Who’s up for a Golf R drag race!
We’ve brought in the all-new Mk8 Golf R to go up against its older brother, the Mk7, to see which is the fastest over the quarter-mile.
As you’d suspect, there’s very little to split them when you look at the stats on paper. Starting with the Mk8, it’s powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine, which delivers 320hp & 420Nm. It weighs in at 1,551kg, and costs from around £39,000.
As for the Mk7, well it’s also powered by a 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engine, although it only puts down 300hp and 400Nm. It does weigh slightly less though, coming in at 1,483kg. This is largely down to the newer Golf R having a more advanced AWD system, however.

20 NM has an influence, but the gearbox on the Mk8 is better, which is why it performed better. *flies away*

i would say that the new golf is just as light so that Power difference is accurate or another possibility is that it is heavier but there is a 60 nm difference in torque between the two
The Golf 8R would be interesting against the 7.5R with 310 hp. The progress is definitely in the driving dynamics and the improved launch control
2nd place never looked so good🔥 MK7.5 wins on default by being sexy af, and lacking a basic tune.
New vw golf R got alot more power. Than volkswagen advertised 2021 320hp/420nm @ the engine, but in reality it's a lot more 340hp @the wheels 470nm so at the engine that's 400hp+ /500nm+ pretty close to rs3, still have a modified type r civic fk8 over any other hot hatch. Matt always has the faster car, more rigged than a fixed boxing match hahaha.

I’d definitely have a 7.5 over the 8. Looks way better, the UI isn’t rubbish and with a few small modifications and a tune would blow the mk8 off the road

The new golf needs a runway to gap the old golf. In the real world it’s just not that much quicker. 30-70 or even 80 was pretty much neck and neck. Yes it launches quicker and harder but how many times are you going to be sat at the traffic lights engaging launch control. However the biggest argument for the Golf R 7.5 is that you can get it as a 3 door! P.s I don’t own a Golf, just giving my humble opinion!

Dear matt, there are drive train losses.. and i m sure w.h.p is the factor here in addition to 20 HPs and torque.

Not sure I’d agree he absolutely smashed the old R in the sport setting from 50. He was well above 100 before the old R dropped outnof side view.
MK7R with DQ250 dsg is actually more responsive than MK7.5R with DQ381

Not at all a fan of the new interior, it's enough to steer me towards a mk7.5 and throw a tune on it. The new awd is pretty cool though...
New R has more like 330bhp not 320PS (which is what it claims). Also the 7.5 comes as 306bhp (310 PS) or 296 (300 PS) depending on whether it's been WLTP'd and you used the later. Still the new car is more powerful and probably has a better gear box. Would like to see a 7.5 mountune vs a stock 8.
Imagine how many they would sell if they did a 2.5l or even 3l engines

Golf R 7.5 2018 has 310 bhp..Golf R 7 has 295 bhp..well according to the manuals ..unless I have missed something...they dropped the bhp to 295 when they stopped making the manual and then brought in the 8 with 320 bhp..apologies if this is elsewhere in the comments..please correct me if I'm wrong..

The Mark 7.5 was always going to lose this. It’s not only giving up power and torque but also more weight due to its higher quality interior. The doors of the new 8R sound like cardboard and the dashboard quality is the equivalent of a microwave meal tray
Compare to the pre-gpf 7.5r.
The mk8 is making at least 340/350 bhp according to some. So that 320 is at the wheels perhaps. VW copying Maclaren.

@@mjspeedzone5532 I had the 7R and now have the 7.5R. They both look better than the 8 but the 7.5 looks way better IMO. Also, the digital dash in the 7.5 is amazing compared to the analog gauges in the 7. From what I can see the digital dash on the 7.5 also looks better than the one on the 8.
@@Seabass901 ya the digital dash is cool. But in alberta canada it will probably freeze in colder temps. And I drove one.. its cool. Like the gps map and stuff. But I felt like there was just too much going on. It was definatly a guage cluster alright.. a cluster of info that I dident really like. lmao.. but i still think the front bumpers look better on the 7. But to each his own.. but we both agree its better thsn the 8. Did you see that back end! I think they messed it up.

Everything about the performance is overshadowed by the fact the 7.5 just looks so sexy 🥵
That small gap can easily be made up with simple JB4 tune. It will be interesting to see what you can get out of a tuned 8 vs a tuned 7/7.5 though.
@@Seabass901 it’s going to be the same because the MK8 still uses the same exact engine. The difference will come from the upgraded diffs in the MK8, not the engine.

I have a 7.5. Would have loved to upgrade to the 8 but that interior sucks so badly. And the exterior is a step backwards.

Nope and I owned two a 2016 Mk 7 and a 2019 Mk 7.5 Alltrack. The Mk 6 had a much nicer interior and better styling.

As a 7.5 owner, I’m glad to see the stock HP improvement on the MK8 but my car looks SOOO much better than that thing. If I had to, I would get an older one before the new model TBH
your old looks obsolete with these analogic gauges... Things has changed and now is digital fully of digitaldashboards.

It's down to the wheels I think. Those mk8 alloys look terrible. They look like ones you get in the Golf Match or low end special edition. Swap them out as soon as you buy one

Don't forget the atrocious infotainment system in the new one. I've been driving a standard 150hp Golf Mk8 since September of last year and the infotainment is so incredibly buggy that it's borderline unusable on a day to day basis. Apple CarPlay craps out and displays only a black screen at least once a week, driver aids like lane assist and cruise control disable randomly every other week, the infotainment freezes or boot loops, climate control is incredibly frustrating to use, etc. No OTA update or offline update at a dealership has mitigated these issues so far. The only way to get rid of these problems when they appear is to turn off the car, get out, lock it, and then wait a couple of minutes before trying again.

@Bryce Czirr I've not driven either, but from online reviews there were some slight differences in how the 7 and 7.5 drive. If I wanted an 'R' I'd go for a 7.5. The 8 being faster is what I'd expect. Why would it be slower?

I think the 8R would also win but a bit closer. The non OPF is about 0,5 sec quicker from 100-200. But it also depends on the options the car have...
