What's the Difference Between a VW GTI and Golf R? | Edmunds

  • To the untrained eye there's little difference between the Golf GTI and Golf R. Under its subtly styled skin, the Golf R packs all-wheel drive, considerably more power and a more upscale interior. The GTI, however, stays true to its roots with its torquey engine and front-wheel-drive layout. So which of the two cars offers a better driving experience? Road Test Editor Kurt Niebuhr drives them back to back to find out.
    Q: What are the main differences between the GTI and the Golf R?
    A: The Golf R has all-wheel drive and more horsepower, but most of the differences setting the R apart from the GTI are subtle. For example, the Golf R has different exterior styling, different seats and a digital instrument panel. Oh, and depending on how the GTI is equipped, the Golf R can cost nearly $15,000 more.
    Q: Does the Golf R get a different engine?
    A: Kind of. The engine is the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (EA888 in VW-speak) as what's in the GTI, but it uses a different cylinder head, turbocharger and exhaust valves and has a host of other tweaks to give it more power.
    Q: What's the difference in price between the two?
    A: A basic VW GTI will set you back just over $26K. The GTI in this video, with the Autobahn trim level, cost nearly $36K. The Golf R starts, and finishes, around $40K. The one in this video has the optional dual-clutch automatic transmission.

    My 2016 GTI weighed a bit under 3000 lbs. But it's a 2 door, base model with a 6 speed. Its lighter than my mini Cooper S was on the same scale. Also, stickier tires are a must. The oem all seasons are junk. Fun, comfortable car I bought with under 14k miles for $16k in 2017. Now at over 60k with zero issues. Just like my 2010, 2006, 1992 GTIs. Take care of a car and it'll take care of you.

      I have a 2016 GTI 2 door manual, only real complaints are the "clutch delay valve" which inhibits great shifts and am surprised that no testers seem to comment on this annoying problem. Only other is the hard centre stack on the driver's side which kills your knee on anything other than a short drive.

Got a DSG since I wanted to experience a dual clutch and can say that it is awesome. The video is spot on, why get a GTI Autobahn, when you can get the R! If they did an R Sportswagen in the US, I would be drooling!

      In terms of real world pricing, the price difference between an R and a GTI Autobahn is much more than "a few thousand" dollars. I purchased a GTI Autobahn in May 2018 for about $10,000 less than an equivalent Golf R.

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

    A very fair and informative review, I'd say. I'd take issue with only one point: the oft-claimed "few thousand dollar difference" in price between comparable trims of the GTI and the Golf R. I realize that reviewers can only cite MSRP prices but in the real world I found it's not "a few thousand dollars difference." Last May I dealt with six different dealers in and around Seattle. I found only one dealer willing to sell an R on their lot for MSRP of about $41K. And that was for a single car that had been ordered but rejected on delivery. Every other dealer wanted at least $2000 over MSRP for the R. In contrast, I purchased a fully loaded GTI Autobahn DSG for $32,043 plus TTL. Considering taxes and comparing it to the one dealer willing to sell the R for MSRP that brought the difference to about $10,000.
    The R is a magnificent vehicle. And if the price difference were only $2K-$3K, I might have opted for it. But for the $10K I saved, I can add a Stage I APR tune and Michelin summer rubber and leave another $8k in my pocket. Add to that the fact that the weight of the R is like adding an NFL cornerback to the passenger seat of the GTI , that the GTI has a sunroof not available in the R (I'm in Seattle where we need all the sunlight we can get) and I just couldn't justify the price difference.
    I wouldn't quarrel with anyone who selects a R, instead, especially if straight line performance and/or tough winter driving is a personal priority but the real world price premium one pays for those advantages is far from negligible.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

      @@tomw485 I was pricing a DSG. You're correct that the R is a very popular car here in the Pacific Northwest, at least in relation to the supply available. In the Seattle area we don't have to deal with much winter snow but our winters are messy and mountain driving is nearby. AWD vehicles of all kinds are very, very popular here.
      When I was shopping in the spring of this year just as the "R" was becoming available I was told repeatedly by multiple dealers that they could get only the number of "R's" that they had pre-order deposits on. I think VW may have made some more R's available by now but the supply on the west coast is still extremely limited. Cars.com, for example, shows only one new R for sale within 500 miles of Seattle (over 300 miles away) and only seven more on the entire west coast.
      I've heard from others that "R's" are more readily available in Canada as well as back east. I suspect VW may have made more available (relative to market size) in Canada because Canadians are even more committed to AWD vehicles than in most US markets. And while the R is marketed in the US principally as a performance car I've been told by several people that its AWD is the most important factor for Canadian buyers.
      My GTI is my second. I had the last year of the MK6 (2013) built in Germany and loved it. But I have to say that the 2018 model is even better; tighter, more planted, all in all better put together, and better performing. For my driving style I'd have to say that the GTI gives me about 90% of what an R offers for about 80% of the price. As I said, I wouldn't criticize anyone for making the other choice but I'm more than satisfied with mine. Hope you're enjoying your R...I suspect you are. ;)

    I went a 2018 GTI after hemming and hawing for a year. No Sunroof in the R! Plus anyone that actually pays 36K for a GTI is a horrible negotiator. It is easily a 10K savings over the R which dealers hardly ever come down on. While I really really wanted AWD and that cockpit it wasn't worth the extra cash. All said and done, I love my GTI, a BLAST to drive around town. Plus my sunroof has been open everyday this summer.

