    With the whole concept of the "Kryptonite Mutation" thing, it'd be interesting to run Kryptonite as inherently corruptive.
    Like, the reason there's always so much, and always MORE, is because if you put Kryptonite next to something for long enough, it just also becomes Kryptonite.
    Maybe even tie this into WHY Krypton exploded. the kryptonite was like a cancer slowly eating at the core of the planet until it finally lost cohesion. Make it a "molecular virus" or something suitably silly.

    My favorite "dueling narration boxes" between Supes and Bats was when Batman was going to marry Selina. Both were hesitant to talk to each other. Selina and Lois were each telling Bruce and Clark "just call him!". Batman: "Everyone looks up to him and adores him". Supes: "Everyone wants to be him." ... Batman: "He has amazing powers and can do anything, why would he want to be my friend?" Superman: "He does have the advantage of powers and does amazing things, why would he want to be my friend?" It was a great issue. Clark was worried about Bruce telling Selina who he is and Lois was telling him that Selina is pretty sharp and probably already knows, and then was patronizing to Clark when he said he thought his disguise was really good. Meanwhile, Selina was telling Bruce if he's worried about telling her Superman's identity, then don't worry. I mean, a reporter who writes all about Superman and looks exactly like him, but with glasses, isn't too hard to figure out. LOL

    I never read this storyline, but just from this video it reminds me a bit of the first "Armor Wars" where Stark went on a quest to reclaim all his stolen tech, even crossing a few lines along the way. Stark's quest seems less selfish though with the basic difference being the justifications: Stark taking reponsibility for all the damage his tech might do in the wrong hands v. Superman feeling justified defending himself because of all the good he does and will do.

    • @nctpti2073
      @nctpti2073 Год назад +9

      That was a different order of stupid, though, since, even though I don't remember it being overtly said, when he effectively erased / remotely destructed applications that used his tech, he hit a lot of friendly/innocent users. There was no indication anyone using the Guardsman armour was doing so in any anti-societal way, for example, and some of those people were likely in harms way when it was shut down. And IIRC, he ended up faking his own death to avoid the legal consequences.

    • @arcadiaberger9204
      @arcadiaberger9204 Год назад +6

      @@nctpti2073 IIRC, Stark's reason for feeling justified in destroying all copies of his armor technology was that all of it was copied from data stolen from him, and he hadn't patented it specifically because he didn't want just anyone to be able to build things based on it (I liked the allusion to that in the first Iron Man film: "our proprietary repulsor technology").

    • @nctpti2073
      @nctpti2073 Год назад +5

      @@arcadiaberger9204 It wasn't all stolen from him, though. The Spymaster did steal data from him, but Stane's hostile takeover of Stark International was legal, even if his attacks on Tony leading up to it were not. Bought is not the same as stolen.
      And that does not change the fact that, to remove his tech from the Guardsmen, he had to break into a prison, which also implicated Rhody and Steve Rogers (Cap), endangered all of the guards and led to a prison breakout.

    2) Batman explained to Alfed how Deadman wasn't an actual ghost, but a human tied to the Quantum field.
    3) Neil Gaimen once wrote DC rules to Magic. The basic premise was that you either walked in the world of science or magic: once you chose, that is the world you tread. Magic always had a cost. And the last thing: Magic users were never going to be happy.
    4) As of Doomsday Clock: Magic is the left over energy from creation: Similar to older unused code in a computer program. Only those that are on the outliers of creation can tap into it “rewriting reality”

Years ago, DC established he could melt it with his x-ray vision and make it harmless or blow it out of range with his super/- breath. Instead of at least trying to fight it, he collapses like a rag doll, moaning and groaning. He is easily mind controlled and defeated by foes he should have been able to rip apart in seconds. I know they wanted to power him down because they thought he had gotten too powerful, but they have gone way too far the other way. Read the classic Silver Age epic “Superman Under the Green Sun,” or the 90s classic “The Death of Superman.” That was the true Man of Steel, not the Wimp of Clay he has become.

    There is a 70s story where Superman either isn't affected by Kryptonite or somehow it all goes inert, but the event that made it happen also created a sand clone of Superman. I don't know what happened next because it wasn't in the big "Superman From The 30s To The 70s" book I used to borrow from the library but it might be worth a look.

