Tillicim and the other Orca's were/are suffering from major animal abuse at the hands of the Sea World higherups. There is an entire documentary about it called Black Fish. Sea World had plenty of forewarning that Tillicim was becoming more and more aggressive and did nothing about it because it would hurt their bottom line. They even used the trainers as a scape goat when things started to heat up.
Best way to think about it is imagine yourself in prison for many years, and you were never given any reason for your sentencing, and you slowly go crazy because you have no freedom, you get angry and one day you snap and go for one of the guards...that's essentially the environment they were kept in, and being intelligent creatures, it comes to no surprise, that anger and claustrophobia boiled over into assaulting humans.
@@hilaryjuliecoxon5434 Fortunately they came out a while back and said that they wouldn't have any more orcas. The ones they already had would still be there to live out the rest of their lives, but no new orcas would (or have) been brought in

Tilikum is a tragic tale of an orca that was kidnapped from its family by humans at a young age to entertain humans. Then being attacked by other orcas of the pool. He had every right to hate humans for what they did.
@@jensensolace4948 He was an animal. He didn't have the same capacity that a human has to think and process things. Yes, it's tragic that he killed them, but his aggression was primarily driven by his life circumstances (his kidnapping as a calf, being sold to SeaLand (basically what came before SeaWorld) and abused by being kept in a pool too small for one orca alone but that housed him and three dominant females who bullied him, and even in that show with Dawn he got frustrated because he missed the cue that told him he had completed his behavior (the official word for "trick") and so he didn't get a reward when he thought he should've and that caused him to miss more cues and get more frustrated). I'm not saying that he should've killed anyone, but he didn't have the ability to understand and reason like humans do, and his abuse led him to think that violence was the answer to every problem
@@jensensolace4948 He was not bound by any rights, duties or moral system invented by humans in the first place. He belonged in the ocean and was bound by the rules of nature there. The humans at Sea World shouldn't have kept him in a small pool. The humans should have known they were at risk, and the ones at the top should have informed the trainer she was at serious risk (since it happened before). It was a tragedy yes, but the only ones to blame are the people who put him in the pool or went in there with him.
Two out of three, yes. Intelligent, humans are not. Orcas don't 'get along' with humans - they tolerate humans because Orcas are fully aware when they have no choice.
Great video! Just wanted to let you know the death of Dawn was actually at the end of the show not the beginning. After the afternoon dining with Shamo show Dawn was playing g with Tillicim in the pool where she was at as hugging him and doing some interactions that were like a little performance for all the kids and other people leaving the show. She was dragged in by her hair or her arm (there are witnesses who say both it’s never been fully confirmed what area he grabbed) they believe he was upset and frustrated because during the show he didn’t perform a task correctly so Dawn did what she was supposed to do and didn’t reward him with the food. It was a trick that had him circling the length of the pool waving his fin to the crowd and then when he heard the whistle to come back to the trainer and he would get food. He did the waving of the fin but he didn’t hear the command to come back so he continued waving and circling until the second or third whistle when he finally hear what Dawn was asking him to do. He had been known to be frustrated and would literally bang his head into the walls of his tank because he was just bored and had nothing to occupy his time. He was also captured in the wild and separated from his mother. When he arrived at his first park he was severely bullied by two female whales who attacked him especially at night when they would be locked away in this modified shacks that went around their tanks and made their enclosure even smaller. Like 1/3 the size of the tank in Orlando. The whales were constantly fed smaller amounts of food because it would make them easier to train because they would be more willing to do what the trainer wanted because it meant food. Dawn died because Tilli got frustrated because he didn’t have an outlet to swim away or do what he wanted. Imagine being forced to live in a bathroom with two of your classmates that you probably don’t even get along with. You can’t leave the bathroom and the two people you live with are from different families, cultures, backgrounds, etc. when you get mad you can’t go anywhere you just have to live there in that bathroom for life! Tilli didn’t attack Dawn because he wanted to hurt and kill her (that is what former trainers who worked with him, Dawn, and other whales have said) he was frustrated and he lashed out like a toddler having a tantrum. Except this toddler is a 5 ton killer whale who literally ripped her arm off, scalped her, played with her corpse, and then proceeded to guard her body for more than an hour refusing to allow the other trainers and staff to remove her body from the tank.
@@sroy9789 happy to. I have watched a lot of documentaries on Sea World and how they are behind a. Good majority of all marine parks. Even ones they claim to have no association with, there have been people who did some digging and found shady connections that are pretty damning. Sea world has spent so much money trying to bury their disgusting practices that have led to the suffering of thousands of animals and humans. They have tried to blame the trainers and said they violated safety policies which is flat wrong. Sea world has covered up injuries, illnesses, and breading practices because they don’t care about who they hurt as long as they get to keep making money. Dawn was only doing what she was trained to do and what she had done before 1,000s of times. She is not at fault. Tillie was simply frustrated and reacted like any animal who feels cornered, he knew Dawn and did have a connection with her but, it doesn’t matter if Tillie wasn’t trying to hurt her. He was an Orca who has teeth strong enough to crush the meat angle bones of a great white shark, even biting down at half of his power would have been devastating to any human body. Humans are very fragile sacks of bones and meat, we are not going to have a good outcome when an orca puts any part of our body in their very powerful jaws and bites down (even if it’s only slightly).
@@KatlynJShute Saw a pic of Tilly's teeth in dodo, they were in very bad condition with holes in them. He must have been in a lot of pain. Wish they had done something about it. These animals need to be set free.

