Erumeli Karimala Pampa Forest Route | Sabarimala Traditional Trekking Path | Periyar Tiger Reserve

- Sabarimala Trek is an important trek route to Sannidhanam, the abode of Ayyappan. It covers a distance of about 46 kilometres (29 mi) through the mountainous terrains and thick forests which are inhabited by many wild animals. It is believed that Ayyappa used this path in his expedition to kill Mahishi, a demoness. Even now, many pilgrims heading towards Sabarimala use this route, especially the pilgrims from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Erumely
This is the starting point of the trek. Most devotees visit the mosque/mausoleum of Vavar Swamy situated in Erumely. It is believed that Vavar swamy (a Muslim devotee of Ayyappa) protects devotees travelling through the Erumely pathway.
Peroorthodu
Peroorthodu is a stream-crossing as well as the first stop on this path, almost 4 km (2.5 mi) from Erumely. Devotees often bathe here and the Kanniayyappas offers "Malarpodi" and "Aripodi" before their journey.
Kalaketty
Kalaketty is situated about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from Perurthodu. According to the legends, Lord Shiva came on his ox and tied it to a banyan tree to witness the killing of the demoness Mahishi by his beloved son, Ayyappa. There is a shrine here dedicated to Lord Shiva and the pilgrims burn camphor and break coconuts as a part of the rituals.
Azhutha
Azhutha, a tributary of Pamba River is just 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from Kalaketty. In Sanskrit, Azhutha is termed as Alamba. Pilgrims have facilities to take rest here. There is also a temple here administrated by the "Malayaraya mahasabha", who has also the administrative controls of Kalaketty, Inchippara and Mukkuzhy temples. The far river side is known as the "Azhutha medu" which is a steep slope.
Kallidamkunnu
The steep Azhutha medu ends at the summit Kallidamkunnu. As part of the customs, the devotees take a pebble from Azhutha river which they drop at Kallidamkunnu to cover the remains of Mahishi. Devotees also burns a camphor here before their journey.
Inchipparakotta
The place got its name due to the presence of a fort built by Udaya. There is a temple here named Kottayil Sastha temple, dedicated to the Inchippara moopan, the guardian of the sacred forests.
Mukkuzhy
Mukkuzhy is situated at a valley. A temple dedicated to Devi is situated here which is administrated by the 'Malayaraya Mahasabha'. Devotees who are tired and unable to continue trekking can and should get help here. It is near to Kuzhimavu bus stand in Koruthodu Panchayat and connected by a concrete road. From Kuzhimavu, buses and taxis are available to Pamba/Sabarimala. Frequent buses are available from Kuzhimavu to Mundakayam.
Karimala
Karimala (Black Hill / Elephant Hill ('Kari': elephant in Malayalam)) is a hazardous point on the trail which is inhabited by many elephants. Pilgrims will have to cross eight levels in Karimala hill to reach its summit. Here, devotees often lights fire to escape from the wild animals and cold. There is a Nazhikkinar (well within a well) here which benefits many pilgrims. They offer their prayers to Karimalanathan (the protector of Karimala) and Karimala Bhagavathy (at the summit) for a risk-free journey.
Valiyanavattom
The steep Karimala hill ends at Valiyanavattom which is the abode of wild elephants.
Cheriyanavattom
It is the stop just before Pamba.

