This NEW European Wind Turbine for Home Out Perform PV Solar Panels in 2024?!

  • The O-Wind Turbine was invented by two students from Lancaster University in the UK, who won the James Dyson Award in 2022 for their innovative design. The device consists of a spherical structure with vents that allow the wind to flow through it from any direction. The wind causes the sphere to spin around a fixed axis, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity. The device is small, lightweight, and easy to install, making it ideal for urban and residential areas where space is limited and wind conditions are unpredictable. Unlike conventional wind turbines, the O-Wind Turbine does not require a minimum wind speed, direction, or height to operate, and it does not produce any noise or visual pollution.

    Instead of being in competition, turbines and solar panel should complement each other. One works only in the sun, while the other works when there is no sunlight. The use of both generation systems guarantee 24 hour per day electricity generation.

    Keep in mind power is P[W]=½*ρ*A*V³*Cp (where ρ=1.225 air density, A=area of turbine in m², V=wind speed in m/s and Cp is a in range 0.1 for this turbine - you can check, it's widely known equation). So turbine of diameter 3 foot can create about 10W of energy at the wind 6.5m/s (which is a quite strong for urban locations).

    • @onthemove301
      @onthemove301 5 месяцев назад +5

      I'm not a scientist so maybe I'm getting this wrong? If you're measuring wind speed per second, then 10w per second is one kW every 100 seconds, or about 35kWh? Obviously a storage battery would be useful.

    • @bialy100k
      @bialy100k 5 месяцев назад +19

      @@onthemove301 Yes, you getting bit wrong. You mixing units of power and energy. Watt is a unit of power (not energy!). So 1 hour of 10W power generation is a 10W x 1h = 10Wh = 0.010kWh of energy. Daily it will be 24 x 0.01=0.24kWh production of energy. I use around 11kWh daily at my very average home (at USA typical consumption is a usually 2-2.5 times bigger ). So potentially for cover my needs I have to install no less than 50 of same "wind turbines" (as long is a windy enough and they are really REALLY efficient as they say).

    • @bialy100k

      @@iknowbetter5075 Electricity generator is a "second thing" - first you have a energy source (wind). Generator is a only tool to change mechanic energy of the wind to the electric. Of course it have to be enough efficient. There was systems totally without "electricity generation" - probably you saw old "American turbines" with a characteristic tower and many (24?) flat wings around. which was pumping water. They was strictly mechanical.

This wind turbine looks extremely promising and it could possibly be added to my existing set up as long as its output could be sent via a mains phase controlled inverter. As soon as it's market ready, I'll be sure to be looking out for the

It fills the gaps overnight in particular but would also add to generation during the day, and if not needed, charge the battery or export to the grid. Here's hoping but potentially the market for this is off the charts if you could supply and install for under $1000.

    At 3:55 the narrator claims "the turbine claims to have a power output of 200 kWh, which is enough to power a small appliance...." This is nonsense, or the video's producer just doesn't understand energy. All that matters is the power output in watts, for a certain diameter, at a certain wind speed. If that little one generated, say, 200W at 8 mph, that would be fairly respectable. Since output is directly dependent on what we call 'swept area', and since this turbine has a minimal swept area, I suspect the output is disappointingly low.
    It is very, very difficult to compete with photovoltaic panels. They sit there, almost maintenance free, for decades and continue to produce power. I have a thirty-two year old set of Kyoceras still on the job!

Just as long as we're not killing the planet Because like our wind farms. They haven't been able to recycle him. And some may have, but a lot of it goes to land waste. Anything we build, we should be able to recycle it 100% or don't build it. Unfortunately, we don't use common sense in the world. But I do like these new ideas. 8:01

    At face value, this sounds good but the devil is in the details. At this time, there are no spec's available and these have not been commercialized yet so no pricing or delivery timeframes. These will need to go through IEC / UL testing for small wind turbines to generate a power curve for each model or size for which they will produce so customers can have realistic expectations about power generation at various wind speeds and conditions. Urban wind turbines are notorious for poor power performance and economics. At best, this is a long-shot with a high risk of failure and there is no guarantee that the company will be able to get the needed certification testing and then be able to manufacture these at a price that makes economic sense...

Our whole house and car charging is around 200-350 kWh per month. I think they are confusing their kilo watts and kilo watt hours. "PV solar panels have a typical power output of 250 kWh per square meter". Again this is nonsense. A typical solar panel these days produces around 400 watts in ideal conditions which in an hour would produce 0.4 kWh. He is talking about watts not kilo watt hours. He says the O-wind turbine uses water for cooling. Really? Existing wind turbine tech is good and getting better. This new design may have some potential in some situations but they will need to be much bigger than a football.

    It appears to me that having solar and wind is better if you can keep the install costs down. DYI.

      Oh wake up will you! I've seen dozens of things like this. Looks just like every other 'fantastic' vapourware product. Made to drain investors of their hard earned cash and nothing more. It will never make it to market because it is not worth buying.

    Not too many generator motors can output that much power. You still need a high enough wind speed to put out power they are claiming.

    Let us know when it’s actually available. Power claims etc are meaningless until then

    No datasheet on the website, not worth the attention. File it under the next pretty high tech boondoggle thingy that will probably not work. (Sorry, seen to many wind turbines during my research) the only interesting feature is the 0 shade effect.

    One of the major issues with solar panels is they contain toxic materials and typically aren’t recycled

    Unfortunately for you daylight is more reliable than the strength of wind needed to get power from a wind turbine.

    will never make it off the ground, just like the Savonious turbine... very small area of power catchment, too small to make a difference big enough for me to buy one... i'll stick with props and a 6x swept area...

      Both are correct. It just spends on where you live. I say "ter-bine" but I don't criticize people who say it differently.

    Any Vertical Turbine doesnt care about the winddirection, so nothing new here. And to measure the effectiness you only need to do a simple comparison with other VTs. And THEN, we will see.