Most people that talk about Orca in this generic manner, even WATOP, tend to generalize them as the "cruel, killing machines". I have seen a different side of them. I have a friend that works around Orca most of the year. One day, he discovered that their matriarch had gotten stuck, trying to get at some fish that hide in shallow water. The tide had gone out earlier than usual. He checked on her condition, to see if she was sick. Satisfied that she was not, he began digging a path for her to get back into the water, using a water pump to flood it, so that it worked like a water slide. He was able to get her back into the water quickly. Using a water jet, he followed her back to her pod, to see if she developed any problems from being stuck. If you don't know, their own weight can crush their insides, even injuring them. He described to me what he believes was her telling them about the experience. He said: "At one point, they all turned their attention to me. Their matriarch approached, made some kind of vocalization, before moving off to the side. From there, a few of them began hitting me with echolocation while she watched. In the end, it made me pretty sore. I think she made them stop. She made a short bark just before they quit." He went on to say that shortly after, one of the matriarchs daughters brought him a fish and, stated that they only shared food with family. I was able to dive with him after this and, can testify that they treat him like family. Once, he and I got charged at by a white shark. Quickly, two orca were on the creature, ramming it. Another stayed with us, until the shark left the area.
Orcas are smart and picky eaters. Humanity only appeared recently, around 200,000 years ago while orcas were around for 11 million years. And we only explored the oceans for a brief amount out of the 200,000 years. And even if they do develop a taste for humans, much like wolves they will still avoid us because they know we can shoot at them with harpoon or guns. And also, they know tourist give them treats after a performance as they often perform when on camera and leave as soon as people put down their camera.
Not ALL movie depictions of orcas portray them as sweet and affectionate toward people. I remember a movie I saw when I was a kid back in the 80s. It starred Richard Harris (Dumbledore from the first two Harry Potter films). At the beginning of the film, Harris' character kills the female of a pair of orcas and for the remainder of the movie that female's mate it hunting Harris. It was actually a really good movie. (NOTE: Just 'imdb'ed the movie and it was simply called Orca and was released in 1977; I just didn't see it until the 80s since I myself was only "released" in late 1975. Definitely woth watching at least once for anyone who is interested.)

Important to note that those human killings have only happened with orcas that have spent years and years locked up in small pools with little to nothing to do, but perform shows day in day out. Imagine being trapped in a bathtub for a decade. Alone. Paraded around in a slightly bigger bathtub for 60 minutes 6 days a weeks and the back in your bathtub with nothing to do. You'd go insane too.
@@ChodyRay I don't believe your comment was sarcastic, just want to say that while orcas have sunk a few small boats and bit a surfer in the '70s, they have never killed a human in the wild.
Well I think it's boredom in the tanks. There really isn't much for them to do in small tanks and we know what orcas do with seals when bored, what makes humans so different to them? In the wild where they have pods and plenty of sea creatures to keep themselves occupied were not toys and there willing to help humans as well.

