Perfect for a beginner! Practice really does make perfect! I've been knitting and crocheting for 50 years off and on. My neighbor taught a group of us to knit as young children and my grandmother taught us to crochet around the same time. Love both knitting and crocheting!
Jennifer, your tutorial is very helpful. I've been a "Hooker" for about eight yrs now. Haven't crocheted in almost seven. Tried knitting, but I couldn't see it. Now, you've convinced me that it's possible. This will be my first knitting project. I'll get my needles and yarn this wk. I'll keep you posted.... Thank you for this insightful tutorial. 💜💜💜
I could sit here and listen to you talk and knit/crochet all day. Oh wait, that's what I'm doing! Thanks Jennifer for sharing your soothing voice and mad skills!
Thanks Jennifer for doing this video. I'm a crocheter for many years and just started teaching myself to knit. I am really loving it, I tried continental style for a bit, but I changed to English style and now I'm learning to knit in the round. I'm making a 2 x 2 ribbed cowl and it's coming out so pretty :) Please continue to share knitting projects with us, I really love your teaching style :)
My mother taught me basic knitting when I was probably 10 or 11, and I took a fun “mini course” at my high school when I was a teen. Then...no more knitting for me until a month ago, and suddenly, I’m knitting like crazy! It’s been 4 decades, but the muscle memory is still there. It’s like learning a foreign language, and vocabulary words are still deep inside my memory.
Yay! This is the first thing I’ve knitted in 30 or 40 years and the only other thing was a beginner scarf I guess in high school! :) For the cast on or maybe the earliest stitches I had to consult a couple of other videos that showed it more slowly. But I love the Cowl I haven’t finished it yet but I feel confident in the finishing off part. I’ve already bought some new yarn, and I’m going to make more!!! Thanks!!!!
Thank you this is my second knitting project and was a great way to really practice simple stitches and how to hold my yarn. Your tutorials are very user friendly😍
Great tutorial! I started knitting 3 days ago with some acrylic yarn I found around the house & used chop sticks are needles- I made a cowl for my cat to start practicing haha
Hello Jennifer. I've been watching your videos now for about 3 or 4 months (as long as I've been crocheting). I've pretty much learned from watching you. Abd now after seeing this project, I'm all gung-ho to go get some knitting needles and learn to knit because this cowl is gorgeous, love all the colors, and you made it look so easy 😊 My mom is a knitter and she tried showing me a few years ago how to knit, but I just couldn't seem to grasp it. But after seeing this tutorial, and seeing up close and slow how to do the knitting stitches, I'm confident I can now learn. Thanks for always making amazing tutorials 😊
Thank you, I could finally finish a scarf I started for my mum 4 years ago 😅 Tutorial was so clear, both video and audio, so simple to follow even for a complete beginner like me! 🙂 Thank you so so much ☺
Yes, I started knitting when I was 8 and I've been knitting for 3+ yrs. Knitting is fun and you should try it. If you think knitting with needles is to hard, trying loom knitting. I do both. Thx.
I tried this for my first knit project. You are such a great teacher! I started off a bit wonky but straightened out in the end. I figure I will wear the good side in front. Ha ha. I am glad I did it but definitely still a crochet girl!
Thank you! This was my first attempt at knitting and I just finished my cowl! Very easy to follow tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to show us how to do it!
sorry to be so offtopic but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot the password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Johan Emerson thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Thank you i just started knitting 2 yrs ago it has been slow going but with god help i am getting better uou see i am legally blind in one eye and. Totally blind in. The other but i have learned i just praynthat it will improve so others will want. My. Work. Sp i cam. Bless the lord. And others thanks you did great
i dont know how to knit but i do crochet however you have made it very easy for me to learn so im gonna knit this im pretty sure im going to do well thank you for this turtorial god bless you.
The Cowl is pretty but I absolutely cannot knit I’ve tried I can’t cast on at all I’ve tried until I cried even if I could cast on I can’t use 2 needles at a time I guess crochet is what I do. I have done some Tunisian crochet a long time ago it’s about as close to knitting as I’ll ever get. So I can’t wait for your next crochet videos now that fall is hear💕 At least I appreciate your video and admire people who can knit and crochet 🙂
There are SO many ways to cast on. The one she is using here is called long tail or butterfly. It is very common but i find it difficult as well. I use an extremely easy method of casting on, I don't think it has a name because I can't find one. I've seen a few videos that show it (look up "simple/easy cast on") but i still think my way is easier..maybe I will post a video on it soon (:
Jeanna Kelly it took many tries for me, a crocheter, to learn to knit. I’d been crochet for over 20yrs and always wanted to knit but continued to fail. I made up my mind last year that I would keep going till I learned and finally did it! Keep trying! My first love is still crochet tho lol
if you are having a hard time using two needles at once. get 14" inch needles and tuck the right one( if your right handed) under your armpit. it holds the needle steady and you can do it! also you could try the backward loop cast on. it' really easy. good luck!
I have now learned to knit I think my problem was not only casting on but the whole idea of being afraid and the concentration of knitting using both hands. Now both hands make shawls do KFB a simple bind off make the Cowl like in the video.👏👏👏
First time making and I have to say the instructions on the video were absolutely perfect. Do you do crochet instructional videos too. Am loving this. Thank you so much.
Hi ! Thanks so much for taking time to explain and for this video. I started to knit this with a different wool. Just curious, how long can it take for a beginner to finish this project? A stupid question but would love to hear.
Hello Ma'am! I know to knit, and I really love the self-stripped yarn, or the Caron Cake yarn! This inspires me to knit! Thank you for all your great videos!! I do have one question--why must the tail be long? Just curious.....I found out why. Again, thank you.
Thank you for your video, I enjoyed it very much. I am just curious how long did it take you to finish the project? Also what was the amount of stitches you casted on and how long did you make the cowl?
i just want to know how you have such neat and straight edges. like how do you end each row, or start each row, so that the edges are nice and straight
@@djmelotte8220 cast on and space out the loops out like they would be on the finished piece then stop casting on when it is the width that you want it to be
Hi. I’m planning to make some tutorial videos on crochet, and you’re my inspiration. But I’d really like to know how you place your camera and some behind the scenes.
I'm probably just going with 40, but does anyone have suggestions for how many stitches I should cast on if using US8 (5.0mm) needles and a thinner yarn (it was already open so I don't know its size/weight)? Will it still look ok if I use this size needle and yarn?
Wait. What hook size did the yarn ball recommend? Cause your hooks look really big for the yarn. Im beginner and have 5mm as my first pair of hooks. I know crochet well and wanted to learn knitting this year.
Hey, I’m making this scarf now. Could you be more specific about how much slack to leave when we are about to bind off? I want to make sure I reserve enough of that last color at the end.
Do u have any suggestions on how I can not have so much tension in my cast on's? Its alittke more difficult for me cause I am left handed. But im pretty good with adapting as I had to do it all my life. Lol but any suggestions would be great.
One option is to use a different cast on method (check All Free Knitting and other resources for alternate cast-on methods). Another method is to cast on to a larger needle and then knit over to your gauge needles.
Can you demonstrate the continental or European method of knitting? I've seen it and I believe I can do it better. Also, would you please zoom in a little closer with your camera? I would love to see these closer ( I find myself trying to zoom in for a closer look) 😉.
"For more advanced knitters..." I always want to do a provisional cast-on and graft the edges together to make the seam as invisible as possible. Still haven't gotten garter-stitch grafting down pat, though...
Didn't you say that the slip knot counted as the first stitch ?? Wouldn't that make 2 stitches after the first cast on stitch ?? That's what I count. Great video and very easy
I learned how to crochet with you I am so scared to nag because it looks so confusing so cast on is the same equivalence to crocheting doing a stitch right. What if you are going to do a blanket how do you get it so wide with short needles and the other thing I was going to ask you what if you run out of yarn how do you add yarn to the project it’s a little confusing do you have a video up if not could you make one please I want to really try and do this I just got a push past the fear laugh out loud

