At 2-2, when Barry Davies says "What an amazing day this is!", he's referring to the fact that earlier in the day, Crystal Palace had beaten Liverpool 4-3 in another fantastic game. Both live on BBC.
@@craiggerrard5117 Indeed. First time that both had been shown live, as Coventry vs Leeds in 1987 and Liverpool vs Forest (the rescheduled game) in 1989 were shown live too
@@davidhuggan6315 I'd forgotten about that. I seem to remember that the Coventry v Leeds one was shown 'as live' after the match had started though. I could well be wrong about that though.
The greatest FA Cup semi final day bar none. Liverpool suffer a shock exit in a absolute classic then this brilliant encounter. Say this as an Everton fan.
Matt Colley nah it means fuck all which is a bit of a shame cos it used to be huge. Still nice to win I’m sure but we all know that teams couldn’t really care less when they get knocked out. These days it’s probably entirely possible that if a manager is having a horrendous season in the league, even winning the cup mightn’t save his job..
Agreed, Robert. This was the greatest ever FA Cup semi-final day. Because, before this, the semi-finals never live on TV, and not long after this, they started being on separate days.
It cannot be overstated how the results of a couple of games would determine the course of history for the next two decades. If Oldham had won this Alex Ferguson would not have been the united manager at the start of the 90/91 season. Think about that
Happy days oldham athletic were a joy to watch in their day, went to both games and must say oldham were very unluckily to not get to two finals in one season, saying that latics could be losing their league status soon, how very sad that would be,at least I was there to witness the good days.
The 3 main games of this year's FA Cup were the most exciting of any era... 4-3 (Palace v Liverpool) and this straight after! Followed by the Cup Final... The most exciting Cup Final only ran close by ECL (2005) and this month's CRAZY World Cup Final.
United went on to win the cup and Denis Irwin. Oldham played some attractive football under Joe Royle. I wish they'd stayed in the Premier League forever.
What a season. Then Italia 90. Joe Royle was great. So funny, especially as a pundit. Anyone else remember "the reacher." They took the proverbial on Fantasy League Football.
Oldham were magnificent that year, even Alex Ferguson proclaimed them team of the season. So rare to see such cavalier no fear play game after game, you almost forgot they were the underdogs.
Liverpool strolled to the title after the hillsborough disaster, even as an Evertonian, they were the best side by a mile. Oldham had two cup runs on the back of a plastic pitch. Don't care what anyone says, you play and train on that surface everyday it gives that team a huge advantage.
How much better were FA Cup semi finals when played at neutral venues back in the day? There when the FA Cup really meant something, till the obsession with European qualification, coupled with the disgusting FA greed ruined it.
The benefits of a plastic pitch. Utd got Irwin and we took Milligan - he was absolute garbage for us. Like Blackburn, all the fans coming out of the woodwork when they did OK for a few years. Which club has the least fans now? Like Luton and QPR when they had to play on grass they soon disappeared.
Latics took their plastic game to grass and defeated every team in the top tier during their three-year stay in the top division. Plastic pitches demanded accurate Passing. watch the game again muppet!!...
one of the best footy days ever 1st ever live FA Cup semi finals back to back on BBC1 WHAT A DAY with the replay there were 16 goals & 16 DIFFERENT goal scorers !! imagine paddy powers odds on that !
Sad to see Oldham exit the Football League. Great club, history and fans. Hope you’re back soon. Derby fan in Oz.
16 goals in the 3 semi final games including the replay 16 different goal scorers, I remember it like it was yesterday.
Great stats.
I remember these matches well great games all of them.
The afternoon I fell in love with footy.....42 now and remember every moment of both semi finals.

Yes, it was the first time that the semi-finals had been shown live on tv and they hit the jackpot. Two amazing matches.

@@craiggerrard5117 Ah you may be right with that. Of course no social media in those days to spoil the result :-)
I didn't think, in terms of drama, things could get any better than Liverpool-Place game. Boy was I wrong!
The greatest FA Cup semi final day bar none. Liverpool suffer a shock exit in a absolute classic then this brilliant encounter. Say this as an Everton fan.
Remember watching this game as a kid on TV. FA Cup Semis were really big games then. You can feel how much crowd enjoyed the goals.

I certainly did enjoy the goals. I'm an Oldham fan and I was there.
@MR MISTER True but only big clubs win it

Wow went to this game and the replay was at Maine road always remember was during the strangway riots. Two unbelivable games.
Remember going this game and the replay ,,, then the final and replay , great days !!!!! UNITED !!!!!!!!!
Great game. Gutted for Oldham after they lost the replay.
I was there in 88

Totally agree with you.
They thrashed Aston Villa in the quarter finals, who went on to finish second in the league that season.

I was there fantastic game up the latics
Anyone remember the ticket prices? £2 for the first match and £7 for the replay. Where was Martin Lewis when you need him?
Started an Oldham career mode on fifa. Got them to the championship, thus far
If it was real life, the Oldham chairman would have fired you after 15 games
Bryan Robson, my hero, im 46 so can also thank oldham for giving us q certain denis irwin xx
2 absolutely amazing semi finals palace v Liverpool, yhen this, football was amazing x

Commenting on a game played on grass & needing a pen in order to get a draw at Goodison on grass. Sounding very bitter 30yrs later 😉

Isn't it nice without the VAR.
Even now it makes me mad how shite jim Leighton was....just an awful keeper, what dod fergie see in him??
Just one is a long line of "awful" Scottish goalkeepers! 😆

Even though my Liverpool were stunned (and deservedly so), by Crystal Palace.