@@Eli_73999 Yes, I agree. But I'm talking about slaughter houses, I'd wager that high quality slaughter houses slaughter the animals painlessly by running electric currents, knocking the animals unconscious, you can't feel pain when you're unconscious. Even traditional slaughtering practices such as cutting the major artery or something for a quick death is less painful than being torn in half, being eaten alive or being tossed numerous times around before being eaten. Death by pollution is an indirect way that animals are killed but not relevant in what I'm comparing.
I wouldn’t say humans are cruel predators, I think most people would try to be as humane as possible. That said, with 7 billion people, there ofc will be outliers.
I have to say that after i watched Blackfish part 1 (2013) it is clear that Tillikum had severe psychological disorders from being held in captivity. He got ripped away from his family in the ocean, he was being bullied by older whales in captivity, (like every ither captive whale) he had to live ubder the worst circumstances an orca can live under (little concrete tank without anything else besides him in it). He was not „a predator that remembers its true nature“ he had several psychosis. The trainers described him as willing to learn and actually very nice. He exploded in the situations he killed someone. He wasnt aggresive, orcas are not aggresive or at least not more than humans. They are just like us. At the end of his life he just floated in his tank without moving for hours at a time (in nature zhey wouldn do that longer than a few minutes)
He actually killed 2 possibly 3 people. When he was at the aquarium in Victoria, he was isolated in a small dark pen every night. That would make anyone go crazy. He was only wanted at Seaworld for his sperm. It was so sad
In the positive, he lived a longer life than most orcas and fathered a lot of orcas. From being a bullied orca to being the most famous and respected orca in captivity ever.
They are kept in too small of spaces they swim 5,800 mile round trips for their migrations and generally swim 40 miles a day and dive 100 to 500 feet, not enough stimulation and activity and they don't get the family socialization they would normally get from their pod, pods can be from 5 to 30 whales some can even combine to form a group of 100 sometimes. Seaparks in captivity is not how they should be living. It would be like having a human live in a 15 squarefoot bathroom being brought meals and never leaving that space and in isolation.
You ever feel like you're in a time period as a human where you're stuck between two giants fighting it out? This is what it feels like to see orcas and whales fight.
Apparently it all started with Orkid, an orca from Seaworld San Diego. She's so intelligent the trainers nicknamed her the "Rocket Scientist." At least that's what I read in a book...
the way those trainers in the circus kiss and hug this huge animal stuck in a stupid tank to amuse people is like such a fake affection to poor animal wow huh
I wish you mentioned how orcas are extremely intelligent and used to vast ocean and they have complex social structures, and so keeping them in SeaWorld is a peak of cruelty and that's precisely why, out of sadness, boredom and despair, they kill humans when they have a chance (as Tilikum did)

They don't have hands or feet, so they can't switch between water and land. They cant make anything new or invent things (cause no hands), and they are probably bored all the time because all they do is swim. Humans have it quite easy being able to distract themselves with videos, or activities outside of just walking (From what I've seen, Orcas cannot stop swimming for long periods of time or they will drown). It shows that humans hunting as a sport (TO BE CLEAR, I DO NOT MEAN HUNTING ANIMALS TO EXTINCTION OR HUNTING ENDANGERED ANIMALS. The fact that the only Orca attacks have been reported in captivity just goes to show how intelligent they are. They probably realize they are just entertainment for humans at those sea circus shows and it bothers them to a great extent, along with being trapped in such a tiny space and separated from their pod.
The way they can actually communicate I wonder what would happen if captive orcas were set free and told the wild orcas of the cruelty they subjected to by humans if they were intelligent enough for revenge attacks might become common

This short clip provides misguided information about orcas in captivity. Tillikum, as all whales and dolphins in captivity, was abused and kept prisoner in a very unnatural and inhumane environment, for years. He was brutally kidnapped by men in fast boats, torn from his family at a young age (some died during this hunt and his family members were recorded to be crying and moaning in grief when he was taken away by the boat). These very intelligent animals are our human equivalent. They have their own culture that is passed down from generation to generation, communicate in a dialect specific to their pod, and are very close knit in their family groups. It was tragic that Dawn was killed by Shamu, but it is a more important to acknowledge that humans have no right to subject these sentient beings to serve us.
This guy: “Whale’s aren’t very smart!” Scientists: *They have a pretty high level of intelligence when compared to a lot of other animals. They’re able to learn new things, communicate in complex languages, and most importantly enjoy having fun which only the most intelligent animals do.*

