- Superman takes on the roles of the entire Justice League? Sorta...but not really, it's another case of Silver Age comic madness from DC Comics. My favorite part of this story is how the writer said Varuun had a "satellite" that left it in permanent shadow, and the artist didn't get that it was supposed to be a moon (a natural satellite) and instead drew this gigantic artificial satellite blocking the sun. Who exactly would launch such a thing?
Water World sounds basically perfect. The worst thing about is that Clark occasionally gets wistful, but him going to the surface isn't functionally any different than his usual trips out into space when he's feeling like brooding that he does on Earth.

I can just imagine that Superman would be in a Achilles type of situation, forced to cross dress by his parents in order to act as a symbol to empower women on that planet, becoming Super(wo)man.

What I think is especially interesting are the wider implications of this story and others like it. In particular - that it appears that Jor-El seems to have been the only person on the planet Krypton to figure out that under a yellow sun a Kryptonian - any Kryptonian - would become one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy.
If others knew that - you can bet that someone like General Zod would hop on a rocket ship and head over to the nearest yellow sun to set himself up as an all powerful dictator.
Depends on the continuity. Sometimes Jor-El discovers it while looking for a place to send his son, other times it's a closely guarded secret the Science Council had been keeping for ages.
doubt zod even could, krypton forbade any type of space travel. Its apparently one of the reasons why their planet was so advanced: They focused on it singulary.
I wanted to see what the world where he's basically Wonder Woman would look like.
That could be fun; I'd imagine that alien world being similar to the "Green Arrow" medieval world, but it would mirror ancient Greece instead (with "yellow" sun); people there seeing Kal-El as an actual god.
I used to not like recolours often for being flat but after reading many I've gotten used to it and now more so prefer the vibrance in some instances like All-Star Squadron.
Idk why but Kal saying the "S" stands for speed slays me. Water world for life though, Kal seemed arguably happier there than on Earth in a lot of ways -plus no land people meant at least he didn't have to deal with a twisted Black Manta equivalent if he ever decided to settle down-.
Recolors have grown on me, I just wish they'd tried to keep the dots. The dots added a blush effect that made it look more like real skin.

About the color: when it comes to art there are two types of color: Reflective (print and photos) and transmitted (Video Screens). Reflective color is when the light hits the ink on a page, then the color is reflected and that is what your eyes see. Transmitted is a light that shines the color directly to the eye.
The thing is old printed books, the color is faded and the newsprint have yellowed. The recolors are on digital and higher quality paper come across as far more intense. But they are accurate.
The writer/artist credits are a good change, but actual tampering with the content--even just changing the title--is a huge no-no in my eye. (Especially if the title change is rendered completely pointless by mentioning it directly below the new title.
Worst example: If one compares scans of the '70s issues of _Detective Comics_ to the modern digital versions, it becomes immediately obvious that the artwork has been completely redone in several panels. Those panels were drawn by Neal Adams and inked by Dick Giordano, and the new artwork has the distinct "fish lipped" look of Adams' later work. I used to love Adams' art (before his _Skate-Man/Batman: Odyssey_ days) but if this was his doing, and if it was an attempt to replace Giordano's work with his own, as far as I'm concerned he might as well have wiped his ass with the physical pages.
I had no idea about this story and it was very entertaining to hear about. I would honestly have been cool with a whole Imaginary Story about Superman on Planet Xan my immature self found that to be a short joke gold mine especially the "For once I'm glad of my small size". It just made me think of all the times he must brag to everyone on earth about how big he is lol.
I love a nice What If scenario. They were always my favourites when I binge-read a whole bunch of silver age comics
The premise reminds me a little of the Smallville ep where it is revealed Jor-El had visited Earth previously, informing his later decision to send Supes here.
This kinda makes me wish there was a multiverse crossover with all those versions of him teaming up.

We didn't get Wonder Woman either. I demand my Wonder Man the strangely disturbing white tights under the usual costume like in that one earlier story she covered - think it was a Mr. Myxlplyx caper IIRC.

I agree that, given the premise "Superman turns into other Justice Leaguers", this was a pretty clever way to do it. It kind of doesn't work, though, because in most versions of the story, Jor-El intended for his whole family to escape Krypton, and it was only the fact that the destruction of the planet came even sooner than he predicted that forced him to just shove the baby into the prototype rocket at the last minute. So shouldn't he be looking for a world where they would all be happy together? (Never mind that he's wasting a lot of time screwing around with this computer instead of, you know, *finishing the damn rocket*!) Oh well, the Silver and Bronze Ages are full of these kinds of little retcons, showing that Jor-El was doing all these side projects in and around sending Kal to Earth. I like the one in World's Finest where Jor-El creates special pills that give you super-powers, just in case they go to Earth, get powers, lose their powers somehow, and then need to get them back. Even Batman would look askance at that level of contingency planning...
That last bit only now makes me realize that jor-el is essentially a happy and not traumatized Bruce Wayne.... in a sense like smartest man in his high ranking group of individuals and the pre-planning in some of these stories is a little more then even batman would be willing to ever do
Jor-El planning 10 steps ahead with those pills, instead of finishing step 1, which is finish the rocket.

