Colors I used of Louet Gems Fingering in my finished cowls:
Lighter-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Cream, Steel Gray, and Seafoam Green
Darker-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Goldenrod, Burgundy, and Pewter
Instructions for knitting the three-colored swatch:
(Before starting swatch, name each color - “Color 1”, “Color 2”, and “Color 3”. It won’t make a difference which is which, they are used and striped with each other. Remember these color names, because they are referenced in the cowl pattern.)
Using Color 1, CO 30 stitches.
Knit 9 rows (5 ridges).
Row 1 (RS): K across all stitches
Row 2: K 5, P 20, K 5
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 once more (4 rows total), then switch to Color 2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 a total of 7 times (14 rows total), then switch to Color 3.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice (4 rows total), then knit 10 rows (5 ridges).
BO on RS.
Information on things you'll see in this video:
The 16" circular needles I use in the video are by Knitter's Pride, I use both Novas (metal) and Dreamz (wood).
The crochet hook I use is from a Waves set by Knitter's Pride:

The bulky yarn I used for demonstration is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.
The striped sweater I'm wearing is store-bought. :)
The nail polish I'm wearing is by Julep, color "Lupita".

Seriously Staci, you are the best online knitting instructor. Thanks for all you do to help us struggling knitters out here!
Thinking the same
What a stylish cowl! You've given me a great idea for a few Christmas gifts for next year. Thanks for the pattern and all your helpful tips! I'm becoming a better knitter because of your excellent teaching.
You’re a knitting wizard! And I think I love you. 💕🤗😂 seriously though. Learning tons from you, thank you!
Honestly, everything you design is gorgeous and so fun to knit!
The best knitting videos on the internet
I am so impressed with your tutorials. The very best I have seen.
Another great vid Staci. I just love your teaching style and tips and tricks. I have become a much better knitter due to your channel.
You are still the best teacher ever. I started knitting my very first pair of socks when I found your tutorial on RUclips some time ago. I must have knitted twenty pairs since then. Thank you once again!
Your smile and humour is really contagious and I love it. And you still look great by the way!
I am so inspired by your enthusiasm and passion. Now I know exactly what I’m giving myself for Christmas ths year!
I am not a great knitter (I can do knit/purl ribbing and that's about it) and have a very difficult time understanding patterns, but this tutorial was absolutely terrific! Very easy to follow along and your teaching style is very clear to understand! This cowl is gorgeous and I can't wait to try my hand at making one!
You have an infectious love for knitting that is obvious in your videos. You are a great teacher; I have always enjoyed your sessions. Most times i can't wait to finish a project I'm working on to start one that you introduce...It's contagious and I enjoy every moment. I can't thank you enough for your time, skills, ability to make me learn something foreign and passion for what you do. With much appreciation...
I love this cowl so much.....I've made it several times! Thank you.....:-)
I love this cowl! I will definitely be putting this on my to-do list. Thank you for your wonderful instructions!
Love your colour combination!
Smart,smart, smart.

Carolyn Breen Morton - I found that it's easier to use DPNs when unraveling the provisional CO, because it's a tight fit around the small circumference using circulars. DPNs give you more angles, and you're able to pick up the new stitches more easily.