      Totally agree. I get why the above comparison was made, but to me, I'd rather see both cars with DSGs and summer tires. A tuned GTI with DSG will easily hit 5.5 seconds to 60. That said, I'd still be driving a Golf R right now if it came with a sunroof.

    • @ReesesHistoryPieces

      @@crownr0yalonice I test drove the R for three days through turo.com LOVED it but for 41K needs a sunroof. Europe gets one, totally lame. If the R came with one I would be driving an R.

      Drives me nuts how all the "performance minded" people dismiss sunroofs. "Too heavy, too leaky, blah blah blah". The sunroof on my MK7 really brightened up the spartan interior and was bombproof despite constantly being used. Despite loving my GTI and wanting an R, I ended up in a Q4 Giulia Ti Sport instead. Car has been so good, I am forever ruined.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад +2

      Jake Reese: You're right on. Here's my experience. Five months ago I went shopping for a replacement for my 2013 MK6 GTI. The R is a magnificent machine and I thought seriously about buying one. However, after seriously consulting six dealers in the western Washington area I found only one willing to sell an R at MSRP (about $41K + TTL in Washington State of about 11%). Every other dealer wanted at least $2K over sticker. Several wanted even more "market adjustment."
      In contrast, I purchased a GTI Autobahn/DSG for $32,043 + TTL, with about $250 of accessories thrown in. In other words, about $6000 under MSRP. Altogether the difference was about what you estimated, around $10,000 taking into account savings in sales tax. I often see reviewers and others who haven't actually tried to purchase a car claim that the price difference between a GTI and an R is "two or three thousand bucks." But MSRP is not a real world price for either car.
      Furthermore, with the $10K I saved, I have more than enough money to change tires and to add a Stage I APR tune to the engine and transmission and have thousands of dollars left over. (And yes, I have extensive experience with APR's Stage I VW tune. It adds massive improvement to HP and torque and is (in my experience of about 25,000 miles on my last GTI) dead reliable.) I can't add AWD to GTI but I don't live in Minnesota, either. And since VW 4Motion is a FWD-biased AWD system, most or all of the power usually goes to the front wheels, anyway. Add in the weight savings equivalent of an NFL cornerback and the sunroof (which in Seattle is a welcome option) and I'm a happy camper.
      I wouldn't criticize anyone who decides to go the other way. And if I did track days once or twice a month I might have given the R more serious consideration. But for me $10,000 in savings was simply too good to pass up for so little gain.

I also went at the end of the month, this is typically when they'll be more willing to make new car deals happen so they can hit manufacturer bonuses. Also stonewall them when they try to sell you any dealer installed accessories, extended warranties, etc...

    In the US, the Autobahn GTI gives the option for max performance summer tires at no addition cost. The problem is if you are buying a car off a dealer's lot it probably has all-seasons unless you live in Florida or Hawaii. Otherwise its an order-only option. As far as the price difference between the Autobahn and Golf R goes, that $36K price you mentioned is MSRP but if you look around you can get it for $32K in reality. Especially at the end of the model year when the next years GTIs are about to come out. The Golf R on the other hand NEVER EVER budges on price and thats a fact. So the real world price difference is $8- 10K. Unless you need AWD, The GTI is a much better deal for road driving. (99% of drivers never go to a track.)

DSG fits the golf R beater and the manual fits the GTi beater. the manual in the Golf R felt like my manual in my 2013 beetle turbo I had. When I went and test drive one and I had just come from testing a focus RS and it made it fill even worse. I tested the gti and I did not like the DSG in it the only reason i even bothered to test drive the gti was the sells man told me they had a LSD in them come to find out after testing it was eclectic and sucked. one more thing the more you mod both car the R's time will pull more and more on the GTI DSG to DSG. if you to modify and be able to hook up in 1,2,3 gear I would go for the R if don't plan on modifying go for the GTI. I had a 400hp fwd car and you never hook in 1,2,3 and I could chip 4.

