Using a Comedy Stand Up Routine as an Example:
LEVEL THREE PRIMING:
Please act as a stand up comedian and a joke-writer with more than a decade of experience entertaining audiences of all ages. Here is an example of a joke style that I like:
" INSERT REFERENCE CONTENT "
Now, please write me an original stand up comedy routing in a similar style.
LEVEL FOUR PRIMING
STEP 1: ANALYZE RELEVANT CONTENT
I am going to provide you with a joke from a stand up comedian’s live performance. The joke was spoken in front of an audience and recorded, then transcribed. As a result, there are some repetitions and other verbal nuances in the transcription that you will need to navigate. Please thoroughly characterize the joke type and its component parts so I have a good definition of this joke type for later use:
“INSERT JOKE TEXT”
STEP 2: CREATE A TABLE
OPEN A NEW CHAT AND CREATE A TABLE WITH THE JOKE COMPONENTS CHAT PROVIDES AS COLUMN HEADERS.
PROMPT EXAMPLE:
Please create a table that breaks down a stand up comedy routine into the following key elements where each of these key elements is a column:
Relatability, Exaggeration, wordplay, repetition, satire, rule of three, absurdity, call back, audience inclusion.
Fill the table with 10 rows of data where: relatability = "funny family situations"
STEP 3. NOW THAT YOU'VE DONE YOUR RESEARCH, LET'S WRITE!
OPEN YET ANOTHER NEW CHAT AND PUT YOUR SAMPLE JOKE INTO THIS CHAT AND ASK IT TO STORE THE INFORMATION FOR LATER:
I am going to provide you with an example of the humor I like. It comes from a stand-up comedian’s live performance. The joke was spoken in front of an audience and recorded, then transcribed. As a result, there are some repetitions and other verbal nuances in the transcription that you will need to navigate. After you have read the joke, please confirm you have fully ingested the material by responding, “Read,” and we will proceed to the next step:
“insert joke text”
STEP 4. PROVIDE THE CATEGORIES AND DATA FROM THE TABLE CHAT MADE IN STEP 2.
Now that you have a sample of the style of humor by which you should write, please act as a professional stand-up comedian and a joke writer with more than a decade of experience entertaining audiences of all ages. Based on this style of humor please write an original stand-up comedy routine with the following components:
Relatability: Awkward family situations
Exaggeration: Crazy family vacations
Wordplay: Travel-related puns
Repetition: "It never fails"
Satire: Travel industry
Absurdity: Time-travel mishap
Audience Inclusion: "Been there?"
STEP 5: SELECT THE EDIT BUTTON AND MAKE CHANGES TO THE CATEGORIES AND DATA INPUT IN ORDER TO SEE DIFFERENT ALTERNATIVES

