    Lots of excellent info in this video, Bob - Thanks!
    RE: Tools for beginners. If you can measure stuff (tape measure, yardstick, or even just a school ruler,) cut stuff (hand saw, hack saw, circular saw, or a jig saw,) make holes in stuff (drill and some bits,) sand stuff (sanding block, palm sander, random orbit sander, or even just a piece of sandpaper,) and attach/connect stuff (glue and clamps, screws and screwdrivers, or just a hammer and nails,) then you can make stuff. Measure, cut, sand, attach. Ok, maybe sand again. The most important tool is your motivation. Just get out there and try stuff.

      @SheppardOfDeath 8 лет назад +1

      +Mark Lindsay also for beginners, you can get a good Dremel for around 80 bucks that can be used for many different things like cutting, making holes, and sanding.

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC 8 лет назад +1

      SheppardOfDeath You're absolutely right. My reply was geared more toward getting people to think about the bare minimum needed to start. You can always move up from there. I don't think anyone started out with $50,000 worth of tools - and you don't need to. If you're able to do the basics like measure, mark, cut, sand, and attach, you can get started. Things like a Dremel are nice and can certainly do many of those jobs - and I do use mine a BUNCH. It is a good tool to add to the arsenal. But it's not absolutely required to make stuff.

      +Mighty Wood No, it's not like that. I use Logic Pro X and a bunch of plugins, ipad apps, real instruments, etc. I'm not sure how I'd turn all of that into an interesting video. Maybe at some point.

    Bob, great Q&A! I especially loved your answer on the limited tools questions. I think the biggest thing I like about "Making" is the problem solving. Projects where I need to figure out the best way to do something are the ones that keep my interest the most. I think that is a common trait among most makers no matter what medium they gravitate towards. Keep up the good work!

    Yeah, a lot of tools really aren't necessary to get stuff done. I built my first work bench/table (8'x3') in the middle of the night with a drill and a folding pruning saw (from my camping kit). It's super solid.

    As a programmer you really hit the nail on the head. Yes, I play in the shop on occasion too. THE most important thing for people who are creative is making something they care about. No matter if it is in bytes or wood. It is torture for a creative person to be shackled in the corporate machine working on things that don't scratch their engineering itch and have no personal value.

    Hey Bob, I love your channel and I love your videos! By no means have I ever seen my self "making stuff", but your videos truly inspire me to do just that. In fact, I'm a musician like you and I just started my RUclips channel a few days ago. So far, it's been so much fun and I'm learning so much of what you spoke about and more! I just want to say I loved this video because of how open and honest you were about the video-making process, transitioning into full-time content creation, the financial challenges, and all of the behind the scenes stuff. All of which are goals and dreams of mine and certainly stuff I'm experiencing now with content creation. So again, thank you for speaking about your own personal situation with your RUclips. Keep up the great work and I wish you lots more success!

    Hey, Bob, I'd love to see a short video on how you organize your shop projects using Trello. I know it's a departure from your normal format, but I think we'd all get some use out of it, since most of us are still using pencil and paper to sketch out projects before starting.

    Bob, thanks for addressing my question regarding overcoming your biggest challenge in 2016. As a hobbiest maker and novice RUclips content creator I face the same challenge of finding the most efficient process to make stuff, film it, edit it, and engage with social media all while still enjoying the making part of it. If you discover the "silver bullet" please pass along your experience as I am very interested in how you may overcome that challenge and personally learn from that. Cheers!

    Thank you for all the informations you gave . Very encouraging. I'm having troubles in the way to make videos. I start making stuff but I found myself nearly ending the job when I realize that I didn't take an important step on camera . So it's either continuing the work without making the video or restarting from the beginning with eventually a new piece of wood.

      My cousin does a blog on the side for fun since he really enjoys fixing things. He has his own website - johnfixesstuff.com - Anything he fixes around the house, his vehicles, etc he takes pics and writes about how to do it. He started to double his income when I told him he should link all the tools he uses or parts from Amazon through his account. So many people see things you use and I am sure they are interested in buying the same thing.
