  • Welcome to Day 9 of Somatic Kickstart, my transformative 30-day series designed to enhance nervous system regulation and improve your overall well-being. In today's guided somatic routine, we are focusing on releasing trauma stored in the spine. The spine serves as the central axis of our body, holding physical tension and emotional imprints that can impact overall well-being. This routine targets the intricate connection between the spine and the nervous system, offering transformative techniques for trauma release and relaxation.
    EXERCISES OF THE ROUTINE
    1) Torso Twists with Open Arms: Encourage the release of deeper tension while promoting a free flow of energy through the spine and shoulders.
    2) Cervical Spine Decompression: Gentle C-shaped spinal curves stretch and decompress trauma-prone regions, calming the nervous system.
    3) Rhythmic Cat and Cow Movements: Syncing breath with motion enhances the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and releases tension along the spine.
    4) Fluid Intuitive Motions: Leaning, rounding, and arching the spine encourages free movement, supporting emotional release and connection to the body’s rhythm.
    BENEFITS OF SOMATIC EXERCISES
    1) Enhanced Nervous System Regulation: Spinal mobilization activates the parasympathetic nervous system, fostering relaxation and reducing stress.
Improved Postural Alignment: By addressing protective postures caused by trauma, this routine restores natural spinal alignment.
    2) Deeper Emotional Release: Somatic exercises help release emotional tension stored in the spine, creating space for healing and resilience.
    3) Hydration of Connective Tissue: Gentle, intuitive movements hydrate the fascia and spinal discs, enhancing flexibility and reducing stiffness.
    4) Stimulation of the Vagus Nerve: Certain stretches, like cervical spine elongation, directly stimulate the vagus nerve, promoting a sense of safety and grounding.
    UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA IN THE SPINE
When we experience trauma, the body instinctively braces itself, tightening muscles and fascia to shield vulnerable areas. While this protective response is essential during moments of danger, chronic tension often remains long after the threat has passed. This tension, particularly along the spinal column, can lead to restricted mobility, discomfort, and a persistent sense of unease.
The fascia, a dense web of connective tissue surrounding the spine, is especially prone to holding trauma. Under stress, the fascia becomes dehydrated and rigid, further limiting movement and trapping emotional and physical stress. Over time, the body adopts compensatory postures-like a hunched back, stiff neck, or tight lower back-that reinforce the sense of tension and disconnection.
    WHY TRAUMA BECOMES "STUCK"
Trauma becomes lodged in the body when it is not fully processed or released. The nervous system, overwhelmed by the traumatic experience, may struggle to return to a baseline state of safety. Instead, it keeps the body in a state of readiness, holding onto tension as a form of protection. The spine, as a central support structure, often bears the weight of this unresolved trauma. This “stuck” trauma may manifest as chronic tension, reduced mobility, or persistent emotional discomfort. Without intentional release, these patterns can impact overall health, limiting both physical and emotional resilience.

Sitting like this feels challenging to me, hurts my lower leg. I am hoping with time this will become an easy thing for me. The ending spinal movement - i did mot move freely for the past two years. After getting injured a bit, i became afraid of moving. So this felt very freeing. Thnak you so much for sharing your wisdom with the world - words from a 24 year old girl ❤️

I love your routines! I’m curious, however: I’ve heard that trauma is stored in the hips, but from what I’ve seen your routines only involve the upper body. Why is that?

    • @sheBREATH_Teresa
      @sheBREATH_Teresa  28 дней назад +1

Thanks for the question! Short answer: I like routines where I am sitting. Long answer: I have had the experience from myself and clients that when starting out they like to sit because standing routines are too much for them. For some, even getting out of bed is a big step. I simply wanted to help as many as possible. You can always do seated routines standing, but you can most likely not do standing routines seated.
Trauma is stored in the whole body and depending what it is that could include the hips, but it is not solely in the hips. For example, grief, shame and guilt are all stored in the upper body and most of the time at least one of those aspects is tied to the trauma that was experienced.
I do have a trauma release video focusing on the hips….seated 😉 And I will have standing videos coming as well. 🫶🏼
