
      Bangor City's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid is still talked about in these parts. We'll never see games like that again.

    Hughes' goal at 10:25 could be seen as a key turning point in football history. Had he not scored there, Palace would almost certainly have gone on to win the cup, leaving Manchester United empty-handed for the fifth straight season. I am pretty certain Alex Ferguson would have been fired by United during the summer in that case.
    The upshot? Well, I think Liverpool's 1990s decline would still have happened - that had pretty much already been set in motion by the traumatic effects of the Hillsborough Disaster - but without Ferguson around, George Graham's Arsenal would probably have become the dominant team of the early Premier League instead of United. Whether Graham would have still have been fired for corruption a few years later, who can say? But there is every possibility that a dominant Arsenal would have had no need to hire Arsene Wenger either. Given the impact Wenger had on player approaches to fitness and diet, his exclusion might have meant the English game today being more like the game of the 1980s.

      interesting theory , except Arsenal capitulated in 91/92. Leeds who won the league that season capitulated in 92/93. And runners up to United in 92/93 Aston villa also couldn't maintain in their next season either. It does boggle my brain to think how different history would have looked had Fergie lost this game and got the sack. I remember Palace had a couple of good seasons too after this one, Norwich also looked promising. But no one looked like perpetual serious challengers to United's dominance before Kenny Dalglish brought Blackburn up. Who knows, maybe Fergie would have been asked to manage Blackburn after he lost his job at United.Also another thing I thought of was that Leeds would have kept Cantona, so maybe it would have been Leeds and Blackburn in the first half of the 90s

Three things- John Motson spotted that Gray was fouled in the build up to Utd’s first goal which the ref missed. What was Nigel Martyn rushing out for when Hughes scored?, as O’Reilly put him off enough. If Nigel has stayed on his line he wouldn’t have scored. Lastly, in all the highlights I have watched, they never show Gray missing a sitter from 8 yards out, unmarked, unchallenged very late on. Oh what could have been… forever a fan. Replay was awful from both sides, could have gone either way and we never wore that shocking wasp kit again

    I honestly don't recall if I've seen this vid before or commented on it, but I have to say that this is a day that lives in my memory without equal, because I certainly watched the game! From a motel in Geelong, in Victoria Australia, in company with my wife and kids, and her oldest sister and husband, live and uninterrupted. Because that day I had been invested with my MBA, the pinnacle of twelve years of part time study whilst bringing up said family and dragging them across Oz in pursuit of my career ambitions. I was also a prestigious prize winner and luxuriated that evening and into the early hours in a haze of pleasant satisfaction. The game was just electric. A Palace win would have been a total fairy tale and I still think this was one of the great finals, although it gets talked about very little. The replay was a typical anti-climax but detracted not at all from my enjoyment of the big day. Just say 1990 to me and I'm immediately transported to that halcyon night. Oh, and of course the semi was a bit special too...

    no penalty shootout?

    • @swordbeach4709
      @swordbeach4709 3 года назад +2

      Not in those days. English clubs were still banned from European competition so the Football Association milked the FA cup for all it was worth with replays. The second match was boring compared to this.

    • @martinodoni8943
      @martinodoni8943 3 года назад +1

      @@swordbeach4709 That's not the reason. The FA Cup had always had replays throughout its history before this time, and the idea of bringing in shoot-outs to settle things on the day hadn't really occurred to anyone yet. FA Cup "sagas" with two or three replays to decide a tie were an integral part of the competition.
      When English clubs were dominating Europe in the 70s and early-80s, there were no shoot-outs in the FA Cup either. Look at Arsenal v Liverpool in the 1980 semi-final; it took four games to settle the tie, and that was fully five years before the ban.

    Not a fan of ferguson,Wembley then had great character,great game for Ian right,its a sad reflection on the game that lifetime working class fans can't afford to go to games,I know most have made their peace with it,but man united sold their soul for the cash,that's not football.

    MU tinggal kenangan.
    Ngak bakalan akan bwrsinar lagi jika masih di latih Erick Tan Haq.
    Jika pemain ada incaran ETH lebih baik menghindar dari pada di rekrutnya,tetap karirnya bonyok..
    Banyak sudah contohnya.
