    I got this old Evinrude 9.9 in much need of some TLC and a lot of parts to make it good again. I think I am up for a challenge of bring it back to a use able Outboard. It will probably need the lower unit replaced, the old one has a large crack in it . It will be in my next video. Don't forget to check it out.

    I understand why you like to get em started before going too far, makes sense, but I had no doubt it would run! Like I say, these are some of the most rugged OMCs ever...Those carbs are simple and bullet proof... Yeah the bowls get rusty, but new ones are only $30, the newer models use lousy carbs with cheesy plastic bowls/tops that are troublesome. Be careful with that high speed jet, let it soak in heavy carb cleaner, even a few thousandths of crud coating the inside bore will cause lean running at high speeds. Don't attempt to clean/ream the hole with a drill bit, this will only enlarge the hole and affect fuel flow...Like I say, this old girl was used in fresh water, has not been overheated, and definitely worth resurrecting...

    I am not sure what it is like in the States , it is getting increasingly harder to get parts for the older model outboards, I can't afford a new one, just to give you an idea, that 9.9 you are working on, running here you will pay upwards of $800.00 Australian, new you are looking at around $2000.00 - 5000.00 after that you might as well say $1000.00 per horse power unit.
    keep up the vids they are very informative and they can save time and money as you remove and refit , whilst we get to decide which avenue is best to take.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 лет назад +1

      Some of the parts are getting hard to find new. If you buy used you can get about anything you need if you are willing to pay a new price for it. You are right the price of new outboards cost a lot. That is why I started the repair videos to help the working guy have some quality time on the water with out spending a lot of money. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to have a good family day on the water. Thanks for commenting and Stay Safe!!

    I just got a 75 Johnson 9.9 for 100 it’s all there but what I got from your video was the ease of rotation of your flywheel my other outboard are really tight meant to me really good compression yours was very easy to turn but you also said you didn’t do it dry so that will raise compression I would like what your compression numbers are after you got that motor hot I also recommend that you use a tank on that motor not the ears

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 года назад

      You are right a tank is much better then the ear muffs. I haven't run a compression test on it hot so I don't know. I felt the 95 and 100 psi was not bad.

    I am curious how to set the lean rich adjustment you took off (you said: no need to count the turns...) because I have a 75 evenrude giving me problems and have had the carb off 3 times. I can't figure what I am missing. The motor runs great in a trash can or with the ear muffs supplying water but in lake tests it acts like its starving for fuel after a few minutes and stalls, then won't start. It has new water pump, fuel pump, fuel tank/hose, fresh fuel, new piints and pick up under the fly wheel.The moror has less than 300 hours.....been sitting for 5 years. Any advice is apreciated. Your video was very informative. thanks

      The carburetor mixture Adjustment
      1. Start the engine and run it in forward at one half throttle. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
      2. Turn the idle adjusting knob to full slow position.
      3.Run the engine at slow speed 700-800 RPM and adjust the low-speed needle until the highest consistent RPM is attained. Allow 15 seconds after each adjustment for the engine to respond.
      4. After the final adjustment is completed, turn the low-speed needle counterclockwise one eighth turn to prevent a lean condition, Particularly in neutral.
      5. Remove the mixture knob. Reposition it with its pointer down. Be care not to disturb position of low speed needle.
      6. Reduce engine speed and turn the idle speed adjustment to allow the engine to run at a minimum of 650 RPM in Forward.
      7. Run the engine in gear near full throttle for one minute. Quickly reduce speed to slow 700-800 RPM and shift into neutral. The engine should continue to run smoothly.
      8.If the engine stalls or pops, the mixture it too lean. Turn the needle counterclockwise 1/16 turn.Allow 15 seconds after each adjustment for the engine to respond. Repeat Step 7 to verify that the mixture adjustment is correct.

    great vid loads of help,
    I was wondering, are you going to replace the plastic seal that goes around your mixture screw, I noticed the previous owner had tried to fix this problem by placing that green stuff around it. I have been having problems with my motor changing performance as you go, upon inspection this plastic insert has completely gone, this then allows the mixture screw to wriggle when the motor is at high rev. I would also think it would allow air to enter as the needle unit sits loosely in the threads.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 лет назад

      You are right I did replace that plastic seal after the video. It did same thing as yours. I think I am going to replace the mixture screw too. I just like them to run like new. With a little work and patience it will. Thanks for watching and Stay Safe!!

