  • In this video I try ultra smooth paper with colored pencils, I talk about how really smooth paper can affect colored pencil drawing, or more specifically, ultra smooth paper. Typical paper for colored pencils is medium to smooth, with tooth to grab the media, on really smooth paper there is barely any tooth, will this paper work or ruin a drawing?

I've been using the entire range of Strathmore 100% cotton 500 series, for many years. My favorite of the 500 series is the Semi-smooth ( not well known for some reason) it is in-between the plate and vellum surface. I also use their Heavyweight mixed media board, completely different from the 500 series mixed media paper. The surface on the Heavyweight is a Vellum surface, but a bit more subtle and smoother. It's is 570gsm thick, it is like a lightweight binders board I use to produce some sketchbook covers lol. You can throw EVERYTHING at it, it's sized extremely well, and can even hold its weight with wet into wet watercolor work. The 500 series is the only paper I use from Strathmore, besides their 400 series toned papers, I wish they would make a 100% cotton 500 series toned papers. If I really need toned 100% cotton paper, my go to is the Stonehenge " colors " which happens to be my favorite paper for colored pencils, with a mix of 6 different colors of paper.

I do mostly graphite and charcoal work and love Legion's Stonehenge paper. It's 100% cotton, 250gsm but can hold a bit of wet media, and while I've never tried any of the toned colors, they do have a good selection of those that you might want to give a try if you haven't already!

This is the ONLY paper I use for commissions. And I totally agree with you….I only do “bust” portraits of animals. I have never enjoyed a more textured surface and I love the way I can blend my pencils on this 500 series paper. Thank you for your video!

Awesome! I definitely think it's high quality paper to work with. I do prefer bristol vellum though as my go to paper for most of my colored pencil drawings, it's fairly easy to do a number of different drawing textures with it and have some pretty smooth lines for fur texture. 😀

This paper is awesome. It works for my techniques. Burnished and blends great as long as you plan your layers and work carefully

Definitely agree on the plan your layers and work carefully, it is a little more difficult to blend using solvent on this paper, and you're very limited with those layers.

Love the video and your art work!
I asked Heather Rooney what paper she uses in her highly detailed drawings and she told me she uses smooth paper. So I purchased some Strathmore 500 Plate and used it on a coffee mug drawing that had a ton of detail. It worked pretty well. I was also experimenting with using Pan Pastels for the first time as a faster way of putting down a base layer. It worked out just OK. There are spots where I ran out of tooth on top of the Pastel. Needless to say I still prefer my Strathmore 500 Vellum.

I definitely prefer vellum best, or arches hot pressed watercolor paper, much easier to layer and get details.

You remind me of myself. I have a thing about testing on little scraps of whatever paper I want to use because I just can’t bear to risk a whole sheet to test something. I also find Bristol smooth nice for some subjects. I love your drawing of the lion.

I love this paper for fine detail/realistic drawings as you can use the slice tool for highlights like fur and relections without fear of damaging the paper. 😍

I use Borden & Riley 120 pound Bristol plate, Prismacolor pencils and Gamsol solvent... and I draw in many layers and it works very well on this smooth paper. I have even done a pastel drawing on this paper... but it was a bit challenging with such a smooth paper. Prismacolor colored pencils do work great though. I love smooth plate paper much more than textured paper.

This paper may work beautifully for Polychromos but for a more waxy pencil like Prismacolor, you need a paper with more tooth. I found that when I use smooth paper, my Prismacolor layers are less saturated the next day.

Very nice paper for layering, I wanted to ask if you can draw on both sides of this paper and get the same result, or is there a special side to draw on that looks better? Thank you

have you ever tried textured fixative to put on more layers? would be interesting🤔!
    i love your drawings.

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Год назад

I have not, and I'm not sure I would want to because fixative adds a texture and that would make it difficult to draw any fine details.

Hi! Thank you so much for this review. Just one question, would you recommend this paper for practice or finished drawings only? I want a pad/sketchbook where I can practice colored pencils but I don't like when my papers have too much texture, I also use prismacolor. Arches is a little bit too expensive rn

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart

I think it would work great for both practice and finished drawings, no harm in practicing on any paper you like! 😉
