This video provides an insightful comparison. I often find that while tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity AI have their benefits, I've found Myko Assistant excels in delivering more precise and organized results with just an email request. It’s interesting to see how different solutions tackle academic inquiries.

Don't forget what you are judging it on are the by default Concise results you can click to get more Detailed version, plus now Copilot available with GPT4 enabled. I've been using Perplexity instead of Google for 2 months now as an Answer Engine. What makes it better than Googling is you don't have to scroll past the sponsored SEO results then loading page getting hit with ads, popups & tracking cookies. Search engines will go the way of the dodo.

I played around with Perplexity and found out that one can set many different ways of searching. The default setting is "Internet" but one can change it to "Academic", "News" or even "Wolfram Alpha". The search settings can be changed by clicking on "Internet" (for most people it'll show Internet since it's the default setting) at the bottom left of the field in which you type in your search query, question, etc.

Hi. Can you suggest which one to choose?
Which one would be better in researching; for example, sending a big list of people (either as a text file or as text) from which one tells me who of all listed (for ex. public people) plays tennis? Chat GPT, Perplexity, or some other?
    Thank you!

I haven't had time to play around with it, but could it be possible to ask it a question and then specify to search on only a few sites?
Example: "how does postmodernism challenge traditional notions of truth and reality." + "Only use text from google scholar, etc."
OR, perhaps there is a way to restrict what domains it can access? That's assuming its hosted locally.
Personally, I like the "source citing" feature, seems like a step it the right direction. But that gets me thinking, I wonder if it could deliberately leave out a reference link 🤔

      Dear quadren4,
That is a great suggestion! I will try your suggestion to limit the answer to google scholar. Why didn't I think of that!?! But your suggestion about domain restriction probably won't work because it is not accessing the domains. It is only referring to what it was originally trained on. But I should try it anyways... maybe it will begin to confabulate since it always likes satisfying the user prompts. But maybe this domain restriction prompt will be possible through the internet plug-in that they are releasing to their paid PRO users.

      Mike

      Dear quadren4,
I just asked Perplexity this: "Tell me about postmodernism, but only access and refer to documents that have been indexed through Google Scholar. Please use highly ranked articles."
It works!!!! All of the articles are journal articles. But I do not know if they are highly ranked or relevant. In my estimation, these are not really the key or best articles to use. But then again, I did not ask it to find the most pertinent or most cited sources. I will try it again later.
But thank you! Thanks to you I might have to re-do the video and update it.
      Best,
      Mike

I would suggest you conduct the same experiment once again but this time purposely choose your "Academic" as the type of question you are making, that way it will only use scholar sources only instead of things like Wikipedia. I believe the results would greatly differ from what you got in the video.
Here's an example about "Explain postmodernism", which I asked it myself with the Academic option enabled.
"Postmodernism is a cultural and intellectual movement that emerged in the mid-20th century as a response to modernism. It is characterized by a rejection of the grand narratives and universal truths of modernism and a focus on the fragmentation and plurality of experience. Postmodernism has had an impact on various fields, including art, architecture, music, film, literature, philosophy, sociology, communications, fashion, and technology
    1
    .
Postmodernism is difficult to define because it encompasses a wide range of ideas and practices. However, some of its key characteristics include the rejection of the idea of a single, objective truth, a focus on the multiplicity and diversity of experience, and a tendency to blur the boundaries between high and low culture
    1
. Postmodernism also emphasizes the role of language and discourse in shaping our understanding of reality, and it often employs irony, parody, and pastiche to challenge traditional forms of representation
    1
    .
Postmodernism has influenced various fields in different ways. In literature, for example, postmodernism is characterized by a self-reflexive and experimental approach to narrative, often blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality
    2
. In architecture, postmodernism is characterized by a rejection of the functionalist approach of modernism and a return to historical styles and ornamentation
    3
    .
Overall, postmodernism is a complex and multifaceted movement that has had a significant impact on various fields. Its rejection of grand narratives and emphasis on the plurality of experience has challenged traditional forms of representation and opened up new possibilities for creative expression."
It used www.semanticscholar.org/ as a source for the results.

      Dear @user-fg6mq3dg3d,
Yes, thanks for the suggestions. I did go and update the review by doing exactly this. I selected the academic tab. Thank you!
      re: semantic scholar
I think that the program is smart to cite this portal; however, the main feature of the service is to provide short summaries and abstracts for the item you are searching for. So, in this regard, the service keeps hyperlinking short blurbs to one another (i.e. chains of abstracts) and I am not sure if that really gives the user or the program a "deep" understanding of the issue under examination. It might if given in enough massive quantity but I'm not sure. It does help in giving a snapshot, but a snapshot without intellectual context could mislead a user or eventually lead a user away from their initial query.
      Best,
      Mike

How is this different from just doing the same search in Google? Where is the "AI" at?

      Dear Billy,
I do not think you can "google" within a specific document. Google also does not reply with semantic language answers. Have you been able to get Google to do this? I would be very interested in the prompts you are using in Google. Can you share?
      Best,
      Mike