    Do you know how to get those little lead plugs out to clean the passage to the idle adjustment needle?are replacements available?

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  6 лет назад

      Replacements come with the OEM Rebuild kits. I would make sure their in there. I have got kits both ways. If it is necessary to remove the lead shot for inspect passage for restriction or leaks. Gently pry up on lead shot with a sharp tool.. To install a new lead shot. Flatten shot with flat end punch and plastic mallet. Check for leakage. If I see a good flow coming out of the ports I don't take them out. Check out my video {The 4 Circuits of a carburetor}

    I have a question.
    I have a late 70's johnson 9.9.
    Will not run unless i spray starting fluid into the carb intake.
    I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump.
    Before the carb and fuel pump rebuild, it would idle but when i put it in gear and brought the rpms up it would die.
    After I rebuilt the fuel pump I did the blow test into it and it performed as it should.
    When I rebuilt the carburetor I took it all apart and soaked it in Berryman parts cleaner.
    Engine has spark and good compression.
    Anything else i missed?
    Thank you!

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 года назад

      I would check the gasket between the carb and block. If that is not it I would check the crank seals. You know that when the crank case goes in to low pressure to draw the gas up from the carburetor when the piston is going up the cylinder. If the seals leak it can not draw the proper amount gas in. You don't have that much low pressure to start with like 7 pounds. If the seal leak out some of your low pressure it can't draw the fuel. Then when the piston goes back down the cylinder you lose pressure when it draws the fuel in the cylinder. That is probably why when you spray starting fluid in it runs. Remember just like the reeds stop the pressure from blowing back through the carburetor the crank seals keep it from blowing around the crank. Check out my video the 4 circuits of a carburetor. Hope this helps

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 года назад

      @@jimcatx3090 If you can find a outboard that has not been worked on yet. That is a good find. Check out my latest video. Bought this motor on face book. I was told the motor just needs a little work and it will run good. I do like to bring these old motors back to life. Reminds me of when I went to Canada fishing when I was in my early 20s. I had bought a new Johnson 9.9 then I think it was a 1977. I thought I was something got rid Wizard outboard for the Johnson.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 года назад

      @Derrick Smiley I had a wizard I use to take to Canada fishing. Love that old motor. When I have one that will not stay running I start out with the basics. Spark, Fuel, Compression. The problem with some of those old motors the Crank Seals leak a little and the reeds don't seal all the way and compression is a little low. It is not just one thing that need fixed. So if you got a good air fuel mix and a good spark.The last thing is the low pressure need to draw the fuel in and the compression to fire it. I don't know that this helped that much but good luck and let me know what you find.

I used a reverse drill bit and drilled it out. Before the drill went all the way through the seat it broke loose and came out. It was just dumb luck. I don't have any good way to get them out either. Let me know what you try.

Im down in miami and its one of thoses muggy wet days but she just doesnt want to settle in 🙄 and now the dam recoil spring cracked lol not really a prob just annoying to wrap up

      The Service manual says start the engine and run engine to operating temperature. Then Turn the idle adjusting knob to full slow. adjust the low speed needle until the highest consistent RPM is attained wait 15 seconds for each adjustment. Then counterclockwise one eight turn to prevent lean condition. If engine starts to stall turn 1/16 Turn counterclockwise allow 15 seconds between adjustments until running smoothly. I have always done it like you 3/4 to 1 1/34 the larger the engine the more I turned it out. Make sure the gas and oil is fresh and right mix.

He usually knows if he has it without even looking. Huge graveyard of used engine, and a few railroad cars with shelves lined with used parts ready to ship. The website has a Google app that lets you walk through and see the inventory, but its a few years old and the inventory constantly changes. Good Luck.
