    The thing with Aikido on youtube is that most videos are from training sessions. I have seen two real fights on the street with someone who clearly very good in Aikido. The fights were over in about one second with the attacker lying on the floor screaming in pain. A training session is very slow, this enables you to learn the technique. You practice it a million times until the technique is part of your muscle memory and will execute lightning fast. My two kids learn Aikido and they have never been in a fight. Running away is still the best technique. Nobody gets hurt and nobody looses/wins. But if the need arise to defend yourself, you better have those techniques available.

Aikido ain't the problem its just some of the training methods. I'm sub to your online school. Where do I begin. Are the lists in order? I'm In your tenshin, combativite online program if that helps. To all criticizing his MMA clinch because it isn’t “MMA”: what is MMA? Isn’t it a new martial arts concept blending different skills from multiple disciplines? Back in the day, when Gene LeBell did that famous fight versus the boxer, Milo Savage, you could talk about mixed martial arts tournaments. (Vale Tudo is another example). Gene has black belts in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and Karate. That’s MMA! If you’re just talking about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, that’s another story. MMA and BJJ aren’t the same thing. BJJ is great with one attacker or as a sports discipline. Not so great in the street with a gang of mofos trying to kill you. I’ll take my chances with my Aikido and my Walther, thank you!

    Note how he fully states what's illegal in MMA, he is correct. What he is proving here is that there is a response with numerous reactions and applications to control the fight... The difference is literally in how it is applied and taught. This guy is proving it works...

      I know I'm late with my reply but you are very right. If you have time look for a "gator grip" from defense system called Defence Lab. Being gripped and basically skin teared WILL make you react and you WILL let that grab go, I don't care who you are. Now, who in their right mind would try to apply that in a sparring???? So in MMA logic that doesn't work. But it DOES!

    I trained under Suganuma sensei in Fukuoka and have to say that I appreciate your efforts here. Aikido is a beautiful art that many people misunderstand. MMA has its own rules which negate many moves in TMA. MMA is a sport. Aikido is martial art devised pre WWII to first and foremost avoid the fight! Second to disarm an armed attacker. 3rd, neutralize the threat/threats without killing if possible. Many techniques were created with multiple attackers with weapons in mind. I say this because of all the misconceptions that are prevalent especially in the US. Aikido can be a very effective method of self defense but it's also a lot more than that. It's a philosophy. A way of thinking differently about confrontation and ways to avoid it. It's also truly an art.

  • @AzraelCaptain
    @AzraelCaptain 7 лет назад +5

    The part where you said "change your art, or it will change you" really struck a chord with me. I used to be really hardcore about training traditional Aikido and hoping against hope that it would work. Overtime I realized that the whole thing were just theatrics, that even though I was putting my heart and soul into techniques, it was wholly dependent on the other guy's give, at least the way it is typically trained. What really set me off was how manipulative some of the senseis were. Fortunately the one I trained under wasn't a dick, just another flavor of gullible (and sincerely talented as well!), but his own master was a scumbag picking bullshit political fights with other scumbags. I regret having to have said goodbye when I found another art, but I wouldn't go back. Even if I loved the time I spent practicing it and it has certainly given me some principles that have stuck, it's just ineffective at a very basic level in its typical expression.

    Thank you Lenny, what's done in the real world is just black and white difference from what's allowed or not in the ring! I wish I knew this Ikkyo application from this all too common clinch, I will definitely work on this to own it as Rokus, I had another approach to it and I will share it on some future video. Shihan Larry taught me that double whami arm pin on his hand and arm lock from the outside as you called it "overkill". I love this and cannot wait to see more, in Loss Prevention this Principle technique would have been great to know, but that's okay, If we can save others and keep them off the ground, what you are doing is Phenomenal, you are gonna do wonders for Rokus Aikido and mine, Domo Arigato!

  • @jj-wp6wc
    @jj-wp6wc 7 лет назад +3

    I like your Aikido much better than the common Aikido. Nice technique, good way to escape the clinch, Muay Thai techniques have very similar methods, it's going to be tough to get that arm lock after the escape on an experienced fighter. But hey guys, I know MMA communities rarely give respect to Aikido, but every school has something to offer.

    I’ve watched a lot of your videos. With all due respect, I would love to see you spar against a BJJ practitioner or any other MMA practitioner. The points you made in this video are very valid ....so put your Aikido to the test by accepting a challenge. If Aikido or your version of it is practical then my request shouldn’t be a big deal, as most other martial artist spar, take on challenges, and enter tournaments everyday. You have a black belt and a popular youtube channel...you are in a perfect position to showcase the effectiveness of Aikido.