Great tutorial, very easy to follow, will use as a reference as a beginner.
Thank you for this instructional video. I have referred back to it and have made two cowls now.
Thank you finished my first cowl scarf!
This will be my first project and I am excited.
Best knitting and crochet videos!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have always wanted to knit a cowl scarf. Just ordered 10 balls of yarn from Shoppee!!!!
This is going to be my first project thank you :)
I am just learning and really appreciate your videos!
I just finished this project, thank you!
Can I use needle # 10 (US 10) to make this cowl? If yes, should i change the number of stitches or should i continue with 35?
Thanks much!!

Amazing Video!! Great for beginners!!
Great teaching skills, thank you ❤️
Great video. How long should the piece be before bind-off?
Can we make a cowl with 120 yards for an adult size? Or would it be too small? My yarn weight size is 4
Wait. What hook size did the yarn ball recommend? Cause your hooks look really big for the yarn. Im beginner and have 5mm as my first pair of hooks. I know crochet well and wanted to learn knitting this year.
Can you do these with 4 and half needles ?
I💖it is very nice where did you get the yarn
I can't seem to hold it correctly so that the tail doesn't shorten. Any tips? Thanks. Great video! First timer here.
Can i use sharpened pencils ????????
Do you also teach crochet?
Hey, I’m making this scarf now. Could you be more specific about how much slack to leave when we are about to bind off? I want to make sure I reserve enough of that last color at the end.
What type of yarn is this?? Wool?
Thank you. This is very helpful
You are amazing!!!
Can you tell me the brand of your needles please.
I should have picked up a self-striping yarn, but I didn't : (( *Could you do a video on how to change colors manually? TIA :))*
What is the length and width for the scarf please
May I ask why you use the straight needles?
Likewise. Have fun🎉.

Mi Pecado hey! It doesn’t matter how long it is, it’s your preference! You can make it really long, or really short your choice!
You're a good teacher, but I feel that the long tail cast on is hard to learn for a beginner. Is there an easier method to cast on?