Thank you for this and for the kitchener stitch chant! I never got it before. It makes sense now!
Thank you for this video. I have just finished my first project with a Kitchener stitch!
Brilliant. I’ve been knitting forever, but boy have I learned so much from you. Thank you, thank you 😻
I just started my sixes and threes Cowl and I am super excited! this is my first time working with fingering weight yarn. I don’t think I can fail because Staci you’re such a wonderful teacher!
You make it look so easy and your explanation is very clear and understandable. Thank you so much!
I am doing this with Berroco Comfort & I am loving it! Thank you so much for this video!!
I'm loving this so much! thank you once again for another great tutorial! ;)
You're such a great teacher. Thank you. ♡
Just bought Gems Fingering yarn and I am excited to begin this cowl. I watched your video on Saroyan and used some yarn I had in my stash (want to try and another type yarn on my next one) & loved how it turned out. Your videos have really helped me try new stitches and patterns. Thank you for all your videos and keep them coming>
Thank you very much! you are a great teacher and your videos are wonderful!
Staci: Thank you for your great helpful tutorials. My yarn for the "Threes & Sixes" cowl
arrived the other day and I started mine. Thank you so much. I have also started a Log Cabin Blanket using my worsted wool stash. Donna
Great tutorial. You make it look very easy and your explanations are very clear. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! This a great piece, perfect for a Christmas gift. I'll give it a go, hope I can work it correctly.
Thank you for taking the time to think of all the possibilities so you can show us the best and easiest ways. Plus the tips and tricks are always useful (like the way to calculate how much yarn will we need for the cast on, I hadn't see that anywhere else)
Really, Thanks a lot.
i'm beginning to like the idea of double knitting my scarves. it makes a warmer, more finished looking product.
I love this pattern. Thank you for sharing.
This is positively stunning! Thank you for another great video.
This is a really great video. Now I really understand jogs and how my stripes are happening. Thank you
This will be my Spring project to wear with my denim jacket! Thanks!
thanks for your pro tip on how to adjust the colour change on the first stitch while making stripes
Added to my favorite bucket, looks so stylish!
I'll try Louet yarn for my next project. Thanks for sharing
One time my roommate's grandma called me a smart ass because when she asked if I crochet or knit I answered "both"
LOL that made my day
Just literally LOL
Love it
I was always scared to death of losing my place with the Kitchener till I realized I could leave it in mid-stream, then come back to it, look at exactly where my yarn was coming from, and understand what was the last stitch I’d made. Just study what each stitch looks like as you’re making it, and you’ll understand where you are in Stacy’s mantra, and where you want to go next. (“Reading your stitches.”)
This next thing may just apply to me, but with my first attempt at Kitchener, I stupidly did not realize that the yarn must always be *underneath* the two needles (I was a really new knitter). I ended up with everything on top, and a really sorry looking seam. As I said, it’s probably just me. But keep your yarn under the work.
At any rate, I now *love* to do Kitchener (and EZ’s sewn bindoff). I think I enjoy the switch to a sewing needle after the knitting part is done.
Thanks for all the great learning techniques in this project. I did not know how to reach you to request for you to do a video on "Sewing or seaming up large gaps that are created in certain projects. For example, I knitted the " January Baby Cardigan", you have live stitches that you are going to use to start knitting the hood, which creates this large gaps at the shoulder. I don't know how to sew them up neatly. I would appreciate some tips. Thanks for all your awesome videos. My favorite is how to weave in your ends.
Janie Oreilly - this video will help you...it is specifically for correcting gaps in socks, but the technique is the same, and you can use it on your baby sweater: ruclips.net/video/uS8xRMvLzfg/видео.html
VeryPink Knits Thanks for responding so quickly! I will try that trick.
Oh, Stacy.
Another case of comprehensive Tutorial!
Thank you for your talent.

Honestly, I'm a bit late to this party for this one, but I'm just in love with the look of the example cowl, I'm wondering if you would be willing to share the numbers for the chunky variant of it. I'm normally in the 'less is more' club when it comes to stitch side, but the sample just looks so warm, cozy, and squishy!
Genius! Thank you!
+Charleen Cobb - I'm unable to reply directly to your comment (most likely because of how you have your settings), so I hope you see this. If you are working the technique as shown, my guess is that you are working kitchener on the "back" of the tube, with the purl bumps showing as the right side of your work. Make sure your needles are lined up so that you see knit stitches hanging from the needles. If you set it up just as I show it in the video, you'll be set. It's difficult to explain - if you still aren't getting it, I recommend you show your work at your local yarn shop, and they can help you one-on-one.

