Being an angler of 60+yrs, I must thank you for being the most informative/helpful angler on RUclips (along with Jamie Hughes). Your hints/tips have certainly improved my catch rates as a pleasure angler, which obviously adds to the enjoyment of just being on the bank. Thank You so much for sharing these improvements to presentation, which, no matter how much you pay for rods/reels/poles etc., the bait presentation is the most important factor in angling. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I tie my hair rigs in exactly the same way. But having big clumsy fingers I used to struggle holding the hook securely without it moving while whipping the shank. So I got myself a fly tying vice to hold the hook securely for me and that made tying my hairs massively easier and a lot more accurately. I hope this tip might help some people with the same problem I used to have make their hair tying less stressful . Great vid Jon as always!

I have to say, it's the best and clearest detailed instruction video I've seen.
I had just started experimenting with the larger loop.
The spike in the end of the wafter presented the bait perfectly.
I will have to give these a try

Excellent John, I tie mine exactly like yours except I use a figure of eight knot instead of an overhand knot because it appears neater if not stronger. I also use a Preston loop sizer to regulate the loop size depending on the size of hook I’m tying. Thank you for your help. 🤓

This video has been a great help. I'm not brilliant at holding fiddly things but I enjoy fly fishing also and tie my own flies - I find the use of a fly tying vice is also helpful with tying hook lengths etc. They can be found quite cheaply on eBay etc and if you struggle with dexterity can be a great help.

Another way that I have been using for years: I make a hair with a loop, slide it into a piece of heat shrink tube, put the hairline through the hook eye, slide the heat shrink over the eye and heat it.. The hairline is now slidable to the length whichever you want, depending on the bait size.. A button on the top part of the sliding hairline and you can put a few turns around the hook to secure the hairline and you are done..

Nice video Jon, ever since seeing you using a big loop it's all I use now, I like using the quick stops for big worm's or two or three worm's it's great for greedy carp, Tench and Bream, the perch and big roach also muscle in, I use it on the pole most of the time very rarely with a feeder

I particularly liked the fine braid hair, i had an ancient black spider dacron in 1lb bs it would be quite an edge with a bayonet on the end for wafters! and a d rig with 8lb maxima...gotta try it...Thank you.

Wouldn’t the soft hair rig let the carp eject it without indication or self hooking ? Great video please more😊😊