    Whenever I see people denying the existance of magic in a story where magic is very obvious and unexplainable by science, they always come across less like reasonable men of science and more like flat earthers who deny what's right in front of them.

Various gods and meta humans are believable though for Batman. Lana's argument is really dumb I helped build kryptonite weapons to save jobs on the other hand how many times has Lex tried to kill Superman & how many times has Superman saved everything not to mention Lana specifically

    I think Batman's skepticism of magic isn't 100% arbitrary when you consider that most of DC's magic users, as opposed to the more Honors Student crowd at Marvel, tend to be misfits and outsiders, sometimes even bordering on criminals. Even Zatanna's "Everyone thinks I'm a stage magician but I actually do magic for real" has layers of deception to it. After working with John Constantine, master tricker and living shitpost of a human being, I might come out believing magic was a thing less than when I started.

    • @SimonMoon5

      On the other hand, Batman's "I don't believe in ghosts" philosophy that he had at one point was very strange considering that he's teamed up with Deadman a bunch of times, not to mention meeting the Spectre a few times.
      It's still weird that Batman thinks Billy Batson says the word "Shazam" to turn into Captain Marvel via science. Or that Wonder Woman got her powers from the gods scientifically.

    A lot of Dc's from this time that you review are things I read when they came out, but have since forgotten. But this one stayed with me. i remember the series had been very hit and miss to me to this point. More miss than hit. But this one I liked. I can only recall liking it and the Aquaman issue, but even so.
    I thought Aquaman in this was Artie Jr, as the internet called him? The legacy version introduced in the Kurt Busiek run. This because that was coming out at the same time, and because here he has Loreena and King Shark with him. Supporting characters from that run. I remember I thought this issue showed he could really work as a character if written right. But that was not to be of course.
    Suppose Lance's mother had been to free baseball glove day at the stadium, and used that on her kids. Would Lance have ended up being Glove Man?
    Amanda not seemingly knowing Bruce is Batman reminds me of All Star Batman [the Snyder version] where Alfred says 'working out he is Batman is not hard. But Master Bruce has made it that proving such is impossible.'

    I hate how ubiquitous Kryptonite is! In the DC Universe, you can find the stuff on every street corner and 7-11. If it's from an extinct world, then Kryptonite needs to be rare - adding to its gravitas.

    • @SimonMoon5
      @SimonMoon5 Год назад +2

      That's probably why in the post-Crisis reboot, there was only *one* piece of kryptonite and Lex Luthor had it. He used up bits of it here and there (like giving Bloodsport kryptonite bullets) until all he had left was enough for one kryptonite ring (that gave him cancer and made him lose his hand). It wasn't until much later in the post-Crisis universe that kryptonite came back in a big way, back to pre-Crisis levels. I think it was this very series (Superman/Batman) that was guilty of doing this.
      It's probably also why in the 70's, the pre-Crisis universe got rid of all kryptonite on Earth by having a chain reaction from something cause all the kryptonite on Earth to turn into lead.

    I'm super curious how they explained this much kryptonite being on Earth (and so many different kinds). I thought Krypton was fairly far away from Earth and Clark's pod had to be programmed to go there. I'd have expected kryptonite to be more scattered across the galaxy.

      They started going with the Smallville/Superman TAS explanation at some point (that being that a bunch of it was dragged here in the wake of Superman's ship's spacewarp wake; an extrapolation of a piece being embedded in it as seen in the original Man of Steel mini). I first remember seeing that explanation used in the comics in Kelley's Action Comics run: the origin of Russian Zod involved a kryptonite meteor shower "pulled" here by Kal-El's ship destroying a Russian space station.

    I asked myself the same question re: kryptonite leading to radiation poisoning (ala the Byrne Reboot of Man of Steel's Lex Luthor getting a robotic hand because of it). I've got a fondness for Jewel Kryptonite as something unique but potentially dangerous when used by psychic powers (also, because it was relatively unchanged in appearance from the Jewel Mountains a real piece of home). Also an honorable mention to Silver Kryptonite that I only learned about in a blurb in one of those DC Digests - Spuerman vs. Kryptonite! - It was a pratical joke by Jimmy Olsen (what a pal!) celebrating Superman's Silver Anniversary
    Also, loving the hair! The colour and style really pop!
