    As a longtime Spurs fan I have to admit that Paul Gascoigne made two X-rated tackles for which he should have been sent off. First, he's got his foot up and followed through into a Forest player's chest, and second, he's scythed an opponent down on the edge of his own area with the ball gone. Today, these would both have merited a straight red.

    Referee Roger Milford gave the worst Ref performance I've ever seen in a Cup Final. That Gazza tackle on Parker within the 1st 2mins didn't even get a yellow card, that should have been the fastest red card in Cup final history. Then the iconic tackle on Charles that wrecked his talents to a large extent also didn't get a red/yellow card??? On a brighter note, Princess Diana looked absolutely beautiful on the day. King Charlie is a total plank for not seeing what the rest of the world could see, yet he wanted Camilla. Takes all sorts. Great final though, remember it well as a youngster.

  • @johncasserly4504
    @johncasserly4504 10 месяцев назад +3

    Most entertaining cup final by a mile. The fun starts before the game. The entire stadium forgets that there is another verse left to sing in "Abide With Me". Princess Diana is being wolf whistled by the Forest and Spurs fans as she waits to go onto the pitch, much to her amusement and Prince Charles displeasure (he gives a good stare to both sets of fans). Gazza kisses Princess Michael's hand and she grabs onto her handbag in case he is going to rob it and do a runner.
    And then of course Gazza's tackles, (short of Eric Cantona's Kungfu kick into the crowd at Crystal Palace), I don't recall a more reckless tackle than the first one in English football, he actually kicked the Forest player in the chest with studs raised. The referee was happy to have a quick smiley word and give a free kick as opposed to immediately sending him to the line, leaving Gazza to repeat the dose and deliver a subsequent leg breaker that unfortunately injured himself as opposed to breaking a fellow professional footballer's leg.
    Red card today?? Gazza would be banned for a season and the referee would be relegated to officiating Sunday league football.

    The Forest revisionists are notably quiet on the foul committed by Lee Glover in the wall for Pearces free kick, the goal Lineker scored wrongly disallowed for offside, and the failure to send off the goalkeeper for the professional foul on Lineker for the penalty, which was then saved.

    So many memories, with Lady Diana, a poignant historical footnote. Diana and Brian Clough, icons of the era. They represent the best of British values, whereas Venables possibly the worst, and I say that as a Tottenham Supporter. On the field, Stuart Pearce and Des Walker continue the theme of heroes versus villains. On field know-how undid Clough's managerial principles. Maybe a blessing becomes a curse as we've not lifted this trophy since.

  • @jmurray2018
    @jmurray2018 8 месяцев назад

    My observations.
    Wow video quality was really bad back then, they allowed the Managers to come onto the pitch ?
    Every tackle I witnessed I expected a free kick and a yellow card. The game was played by men back then.
    I had a hard time trying to work out who was who so used to names on shirts.
    Paul Gascogne was mentioned as a £6 million player… I wonder how much he would cost in today’s money?
    Paul Gascogne looked quite overweight in fact all players don’t look like the Gazelle’s we have today.
    Paul Gascogne should have been sent off or carded at least and did you notice the ref keeps patting players on the back?
    Why didn’t the forest Keeper get a card for that penalty?
    Goal keepers can pick up passes from their players, wow.
    Tottenhams passing was really bad and I had no idea how much time had been played.
    Gary linkers offside goal was onside.
    Vinny Sammways and Paul Allen seemed to be the Paul Gascogne of the game more than Paul Gascogne
    I got to see what Princess Diana looked like. Speaking of looks Paul Walsh looks like he’s in a rock band not in a soccer team.
    Gary Lineker and Kean are playing - not commentating.
    You can only hear Spurs fans and who were the presenters in the studio?
    And Tottenham were clearly the better team
    I imagine if Ange Postacoglou was in charge the team would of passed better, been fitter and pulled more hamstrings than the entire league for the next 20yrs oh and of Course they would of won the games 6-1 with 4 goals coming in 90+ mins

The quality of football on show is so different to what we see now as well. Giving the ball away for fun here. And how was that a "good" penalty, according to Trevor Brooking?
