We do a lot of Great Pyrs and Malamutes. Sometimes, shaving is the last resort. The key, is to inform the owners that once the dog is shaved is to brush them daily as the new undercoat and top coat grows. This allows for the undercoat to grow at or near the same rate as top coat so that the matting and shedding is minimized. It does not damage the hair. I wish people would quit saying that. The key… is the after care of the undercoat once it’s been shaved! Owners have to be diligent. Even if they have to hire some local kid to come daily to just brush the dog 😂 it has to be done.
@@creative2579 Slicker brush! Or even a simple one like the “Wet” Brush you can get from regular stores around town. The key is to just brush them daily as it is growing to promote the hair to regrow properly so the undercoat does not start to mat as the guard hairs (the coarse long ones) are growing.
I return to this video every so often. He is such a beautiful big dog, with a fantastic coat but it's not in the best condition, it looks dry. It is also refusing to let the undercoat loosen from the outer hair. Heartbreaking to make the decision to shave him but he needed it no matter what he is saying to you... Its great you made him feel better, lighter, non itchy, hot etc.....
I really can not understand why the viewers criticize you for shaving a severely matted dog! We all know that you do ONLY wht is best for the dog. Bless you, MaryBeth!!
Because every matted dog that goes to her usually gets shaved. If you watch any other groomer for ex girl with the dog you’ll see extremely matted dogs that she grooms without shaving.
This dog was in good shape from what I could see, the blade went through the hair fairly easy, even when wet. He should have been brushed prior to bath to remove some of undercoat and remove/trim any matting. Yes, clipping a dirty dog dulls blades, I did not see dirty water from this dog...buy new blades. Have you ever thought that instead of constantly making a dog turn around that maybe you could go to the other side of the table, especially on a big dog like this who isn't used to the table? You show a lot of frustration, if you are so worried about your health (and the dog) maybe you should not take on a dog that requires the extra effort. Brushes and combs are there for a reason, your fingers are neither of these. Anybody can shave a dog, so before anyone says anything, I was a professional groomer for over 30 years.
The people that will give you hate for this are obviously not dog groomers or they are groomers but haven’t been doing it long enough to see this type of coat in this condition. I applaud you for this decision. It’s much better for the dog.
You love your job and you take such care shaving these poor matted dogs down. You are so gentle with them even some of the most difficult dogs. Thank you for taking such care of them sending you love hugs and prayers honey❤🎉

These double coated dog take a lot of WORK. Not just water conditioner laid on, blowing. You must use more than a slicker brush. Comb, shedding comb, matt breaker, ya it takes more than a slicker.
I have watched your videos for a long time- maybe years. I took my black lab -golden retriever mix, 145 lb dog to a groomer. First, to find one was a challenge. Not every groomer will work with big dogs. We asked for a summer cut!!! I couldn’t keep up with brushing. It was a great idea!!😮😅😊

I am a grooming student and your videos are both hilarious and helpful! If possible, could you show the full after shot of your dogs in the future? Also, do you have an update on the malamute? I am curious how the poor thing's hair grew back.
I'm also allergic so I got a toy poodle a month ago and it has brought so much love and joy to me. She's all over my face with kisses and my allergies are fine!
Girl, to all those haters out there, let them groom a day in your salon! Until they deal with what you go through they don’t know. So like I always say, be like Donald Duck - just be flat footed and don’t give a £uck!! You are a great groomer and know exactly;u what the dog needs.
I so agree. Pets are not luxury items that only the wealthy should have in their oversized Gucci bags. People who go from paycheck to paycheck often take better care of their pets than themselves. Some people are having difficulties right now, as you said, but meanwhile the cost of living is up and the costs of food and health care for their pets has become ridiculous. I am not saying pets don't deserve it but Vets and Corporations could be more reasonable. They are capitalizing on the people who tell everyone else what to do. Oh, btw, my son's husky is big a loves sleeping in a small crate, (instead of her big one). Do you, Marybeth. People do like to *****! This was a tough one! Great job going with the flow!
The fact there was a fungus or something under his coat was a tell tell sign something was wrong and needed to be treated that no one saw…as well as all the matting. In this case it’s putting the dog first. Hopefully he can be inside away from high sun and the cold. Such a well behaved doggy❤
I always had to trim mine down in the summer because of hot spots. I always cut the most of it with scissors then comb then clip. During the summer she always wanted to be outside. These dogs were ment for cold weather. I would brush her evey other day and still have problems. So I understand how bad it can get and sometimes that's the best thing for the dog.
The double coat is letting them stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Mother nature made it already, don't touch the double coat. And all professional groomers don't use the cage, because it causes extra stress for the dog. Poor malamute, hope he would stay healthy and not get alopecia or "coat funk", so he has to be shaved all his life. 😢
My dog was 10 years old. She started getting hot spots so I took her to the vet. He said I needed to shave her in the summer and change her food. I did both. I hated doing the cut because I loved her long hair. She did better after that. It gets in the 100s here and 90s at night. She couldn't pant enough to keep cool. She was kept in a 6' chain link fence.@@janeyumasheva8599