      Aikido is purely a self defense art. why would he have to try it on the ring plus with resistance? If he has to face a BJJ in the ring then he has to stick with BJJ not aikido. take for example BJJ or MMA in a street fight are you willing to risk yur self by taking down yur opponent on the ground? what if there are 8 of them and your on the ground? I wouldn't do that if I were on the street and your dead for sure because in a street fight bringing your opponent to the ground will be the least thing you'll do. Self defense Martial art is different from sports style Martial arts.

      Telling him to put his Aikido to the test by challenging a MMA practitioner when he clearly is not claiming or guaranteeing his aikido will be effective on a experienced and trained mixed martial artist or bjj practitioner. If he was claiming and selling it as if he could dominate any martial art or fighting style then it would be a different story. It’d be like you asking me to challenge a mma practitioner because I am a bjj practitioner that trains/competes in sport bjj. Two different worlds.

    That is BEAUTIFUL!!! I have to thank you. I was no slouch before, but your videos are making me even better; I'm seeing things I wouldn't have in the past. With this video, as soon as I saw the clinch, I thought, "Push his elbow up." Before, I would have been been (as you discussed) trying to get his head down, so I could work the knees. This Ikkyo approach takes so much less energy! What's really funny is that, when he brought the clinch in tight, I thought, "A good shot to the ribs should loosen him up," and about halfway through my thought, you did exactly what I was thinking...a very NOT traditional Aikido "attack defense". LOVE IT!
    By the way, regarding your comments about the peanut gallery, (A) like you said, most of the trolls aren't worth addressing...though that is, kind of, how we became friends, LOL, and (B) I am admittedly fat and out of shape, but with 20+ years of principle-based training, you know I'm can still do some damage. (San Soo Sr. Grandmaster Greg Jones, Sr. says, "I'm at my fighting weight...because I'm too fat to run away. LOL)

    I love BJJ been doing it for 6 years now after wrestling through highschool and college. I appreciate your videos as I can recognize why some of your arm locks can be functional and I enjoy taking what i see in your videos and playing around with the options in BJJ it helps me to be more creative in finding my own style as I train for self defense first, competition second. Also, you are absolutely right in saying what works for you may not work for me. We are different people training differently with different body types. I hope you continue to investigate ways in which you can improve your variation of Aikido and show it to the masses. Also, if you don't have any friends that train boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, or simply an MMA guy, I'd say try and find some and do some friendly sparing with them, it may help both parties find holes that need to be filled. Keep up the awesome work.

      I didn't mention it because it's not a focus but I also do Muay Thai, Boxing and work in some Judo (there was a reason i mentioned the styles as useful). I like Judo as I feel it is great for self defense, finish the fight by throwing the guy on the ground hard enough they don't want to get up, combined with BJJ, if i get taken down i can escape, combined with boxing to learn how to avoid getting punched in the face. Every style has something to offer. In the end if you are training for self defense it comes down to how you train and not which style or how many. When I train BJJ, i always try to incorporate punches into the mix (never full on but a little tap here and there to ensure it's available). I also occasionally work with some of the pro fighters that come in (they kick my ass, but that's not the point). I am just going to reiterate, it's not the style that matters when training for self defense, it's how you train.

    Great technique! I'll be checking out more of this terrific channel!
    I've also gone to ground fighting an MMA guy who got his arms under mine and got me off the ground, then drops me and quickly scuttles into an arm bar with his legs across my chest. Those low clinches can be tricky! Also boxing jab combos, and certain rear chokes.
    Let the BSers carry on in ignorance! Many are just TV fanboys. Aikido has improved and preserved my life, and these days I apply it mentally in other ways. So yes, the physical is there, but so are the mind aspects--and here is where Aikido has a greater social benefit than a mere combat art, which espouses mere conflict and egotistical victory (which can also be losing).
    Keep up the great work!

    it's really nice to hear someone talking about self defense and multiple options.
    too many people says "there's that one solution that will work in every cases, everything else will fail no matter the context." you say: "you can break the clinch that way and you get nice follow up for those techniques"
    you even explain how the technique could fail and the variations you could do when it happens. you clearly show that when things don't go as planned, you may and should strike to keep an advantage.
    you insist that you shouldn't stay on the ground to control an opponent.
    great video, it's not every day i see one without any major flow, especially when it's about aikido.