That chant is gold in and of itself. I'm not even making it and probably won't for a while but I find it sort of addicting to just say. Is that weird?
Beautyfull Job , it looks a little dificult but looking a few more times this video Ill maybe get it. Thank u Blessings
Thank you for the pattern and the video. One problem though is the ladder that is forming when I start a new round no matter how much I pull on the working yarn to tighten the last and first stitches. I even tried slipping the first stitch of the new round but it makes no difference.
The look of the ladder there will improve when you're finished knitting, and you wash and block your cowl. :)
Staci, I love, love, love your videos! Thank you for being so available to all of us and our questions. My question for this particular pattern is that it calls for any fingering weight of yarn. I am using a lace weight yarn (Holst Garn - titicaca 400 meters per ball). I think I will have to double the yarn, will that be about the same as fingering weight? Thanks so much for keeping me busy during our shelter in place order! Stay safe :)
You can only give it a try by knitting a swatch, then checking to see if your gauge (stitches per inch) matches that of the pattern. But since this isn't a fitted garment, a slightly different gauge shouldn't make that much of a difference in the size or yarn amount.
Is there a video on how to change color in the round for purl stitch and carry up the yarn?
The cowl is beautiful and I'll definitely knit it, but I absolutely love your cardigan. Where can I find the pattern for it?
I always list things (like sweater patterns) out in the video description field...you'll see there that the sweater I'm wearing is store bought.
I tried 3 different times and took out trying to do Kitchener as demonstrated. It always looks like I purled the seam instead of knitting it. I will give it one more try after watching a "Kitchener in the round" video, in which there is no "set up." Hopefully that works. I put too much work into this scarf to have the seam look so sloppy.
Thank you very mach, very interesting!
I only have A US 8 16 inch circular needle. How would I adjust the cast on for this pattern?
This question is not specific to this video. You have several sets of knitting needles. How do you choose which set to use with a particular project? Thanks
I think I can do this! Thank you!
Love this video - thank you so much!
Would love a set !!!
The completed cowl is very Gryffindor & Hufflepuff. I am sure Harry Potter fans would love this. :)
Hello. I was referred to your videos by a local knitting club. I have never knitted before but I am eager to learn... which video do I start with?
Great - you want to start with the Basics, here is that playlist:
ruclips.net/p/PLF004A1CE2AB1B12E
Then once you get a bit familiar with those, this scarf tutorial is designed to be a first project:
ruclips.net/video/UMadNYkKLiI/видео.html
I'm not sure, but is that the entire pattern in your notes, because I want to try and knit this cowl now? This is my first project and I don't know if it is the entire pattern. I have my own yarn, but it is different from the one in the video.
Louet, the yarn company, has the rights to this pattern and is in charge of distributing it. You'll need to contact them for a copy of the pattern. (This is the only pattern of mine set up this way, I own the rights to all of my other patterns, sorry for the inconvenience. )
If you have interchangeable needles, could you use odd needles for the kitchener stitch? As long as you make sure that your only working with the correct size?
Elise Morrison - yes, but no...you run a huge risk of stitches falling off the ends of the short needle tips, and unraveling. You can, however, use short needle tips if you keep most of the other stitches on scrap yarn while you kitchener a few, then slide a few more on to the interchangeable tip (off the scrap yarn) as needed.
If I don't set up, what's happens or look like after I finish it?
Hi Staci, I’m so sad: it is not possible to close the row (as you show on video ) with 66 casted on stitches with 40 cm (16 inch) circular needles.... far to tight.... what can I do? Dona
This video should help you: ruclips.net/video/HIYuTQ1l_Xc/видео.html
Do you turn the tube inside out before you seam it together to weave in your ends or do you just leave them loose? would they perhaps not unravel or are they totally protected because they are inside a closed tube?
No - the ends are pulled in with the right side facing, with the ends inside the closed tube, as you said.
Staci: What kind of needles did you use on the cowl? What I have in circulars I found
was too tight & had too switch to double points.
I like short tips too. Thanks Donna
Donna Walker - I used Knitter's Pride 16" circulars. It isn't unusual for the knitting to be tight around 16" circulars for the first few rows. If it is still tight after the first few rows, chances are that your gauge is too tight, and you need to go up at least one needle size.
Why does my kitchener look like a purl seam? What am I doing wrong?
Hi. I am knitting a sweater and I want to do a mobius twist for the neck but dont know how and cant find any patterns for it. Do you know how?
No, sorry, I've never seen that done on a sweater before.
Hello! This is one of my favorite cowl patterns because it is so simple to follow and looks beautiful and sophisticated. Would you happen to recall the dye colors for the blue green and yellow one on the Louet yarns website? Thanks!
I did this tutorial a while ago, and I don't have the dye lot numbers anymore. But the colors I used for both cowls are available on my website here: verypink.com/2014/12/17/sixes-and-threes-cowl/
The colors I used in the Lighter-Colored Cowl: one hank each of Cream, Steel Gray, and Seafoam Green