Marybeth! It's probably a good thing you did shave that big, handsome boy. Otherwise, you wouldn't have found that sore and smell on his back. People need to get over it and stop being so mean. Marybeth is doing what's best for him. The owners are aware, so it's not like she is doing anything wrong. If anything, he will feel much better now that his sore can heal properly. Be nice or find another channel. Marybeth is an amazing groomer.😊
I’ve come to understand that de-matting will only cause pain, especially on a dog with severe matting, so a shave down, even on a double coated dog, is in fact a last resort…
Honestly this looks more like compaction than matting?? you can't pull apart matted hair so easily when grabbed.. There was no attempt at even a high velocity blow dry to see if the hair actually flies out? I know there was mention of why you dont scrub in product, but if there is matting, or even a coat as THICK as this guys, there's no way it'll get down to the skin without a scrub. I'm not an expert but I have my fair share of watching groomers and what they do and some of the techniques they use *ahemgirlwiththedogs*
@@EL-OH-EN-D-OH-ENit’s per owner request I don’t agree with it but she is there to do a service and these dogs are not her dogs blame the owners! Not her!
All that beautiful fur could be spun into yarn like the indigenous people of the north did. Dogs like this helped support a whole village. I have been saving my Samoyeds fur for just that purpose. There are still skilled weavers online that can make yarn from fur and weave something for you.
Honey you do a fantastic job with every dog you groom. It's sometimes necessary to shave a double coat.youxhave said it many times you hate to do that but you have his best interests fat heart
You should never shave a malamute. They have 2 coats. Now the dog can get a sunburn. And The undercoat will now grow back twice as thick and possibly have skin problems. It should have been brushed out before you got the fur wet. It would have got most of the undercoat out. Then wash and dry him. His coat looks normal.
Da muss ich aber staunen, dass dieser Hund dieses mal zuerst gebadet wird........ Es fällt auch auf, dass dieser Hund irgendwie ängstlich reagiert, wenn seine Pfoten geputzt werden sollen.

Marybeth is doing what's best for him. The owners are aware, so it's not like she is doing anything wrong. If anything, he will feel much better now that his sore can heal properly.
Be nice or find another channel. Marybeth is an amazing groomer.😊
Is his head to be trimmed too
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’ve come to understand that de-matting will only cause pain, especially on a dog with severe matting, so a shave down, even on a double coated dog, is in fact a last resort…
NGL, that cage does look a bit tight for his size. 😅
I don't understand why you restarted your channel?
Marybeth is skilled and her channel is very instructive. I look forward to new content, but enjoy the old videos too.
@@sarawhiteman7459there’s no skill in shaving every dog!
@@EL-OH-EN-D-OH-ENit’s per owner request I don’t agree with it but she is there to do a service and these dogs are not her dogs blame the owners! Not her!
Risk Getting Bit ?? He never made any attempt like he was going to bite you.
For D Dog should I never got to this point I get mine girl every month end it helps a lot no Maddie you’re not matting
I wonder if another groomer hit his nails or feet at one time
All that beautiful fur could be spun into yarn like the indigenous people of the north did. Dogs like this helped support a whole village. I have been saving my Samoyeds fur for just that purpose. There are still skilled weavers online that can make yarn from fur and weave something for you.
Awesome job girl
Honey you do a fantastic job with every dog you groom. It's sometimes necessary to shave a double coat.youxhave said it many times you hate to do that but you have his best interests fat heart
Do what you do and forget the rest.
You had to do what was best for the sweet dog. He surely feels better.
Should have tried to brush the matts out before getting wet
It would’ve been painful it’s inhumane to try brushing out a severely matted dog
Isn’t there a golden rule that you shouldn’t shave malamutes? When his coat grows back in it’s gonna be damaged now 😢
Sometimes you don’t have a choice.
His head looks terrible
Poor baby
Not good to watch
Give the dog some love please
She is giving it love by removing its matted hair
I enjoy your videos 😊 😊😊😊
Its a shame he had to be shaved to the skin but he seems happy about it. Less weight from the matting. 😊
Just one question - How do you know "he seems happy about it"?
....or get a short haired dog
Old video and shop said eas was taking time off from u tubing for family
You should never shave a malamute. They have 2 coats. Now the dog can get a sunburn. And The undercoat will now grow back twice as thick and possibly have skin problems. It should have been brushed out before you got the fur wet. It would have got most of the undercoat out. Then wash and dry him. His coat looks normal.
It may look Normal but you weren’t actually there so you wanna put the dog through pain by having it brushed with tons of hair compacted?
Da muss ich aber staunen, dass dieser Hund dieses mal zuerst gebadet wird........
Es fällt auch auf, dass dieser Hund irgendwie ängstlich reagiert, wenn seine Pfoten geputzt werden sollen.
You tried so hard to avoid a shavedown & he did so well through it all.
She didn't do everything. She did somewhat easy things. Wash conditioner and mild water pressure.
You can clearly tell the dog is matted!
The royal battle of wills, you will and dog says I don't think so. Just so that breed I love you till you want me to do what.
Do what you do and for gettheresat