I was kinda hoping the "Superman-as-Flash" story would be about him landing on a magic-heavy world, so he'd have to rely less on his invulnerability and more on his speed and agility.
that's a fun way to have him become the flash. You could even have it be that his invulnerability goes unnoticed due to the magic and focus on speed, so people start calling him the flash thanks to that being his only recognizable feature.

They didn't go too deep into it, and yet they kind of did. It almost felt like the choice was already made though, and fun how he didn't seem to have any "local" name on any of those planets..!
I like that the giant planet is out because there would be no one to marry and I'm like this world would be a paradise for a lot of people 👀

This comic would be a fun DC showcase short. Seeing Superman animated in all the different costumes and styles! Also just watching the crazy expression they could give Jor-el while he’s reacting to all these alternate scenarios😂

I like these tales I used to have Superman # 197. It had Clark Kent in different jobs other than a reporter from The Daily Planet. The comic was 80 pages that explored about five different roles. I don't have that comic any more but from what I remember he was a caveman, fire fighter, a G-man, and a couple others I can't remember. It was fun reading. I'll have to see if I can find that issue again.
I recognized this story immediately -- I actually had that issue as a kid! (No, I don't have it any more -- one of those sad tales of "my mom threw out all my comics when we moved"). Thanks for the memories, Sasha.

But what happened to Lois? Didn't Jor-El take her into account? Maybe she would change her name, move to Coast City and find Hal so dreamy.
Cripes, his wife was right there watching all this. Lois and Jor-El dated for a while thanks to time travel shenanigans, and she pretty much only broke it off when she realized she wouldn't be able to marry her own son if things kept up - even Kryptonians draw the line at that, even if kissing cousins are A-OK. Love to see him try to explain why his creepy ex is there on the planet he's shooting their kid off to. Lara would kill him before Krypton finished exploding.
Lara - "Shouldn't we look at his Earth future too, dear? Maybe it'll be even worse."
Jor-El - "Uh....no, no, I'm sure it's fine." he says as he covertly spins the POV selector off of the "Lois' shower" preset he had it on.
Had this story in a collected edition as a kid and loved it. It really hit me as how different but the same things would be on other worlds. Thanks for reminding me of it. The other story... one where for some reason he was acting out each line of rich man, poor man... was also strange.
OMG! Probably because it was my first experience with anything that knocked me out (with ether), I recall this particular comic (the original,. not the reprint) from when I got my tonsils out! It was one of the new comic books I was allowed to buy to read while I was in the hospital. I recall very clearly the setup of how Kal-El would react to environments with different colored sunlight. That had to have been close to 60 years ago!

Kal-El is so luck his father sent him to a planet without depression, existential crisis or darkness of any sort.
Pretty sure he never felt himself alone and so different from the rest he'd need a secret identity to blend in.

I can't believe it, this is one of the handful of random Silver Age reprints I read as a kid! I only came upon your enormously entertaining channel recently, but you have already instilled in me a deep love for the zany Silver Age.
I said it before, but I'll say it again;
I want, nay, NEED McFarlane to make figures of these Supermen.
Some cool ideas here, but not really shocked that Kal becoming a floppy-eared "Diro-Man" on Saruun never stuck.
"Updating" the colors of classic books so that they're ruined in reprints is a tragedy. I've heard that part of the problem comes from the same color of ink transferring/appearing different when applied to newsprint as opposed to glossy paper. Thankfully the _Supergirl: The Silver Age_ collections do a really good job with coloring.
It looks so flat, too. The dots added a sort of blush effect that made it look like real skin. And the lines had weight to them, making facial expressions and shadows look stronger. The recolors look like cheap digital tracings of the original.
I read this as a kid and it was one of my favourite silver age stories. I appreciate when you do these weirdo Superman stories!

I'm surprised the Planet Xann wasn't brought back for that one reboot of the Legion of Super-Heroes where Colossal Boy was always a giant and insisted on being called Micro Lad.

You know 'Ostrasized' would be a great name for a shrinking themed supervillain or the perfect name for a Hank Pym alter ego!

