Really good to see Danya explain advanced concepts to a new audience in such a simple straight forward way. So many strong players would balk at a beginner asking why the horse is called a knight, but Danya is so straight forward, factual, and nonjudgmental and totally gets it
Definitely, he's great at that: he also pointed out patiently during the pawn fork why the rook can safely take the knight (because it's protected by the pawn) if the king steps forward (also, FYI, it's “balk”: bock is a type of beer, balk means to refuse to do something)
i really like the way Daniel explains opening theory. he talks much more about the general IDEA of an opening, and what the first 5 or 6 moves are trying to accomplish, rather than going into specific lines and variations. I have a feeling that general ideas in the opening is all you need until you're like 2200 or something, so this type of instruction is very helpful
For sure, because if you know what the point is, you can make educated moves around that, some are very specific and you need to know lines but most are usable as long as you know the first 5-6 and then make moves that fit the structure of what you’re trying to accomplish because most of the time you’ll make a top 3 move and you’ll be fine
As soon as you’re 1600, people generally know the main lines. Going down a specific variation can grant you an advantage very early in the game. 2200 is way too far ahead to be learning theory
I'm trying to remember; when I was 400 elo, I tried to memorize opening lines and I would get some good opening, but by the time I was in the middle game, I didn't know what was going on. I like Danya style. I think it helps beginners to see the ideas in the position.
this is really not an opening you can play on generell ideas. there is opening theory and opening systems. with opening systems it is good enough to have the generell idea. but for theoretical positions you cant really figure out with just principles you have to know the perfect answer to keep even.
Thanks so much for all the speedrun series! I was stuck between 1000 and 1200 for so long but thanks to your great teaching I managed to skyrocket my play, I learned to apply all the principles, memorized multiple lines in my openings and trained my tactical vision by playing regularly, also switched to 10 min instead of 3, when i finally hit the breakthrough a couple weeks back I started winning almost every single game I play, often getting +90% accuracy in the openings I'm familiar with, crossed 1500 and still climbing with almost no losses, even at this level most games are lost due to opponent's tactical blunders and as long as you apply principles and know your openings your oponent will make them way more often than you will so if you guys think like you hit a wall, don't worry, you'll hit the breakthrough at some point as long as you follow Danya's teaching, definitely look up some openings too, especially how to play against the ones you often find yourself losing to.
Mad props to the opponent for giving a good battle and going all the way through. I hope they realize that they are doing a service to the greater good of learning from this games with Danya for not rage quitting and going all the way through. Also 15 mins seems to be the sweet spot for Danya to play and having enough time to explain the games

I wish Danya made an opening playlist where he shows more variations, not just 2-3 like he does in speedruns. Danya is very good at explaining the ideas behind specific openings. Most opening videos just show you the line and that's it. They don't explain WHY you play these concrete moves, Danya does.
At 21:05, Knight D5 does lead to mate in 4 if the king goes to a6, and mate in 3 if the king goes to a5 or b5, since the queen will get to b4 and the knight will get to c7 afterwards. I found this mate before finding the mate in two, since putting a knight in front of a pawn is more fashionable.
Your content is so enjoyable. I only play bullet and I'm 1400 and I get mooost of everything you say usually while playing, while demonstrating basic playing concepts and then it's so mindblowing all the possibilities that you went through while playing.
One of the best ways to learn and improve is to go over games of strong players against significantly inferior opposition. This is what Daniel is doing here. But this is even better because it's like having a chess coach in your living room. The summaries and the opening ideas are invaluable. Many thanks!
It would be awesome if you did some kind of white/black repertoire series at some point, I tried preparing my own repertoire with the computer and the database but it's really hard to see some ideas behind computer best moves when preparing an opening, also while playing accelerated dragon and the vienna there's a lot of people playing the rossolimo or playing 2. Bb4 in the vienna or even just playing 1. e4 g6 and playing it like a modern/KID and really getting me out of the comfort zone despite me already having analyzed and memorized so many lines, would be nice to have some sort of repertoire series where all responses or at least basic ideas are covered, especially against some rare and dubious but very dangerous moves

I would go for Nd5 in 20:00 tbh. If he plays Kb5, Qb4+, Ka6 and Na6+ mate. If he goes for Ka5, still Qb4+, Ka6, and Na6+ mate. If he goes for Ka6, Qa3+, Kb5, Qb4+, Ka6, and Nc7+ mate. Looks nicer when more white pieces are hanging and mating sequence can be done longer when the opportunity arises. Thanks for the match play and recap btw, appreciate what you do for the game danya!
The variation got its name apparently bc there’s a fantasy land of ideas or something. You short castle and get your rook on the f file, you get to keep the full center with fxe4 if black were to exchange pawns on move 3, etc I don’t really remember the other ideas 😅

Don't take my comment in the wrong spirit. I thoroughly appreciate what Danya is doing here. But this sudden shift towards playing lower rated opponents was kind of a bummer. I was enjoying the higher level games where obvious blunders are fewer and we get to learn more fine concepts. Anyway, it's still good and a great learning resource for me.
Hey man don't worry too much, he said that he was playing a lower rated player and explaining things more slowly because of Charlie's stream joining his, as Charlie isn't a strictly chess streamer. I'm sure he'll be back to the 1800 videos in no time at all!
Personally I find these games really helpful and interesting. I love watching GM games just as a place to watch and enjoy really high level players battling it out. However, it can be difficult to learn from at times, as there is a level of theory that you cant really apply without a really in-depth understanding of the openings. Also there are high level concepts that don't always abide by the rules I have learned to play solid chess at my elo. I really like seeing the contrast of a GM speaking about unsound, bad or even good moves that his lower rated opponent plays. Also, I guess as these videos continue I guess the player skill level will continue to grow, and they will start employing higher level concepts.

That is literally what his entire speed run series has been about, he started below a thousand and was 1860, but he decided to play a 1200 today, which although a one time thing, kind of a bummer cause I already play the fantasy and I’m higher rated so I can’t really learn anything. I think he should have coupled this upload with the following 1860 speed run, as we know he has them on twitch.

It really depends on the opening. Playing an open sicilian using just general ideas and principles will often leave you in a bad position.

Lichess has some good studies with full opening repertoires and listudy lets you test yourself on these studies

You can donate subscriptions that the streamer can divy out.
It's just like buying a subscription for a twitch streamer which costs $5 but for 5 people simultaneously.
