He had everything left foot, right foot, heading ability, pace, shooting from all angles and ranges chips over the goalie. A super talented player. Black strikers weren't a normal sight in English football as today there was a lot of prejudice so he was being held back that's for sure.

One of the best Palace teams ever (if not the best), so many quality players, remember they just moved up but then wrecked Div 1 for a while bf the team broke up, Wright and Bright were a huge media sensation then, they were so fun to watch and lots of TV episodes on both of them, they would face off each other later in classic Gunners-Wednesday double cup clashes

I’m a United fan but kudos to Ian Wright for such a brilliant individual performance. Talk about impact players, he really did change the match after he was introduced into the action.
It was a brilliant first game ~ a real rollercoaster of a ride that ebbed and flowed from first to last. In the replay United were just too strong and well organised, Ferguson having made the now fully justified decision to rest Jim Leighton, with his stand-in, Les Sealy, having a brilliant match in which he made a couple of superb saves which kept Palace at bay.
From here on in United never looked back and it proved to be the catalyst for a very long and successful era.

I am Wright, scoring that first goal, then running away, arms wide open, while mouth gapping wide open is one of the most iconic moments in FA Cup history. I THINK only 3+4 years earlier, locked up in a prison cell (admittedly for motoring offences). Then a painter & decorator after that. But never have up the dream.
I do believe I'm right in saying, Bobby Robson later admitted, if he'd STARTED this game, it might have persuaded him to drop Steve Bull & take him to Italy 90 instead.
    Truly inspirational.

Shame Leighton never learned his lesson about how Ferguson could be after Aberdeen's win against Rangers in the 83 Scottish Cup Final. Then he could have maybe gone to Celtic or Rangers, or a different English club and had longer at a top level than he did.