    I wanted an R and settled for a 17 GTI Autobahn. Although the car is spirited, it just lacks everything I wanted in the R. The all wheel drive, the 70hp and a better exhaust note. Sure you can add a tune and make them wicked fast, but messing with adding and removing larger downpipes is a lot of work.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

      Michael Elliott: In my experience "adding and removing larger downpipes" isn't necessary unless an exhaust note is a high priority for you. A Stage I APR tune and better tires, alone, transforms the GTI. Not to downplay the advantages of the R but I recently purchased a fully loaded 2018 GTI Autobahn for about $10,000 less than an R. The FWD biased 4Motion AWD just wasn't worth that premium for me.

      Stephen Hendricks For me it has a lot to do with Cal emissions. Unless you’ve got a good connection with a tuner friendly shop, wouldn’t a smog shop flag you for visual inspection. Granted I don’t need a smog for 4 years. Plus I don’t won’t to void what’s left of my warranty, I’ve had a strange knock, kinda sounds like a bad lifter that my local dealership says is common. So far I’ve listened to two stock 17’s that besides their normal exhaust note are quiet. A nicer exhaust note would be great, and tires will definitely be replaced, mine came with Hankook.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад

      @Michael Elliott: Can't speak for California emissions since I live in Washington. But emission requirements here, like California, are strict. I've never had any problems passing emission tests here with a tuned GTI. Nor has anyone reported a problem among the VW enthusiasts who belong to a Seattle online group to which I belong.
      As for the warranty, it's a common myth that tuning a VW (or other vehicles) automatically voids the warranty. That's not true. Unless a warranty problem can be traced to the effect of a tune, manufacturers are required by law to honor the warranty. Numerous court cases to that effect. That, of course, doesn't necessarily mean much if a dealer refuses to deal with a warranty issue and dares you to take them to court. Quite a hassle. So what to do?
      Three options. First, regularly take your car for service to a "tune friendly" VW dealer. There are several here in the Seattle area and I suspect you can find one if you're in the LA or Bay Area. I intentionally purchased my GTI from one and have had no issues. Second option is to choose a tuning company that offers a reversible tuning product. I have no experience with such a product but others report they can be reset easily for warranty work. Finally, APR, the most popular VW Tune company offers a replacement third party warranty that provides the same coverage as VW's 6 year/72K bumper to bumper warranty. The cost is quite reasonable for added peace of mind.

      Used that logic when I bought my 2018 focus ST. Couldnt find enough reason to spend an extra 6-8 grand for the st3. The interior had more bells and whistles but its not any faster than the st1 and its a sports car so who cares

      I have the autobahn 2018 gti, got it for about 32 grand with the dsg, and it was worth every penny. The reason I wanted it over the SE was because of the leather seats, fender audio system, navigation system. automatic air conditioning, and adaptive cruise control. Would’ve cost me another $8k to get the R with less features (no sunroof, no auto parallel parking, no foglights) but more horsepower and awd. I think I made the right decision with the GTI, because not only was I looking for performance, but also a lot of features.

    I suspect the tires GTI comes with aren't the best for performance, but I wouldn't dismiss them that quickly. I get amazing fuel economy, they are better than what I'm used to , regular cars, and they are probably the cheapest premium tires I found in my area in the proper size. Compared to other tires, they seem to lag behind on paper, but behind the wheel, if you drive like a normal person, they seem to be above average, no question about it. I might choose a different type at least once, but I'm not in any hurry to do that. One year later they are perfectly fine.

      The closest is probably the KIA Stinger but the GTI or the Golf R will outhandle the Kia. Otherwise, you're limited to something like a Mustang GT. But unless your "family" consists of you, your spouse, and maybe a big dog, it's not truly "practical."

      With a tune and bolt ons it can go sub 4 seconds with the DSG.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 лет назад +2

      @Omar Carrasquillo. You may be correct or at least close to 4 seconds. I'm not sure I see the point, though. (Perhaps because I'm not 17 years old anymore and haven't been for a long time.) Those mods wouldn't improve the driveability of the R anywhere but on a dragstrip. It wouldn't measurably improve time on a track other than on an oval. Using that additional power on a regular basis would quickly wear out the tires that you need to make it effective, not to mention increasing the likelihood of blowing the engine or losing control, especially on the street. All in all a lot of money spent for relatively little gain in anything other than bench racing.
      By the way, I'd argue that's not the case for the GTI. A stage 1 tune won't bring a 4 second 0-60 time, of course, but it does improve driveability and real world performance usable on the street without measurably lowering the reliability and durability of the vehicle. And as long as you stick with a DSG, you won't have to replace the clutch on an annual basis, something that's true of tuning either the GTI or the R.

    I’ve had both. My wife still has my Autobahn 2016 GTI, but I’ve sold my R. The issue is that it’s accelerator is so heavy that unless you really push, it doesn’t feel fast and when you do push, all hell breaks loose. The GTI is honestly more fun. It’s far easier to accelerate quickly by feathering the throttle. It’s not all or nothing. In every day non track driving, at 80%, it feels faster and lighter than the R. Unless you like driving at 90% all the time, save yourself the extra money.