    Awesome I love these vids man. I studied several martial art forms growing up and always heard about aikido and the thing that attracted me to it was the use of the opponents force against them, almost ghostlike fighting.
    I practiced aikido for about three years more recently and although I took a lot from it I was often thinking during classes that some of the attacks weren’t common in a real fight/ attack situation.
    However I fully appreciate that I didn’t really scratch the surface.
    I like how you apply it and mould it around different combat forms. That really brings the value of it to light in my opinion and I think you are doing a lot of people a lot of good as well as the discipline itself.
    Thanks for sharing man and fk the trolls- like you said most people running their mouth haven’t got the balls to back it up. Or anything to contribute except negativity and egoism.

    Man, if you want to show proper clinch defense, you need to invite someone who can actually do proper clinch. You see, this is the biggest fail of Aikido. Many of the techniques do work, but the way uke attacks is, many times, well, not realistic to say the least... invite someone who actually can strike, who can clinch. Then I'd be happy to watch.

      @@tomastelensky-vlog8723 not every combat situation is the same. it never is. I work as a bouncer and I often find myself wrestling around with people while trying to get them out the club, and in that case the control moves/restraints/pain compliance techniques he is showing could work a lot better than a fist to the customer nose. first of all you get a better control of the annoying customer and second of all because if the accident is caught on camera (as in 99% of time) and you are caught punching a customer in the face you could end up with legal issues (at least here in the UK) and lose your license, while with a physical restraint you can come out of it clean. Real life is not like in movies, it could only take one good punch to send a guy on the floor banging his head and dying, so if i can avoid that by using restraints, I'll gladly do it.

Regardless of what anyone says, you ARE preserving aikido by helping it evolve. The basics of aikido revolve around proper movement for evasion, using an attackers force/momentum against them and choice. You are doing ALL those things in what you teach. Keep up the great work. U R SO RIGHT...i train AikiDO and MMA and Aikido NEEDS TO EVOLVE !!! i think we dont hv anymore that old masters (like monks) that study martial arts all their intire life and only dedicate to MA. Bruce Lee also said that if not eficient u simple dont train it. Aikido is a bit overpast by the modern fight (like MMA) simply didnt kept up with the evolution of the MAs.
    It is very efficient in some parts of the fight but u need to choose it right and some times u would not be able to execute the techenique cuz ur oponnent is so strong and TOO FAST!
    U R PART of one of the few that are trying to put AIKIDO in the right track and make it evolve
    so he can be as effective as other MAs, and Aikido deserves it by its philosophy (finish a fight without even start/no one kick their asss of each other).
    I myself am trying to do it also. after i have much more experient in Aikido and MMA i will do it and visit some others so we can evolve Aikido. Good videos and thx 4 sharing m8. u r awesome gj

    First off, its always the practitioner.
    In aikido fights the win in the millisecond, if it takes longer, you(aikido) lost.
    Aikido is similar to Taichi and its former Shaolin/Wudang incarnation. I mean a Japanese guy self taught and improved an earlier practise. Human beings only have so many physical movements.
    Ueshiba Morihei had to practise combat Aikido to save his own life and his family. Id say it is a far greater motivation for perfection that doing it for a living (not disrespecting) or something as trivial as winning a fight for a whim.
    All aikido practitioners, the more skilled they are, learn how to disarm a physical altercation before it begins as they mature into realization there is a great cost in applying their Aikido skillset. Aikido can terminate life.
    To bring down the purpose of Aikido on the level of MMA where people savage each other for money. No.
    If i want to win the fight, id ambush the guy with missiles.
    Coz i want to win.
    Applied aikido is when SOL.
    See any Aikikai videos or shows?
    Several police/special forces do learn it.
    This guy in the video is not really showing all he can do with his Aikido. He has lots more. Its always nice to watch his movements.
    Much better than his speaking ability. No offense. Sing with your body bro.

    "if it doesn't work in a practical form, what is the point of training it?" Too right. All techniques should be tested at least in free play against a resisting opponent. Otherwise you can't know if it works.