In 2004, I travelled this path to Sabari Mala. There was no time restriction then. I took a bus from thampanoor to erumeli at 2130 hrs, reached etumeli at about 0200 hrs. Erumeli ayyappa temple was a sea of ayyappa at that time, I couldn’t reach anywhere near temple, managed to get inside vavaru mosque, broke a coconut , came outside and asked a roadside tea stall vendor the way to to pampa, he pointed at the crowd moving and asked me to follow them.i followed them, kept walking. By dawn I reached kalakatty temple. An interesting thing happened here . There was non paved road full of jeeps and autorickshaws parked, all the trekkers were approached by the drivers asking them why you want to take the trouble of walking the forest, hurting yourself or rather attacked by wild beasts, we ll take you to pampa safely and comfortably , and to my astonishment I saw many ayyappas being lured away by the drivers.went around the temple and kept following the crowd,by day break reached azhutha. There was no bridge then.i found the ayyappa crowd crossing very slowly across a section of river. I thought why not I avoid them and cross the river fast to overtake the crowd.lo and behold no sooner had I bypassed the crowd than I fell in an abyss of the river. I managed to get myself out fully drenched.The water was freezing cold. What I remember clearly is the contact with freezing cold water was an electric treatment to my already sore foot and crammed calf muscles. My legs got a booster shot from the biting cold water of azhutha. After crossing river, I couldn’t go anywhere near kalldam kunnu, bcos of the crowd I could only pick a grain of sand and throw in the direction of the place to drop the stone. The ground was devoid of any stone whatsoever as the ayyappas before me has cleared the place of stones.
By 1000 my lower back was aching badly After 6 hrs of non stop trekking. I thought I won’t be able to make it non stop, I decided to walk 45 mts and rest for 15 mts.i stuck to this schedule and kept walking till I reached karimala top at 1300 hrs. I had a bowl of kanji from the makeshift stall and lied down for 15 mts.
Reaching karimala means I reached Ajna chakra of the shadadharas. I felt relieved though my lower back was hurting a lot.
A forest guard asked me keep moving to reach pampa before dusk as there was a rogue elephant attack in the path ahead the previous day.
I am all alone and I ve to reach home safely, I couldn’t afford to give anymore rest to myself i if I ve to get back home, I got up and kept moving faster as the terrain was not so harsh on your body, passed valianavattom and cherianavattom and reached pampa by about 1730 hrs if I am not mistaken. Pampa was bone dry. Not a drop of water.as a symbolic gesture I set my foot on the river bed and started to climb neelimala. It was tough bcos of the non stop trekking I had since 2 am. I kept climbing at slowest possible pace non stop till I reached a rope barricade at marakoottam. This was couple of days before makaravilakku.There is no point standing,all I could do was fall in n the ground between the bodies of ayyappa . All I remember is I fell asleep before I hit the ground.i woke up after being trampled upon by the ayyappas who started to move once the barricade was lifted. After about a 100m distance there was another barricade. I was happy I could grab some more sleep.bcos I was sleeping on the ground cushioned with dry leaves and layers of powdery dust the sleep was comfortable. This time I woke up with the strong stench of diarrhoea from the nether regions of ayyappa from other states trampling g over me. I don’t remember how many cat naps I had till I reached sannidanam.by the time I reached sannidanam Harivarasanam was heard playing loudly putting lord ayyappa to sleep.
I couldn’t sleep any more I kept vigil for ayyappa waiting in the metal barricade down below.
At around 0330 the temple was opened . By then I was sitting on the floor on the north east side of sreekovil..I stood up and merged with the crowd of ayyyappas from far and wide. One doesn’t have to move. You ll glide past the sreekovil in a tsunami of Divine surge from all directions.
I did nothing after that. I found an easy way out of sannidanam and kept walking down hill.
On the way down I sat on a chair in a tea stall and ordered a tea. I fell asleep sitting . The shopkeeper shook me up. I was pissed off with him , refused his tea and kept my descend on till I reached pampa. I went into the wash area of Indian coffee house and looked myself in the mirror. I couldn’t recognise myself, that’s what I saw on the mirror. I washed my face and tried to straighten my hair. The hotel staff reprimanded me for that, i gave up improving my looks, ate one dosa and walked towards the bus station. All I remember was boarding a bus to pathansmthitta and the conductor jostling with my body to evict me from the bus at payhsnamthitta. I was felling fresh once I got out of the bus. I got another bus very soon, a Ranni -tvpm fast. I was worried for the passenger who sits next to me bcos i was covered in grime from head to foot.
When I got out of the bus I couldn’t move one step forward. My calf muscles were sore to the point of breaking. I managed to hit the sac at home around 2 pm.
When I got up next morning there was a crowd of relatives at home to find out what happened to me bcos I was not answering the Bsnl telephone blare of those days bcos I was sleeping like a log.

Reach pampa at 2.30 PM. Then 30 minutes bath, food and rest.
4pm at pampa bus stand. Get bus started 4.30 PM snd reach at Kottarakkara 8 PM. Remove Mala at kottarakkara temple.

Last time i went through this long trek from Erumely in the year 2017...we also got rain...so it was very slippery & difficult...this year (2022) i gone through easy Pampa route...best visuals...will be a great memory for people who already gone through this tough long trek route & for those who want to go in future...