Thank you so much. It seems you are competing for the greatest compliment ever. You may have won! How do you most use Chat GPT? Are you using GPT-4 or GPT 3.5 ?
This is the new standard for explaining why the joke was funny.
Dear ChatGPT, please act as an expert joke writer with a decade of experience and tell me why the Gaffigan hot pocket bit is funny so that I might laugh at it. 😂
I start each chat by asking it to act as a prompt engineer. Then I input my question, and it gives me a better way to ask.
That’s a great approach. I also made a video on Prompt Engineering that may be helpful in that regard.
@LawtonSolutions Thank you. I'll check it out!
I have used ChatGPT a few times, and read about Gen AI and prompt engineering before, but I never heard the word 'priming'. Looks like an interesting concept.
It’s great... My favorite way to use ChatGPT. Best of luck with priming and please let me know if you questions.
this is super awesome! i can already see how anyone with patience and diligence can apply this prompt formula for optimum results, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Well done sir🙂!!
Thank you. Glad you liked it. More videos on ChatGPT are scheduled soon.
@Lawton Solutions Fantastic job! Just of out curiosity did you pick the key elements for your table? I'm looking forward to keeping an eye on your content; keep up the good work!
Very nice of you to say. Thank you.
Here's the exact prompt I used to get the table:
"Please create a table that breaks down a stand up comedy routine into the following key elements where each of these key elements is a column:
Relatability, Exaggeration, Wordplay, Repetition, Satire, Rule of three, Absurdity, Call back, Audience inclusion.
Fill the table with 10 rows of data where: relatability = "awkward family situations"
Here's a different prompt I used as well:
Please create a table that breaks down a stand up comedy routine into the following key elements where each of these key elements is a column:
Introduction, Initial Observation, Exaggeration, Absurd Suggestions, Enlisting Friends
Fill the table with 10 rows of data where: Introduction = "Owning a pet giraffe"
So, to answer your question, you can choose a key element that you'd like to remain constant in the resulting table... or you have have ChatGPT populate the entire thing you. Hope that helps!
This was a great video, great stuff...
Thanks very much. What's your favorite use-case?
@@LawtonSolutions For now it has been setting up multiple tone of voices in the same chat, and proof reading / rewriting a hole newsletter on that same tone/voice. As the 2 newsletters have different structures, I might have different chats with different priming. Still figuring out.
Makes sense. Good luck with it and let me know if I can help.
This is an excellent tutorial and the second part is also awesome! Thank you.
I believe there is an issue though with the fact that the example on priming is too narrowly focused. While it is more than clear on how a stand up comedian would use this method, I couldn't see any other applications of it.
So any suggestions on other uses of the method or, even better, some more videos with these applications would be very helpful!
I used the variable approach for planning my weekly meal schedule. I put in variables for likes, dislikes, allergies, budget, etc. Then, each week I can ask it to make me a new set of meals… I like to use themes: Italian, Mexican, French, Mediterranean for the week. Then chat gives me a shopping list, and cooking instructions for the week.
Great feedback! Later this week, I'm releasing another video that provides a scenario for better communications with those who you interact frequently. I hope it's more tangible for you.
Meanwhile, one of the ways I like to use variables is for my workout routine. I get bored doing the same things at the gym all of the time so I have ChatGPT create different schedules. Variables include Workout Type: Cardio, HIIT, Weights; Current injuries: Shoulder, ankle; Exercise goals: Weight loss, Muscle gain, endurance; Workout frequency... Resting intervals... You get the idea.
What are some of your hobbies and I can send you an example?
@@LawtonSolutions That is lovely. I am looking forward to watching that! In my opinion a video that would focus more on the principles of priming and less on specific applications would help us the most. Once again thank you for your excellent tutorials. Really appreciate your work!
@@yololiving5342 Could you share the prompts you used for that please?
@@LawtonSolutions I do a lot of yoga. Is there a way I can get a varied routine for that?
I believe ChatGPT can now let you upload files, including CSV files it can read. So you can put those tables into a spreadsheet, and add your own rows over time, and use the same prompt including the file to get better and better results as you add more data to the spreadsheet.
I know you can integrate ChatGPT into google sheets with an extension but I’ve yet to try a CSV file in a chat. I’ll try it out and get back to you.
At this point, especially if you're using the free version, you must convert them to markdown format and then paste the data into the prompt. ChatGPT can create tables for you but it'll use markdown as well. However, you can copy and paste the table or matrix part direct into Excel without having to specify the delimiters, etc.
Do you have a link to the chrome extension you are using ? to YT summarize ?
Thanks
Go to the google chrome extension store and search for: "RUclips Summary with ChatGPT and Take Notes"
It has a red logo.
What a good looking man!🤩
I hope this helped the yoga studio!
All this is usefull in ChatGPT 3.5?? Thanks
Yes, it works for ChatGPT 3.5 and beyond.
Let's say the comedian create more videos in the future and you have more samples (video transcripts) to add to the chatgpt now, to fine-tune it further. How to do that?
Ah, that's the beauty of using variables. Simply go back into the same chat and tell GPT that you need to add another new variable via the following:
"I want you to store another example of "X" in the variable
[Variable 03].
[Variable 03] = "populate this with the example information"
Then, the next time you want Chat to create content, use the following (which would NOW include Variable 03)
"Now that you have ingested these variables, please act as an expert "XYZ" with two decade of experience. Based on the variables, [Variable 01], [Variable 02] and [Variable 03], please write "CONTENT" with the following components:"
@@LawtonSolutions Awesome let me try this and then get back here
Omfg another video talking about something every molecule has mentioned a thousand times over until my ears bleed.
Yay molecules! I hope your ears feel better.
gpt4 created the table and filled in awkward family, did you fill in the rest of that table yourself?
Here's the exact prompt I used to get the table:
Please create a table that breaks down a stand up comedy routine into the following key elements where each of these key elements is a column:
Relatability, Exaggeration, Wordplay, Repetition, Satire, Rule of three, Absurdity, Call back, Audience inclusion.

Introduction, Initial Observation, Exaggeration, Absurd Suggestions, Enlisting Friends

Please let me know if that worked for you...
@@LawtonSolutions this worked thanks.
@@warrenpeas Excellent! Happy to help.
Great video, just unfortunately the voice of the video is so weak.
Thank you. The entire video or specific parts?
Isn't it just easier to write a damn joke using what you think is funny?
You’re probably blessed with the gift of being funny!! Some of us (me, in particular) struggle. …But seriously, yes writing your own comedy routine is the best. This was just an example of how to use the concept of variables in a chat. Let’s say you want to come up with ideas for cooking meals. You could use variables to describe your likes, dislikes, budget, dietary restrictions, etc. Once you have those elements in place, you could use the same chat string for months and get great, customized meals planned.
Most importantly, what’s your favorite joke?