  • @observerfx212
    @observerfx212 7 лет назад +3

    Great technique! With an MMA fighter, this clinch is only if you can manage to keep them from clinching around your stomach, as they tend to come in low. With a street fight or bar fight, watch a hockey match and you can see how a "hurticane" of hooks turns into a standing clinch.
    Couldn't agree more about naysayers who haven't begun to understand Aikido (or any other arts besides their magic pill art). One point being, not everyone practices martial arts for sport and ego-stroking by reinforcing the otherness of the opponent. Aikido recognizes that the conflict with an enemy is ULTIMATELY an illusion, that we are all ONE. The universe is consciousness and only takes form through having discrete observers. Convenient to overlook, sure - damn near impossible sometimes - but the truth is the truth, and those who embrace the lie of objectification of the other guy are the ones who are defeated by the illusion of life. In winning, they actually lose. And then they die anyway.
    Why is that? Why must their creative expression rely on destruction of others? They other guy has to be a bad guy, right? Well what if it's just some asshole, just like you, having a bad day - you going to ruin his life because he lost his temper at you and took a chump sucker punch at you? Are you that important? What if there are no bad guys? What if I'm the bad guy because I too, have a heart capable of not only good, but evil, and I make that choice every minute of every day? Wouldn't that make me as deserving of destruction as ANYBODY else? Do I need a shiny trophy to help razzle dazzle away that truth? There are trophy stores, go buy as many as you need and go nuts. LOOK BEYOND THE FIGHT. Some fighting art, if it can't see past the destruction and the ego of winning. Now that, my friends, is BULLSHIT.
    As for the technique in the video- I do disagree that the arm lock ends the fight. Here's why - the guy may have friends. Now you're locked down holding him in a lock until when, doomsday? The police arrive? He ain't gonna start not resenting you in a hurry. If you let him up, boom, he's at you again. If his friend/s start coming at you - do you have to break the arm now? I can tell you, in some shit countries in the world, the guy is only bold because he's got 50 other guys all within shouting distance, and they all have a Napoleon crisis in their pants. I am very hesitant to practice techniques that end at the lock. Every swing you let the guy have at you risks your life. The fight is not, in fact, over. So I personally think it's a danger to practice that the lock is the end, because that is the habit we get into. Like not ending the fight immediately, or pulling a punch - what you practice is what you DO. The arm lock is not the end of the need for zanshin. Not "on the street". (Love the standing lock tho)!
    The fact that someone can look at a martial art and only see the most shallow of judgments about it - being "choreographed" or what have you - only reveals how shallow and worthless their understanding truly is. Their opinion isn't worth shit on the topic. They may have other ideas, and that's great - we are all in need of learning, even them - especially if they haven't begun to understand what is in front of their eyes. They probably tell a race car driver "Drive faster than everybody else". And then go pick up a sack of groceries in a 1985 Ford Escort....
    No, they're gonna be a house painter but they're not gonna use brown. Ever. "Brown has nothing to offer. Brown is a fake color. Brown will only emphasize your skidmarks. Purple, that's the only real man's color. Bruce Lee didn't know what the fuck he was talking about, Jeet Kun Do, style of no style. Now pass me the cheese dip."
    M'kay....

      I am hesitant to embrace the "we-are-all-one" hypothesis, or that the universe is consciousness, for either oneness or separateness might still be false while some other state of being may be the cause of everything we experience. When it comes to self-defense, I am guilty of objectification, perhaps. Some of my girlfriends have been raped, which leads me to feel that objectification is sometimes necessary. One girlfriend in particular carried her rape fetus to term, and then raised that child by working two jobs until her son graduated from college with an engineering degree. Another took a vastly different approach during an attempted gang rape by four street thugs: she shot and killed the first attacker; the 22-caliber bullet struck him between the eyes. And then, she shot the second attacker in the back as he tried to flee. Her legal case, by the way, was essentially thrown out of court on the grounds of self-defense. I’m not sure her creative expression that day was hell-bent on destroying anyone, but when attacked, I think she managed to lay all philosophy aside. Did that make her bad or more important than her attackers? Well, you be the judge.

    • @melanieforest4642
      @melanieforest4642 7 лет назад

      It’s not a question of deserving destruction, or anything else; it’s a question of self-preservation. What may be in your heart is hidden; it’s your actions that matter more, at least to others; it’s your conduct that will determine your fate ultimately. Essentially, my life is as good as anyone’s existence; it’s not better nor is it worse. If I’m attacked, however, like my second girlfriend, I reserve the right of self-defense; it’s something I’m not going to think about by the way.

    Great as always, Sensei! There are some haters and naysayers (AND I HOPE THAT YOU KNOW I AM NOT ONE OF THEM), who would try to say that because your uke has a small build, that is what makes this technique possible when the clinch is fully applied. I KNOW Aikido-Jujitsu-Chin-Na leverage works BETTER against strength most of the time--especially against the neck and shoulder! Haters will still hate, ignoramuses will still ignore! Anyway, if you think it might be worthwhile, you might want to take heed. If had the time and money, I'd volunteer--of course it's getting cold up there soon!! :)
