One of the worst parts (I don't say THE worst because that is obviously the harm done to the animal) is that the fin does not add flavor to the soup. High end chefs who produce it claim it's more of a garnish than anything and the soup would still taste the same without the fins.
I have this recorded and saved from when they first aired it. It makes it realize that we shouldn't fear them because they are rapidly being wiped off the face of mankind and luckily some are surviving in aquariums or there's actually places that preserve them and not them any great harm.
I witnessed this today for the first time on tv unfortunately. How can someone drag an animal out of it’s environment, disable it whilst it’s still conscious and then just throw it’s limbless body back into the ocean?! It’s sickening and it made feel so distraught to the point of crying uncontrollably. Can you even imagine what these shark’s have to endure? It’ll probably die soon after for what? I wish I never saw it and I wish it wasn’t real. The cruelty really breaks my heart.
My thing is why throw the poor shark into the water to die? WHY NOT EAT THE WHOLE SHARK??? Atleast then it'll have a quick death and have its death be honored and prepared to perfection with good sauces and spices But no.

this takes animal cruelty to another whole level... Imagine someone cutting off your arms and legs, while you're still conscious, and then throwing you in the ocean, only to sink to the deep bottom ocean floor. Poor helpless sharks...
I personally don't think we need to stop eating shark fin. I think we just need to utilize as much as the shark as we can. Use all the meat you can from it don't just throw it back to just die like that. Kill them as quickly as possible to minimize the suffering and don't waste it.
I've always thought sharks are scary, and still kinda do. Taking a zoology class and looking up more information helped me understand more about many creatures, as well as sharks. I never had shark fin soup but I don't think I want to try it.. this is VERY wasteful.. poor sharks.
its not the fact that sharks are being killed that bothers us the most(though that does bother), its that they are being slaughtered to the point where their population has gone down by 90% in just the last 20-25 years and sharks have a major role in EVERY living thing's survival
@@_E____ That's what you basically would get anyway. Shark fin soup often has little to do with sharks or fins, but is a chicken soup, lightly thickened with potato starch, with strings of chicken and egg.

this hurts my heart - sharks are beautiful creatures that have been here since the dinosaurs and it seems that greedy humans will be the cause of their untimely death
The reason they discard it is not because they can't use the meat, but rather when they go out for fishing (months at a time) it is not worth it financially to keep the meat. Fins are $15-25 an ounce (or pound, idk) while shark meat is like $2-3 a pound. They would rather keep a boat filled with fins than one filled with shark meat... hence why they chuck it overboard after they get the fins but in all reality it still doesn't make it right
though knowledge is power; the delicacy of shark fin soup is such a cultural norm in most Asian countries, it may take years to fully educate people. even more difficult is to elicit empathy from people who contribute to the demand. simply put, people with money and power may not care about the consequences of their actions.
Over 8,000 tons of shark fins are processed each year. The fins only amount to 4% of a shark's bodyweight. This means that some 200,000 tons of shark are thrown back into the sea and discarded. 11,300 hourly, 100millions Sharks were killed annually. Already 18 species of sharks have been listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Also shark fin soup is extremely popular in China town in Yokohama, Japan. I got speechlessness and shocked by the fact that every single Chinese restaurant there was offering the expensive soup. The definition of the word "life" can be quite vague in some countries. Apparently some living creatures have less of it than others... Solution: Don't eat or buy shark products, less consumption means less demand, and with time fishermen will realize there is a much more profitable market besides the wasteful act of shark fin cutting...in the end it all comes down to the consumer. On the other hand, try telling that to someone who has never thought twice about where their food comes from.
I hate people who eat sharks. People need to respect them for what they are. Only 5 people die from shark attacks each year. That means that there is a higher chance that a vending machine will fall over and kill you. So please everybody, don't kill sharks because if we didn't have them the whole food chain would be messed up.