This reminds me of Justice League of America #61, where the entire JLA disguises themselves as Green Arrow when they find out that somebody (Dr. Destiny) is after him. The only one who doesn't try it is Wonder Woman, after she puts on the outfit but checks herself in a mirror and realizes she can't hide her figure. It's one of my favorite panels!
Plus, it has appearances from Luthor, the Penguin, Dr. Light, I.Q., Captain Boomerang, Jason Woodrue and Tattooed Man as Dr. Destiny's gang. Also, "Cutlass Charlie" for Aquaman's counterpart, because nobody knew any of Aquaman's villains at that time. Poor Arthur :/

I remember reading this story in a digest when I was in junior high. It was entertaining, but kind of dumb. The weird inconsistencies pulled at me. On the giant world birds are called "birds"; on the water world whales are "whales", but on the darkness world bats are called "diros"? On most worlds, Kal-El ended up dressing like one of his friends... except the one where he's dressed in a ugly mixture of his regular suit and Barry's suit. And, damn, if this story didn't throw shade on Oliver's schtick as being medieval.
Also, they should have used Kathoon (Lydda Jath's homeworld) for the Diro, just as a bit of continuity.
Pocket sized Clark is overwhelmingly cute, im sure there's at least one lady on that planet that wouldnt mind having a tiny super powered husband. They could be like a heroic duo where she does the investigating, then when things go fubar Clark pops out of her handbag and starts beating up the bad guys. It'd be adorable.
I love that the community post helps choose this article, because there were five great articles to choose from, but this was the one I was really hoping for
Not gonna lie, as strange as this was, I think the basic concept of this could make a pretty interesting animated film. Perhaps The AI from Superman‘s baby shuttle plays out simulations of what will most likely happen if Superman goes to a specific world? Then we as the audience would get to see it played out, maybe even each different simulation could have a different art style and direction to help differentiate them. You could call the film “The Superman of Many Worlds.”
Now they wouldn’t all have to play out the same, may be in some of his lives superman is a hero one another’s maybe he becomes a villain because of the circumstances? Maybe in some worlds he becomes Superman, while another’s he becomes reminiscent of another member of the Justice League? Maybe the story could even have an element of nature versus nurture, where all of these alternate versions of superman‘s life are different but there are some constant similarities.
Edit: One alternate home I think would be cool would be showing what would happen if superman ended up on Mars. Maybe he would be adopted by J’Jon (Martian Manhunter)?
I see I feel like there’s just so many ways you could take this story despite how simple it is.

Thanks so much for this Sasha. This is one of the stories that was crystalized in my memory as a 6 year old. I remember hours spent with the fantastical images of Superman in the guise of my other favorite heroes. The costume on the cover was the most exciting image toe fro.m the whole book. I was so taken with the combination of colors that this cover was my phone lock screen image for a couple of years.
I didn't know of the revisit in the 90's as I'd had to drop buying comics because of economic factors, but I'm looking them up as soon as I finish this and will see if they're affordable for me now, along with the original Action Comics 314.

You would think Saruun being a dark world... and Julius Schwartz being one of the earliest continuity minded editors, he would have just recycled Kathoon which was already a planet mentioned in the LSH by 1963.

If you're up on astronomy and the Hubble & James Web space telescopes, discovering planets on distant stars is not an easy business. Although, we are finding some in distant galaxies now. Still, Kal-El finds a half dozen or more, on stars that are close enough to Krypton, to make it worthwhile to launch his son's rocket toward. AMAZING!

This was great! I slipped on some ice this morning and bruised some ribs, so laughing hurts a little. You weren't easy on me, lol! On the subject of repros, I like them as original as possible. Original coloring, ads, letters colums, etc. I love it when they keep it historically accurate. The worst at this is Archie comics, who will "update" cultural references in older stories, changing "Bing Crosby" into "Justin Bieber" or whatever, without even bothering to match the font. I even saw a story where a terrible artist hand-drew a CD boom-box over the space that was obvously a record player in the original! They can't change the period fashions, the architecture, the car models, art style, etc. Why bother? Anyway, loved this episode (?) of CC and look forward to the next one!

My thing is, with all the time his father was able to spend looking up other planets across the universe, you'd think he'd spend that time actually trying to stop Krypton blowing up or maybe shipping more people off to those planets so more could survive. Maybe prioritize the "best" planet for his son and ship escapees off to any other habitable planet. That would have made more sense.

I prefer scans of the original comics, because I can load them up in my picture editor (I use Irfan) and adjust the colors, contrast and brightness to suit my tastes--usually. Sometimes it's difficult to get it just right, depending on the quality of the original scan, but I can always make it look better. What's really strange is how this affects one's reading of the comic.