Hi! Really enjoyed your tutorials~
the Louet yarn that you recommended in the video. Can it be used for warm weather? I'm learning to knit and I would like to use yarns that are warm-weather-proof so i won't die from self-suffocation. ^.^
+Katherine A. Chan Ho - the Louet yarn is wool...a scarf like this is intended for adding warmth in cold weather.
Store-bought striped sweater?! Blasphemy! LOL Only kidding...how long will the coupon code be available? Thanks in advance.
I love your channel and would REALLY love to win!
Yay, Hogwarts scarves !
You saw it too!!
🇧🇷💗🌷Lindo obrigada 🥰
Staci I mistyped in my message below. I tried to purchase the yarn for the listed patterns and at checkout I was also being charged for the patterns. Thanks for your help.
Sharon - the patterns are free with yarn purchase. Please contact Louet directly, they can help you.
Staci, I have some yarn I want to use for this but it's 137 yards sport weight with 6 stitches/inch with #3 needles. If I reduce the cast on by 10 stitches will I still come out with a cowl that is an acceptable length and width as the original? Thanks
I can't answer that - you'll need to swatch, and figure out how much length you'll get based on the amount of yarn and your gauge.
Thanks for your quick response!
Staci, you have this cowl and the Matterhorn cowl listed as free patterns through Loual with the purchase of yarn. However, I tried to purchase both patterns and there was no place to enter a code at the time of checkout and the pattern price did not clear out automatically. Can you give me some guidance on how to get these patterns at no cost please? (I would really prefer the Matterhorn if I can get it. I already have a cart with my yarn choices.)
Sharon - the patterns are free with yarn purchase. Please contact Louet directly, they can help you.
I always wonder if patterns with suggested yarns account for knitting a swatch gauge. Does it account for only one swatch or a few to get the gauge right?
It depends on the pattern/designer...if you're in doubt, contact the designer directly. I my patterns, I always leave plenty of extra yarn, enough for a couple of swatches, for sure.
@@verypinkknits Thank you so much! Your videos are great for a beginner like me! Feeling confident as a new knitter is easy with the VeryPink Knits youtube channel and Podcast
Thank you for your tutorial. Love your sweater. Do you have a pattern? I’d love to knit together it.
No, sorry, that is a store bought sweater.
@@verypinkknits ok. Thank you.
For the provisional cast on, do you need to use the same weight of yarn? Is it okay to use a worsted weight with fingerling, or a DK weight? I don't have extra finger weight yarns in my stash.
It's fine to use a heavier weight of yarn - I pretty much always use worsted weight, even if I'm using sock weight yarn.
Thanks!!
Would I be able to knit this cowl on DPNs if I can't find the circular needles in the right size?
Yes, you can knit this on DPNs instead of the circular needles.
Hi I started making this cowl back in February I believe and I'm just about finished and I really want to make another one. I noticed that I can't order the yarn from Loute now. Does anyone know what happened? The yarn comes in so many gorgeous colors but retailers don't carry every color, like the website did🙁
Louet recently stopped selling yarn directly on their website, but I've updated the links in the video description field to the shop they're sending folks now: skeinshop.com/products/louet-gems-fingering-weight
I can't believe you are wearing a store bought sweater! 😱 The horror! Lol
Staci would you find it funny if I said I am looking at this cowl and thinking "I can so do that in Tunisian crochet" because whenever I have tried to knit, I'm all thumbs?? Oh but give me a Tunisian crochet hook and I am off to the races! LOL
Whenever I use circular needles my work is at a slant. So annoying. How do I get it to work up straight?
It should block out straight...wash the item (according to the directions on the yarn label), then straighten it out when it's wet and allow it to dry.
VeryPink Knits thank you so much. I will try a small sample and try that. Also, your videos are excellent. Very easy to follow.
skyler white !
I was so confused why mine wasn't looking right, you didn't include that u used the stockinette stitch you said "just knit "
livvy divvy you do just knit so idk what you're confused about
Hi Staci, I just started this project and am into about 15 rows in and there is a lot of curling. Will that get better? Is it because I am doing nothing but knit?
In this pattern, the ends are seamed together, so any curling will be stopped when it's seamed.
VeryPink Knits Thank you!
Hi! I ordered 3 skeins of that yarn and the pattern and I got it in the mail but no pattern I'm really confused on how I'm supposed to get this can you help? (:
Cheyenne Crosby - you can call or email Louet customer service, they are really great. Here is a link to all of the ways to contact them: www.louet.com/page/contact-us
Thank you for replying so quickly I will do that!
Can the provincial cast on work with garter stitch? I suppose not lol
+Jessica Buero - yes, you can use a provisional cast-on with garter stitch. The stitch you use after the cast-on makes no difference, the provisional cast-on is worked exactly the same way.
Mine do not go away! There is a big piece of yarn when I knit with the magic loop! How can I get rid of it? : (
So Soap - you should probably focus on really tightening up that first stitch of the first round, then also focus on the first stitch of the next few rounds. Using a wool yarn (like I use in this video) will also help, because wool is more forgiving with tension issues than other fibers, especially cotton or acrylic.
Thank you so much! I 'm gonna give it a try!
Hi how do you get the pattern you wrote very nice
Rhonda Wise - visit my website here for more info:
verypink.com/2014/12/17/sixes-and-threes-cowl/
Can i post my work?
Any other yarn can we use ? If yes what kind or which one ?
anjali sharma - the only way to get this pattern (for free) is with Louet Gems Fingering yarn purchase. Details on getting your pattern are in the video description field, just below the video.

I just wanted to let you know that you demonstrate carrying your yarn----which is evident on the wrong side of the cowl. Then you later show us the cowl----that it is completely reversible. It can't be completely reversible if you carry your yarn when changing colors... unless I am missing something.
Yes - it is possible. The cowl is knit in a tube (as you see in the video), so the wrong side is inside the tube, and never seen, making it completely reversible.

👍💥✨💥
I cant knit with circular needles :(
heeeeelp !!!
Sorry, this pattern is designed for circular needles (or dpns)...I recommend practicing on circular needles - they're really handy and used for a lot of patterns!
@@verypinkknits unfortunately, you are correct. A lot of designs use them BUT I've tried several times and I just cant seem to do it, the wires drive me crazy and I cant move them around like I want to. I guess I have to try 100 times to get used to it