I agree amiebuffalo. However. I think that if we hunt an animal, and only use a small part of it, I think we should use more of it so it isn't put to waste. Sure, there is a lot of things we can eat, and we tend to take more than needed. But people need to eat. We kill cows for beef. Chicken and turkey for poultry. Some eat bugs and bats, others eat snakes and sea horses. In a way, what we eat has balanced one another out. We don't just eat one of the categories or one would have been extinct.
The best thing is that the soup doesn't even taste good, at all. The reason people eat this expensive soup is to show how prosperous they are. Let that sink in. We torture sharks to death and extinction, just to show off basically. Never mind that it destroys the entire ocean eco system. Shark soup is emblematic of everything that is wrong with us.
I've been wading through countless National Geographic videos, from world pollution, to being kidnapped by terrorists, and now to this. So far, I'm not feeling very good about the human species. I can't even live life without some sort of guilt hanging over my head now.
(cont.) This is not comparable to eating beef because sharks are apex predators; they reproduce slowly and cannot rebound from being hunted. Yes, sharks caught and finned ARE endangered, even if they are not officially listed as such - Atlantic hammerheads have declined by 90% but still are not protected under CITES.
Shark need to constantly swim to keep water flowing through their gills. Without fins, they lose flight-stabilization. And roll-dive right to the bottom of the ocean. And eventually suffocate to death.
I personally find it a horrendous idea to simply eat what keeps you moving. As humans, I think we now should do the opposite: live to eat. Eating for pure survival just makes life a tad dull and I believe humans have evolved beyond that point.
oh shit! i agree with the wrong idea of harvesting the fins of the shark, but what if the people took the entire fish instead of just one piece? Hunting animals for food is considerably normal but not when a large portion of it is discarded. I for one love shark fin soup it's truly a delicacy, so for those who aren't aware, that should probably sum up why people ill simply cut off the fin and ditch the rest, it's of high value.
It's probably because of the famines they had. To them i say Famines are over now - please reconsider what you do - and i say as regards 'Chinese medicine' just because a rhino is a powerful beautiful creature does not mean it has special powers to cure you or make you stronger. This is the 21st Century.
I happened to be Canadian born Chinese and grew up in a community of Caucasians and was always ashamed with how I looked apart and had racist remarks but as I gotten older, I learned to appreciate my Asian Heritage due to its rich history and culture in China with Dynasty Warriors, Traditional Chinese Medicines/Oil/Herbs, Martial Arts, Religion but these practices with what theyre doing by killing those sharks and also if you noticed, the Chinese even kill dogs too to serve as a tradition for a yearly festival called Yulin makes me sorta embarrassed for my race sometimes.
Why don't people realize how essential these beautiful sharks are to our ecosystem! Killing off all of them will bring disastrous consequences in the long run for us as well as them. People are so stupid and selfish. BAN SHARK FINNING!
The way they just throw them back into the ocean, still alive, still conscious. With no fins, no way to move, get food, live their lives, only to sink to the bottom of the ocean and die 😔
There is a remarkable difference between Western prophecies and those of native peoples. When Western prophets see into the future they envision Armageddon. The end of the world. When native prophets look down that same path they see the completion of a great cycle."Only after the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten."

So far, I'm not feeling very good about the human species. I can't even live life without some sort of guilt hanging over my head now.
It may be, but if done by this method, I wouldn't have the heart to touch it. This is humans at their worst

This is not comparable to eating beef because sharks are apex predators; they reproduce slowly and cannot rebound from being hunted. Yes, sharks caught and finned ARE endangered, even if they are not officially listed as such - Atlantic hammerheads have declined by 90% but still are not protected under CITES.
I heard about this when I went on a field trip to sea world.
Shark need to constantly swim to keep water flowing through their gills. Without fins, they lose flight-stabilization. And roll-dive right to the bottom of the ocean. And eventually suffocate to death.
I feel horrible, my dad went to japan and ate this.
I personally find it a horrendous idea to simply eat what keeps you moving.
As humans, I think we now should do the opposite: live to eat. Eating for pure survival just makes life a tad dull and I believe humans have evolved beyond that point.
I agree...eat the whole shark..then you got bragging rights..make a jazzy necklace from the teeth...etc...
its called demand. plus, whats the difference between killing a shark for it's fins and killing a chicken for its wings, thighs, and breasts?
When people were normal, for the time of the 1990's and below, no one would kill any animal. This people are sick.
They watch too many shark movies thinking they are mindless killers, when in reality they are harmless victims.
let me just yeet the universe for a quick sec
oh shit! i agree with the wrong idea of harvesting the fins of the shark, but what if the people took the entire fish instead of just one piece? Hunting animals for food is considerably normal but not when a large portion of it is discarded. I for one love shark fin soup it's truly a delicacy, so for those who aren't aware, that should probably sum up why people ill simply cut off the fin and ditch the rest, it's of high value.
It's probably because of the famines they had. To them i say Famines are over now - please reconsider what you do - and i say as regards 'Chinese medicine' just because a rhino is a powerful beautiful creature does not mean it has special powers to cure you or make you stronger.
This is the 21st Century.
wow you seem a little racist
We have totally different thoughts about this. v_v It's around 10 people worldwide who's getting killed by sharks.
And you don't feel in the slightest bit responsible? Ever heard of supply and demand?
Humans are the most cruel and disgusting animals to ever exist no cap.
When native prophets look down that same path they see the completion of a great cycle."Only after the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten."
i am so sad now, shark help to control the sea from tsunami, the lesser they are, the more tsunami we have