Obviously you’re completely unaware of why someone would elect veganism over the horror of animal consumption. So let’s talk. Animal ag uses 3x the billions of lbs of antibiotics a year - of our entire medical system. That means a finite resource whose efficacy is reliant on its lack of abuse is losing its ability to work. We’ve only had antibiotics since the mid 1900s and soon the only hope will be the not so understood, extraordinarily expensive alternative- phage therapy. Animal products also lead to heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Plenty of peer reviewed papers to prove it. Also, cows, pigs, and the like are extremely intelligent, socially diverse creatures who are most often killed as babies after being ripped from their mothers. Fishing kills over 5000 cetaceans a year not to fail to mention all the sea life and corals destroyed in this practice. We rely on fecal plumes from whales for much of our oxygen production and way too many species are on the brink of endangerment and extinction due to overfishing which prevents them from eating. Finally, all the soy and corn, all the water and resources used to grow animal feed could feed starving people instead, but most countries grow feed instead for fat western nations to enjoy the muscle and lactations of animals- that of you weren’t funding to murder- would be your friend. So vegans, haha. Trying to feed starving g people, preserve antibiotic efficacy, reduce global climate change, stop the rape and murder of 59 billion terrestrial animals a year. We are sooooo dumb.

Bottlenose dolphins will drown other dolphins for fun. (Course they are in the porpoise family too) The more intelligent an animal the more cruel it can be.

I cannot believe that this cruelty is allowed to continue.😠

Tilikum is a tragic tale of an orca that was kidnapped from its family by humans at a young age to entertain humans.
Then being attacked by other orcas of the pool. He had every right to hate humans for what they did.
But no right to kill them
@@jensensolace4948 He was an animal.

Thank you for the detailed background story.
Tilly didn't ask human beings to kidnap him from his mother and abuse him. So there's that. So the people responsible for those 3 deaths are the kidnappers, the buyers and Sea World.

ORCAS ARE NOT CRUEL PREDATORS ARE THEY MORE CRUEL THAN TIGERS . LIONS .SHARKS .. LEOPARS ETC ??????
THE TOP PREDATOR ON EARTH IS THE MAN
Most people that talk about Orca in this generic manner, even WATOP, tend to generalize them as the "cruel, killing machines".
That's a really cool story!
My God!
That's true I saw it I was the great white shark
That is absolutely amazing
Wow! Is this real!!?
If it wasn’t for the first human who saved an orca, there would probably be a lot of Hollywood films that are basically like “Jaws” but Orca edition
There was a couple orca evil films.
Did you ever see the *Orca* movie? I have not, but it is popular enough to know about.
Free Willy was the best orca film to date

Not ALL movie depictions of orcas portray them as sweet and affectionate toward people. I remember a movie I saw when I was a kid back in the 80s. Yeah since when were you a cruel predator lately pal
So u want a monke to say it ?
At the end of his life he just floated in his tank without moving for hours at a time (in nature zhey wouldn do that longer than a few minutes)
my mans needed help
Some animals are too smart to keep in captivity. Especially ones that huge. I feel the same way about elephants

When you're the smartest thing in the ocean you have nothing but killing to pass the time. It's like living in a video game on easy mode

Literally anything passes time.. how is killing the only option?
Also, just because an octopus doesn't kill like an orca, doesn't mean octopods aren't smarter than orcas. Dolphins, too.
@@staind.raindrop What would you do if you were a fully grown Orca living in the ocean to pass the time?
Things I assume when thinking of a fully grown Orca
-Has already traveled throughout majority if not all of the oceans (Whether it be surface level or not)
-Has already seen tons and tons of creatures that whilst they look cool or have cool tricks, are still not as strong or impressive as them (even if they were this would just make them want to challenge the creature to see who is stronger)
To me, it seems like you have overestimated the amount of things an Orca can do.
Honestly, I think it's rather interesting that Orcas turn hunting into a sport to keep themselves entertained. It shows that humans hunting as a sport (TO BE CLEAR, I DO NOT MEAN HUNTING ANIMALS TO EXTINCTION OR HUNTING ENDANGERED ANIMALS. I MEAN HUNTING ANIMALS THAT ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO BE HUNTED) is justified, considering one of the only other animals that are as smart as us started doing it as well.
@@linkin5088 Dolphins find things that they haven't killed to play with and make games out of... sure it makes sense to make killing as entertaining as possible since it's necessary for survival, but I don't believe that killing just for entertainment alone is justified.
@@staind.raindrop They are dolphins

This guy: “Whale’s aren’t very smart!”
